When I wrote about this film back in February of 2010 it was to announce the casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, then fresh from his Watchmen duties. I hadn’t seen anything other than the general synopsis for the film and drew a comparison with Zodiac, something that this new trailer appears to compound.

Morgan teams up with Sam Worthington in Ami Mann’s film based, as the title card in the trailer has it, on the true story of two detectives ploughing through a long running unsolved case in the titular fields. The trailer sets the scene nicely and though a few guns are brandished you get the impression that this is a slow burning film which will focus on the central dynamic as the story unfolds. Jessica Chastain and Chloe Moretz also star along with, if IMDb is to be believed, Sheryl Lee and if the quick shots in the trailer of bodies wrapped in plastic are anything to go seems entirely appropriate.

The film will open at the Venice Film Festival before its 7th of October release date in the US. No date yet for its UK date, but hopefully this one will be worthy of a theatrical run here.

Having relaunched their brand with Matt Reeves’ Let the Right One In remake, Let Me In, Hammer Films have selected as their sophomore effort The Resident – a home invasion movie starring part-time scream queen Hilary Swank, retired Watchman Jeffrey Dean Morgan and one of those sprawling apartments you only ever see in movies.

Juliet Devereau (Swank), a doctor who is flat-hunting following a messy break-up with her unfaithful ex, Jack (Lee Pace), lands a great deal in the form of a spacious apartment overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. Renting from Max (Morgan), the owner with whom she soon finds herself getting along famously, Juliet is introduced to her sole neighbour, Max’s grandfather, Christopher Lee. Sensing a presence stalking the halls, and tarnishing her reputation at work with a series of uncharacteristic sleep-ins, Juliet grows increasingly suspicious of her landlord, whose friendly demeanor falters upon the reconciliation of her relationship with Jack.

Without the looming shadow of universally praised source material, Hammer Films are finally free to deliver a film relatively bereft of expectation. While Let Me In was serviceable enough, it ultimately disappointed in comparison to the outstanding Swedish original. Entering the cinema without such preconceptions, The Resident plays like a much straighter horror film in keeping with the studio’s trademark hammy tone and thick atmosphere.

Boasting an accomplished cast and well executed cinematography (is there nothing writer-director Antti Jokinen cannot do?), The Resident builds tension and draws the viewer in with practiced aplomb. While no character is particularly likable, they are suitably believable; a nice change from the cookie-cutter teens populating the Platinum Dunes production line. Morgan is wonderfully menacing as the perverted Max, his understated performance eventually giving way to a gripping threat that carries the film through its final act. Two-time Oscar winner Swank is equally effective as the strong-yet-vulnerable Juliet, her reaction to the revelation that she is being stalked genuinely affective. Surprisingly, the only duff note comes from studio staple Lee, while not necessarily a bad performance, his character is frustratingly superfluous.

That said, there is little that stands out about The Resident. It’s jumpy without ever being scary. Atmospheric without being nail-biting. Well acted without being particularly compelling. Max is unlikely to find himself a place in the pantheon of cult horror villainy, while Juliet doesn’t have the balls to be a memorable scream queen. Although serviceable enough, and undoubtedly enjoyable, there is little about The Resident – other than the fact that it is free of MICHAEL BAY’s influence – that makes it stand out from the rest.

Hammer Films is back. And while they have re-established themselves as a competent and equipped horror studio, they have yet to live up to their considerable reputation as genre maestros. If there is more to the film that meets the eye, it is unfortunate that the same can’t be said for the DVD extras; be prepared to make do with a rather unnecessary theatrical trailer.

Starring two-time academy award winning actress Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry, Million Dollar Baby) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Grey’s Anatomy, Watchmen), The Resident is a terrifying psychological thriller, inspired by the fact that every year, countless single women move into apartments for the first time. They do not know who lived in the apartment before them; they do not know their landlords, and they don’t bother to change the locks…

The Resident marks Christopher Lee’s return to the Hammer franchise after a 34 year absence. The film, theatre and television veteran, who was recently honoured with the BAFTA Academy Fellowship award for outstanding contribution to film, has starred in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars: Episode II-Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith. He is best known to millions of horror fans for his famous roles in the film classics Dracula, The Mummy and The Wicker Man.

He appears in Antti Jokinen’s film alongside Hilary Swank and Jeffery Dean Morgan, and there’s a new poster to enjoy today, there was a pretty effective trailer out recently, which you should take a look at.

The ominous synopsis will thrust fear into you,

Every year, several million single women in America move into an apartment. They don’t know who lived in the apartment before them, they don’t know their landlords, and they don’t bother to change the locks. This is the story of one such woman…

The Resident follows Wake Wood and Let Me In as Hammer Films return to the big screen with The Woman in Black perhaps the greatest jewel in their crown, for my money it’s good to have them back.

Eyes down for a scary house,

Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mickey Rourke and Til Schweiger, the film centres around a specialist carrier (Morgan) who upon being hired to deliver a mysterious case to the underworld’s most fearsome crime boss, also finds himself having to contend with corrupt cops and dangerous killers.

Sounds like there are definite shades of The Transporter series here, but any comparisons with those films may hopefully end with the premise, due to The Courier’s strong cast and seasoned scriptwriters, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (the duo behind Wanted and 3:10 to Yuma).

The Resident stars Hillary Swank as a young doctor who finds herself becoming the object of her new landlord’s (played by Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan) obsession when she moves into a Brooklyn loft space.

The poster itself presents that familiar-looking woman in peril imagery which has been seen numerous times before, although it’s nice to see the inclusion of Hammer veteran Christopher Lee’s name under the film’s title. It looks like the studio is consciously paying respect to what has come before in casting the 88 year old – a device which may pay off marketing-wise too.

The film is set for release in the UK on 11 March 2011.

The Courier will be directed by Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) from a script penned by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt.

According to Deadline, Morgan will play a courier who has taken on improbable missions and never missed a drop. He’s hired to deliver a briefcase to a notorious underworld figure that can’t be found. The courier finds himself pursued by corrupt cops, double-crossing feds and rival crime bosses.

The plot seems a tad bland but, with Morgan cast in the lead role, hopefully he’ll be able to inject some life into the narrative during it’s transition to the big-screen.

The Courier will be financed by Arclight Films, with production expected to start in September.

When I sat down to watch Sylvain White’s big screen adaptation of the Andy Diggle and Jock comic book The Losers we were introduced to the film by Diggle and Jock themselves who told those present that they hadn’t seen the finished version and they would be enjoying it for the first time along with us.

I do wonder what they made of White’s film, as I made clear in my review I wasn’t too taken with it, and though it must have been pretty cool to see their characters, dialogue and set pieces the resulting adaptation is far more formulaic than its origins.

So, let’s go back to source here, as those taken with the film will no doubt chose to discover the comic book origin and Vertigo have obliged and released The Losers Volumes 1 & 2. Here’s the blurb,

With the eagerly anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures movie The Losers set to reach theaters in April 2010, DC Comics collects the first twelve issues of THE LOSERS — from the ANTE UP and DOUBLE DOWN TPs — into a single, explosive volume!

This collection introduces The Losers, formerly an elite U.S. Special Forces unit that served as the covert bloody hand of America until they stumbled across a C.I.A. secret they couldn’t ignore. The C.I.A. tried to kill them, but they’re about to learn that it takes more than one try to eliminate The Losers.

What leads us through the cliches of the story are the characters we find caught up in revenge mission, and they make an enjoyable collection on the page, there’s a flurry of banter and the explosive set pieces which are what separate the book from the film – the build up is greater on the page, while the execution is better on screen.

The story kicks off from the very first page, and the dark, kinetic artwork by Jock assists the pacing, explosions abound and wises are cracked – this is another example of where the cool guys walk away from the fireballs without thinking about looking back. The character of Aisha al-Fadhil, played by Zoe Saldana in the film is given a far better backstory in the comics, and the treatment of her character is one of the failings of the film, but in Andy Diggle’s work she is a far more mysterious and forceful character, and acts as a better counterpoint to the testosterone fuelled company of Losers.

The mystery of Max, virtually non-existent in the film, is an ongoing theme of the comic and at journey’s end his identity is not revealed, and there’s a few less cliches on offer here to make it worth your while if you’re a comic book fan.

Chances are that you won’t find any attempt at subversion in such a well worn idea, but the pace and set pieces make it a good read, even if you weren’t totally taken with the film.

The Losers Volumes 1 & 2 are published by Vertigo Books and are available now.

Set in the early 40′s, pre-Pearl Harbor, the film focuses on an American who returns to Shanghai to investigate the murder of his friend. The film is directed by Mikael Håfström, who directed 1408 previously and stars Chow Yun-Fat, John Cusak, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, David Morse, Ken Watanabe and Franka Potente. Wow, that’s a crazy strong cast. From the looks of the trailer, this film has it all. Action, intrigue, romance! I’m actually excited for this one. But unfortunately, IMDB doesn’t show any type of release date for the US or the UK. No worries though, we’ll keep you posted on any updated info.

You can head over to Firstshowing.net for a more in depth look, but be sure to check out the trailer.

The Men on a Mission movie is big business this year with the big screen adaptation of the ultimate 80s property The A-Team rubbing musclebound shoulders with another nostalgia tinged action epic The Expendables, and this film, while it has the luxury of hitting our cinema first, needs to establish an identity of its own in order to offer up something other than playground quips and a succession of explosions.

The comic book roots of this film are evident in the standard character intros (including the time honoured freeze frame/slam/superimposed character name tack) and the bullet ballets with their sudden super slo-mo death scenes, and fans of the comic book will enjoy seeing some of the more stylised set pieces faithfully portrayed on screen. But we’re post Kick-Ass, and more imagination is needed to engage the audience and while the film offered plenty of style it suffers from a critical lack of substance.

Director Sylvain White knows when to adhere closely to the panels of the comic, and some of the scenes could have been storyboarded from the original from writer Andy Diggle and illustrator Jock, but White also allows the panel frames to be pushed a little wider and some of the more outlandish set pieces are given extra scope on screen.

Comparing this to something like 300, where the framing was sometimes a celluloid copy of the artwork, and also Watchmen, whose adherence to the source material was something of a sticking point for a lot of critics, The Losers does feel episodic and formulaic, just as the comic book did, but the same two things save it on the big screen.

The set pieces are fun to watch, and the first scene has a particularly nasty conclusion which I wasn’t expecting, and the various missions to recover/steal some very important plot device play out like Mission Impossible as commanded by Danny Ocean; the banter is frantic and fun, the gadgets look geeky, plenty of lock and load and gunplay ahoy. But it’s hard to engage in a film that seems so determined to impress with its hardware that it leaves the characters strewn across the screen hanging onto their sole trait (distrustful, vengeful, homesick, court jester, etc) like shadows in the light of the explosions they cause.

Never at any point of the film do we think our band of Losers will fail, and it becomes all about sitting back and enduring/enjoying the ride. Note that this does not mean ‘turning your brain off’ (seriously – you’d be dead), but more seeing the film for what it is: a series of explosions and fights with a lacing of plot to keep the momentum on some sort of track. It does what it sets out to do very well, and it’s a flashy spectacle which will play very well to those who can’t wait for The A-Team to come rolling around. I enjoyed the film while hating some parts of it intensely, and on further thought concluded that I was thinking about it all too much. It’s a ride, and you know what you’re in for within the first few minutes.

What is likely to endear you to the film far more than the plot is the cast. Virtually everyone in the film is seemingly perfect for their respective roles, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba making great hay with their antagonistic relationship and Elba in particular really yanking his dialogue from the realms of cliche to be an effective, ambiguous presence. Zoe Saldana gets to look good and fire bazookas, sadly not much more than that, while Captain America himself Chris Evans plays a very familiar character in the role of jokey Jensen. I had a huge problem with White’s camera zooming in on Saldana mid-fight crawling away from her assailant on all fours – seriously, that’s Michael Bay tacky, and may prove problematic for some as it is indicative of a brief, very lazy misogyny.

Standouts for me though are Columbus Short as Pooch (with his miraculous Wolverine like powers of recovery – you’ll see what I mean), and having only seen Short in the Aaron Sorkin show Studio 60 it was great to see him here, and Oscar Jaenada as the taciturn sniper Cougar are great fun. To be clear there’s nothing much here in terms of character development, and certainly nothing to surprise, but everyone plays their part perfectly and The Losers needs them to elevate it above the ordinary.

The film has great style and a relentless pace which threatens to leave the casual viewer behind, conversely there’s not a huge amount to pay attention to in the way of plot deviations and the twists, when they come, are no surprise and have little impact on the outcome of the film at journey’s end. At one point the team implodes and characters are cut loose or leave, only to reappear like Han Solo at the end of Star Wars (only with a bazooka the size of a vaulting pole) to help out at just the right moment. At least the script is aware enough to have lines such as “I’m the black MacGuyver!” in it, and the film does well in keeping just one step removed from the cliches of its influences.

The Losers follows Kick-Ass into the cinemas by a matter of weeks, and is certainly nowhere near as good, subversive or as much fun. Where it deviates is clear though, and it is all a matter of consequence. In Kick-Ass the violence hurts, and bringing superhero sensibilites into the real world has a logical, visceral consequence. In The Losers though it is one outrageous set piece after another enacted in a strange violent bubble where city streets play mute witness to ridiculous firestorms of gunfire and bomb blasts; it is a self aware portfolio of violent espionage and vengeance whose initial serious and horrific incident is thrown away in favour of casual gunplay and lighthearted death dealing.

(via Collider.com) have released a brand new batch of photos and a new video (via MySpace) for their new movie, The Loser which is directed by Sylvain White and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Sargent Clay, Idris Elba as Roque, Chris Evans as Jensen, Columbus Short as Pooch, Zoe Saldana as Aisha, and Oscar Jaenada as Cougar.

It’s set for release 23rd April in the US (no UK date as yet that I know of) and from what we’ve seen, looks great! Scroll down for the new video and the new images after the synopsis.

An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, “The Losers” centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team—Clay (Morgan), Jensen (Evans), Roque (Elba), Pooch (Short) and Cougar (Jaenada)—find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max (Patric). Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they’re joined by the mysterious Aisha (Saldana), a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.”

The Losers is a adaptation of the Vertigo comic of the same name and as this new poster suggest, the film focuses on a group of misfits on a mission. It’ll probably be pretty good competition against The A Team but it probably won’t be quite as bad-ass as the Stallone directed The Expendables. You can watch the trailer for The Losers here and below is the brand new quad poster courtesy of Live for Films. In case you need a reminder the plot is as follows

Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

Today we’ve learned from Bloody Disgusting that Morgan will team up with another breakout star in recent years, Sam Worthington, in the Michael Mann produced true story, Texas Killing Fields, or as it may be known, The Fields.

Telling the story of a pair of detectives from different parts of America, bought together, to try and uncover the cause of two decades worth of homicides in the refinery wastelands of Texas.

Mann’s daughter Ami Canaan Mann will direct this Don Ferrarone script with shooting to start this April – while it sounds like it has a touch of the Zodiacs to me, Morgan and Worthington have me interested.

First up in the news that Colin Firth is to join Matthew Macfadyen and Jim Sturgess in Michael Winterbottom’s film The Promised Land, a political thriller set in Palestine at the end of the Second World War. Fans of Firth or Macfayden may enjoy the notion of the two Mr. Darcys joining forces on screen and following his amazing turn in Tom Ford’s A Single Man Firth will be seen in The King’s Speech, and his reunion with director Winterbottom (after 2008′s Genova) should maintain Firth’s ascending star.

Watchmen’s Comedian and forthcoming Loser Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to take the lead Michael Barrett’s psychological thriller The Unblinking Eye, Morgan will play a reclusive detective tracked down by a journalist years after he was almost killed by a serial killer. There’s dark secrets to unveil and pasts to confront and while this isn’t an obvious move from Solomon Kane writer/director Barrett has a great lead in Morgan.

THR has the news here.

Certainly, as The L.A. Times (via MovieWeb) point out the image is an almost identical replica of the comic book image, also included below. While similar in theme to the A-Team, this series melds government conspiracy and a stylised violence which is sure to play well on the big screen. White spoke to the Times about how he intended the film to play,

When I first read the screenplay, what struck me, the initial spark, was the opportunity for a really interesting mix of tones. It struck me almost as a comedy disguised in an action film. I felt recently there had been a lot of action movies that embrace grittiness and realness but also fall into a very straight and dark tone, generally. I thought here there was a really interesting balance drawn from the 2004 and 2005 [comics] reinventions of ‘The Losers’ that had hard, gritty action with a fun, light tone.

MSN have released a new trailer for the film version which is directed by Sylvain White and stars Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Idris Elba and Columbus Short.

The Losers is based on the DC-Vertigo comic by Andy Diggle.Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. I’t ram packed full of action and looks pretty good.

Plot: An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, “The Losers” centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.
