The Super Bowl is not just about splendid TV spots for upcoming cinema releases, there is a game to be played too. Many of us on this side of the North Atlantic rather look down our noses at American Football. Some dismiss it as rugby for softies (the “too much padding” argument), others as too stop-start (the “not as fluid as proper football” argument), others as too convoluted (the “I don’t really understand what’s happening here” argument).

For what my opinion is worth (please don’t tell me how little that is, I really am quite delicate) I think American Football is hugely entertaining and easily comprehensible, but more than that, the intricate choreography of its set-piece plays is so much better suited to cinema than either rugby or normal football.

Disagree? Tell me of a convincing and realistic portrayal of football in cinema? Mean Machine? Escape to Victory? You see?

Now of course that doesn’t make American Football a better or more compelling sport, but this is a film blog and so what it does make it is a better theme for a Six Of The Best article, in this case, Six of the Best cinematic portrayals of American Football. The film doesn’t need to be wholly or exclusively about Gridiron, but it must be a legitimate theme rather than a mere background detail. The Waterboy would be eligible, but sadly doesn’t make the list because it is deeply and enduringly terrible.

The excellent and exciting American Football-themed opening to Welcome to the Jungle (or “The Rundown” as it is otherwise known) is probably too peripheral a reference to qualify, more’s the pity. So what’s in? Here’s my list, please feel free to lambast me in the comments section for any glaring omissions, but be gentle. Remember, I’m delicate.

1. Jerry Maguire

Although Cameron Crowe’s 1996 film is not essentially about sport, but rather about a man trying to find his way to being the man he should and wants to be, American Football is threaded through. Very little on-field action is presented to us, save for the nail-biting finale when we wonder whether Rod Tidwell (a never-better Cuba Gooding Jr) will be able to pick himself up from the crunching end zone tackle that leaves him flat on his back, but the world of the NFL is there all the way through, from players getting caught in compromising situations, to the quest for a life-changing multi-year contract, to a splendid cameo from the Cowboys Troy Aikman (“I really liked your memo”).

Ultimately, Jerry Maguire is a great film because of its delicious script, note-perfect performances and deftly handled direction, not because it revolves around the world of the NFL, but revolve it does, commenting on the unpleasant side-effects of exclusive merchandising deals and the impact on the wives and children of professional athletes who continue to put their bodies in danger because they have such a small window within which to make their living. Although these matters are not the principal concern of the film (the condition of Jerry’s heart is), it is a fascinating insight to some of the collateral damage occasioned by American Football.

Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained is almost definitely going to be one of the best films of 2012. That’s pretty much a given. The casting has been so good so far, and currently includes Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington, Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony LaPaglia, and to top it all off, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Essentially, there are already about a million reasons why we should be excited about this. Actor Garret Dillahunt, via Collider, said that he visited the set of Tarantino’s next film, and was nice enough to post a few photos of the set too. And they look pretty awesome.

Tarantino’s “Southern,” his take on the Spaghetti Western set in the South, is centred on Foxx in the role of Django,

“a slave who’s liberated by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter and taught the tricks of the trade by his mentor. Django’s major goal in life is to recover his wife, and to do it he needs to get past the villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who runs Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo”-style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare, and that is where Django’s wife Broomhilda is an abused slave.”

Apparently the film is shooting on the same set as HBO’s now-cancelled Deadwood, and so fans of the show might well recognise these sets. As Dillahunt says in one of his tweets, “It’ll always be #Deadwood to me.”

The film will open in the US on Christmas Day and then come to cinemas in the UK on Boxing Day this year, putting it in prime position to go to the Oscars this time next year. DiCaprio will be competing against himself, in a sense, at the box office for the final week of December, with Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby also set for a Christmas Day release in the States. All signs point to a fantastic end to the year at the cinema. I can’t wait. As always with these first images, click to enlarge.

And in case you missed it, with awards season currently in full swing, you can catch up on Tarantino’s Top Films of 2011 that we reported last month and see how they compare to your own favourites from last year.

Home Video have given us three three fantastic featurettes from the Blu-ray that really showcase what you can expect from the movie. Horrible Bosses is directed by Seth Gordon and has an amazing cast which includes Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Julie Bowen and Jamie Foxx. If you missed Dave’s review of the BD, you can check it out here.

For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers…permanently. There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them. Produced by Jay Stern.

The casting for Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated next feature film, Django Unchained, continues. Just last week, we got the ridiculously brilliant news that none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join the film, as long as he can fit it into his already busy schedule.

Word now comes via Deadline that Tarantino has found his female lead in Kerry Washington. Washington has been rumoured to be involved with the project for some time now, and Tarantino had had his eye on her from the beginning. He then flirted with the possibility of instead opening the role up to a talented newcomer, but it seems now that he has gone back to his initial gut feelings, with Washington currently in negotiations.

The film’s cast currently also includes Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Don Johnson, and I’m very much hoping we can officially add Joseph Gordon-Levitt to that list soon too. Washington will be playing the role of Broomhilda, the wife of Foxx’s titular Django. Foxx’s Django will be at the centre of the film,

I must admit, I’m not especially familiar with Washington’s work to date, even though it includes some very high-profile films like The Last King of Scotland and Ray; it just so happens that I’m yet to see them. But if Tarantino likes her – and has liked her right from the start – then you know that she’s got to be right for the role. Django Unchained will be hitting cinemas on Christmas Day next year, which is going to pretty much make it the best Christmas ever. Thank you in advance, Mr. Claus.

After many years of mutual admiration their cosy life is disrupted when Brazilian bird expert Tulio arrives and persuades Linda to take Blu to Brazil to meet Jewel (Anne Hathaway) as he believes them to be the last female and male blue macaws on earth. As you might expect it doesn’t go to plan and the rest of the film follows the adventures of Blu and Jewel as they battle smugglers, an evil cannibal parrot called Nigel and the twists and turns of both circumstance and adventure in equal measure.

If you haven’t seen the film I can’t do better than to point you to our original review here by Vicki which goes into greater detail about the plot and throws in the odd spoiler or two, and means that I can spare you my attempts to reinvent the wheel.

I missed the film in the cinema when it came out, though my family saw it and loved it, so they were happy to get the chance to see it again which means that I’d say that it does have repeat viewing value unlike some I could mention. In a crowded market of computerised animal animations it’s bound to draw comparisons with Madagascar but it really does create its own space, reminding me in parts of Disney classics, such as 101 Dalmatians with its bumbling baddies, plus more recent films such as Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs for its geeky heroes. Nigel the evil parrot is definitely a star turn as the evil bird cooperating with the poachers and a source of perfectly voiced malevolence.

To whet your appetite we’ve been given an exclusive clip for you to enjoy

Now the chances are that you’ll be getting the DVD because you saw the film when it originally came out though if you missed it the first time around like me then I’d really recommend it.

As is customary with these things the DVD does have a selection of extras

Deleted scene – Fruit Stand

Taio Cruz- Telling The World music video….

Bring The Party – UK families videoed dancing with the Rio birds

The final points to make are that you get the code for a free copy of the Angry Birds Rio game with it and that it also includes a digital copy to enjoy on your iPhone, iPad or tablet.

Rio is available on DVD and Blu-ray in shops now or available to rent on LOVEFiLM

The casting for Quentin Tarantino’s seventh feature film, Django Unchained, has been getting pretty damn excellent in recent months, with the director lining up an incredibly talented group of actors to join him on his next venture.

And it seems the brilliant casting isn’t over yet, with Variety now reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join the project, due out on Christmas Day next year.

Gordon-Levitt is currently hard at work filming Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated return to Gotham City, The Dark Knight Rises. He also has Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln on his schedule, so his involvement on Django Unchained isn’t concrete yet, and is dependent on whether it’s possible to fit everything in with each other. He is said to be intending to join the project though, which is certainly a good sign.

It would see him re-teaming with Leonardo DiCaprio after working with him on last year’s incredibly popular Inception, alongside the likes of Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Don Johnson.

Foxx is leading the film as the titular Django,

“a slave who’s liberated by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter and taught the tricks of the trade by his mentor. Django’s major goal in life is to recover his wife, and to do it he needs to get past the villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who runs Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo”-style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare, and that is where Django’s wife Broomhilda is an abused slave.”

Tarantino is planning on starting production in New Orleans in January, and with a little bit of luck, Gordon-Levitt will be able to work the film into his schedule around then. His last film, Inglourious Basterds, took the Best Supporting Actor for Christoph Waltz at last year’s Academy Awards, along with another seven nominations, and Django Unchained’s scheduled 25th December release date next year puts it perfectly in line for the 2013 Academy Awards.

The cast is already looking awesome, and the addition of Gordon-Levitt would only serve to further bolster that awesomeness. More news as we get it.

Don Johnson, he of Miami Vice fame and Nash Bridges, erm, something, will apparently step in front of the camera as a villainous plantation owner for Tarantino’s western.

We already know that Jamie Foxx, Leo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Kurt Russell are in. Don Johnson brings a different dimension here, especially as a villain, though he has that twinkle in his eye that could make this work out rather nicely. Casting is still ongoing, though we would expect pre-production to give way to principal photography before too long.

The casting so far for Quentin Tarantino’s seventh feature film, Django Unchained, has been pretty excellent so far, with Jamie Foxx taking the titular role and Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Costner, and Christoph Waltz also cast.

Until now, Samuel L. Jackson (the L. stands for Awesome) has only been rumoured to be a part of the film too, but Collider report he has officially signed on to the project, which is brilliant news.

The film will see Jackson returning to collaborate with Tarantino for the fifth time, after first working with him on Pulp Fiction, which earned Jackson an Oscar nomination, and working with him since on Jackie Brown, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, and Inglourious Basterds (as the narrator). Django Unchained focuses on Django (Foxx),

Jackson and Tarantino are both ridiculously awesome at what they do. They know how to make an utterly fantastic film, the likes of which are essentially incomparable to others in the same field, and their pairing up in the past has led to four exceptional films. So it can only be good news that Jackson’s returning for Django Unchained. In the film, he’ll be playing Stephen,

“a house slave and the right-hand man of a sadistic slavemaster.”

That slavemaster will be played by DiCaprio, who I’m really looking forward to seeing as the villain in this. Filming will be getting underway in November, but Jackson won’t be joining the cast and crew in New Orleans to film his parts until January due to scheduling commitments. It could well be that his role won’t be an especially significant one, but however small or large his part is, seeing Jackson working with Tarantino again is always nothing but fantastic news.

The film is due out in America on Christmas Day next year, and hopefully it will get its UK release then too. The cinemas will probably be closed on the actual day, but would it make me a bad person if I said I want them to be open? Spending Christmas with Tarantino doesn’t sound like a bad plan at all to me.

There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis star as the three hapless workers, with Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and two-time Oscar® winner Kevin Spacey, as their unbearable bosses. Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx stars as the plotters’ unlikely mentor, whose street cred is priced on a sliding scale.

To celebrate the release of HORRIBLE BOSSES in cinemas on Friday 22 July, HeyUGuys have some HORRIBLE BOSSES ‘office packs’ up for grabs, including a desktop drink dispenser, stationary set, coaster and Post-it pen. To be in with a chance of winning, just answer the below question;

HORRIBLE BOSSES stars this actress, who can be seen most recently on the silver screen in JUST GO WITH IT opposite Adam Sandler and is best known for her work in television as Rachel Green on the hit ensemble comedy FRIENDS. Name the actress in the form below,

The director of The King of Kong, who was recently connected with a War Games remake, has a fantastic cast working with him for this tale of blood on the carpet and six new clips from the film have surfaced online.

The rumours about who’s going to lead Quentin Tarantino’s next project, Django Unchained, have been going around for a few months now, and Deadline are reporting that the role has now all but been finalised with Jamie Foxx set to play Django.

Both Will Smith and Idris Elba had been rumoured to be circling the lead in Tarantino’s upcoming Spaghetti Western-esque film, but negotiations are now going to be getting underway to have Foxx fill the role in a film everyone should be looking forward to.

Tarantino has long since carved a niche for himself in the market, which he took to another level with the release of Inglourious Basterds in 2009, a film that had a rapturous reception, earned Christoph Waltz an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and took $320m. at the box office from a $70m. budget.

When he gets to work on a new project, fans and press alike get excited about it, and Django Unchained is no exception, garnering a lot of attention in the past few months. Tarantino is a director who seems to love working with the same actors and actresses across his films, and for that too, his next project is set to do the same, with Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson both set to star in Django Unchained.

Working with Tarantino for the first time will be Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie, the lead antagonist in the film, a plantation and club owner, who allows the female slaves to be exploited for sex and pits the men to fight each other to the death. Whilst DiCaprio’s casting has been talked about as an unexpected choice, he has the potential to excel in the role. It’s something completely different to what we’re used to seeing him in, and I think we’re going to love to hate him in the film.

Like DiCaprio, Foxx will be working here with Tarantino for the first time. As much as I would have loved to see Will Smith take the lead on this film, Foxx is definitely an excellent choice too, and he’s shown in recent years that he’s capable of acting beyond what we might expect of most comedians, earning his Academy Award in the 2004 biopic, Ray. In the same year, he was also nominated for a Best Supporting Oscar for his role in Collateral opposite Tom Cruise; it’s not at all often we see an actor on both the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations lists at the Oscars, but Foxx managed it.

In Django Unchained, he’ll be playing Django,

“a slave who’s liberated by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter and taught the tricks of the trade by his mentor. Django’s major goal in life is to recover his wife, and to do it he needs to get past the villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who runs Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo”-style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare, and that is where Django’s wife Broomhilda is an abused slave.”

Tarantino finished work on the script back in April, and production is now set to begin in November. Whilst it’s still very early to talk about possible awards for Tarantino’s next film, I think a lot of people would agree there’s a fair chance that it will be highly tipped for the Oscars when it’s released, and Foxx could well be earning at least another Best Actor nomination for the lead.

Warner Bros. have released a brand new trailer and a new clip for their new comedy, Horrible Bosses. The more I see of it, the more I want to see it in its finished form!

Horrible Bosses is directed by Seth Gordon and stars Kevin Spacey , Colin Farrell , Jason Bateman , Charlie Day , Jennifer Aniston , Jason Sudeikis, Jamie Foxx , Julie Bowen , Donal Sutherland and John Francis Daley.

Synopsis: For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust.

Horrible Bosses will be released in the UK on July 22nd.

The film is released over here on the 22nd July, so no doubt we’ll see a few more of these in the coming weeks. Here’s hoping Farrell is next in line.

We were invited as part of the Jacques d’Azur short film where Stella have created a fictional character to become the ‘King of Cannes’. Jacques is famous for being the man that all woman want to be with and who all men want to be. Throughout the process which has now been going on for a few months, they have picked a member of the public through an audition process to become Jacques and the movie which has now been filmed will be premiering at Cannes this coming weekend.

To coincide with the project, Stella constructed Jacques d’Azur’s house on the beach opposite the Carlton Hotel which was the base for our stay in the beautiful French Riviera. I had no idea what to expect when we arrived at the resort. I’d seen photos obviously of the famous Palais red carpet steps and the Carlton Hotel which was always the centrepiece for advertising but seeing it in person was a whole different matter. Arriving at the hotel surrounded by top of the range Mercede, Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Maybach, Lamborghini etc etc etc was rather surreal but something that we’d soon get used to as pretty much every car which drove past was on of the above apart from the official Renault’s employed for the event which were some new type of electric model.

Pretty much as soon as we arrived, we were given a Stella (of course!) and a rather fancy buffet lunch and it wasnt long before we noticed that our table was overlooking another occupied by Rob Lowe. This would be the beginning of our celebrity spotting for the next few days. It wasn’t long before we had to get ready to head off to our first premiere which was French movie, Polisse (in competition) which deals with the rather difficult subject looking at the French Child Protection Unit. Craig is currently writing his review as I type so you’ll be able to check that out in due course.

Before heading off to the premiere, we were invited back down to Jacques house on the beach dressed in our finest before heading off and also to be told that a certain a-lister would be coming down to get a perfectly poured Stella! That a-lister has the name Robert De Niro! We were told not to take any photos of the legendary actor but I completely flouted that rule and took this rather rubbish photo from 10 feet away but at least it proves I have been in the same room as the man! What a legend!

Unfortunately we were a little too late to walk the red carpet before the premiere but going into the Palais was spectacular. The cinema is simply amazing with state of the art sound and the screen is a monster. Looking up the stats, it only holds 820 people but I think that’s because the seats in there are pretty much the biggest and most comfortable I’ve ever sat in at a cinema! Seats are always very important to me! Gotta be comfy! That evening, we then went back to Chez Jacques for the the Little White Lies party where loads of UK people were hanging out and it was great to meet new people and get to know some of those that I’ve met before even better. It’s all about the networking!

The following day I think the main topic of the day was food. I don’t think an hour went past where we didn’t get to eat some spectacular meal! I love the branded puddings! Following an amazing breakfast, Craig and I went along to our second screening for an Israeli movie called, Hearat Shulayim which is also in competition to win the Palme d’Or. It tells the story of an Israeli scholar who has spent 30 years studying the Talmud who’s life isn’t going quite to plan while his son who is in the same line of work is doing rather better and the rivalry between them. Again, Craig will be providing a review of this one for your viewing pleasure. I found it rather intriguing and did enjoy it although found it a little slow in places. He’ll go into far more depth than that (hopefully!).

The highlight of the weekend however probably has to fall to the Saturday night when we attended the Kanye West private party hosted by Red Granite Pictures on the Stella beach location. Along with the members of our party, those in attendance included Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Hamm, Bradley Cooper, Fisher Stevens and Rosario Dawson. You may have already read my post on the evening but if not, you can find out much more about it here along with watching the video of the moment when Jamie Foxx jumped on stage to perform Gold Digger with Kanye West! It was rather awesome and is an evening I will never forget!

I always say on these press trips that although the experience is wonderful, the best part for me is meeting new people who love what they do as much as I do. I was really only there for one full day but in that time I met so many amazing people. I just thought I’d give them a big-up here so that you can get following them on twitter if you’re not already. Lu (Whos Jack Magazine), Laura (Whos Jack Magazine) Michael (Asylum) Ann, Ed (freelance photographer), Ed (MSN Movies), Lucy (MSN Celeb), Sarah (MovieFone). They’re all top chaps so make sure you check out their publications and follow them on twitter. You can see the entire motley crew in this photo here.

Our trip to Cannes was fantastic but far too short and we’re already planning next year so that we can be there for the entire two week period as being back in the UK and watching all the tweets from Cannes is far too difficult! Thanks to much to Stella Artois for sending us over and keep your eyes peeled on HeyUGuys for more from Jaques d’Azur over the next few days and when the movie premieres at the festival on Saturday.

Being in Cannes at all is a privilege and I can’t thank Stella Artois (and Chez Jacques!) enough for sending us over but this evening’s party, to promote Red Granite Picture (who have recently been reported to have attached Leonardo DiCaprio to Wolf) was simply fantastic!

We heard that Kayne West would be performing at the Carlton Hotel performance tent down on the beach but what I didn’t realise was the talent that would turn up to see the gig. As we arrived, we were greeted by multitudes of women lining the red capret making us feel rather intimated! Fans galore were lining the barriers doing their best to get into this event but this was the hottest ticket in town and only 250 people were allowed in.

We were there for around half an hour when the first actress turned up, in the form of Elaine Hendrix. Rumours then circulated the venue that Jamie Foxx would be turning up along with Leonardo DiCaprio. We brushed off the news as rumours until 10 minutes later, both of the Hollywood A-Listers entered the building! Rather amusingly Craig asked the question “Is Jamie Foxx here” literally as Foxx was brushing past his shoulder, to which I replied, “yes, he’s touching you now!”

We were treated to a warm up performance from Pharrell Williams before the man himself, Kanye West took to the stage but not before some security guards were asking us if we’d seen Kanye anywhere?! I guess they found him in the end as it wasn’t too long before the man famous for highly memorable live performances took to the stage.

Watching the gig was amazing in itself. Kanye has some PR issues in his personal life but as a live performer, the guy was incredible. I was hoping that he’d perform my favourite song, Gold Digger and it wasn’t too long before the choooon turned up. What I didn’t expect however was the song to be stopped half way through and for Jamie Foxx to join Kanye for an impromptu duet. I’ve embedded the video of the performance below which might literally blow your mind!!

IFRAME Embed for Youtube

The night got even more surreal when I saw Leonardo DiCaprio standing on a sofa so that he could get a better vantage point to see Kanye’s performance, and then further still as I noticed Rosario Dawson standing right in front of me having the time of her life at what could be one of the best gigs that we’ll ever go to! On the way out, I managed to get a photo with the talented actress – not too sure her security man was too impressed though!

On the way out, Craig got to meet Fisher Stevens rounding off an absolutely amazing night! We’ve just got home to find out that Eric Schmidt (the former CEO of Google) was also at the gig along with the who’s who at Cannes and it was a privilege for us to be there.

Bring on Cannes 2012. If Kanye is performing again, I want to be there!
