J. J. Abrams attended the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour yesterday to talk about his latest television series, Alcatraz and spoke about his latest film, Star Trek 2, going into production on Thursday.

We were also offered details about the sequel to his 2009 film, for which Abrams discussed his recent casting choice of Benedict Cumberbatch, his decision to convert the film into 3D after filming, and how long he expects the production of the film to run for.

Casting Benedict Cumberbatch:

It was reported earlier this month that Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast as the film’s villain after the possibility of casting Benicio Del Toro fell through. “I was just happy that anyone was interested,” said Abrams, but, “We haven’t made any changes because of casting.”

Whilst Abrams did not confirm Cumberbatch as the villain of the film, he went on to say that, “He’s a genius. Honestly, he’s just an incredible actor. If you’ve seen his work in Sherlock, he’s just got incredible skills. He’s an amazing stage actor. He did amazing work (on stage) in Frankenstein. He’s brilliant. You try to cast people who are great. We got lucky.”

He added: “We just were looking for someone with the most awesome name in history. That was the casting call. We asked for someone with the most awesome name in history, ever, and Benedict Cumberbatch showed up, so we were like, ‘You’re cast!’”

Converting The Film Into 3D:

As for the filming, it was reported in December that Abrams planned to convert the film into 3D after filming. He commented that, “We’re shooting on film, and the reason for that is I wanted to shoot with anamorphic, and you can’t shoot 3D in anamorphic.” He continued: “It will be converted, for those who want to see it in 3D. But, I wanted to match the look of the first one and shoot it anamorphically.”

3D has, however, died down somewhat, but Abrams commented that, “I did not fight for the 3D. It was something that the studio wanted to do, and I didn’t want to do it. And then, when I saw the first movie converted in sections, I thought that it actually looked really cool.”

Production:

The shoot for Star Trek 2 will last for 4 months, just about as long as the first one, but the film will not include any of the original Star Trek TV series cast. “It was just what the story of the movie required,” said Abrams, “With everything, you respond to what you’re trying to do and what story you’re trying to tell.”

“I think the job of the first movie was just to establish it. I don’t want to give anything away, but I would say that the burden we had in the first movie was just existing at all. With this movie, instead of having to stand on the shoulders of the original series, we built a little bit of a platform for us, with the last movie, to tell this story.”

In relation to balancing the filming with his new series, the mysterious Alcatraz, Abrams said commented that, “The truth is that this show, I didn’t create, I’m a producer on it.”

He continued: “Luckily, with the people with whom I work, what I’ve been trying to do is help, whether it’s reading the scripts, giving notes, giving suggestions on cuts, doing the theme music, and playing with the show and getting it up and running.”

“Sometimes as a producer, you’re creating and writing it, or sometimes you’re writing and directing it, or other times you’re there from the very beginning. This was one where my job was to try to help facilitate it and get it going, and give notes that they could take or leave. It really is a show that they [Jennifer Johnson and Dan Pyne] are doing a beautiful job running and I’m lucky to be working with them.”

Star Trek 2 is set to be released on 17th May 2013 in the US, and will hopefully be available in the UK sometime around then too.

And when you’ve had a look at them all, we have a poll on the last page for you to vote:

Benedict as a Klingon

According to the Klingon name generator, if Benedict Cumberbatch were a Klingon, his name would be: Kutaj of the house of Torath! Do we think Abrams frequents this site?! Time will tell!

We’ve seen The Klingons as villains in numerous episodes and movies but more recently they have joined the Federation to become the good-guys but this of course was in the 24th (I think?!) century and Abrams’ Star Trek is before well before that.

Name: Kutaj of the house of Torath

Klingons last seen in: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) which is only good if you’ve seen it in the original Klingon. Christopher Plummer and David Warner followed other actors who have donned the pointy foreheads such as Christopher Lloyd.

Abrams’ Star Trek 2" href="http://www.heyuguys.co.uk/2012/01/04/british-actor-noel-clarke-cast-in-j-j-abrams-star-trek-2/">Noel Clarke was set to join J.J. Abrams in his sequel to 2009 movie, Star Trek (currently named Star Trek 2) and this morning, Deadline have put up the news that Benedict Cumberbatch who seems to be in everything at the moment is all set to join him too! Cumberbatch seems to be picking up brilliant roles all over the place with him recently working with a stellar cast in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, back on our screens over Christmas in BBC TV series Sherlock and also heading out to New Zealand to work with Peter Jackson voicing the ‘Necromancer’ in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again. Big congrats to Benedict!

This now means we have yet another Brit joining the cast bringing the total to 5 including Noel Clarke, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and now Cumberbatch – looks like the Brits are taking over!

News is that he’ll be playing a ‘lead villain’ in the movie but as yet we don’t know who it’ll be or what race but obviously we’ll update you as and when we get it.

Here’s some rather fabulous news for British Actor / Director Noel Clarke as Variety have just announced the news that the BAFTA winner has been cast in J.J. Abrams’ sequel to the 2009 movie Star Trek. Clarke has previously written and starred in Kidulthood and Adulthood and more recently starred in Screwed and we met him on set more recently for upcoming British movie, The Knot which you’ll hear about in the coming months.

The movie is set for release Summer 2013 and as yet we know very little about it as Abrams regulars Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci write the script. We know that Abrams will direct and Noel joins fellow Brits, Alice Eve and Simon Pegg in the movie.

This is all Variety give away:

While the details of Clarke’s role are being kept under wraps, he will play a family man with a wife and young daughter.

Big congrats Noel! More as we get it!

Abrams 2009 movie, Star Trek. I say May 17th, that is according to Deadline and no doubt that date with be for the North American market but since it’s 11pm now in the UK, my guess is that most people reading HeyUGuys are in the US so this one is for you!! My hope however is that the UK will get it around the same time, even though it does seem a very long way away.

Deadline report that Paramount have snapped up the date which will fall on pre-Memorial Weekend after the news that Sony have moved Roland Emmerich’s Singularity back to November 2013.

For now, that’s all folks but great to see Star Trek 2 movie forward and oh, by the way, it’s also going to be in 3D! Thoughts on that? I am quite looking forward to seeing The Enterprise flying into my face!

The latest suggestion? None other than Benicio Del Toro.

Del Toro’s association is more than just rumour, however; the actor has already met with Abrams to discuss the role, and sources suggest that an announcement regarding him being cast is imminent.

While Del Toro certainly make an interesting choice as the latest adversary to go up against Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk and the other members of the Enterprise crew, exactly what character he might be playing remains a total mystery. Star Trek fans have been debating long and hard since the release of the last movie as to whether the sequel should utilize a newly created character (some rumours have suggested the Klingons may play a major part in the new film) or a ‘new timeline’ take on a previously established villain – most notably Khan Noonien Singh, who was memorably played by Ricardo Montalban in both the original series episode ‘Space Seed’ and the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Abrams is notoriously secretive when it comes to divulging details of his projects before they’re released, so while shooting begins on Star Trek XII (or II, depending on your point of view) early in 2012, it may be some time before we find out exactly who or what the crew of the Starship Enterprise will be firing their phasers at this time around.

Given how many films the man’s been in over a 20 year long career, the hardest part of interviewing him is staying on the subject at hand and resisting the temptation to ask about Stardust, or Ironclad or Spice World.

Fortunately X-Men First Class, and Flemyng’s relationship with the film’s director Matthew Vaughn, are particularly interesting subjects. That said, we did find the time to ask whether we would be seeing Azazel again in an X-Sequel, and about his desire to produce films as well as act.

And if this doesn’t sate your desire for behind the scenes gossip on X-Men: First Class, check out Children of the Atom, the remarkably frank and forthright documentary on the Blu-Ray. It’s absolutely fascinating.

In a year awash with superhero movies a new X-Men film was in danger of being overlooked, or even avoided altogether given the toxic slap of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Origins Wolverine and yet here we are with me telling you that X-Men: First Class is tremendous fun and edges up to X2 as one of the best of the series. How did Matthew Vaughn bring this series back from the edge?

Taking us back in time is a smart move and the origins of this film lie in the film’s opening scene which is a continuation of the previously glimsped moment when the young Erik Lensherr enters a Nazi concentration camp. At one point the next X-Men film was to be Magneto’s story and in First Class there is a strong case to be made for a Fassbender led film as he is easily the most interesting character here, but the crucial expansion of the story to include the other original X-Men gives the film a reason to be. We need to see the friendship develop between Xavier and Lensherr before watching it fall apart and the scenes between McAvoy and Fassbender are perfectly pitched and despite the shenanigans in Cuba and the Hellfire Club it is this relationship which fuels the film.

Watching it again on Blu-ray (which looks beautiful by the way, crisp and colourful) the film’s pacing really stands out, as do the dynamics of the characters which are nicely complex and completely true. In contrast Singer’s Superman didn’t work its characters against each other, they all existed in the same space but didn’t spark when they met. Here there is an excellent villain in Kevin Bacon’s Sebastian Shaw, and crucially he is the catalyst for the change in fortune for the X-Men. It’s an exciting ride with a stunning visual identity, a keen wit and a genuinely unfamiliar feel to it, and this is a key strength.

It’s hard to imagine a better main cast for the young X-Men and a strength of Goldman as a writer and Vaughn as a director is the charm and intensity of McAvoy and Fassbender respectively. To embody an earlier version of a character so well known, and so expertly played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, is no easy trick but the glint in Charles Xavier’s eye and the latent vulnerability of Erik Lensherr is something new and drives the film early on. That the characters evolve over the course of the film, Xavier to learn the responsibility of his power and position and Lensherr to embrace his mutant side wholly, and that this evolution happens so clearly and with the full force of the plot behind it is testament to the success of the film and the care which has gone into it.

Best of all it achieves the same, rare feat as JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot in that the new actors easily replace those we’ve come to know in the roles and as soon as the end scene rolls we want to see more. If the next film follows the trajectory of quality of the Singer Trilogy then the next X-Men will be anything other than Second Class.

Film:****~ (4/5)

Special Features:

Cerebro – The Ultimate Mutant Database replicates what happens when Charles locates mutants through Cerebro and allows you to learn more about various mutants, connect them to key events, decipher connections between them and much more (additional mutants can be unlocked through BD Live).

This is an odd extra but it does a good job of drawing the five films together with an animated ‘Cerebro’ menu taking us through the cast of mutants and then a short montage of their finest moments plays before a fact sheet is pulled up. You could spend a while going through each of the characters but I doubt many people will. It’s not a bad attempt at giving the Blu-ray buying public something a little extra but it’s a cumbersome way to see a video clip and a short bio.

Children of the Atom–Multi-part documentary on the X-Men including the following elements: Second Genesis, Band of Brothers, Transformation, Suiting Up, New Frontier: A Dose of Style, Pulling Off the Impossible, Sound and Fury and Untitled Closing.

This is where the good stuff is. Over an hour of comprehensive behind the scenes footage and talking heads taking us through the entire process, from first shortlist of directors (which didn’t include Vaughn) to the casting and visual effects sequences. It’s not breaking any boundaries of documentary filmmaking but there’s nothing like a well put together hourlong with contributions from each important voice. Well worth a watch.

13 deleted scenes:
o Erik in Argentinean Airport
o Shaw with Cuban Generals
o Charles and Moira’s Tryst, Part 1
o Charles and Erik Recruit Angel (extended)
o The Russian Truck (extended)
o Erik vs. Russian Guards (extended)
o Shaw’s Plan (extended)
o Havok Training, Part 1 (extended)
o Banshee Training, Part 1 (extended)
o Havok Training, Part 2 (extended)
o Banshee Training, Part 2 (extended)
o Hank and Raven in the Lab (extended)
o Charles and Moira’s Tryst, Part 2

Nothing hugely important was left on the cutting room floor. The relationship between Charles and Moira was hinted at in the film but given a new spin in the deleted scenes. Other than that it’s a mixed bunch but if you’re a fan of the film you’ll enjoy every extra minute.

Abrams’ new movie, Super 8? Well, Yahoo have released the viral video in it’s entirety for our viewing pleasure and we now get to see an alien introduced to it.

Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler , Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich , Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills and Amanda Michalka all star in a movie that we have big hopes for!

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

We have to wait flippin ages to see the movie as it’s not out here until August 5th. It’s out in the US now! Boooo!

But wasn’t there a CGI version released as recently as 2007 you ask? It all begins to make some sort of sense when the name of the production company behind this latest venture is revealed – Platinum Dunes.

Yep, that’s right – producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form continue their ‘throw against a wall and see if it sticks’ approach to rebooting favourite cult properties from the past, and now those renaissance artist-monikered heroes in a half-shell are next in line.

Before you all your bang your laptops shut and shove your iPhones back in your pocket in utter disgust, the trio have tapped the two screenwriters of the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. The duo have previously had a solid career in TV (working under the tutelage of J.J. Abrams for a number of Alias) so all is not lost as yet.

Here’s something that I could do with some help on but is there anyone out there who knows what this may mean? We received a package from FedEx yesterday with this rather retro looking Super 8 box. In the box was a Super 8 Reel, a memory stick and a card asking us to email the code (written in biro making it a little hard to read), 879:62J. At least I think it is a J on the end but now I’m thinking it might be a 5. I have therefore tried both!

On the memory stick is the video below which currently doesn’t mean much but is all rather intriguing. On the reel itself (by holding up to the light and squinting rather a lot to read it!), it has the same content. It starts by saying ‘Clip Missing’ and then moves on to Completion of Reel 1 Ex1A followed by END.

Check out the video we have and see if you can see what it means? Anyone got any ideas?

Abrams’ new movie, Super 8. In a world where every new poster design is the same, this one reminds of of the good old days when Spielberg would hire legendary Drew Struzan to make his posters for him. I’m not sure who was responsible for this new piece of work but we’ll try and find out for you. I guess it’s possible it is indeed Struzan who created this new piece.

This new poster gives us a great new look at the cast of the movie in drawn form although I’m afraid the date is wrong as we don’t get it until 5th August! Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills and Amanda Michalka all star in a movie that we have big hopes for!

Check out the new poster below along with some other Amblin titles which give us a similar look at this style of movie poster.
