With a career that began back in 1969, Terrence Malick has become one of the best known directors in film, despite having directed just six films in the past fifty years, well known for the gaps between his films.

More recently, however, the writer-director has been beyond prolific, winning the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes with The Tree of Life, and having an untitled film starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz, and Javier Bardem currently in post-production, due out this year.

And to add to all of that, he’s also announced, and begun preliminary filming on, Lawless, which will star Ryan Gosling in the lead, alongside Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Haley Bennett, which will shoot in the autumn. And before that, he’ll be filming Knight of Cups this summer, which will also star Bale and Blanchett, as well as Isabel Lucas.

We’ve now got some more brilliant casting news to add to both Lawless and Knight of Cups, with Deadline reporting that the ever-talented Natalie Portman is joining the already impressive casts of the two films, which means that she, Bale, and Blanchett will all be starring in them both.

The films are set to be sold at the European Film Market in Berlin tomorrow, with FilmNation selling the international territories and CAA dealing the US rights. With such an established man like Malick writing and directing, and with two sets of wonderfully talented casts, hopefully they shouldn’t have too much trouble getting picked up.

On top of winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, Malick’s last film, The Tree of Life, has three Oscar nominations to its name in the Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Cinematography categories, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out at the end of the month when the Academy Awards are held on 26^th February.

Portman, herself, is of course no stranger to the Oscars, having won Best Actress for her outstanding performance in Black Swan last year, and earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for 2004’s Closer, and these two projects will mark her first films since taking maternity leave after the birth of her first child last summer.

Having spent his childhood training at the instruction of Zeus (Luke Evans – in the guise of John Hurt so that he doesn’t break his own law forbidding divine interference), Theseus (Henry Cavill) finds himself thrust into battle when the King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) destroys his village and kills his mother in search of the legendary Epirus Bow. Joining forces with the virgin oracle (Freida Pinto) and a repentant thief (Stephen Dorff), Theseus must find the bow first and overcome the King’s army if he is to stop the Titans from being released and war spreading to the heavens.

Much has been made of the fact that Immortals is the new 300, the new Clash of the Titans and as such a joyless update of any old sword and sandal epic worth its green-screen. It’s true, just like its spiritual forebears, Immortals is almost uniformly devoid of recognisable pulse, expending disproportionately more effort on style and perfectly glistening sinew than it does on such elements as character and story. Essentially a mash-up of the most recognisable Greek myths (will someone please retire the poor Minotaur), Immortals may even boast the most derivative plot to date.

What most critics are downplaying, however, is just how striking  Tarsem Singh’s film actually is. While a particularly impressive example of set design or gorgeously composed set piece might be little substitute for an involving story, some of Immortals’ imagery goes beyond petty window dressing. Without wishing to sound conceited, there were moments during Immortals that verged on visual poetry: taken out of context, the images of writhing titans and herculean struggle verge on artistry – accidentally (very clearly accidentally) drawing comparison to such formalist works as Sergei Paradjanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates – unceremoniously spoiled by the Hollywood necessity for stock characters, truncated subtext and a creaky, uninspiring plot.

Immortals is intended as a tent-pole movie, however, and it is in this vein that director Tarsem Singh fails unequivocally; while it may boast a commendably unabashed portrait of the gods, and a cinematography that goes beyond 300′s chroma key technique, it lacks the personality of the infinitely more enjoyable Thor. Henry Cavill is more muscle than man; Freida Pinto a love interest before she is an individual and Micky Rourke, well, Micky Rourke is Iron Man 2′s Ivan Vanko transposed to ancient Greece. For all the slow motion, stereoscopy and needless grew, this couldn’t be any less engaging if it tried. There are no stakes, nobody to invest in and nothing to distract you from the encroaching tedium.

This really is encapsulated in the final conflict, in which King Hyperion’s needlessly colossal army lines up outside the Hellenic stronghold, the bow in their grasp. As Freida Pinto heroically sits the ensuing battle out, leaving Theseus to give one of the least convincing speeches ever written by a professional writer, we are left to watch as an endless reel of extras massacre one another to absolutely no effect. Even when our heroes – Theseus and the suddenly active Olympians – do battle with Hyperion and the Titans respectively, the fight scenes are so lacking in stakes that you really don’t care that Heaven is apparently short of a few gods. It’s not exactly what myths are made of.

While Immortals is unfortunately guilty of just about every criticism you are likely to throw at it – the glacial pacing, the hand-carved performances and the general inconsequence of its ending – there is one thing which ultimately marks it out as more than simply 300-lite and Clash of the Titans reheated: a genuine degree of artistic merit. A Greecian statue writ large, Immortals is as beautiful as is it is lifelessly rendered in stone.

We’ve been sent this rather nice little featurette for Immortals which hits UK cinemas a week today on 11th November. The featurette focuses around the production design for the movie which, although is CGI heavy, was still reliant on real sets to compliment the CG and to make it look as good as it possibly can. Director Tarsem Singh’s upcoming film, Immortals, is getting closer and closer to its anticipated 11^th November (11/11/11) release date, and it’s definitely a film I’m really looking forward to.

For one thing, I’m interested to see what Henry Cavill is like as a leading man ahead of his turn as Superman for Zack Snyder in the upcoming, and even more highly anticipated, Man of Steel.

But Immortals itself does look pretty fantastic, and all the things we’ve seen so far for it, from immense trailers to posters and everything in between, have been very encouraging.

It’s just a few more weeks now until we’ll be able to see Immortals on the big screen, in 2D and/or 3D, and it’s definitely looking like something worth checking out. At the very least, it looks visually very impressive. For now, enjoy these ten new pictures, and as usual, click to enlarge.

If there’s one thing that I’ve grown tired of lately it’s that one Immortals trailer that has been spliced into every trailer reel for the last 4 months (surpassed only by that blasted Real Steel trailer).  I’m pretty sure by now I can recite most Mickey Rourke and Henry Cavil’s lines!  Thankfully though, the gods themselves have seen fit to relieve my woes by finally cutting and releasing a new trailer for the film!

Now most of this new trailer is the same as the last, but without any of the silly Braveheart speech’s cut in.  I would say at least 70% of it contains the same footage as the first, but this time it seems to flow a lot better.  It also gives us a few new looks at the CGI heavy world that Tarsem Singh has created, and I believe I like it!

However as cool as false washboard abs and beautiful backdrops are, the highlight of the trailer undoubtedly comes towards the end when we finally get a better look at Isabel Lucas as Athena.  The few short clips we have show her making quick work of some fellows unfortunate enough to cross her path.  She does this all with a stylized finesse and force that has me predicting her to easily be the crowd favorite when the film opens in November. Ladies, time to stock up on your official Athena masks for Halloween!

An awesome new trailer for the upcoming film, Immortals, due out on 11^th November this year, has gone up over at RyanSeacrest.com, and it has plenty of epic new footage to add to the first trailer we saw back in April.

Tarsem Singh will be returning as director five years on from his film, The Fall, and after largely financing that film himself, the $115m. budget for Immortals is a substantial increase, and so far, it looks like the money has been put to great use.

Immortals has got a great cast with a mix of rising stars and established talent, including Henry Cavill (The Tudors, the upcoming Man of Steel), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, and the upcoming The Three Musketeers and The Hobbit), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), John Hurt (Alien, V For Vendetta), and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Iron Man 2). And it will give us a chance to see what Cavill is like in a big-budget feature role as Immortals’ protagonist, ahead of his role as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. By the looks of things, he’s definitely an actor on the rise, and deservedly so.

The film will see Cavill’s character, Theseus, pitted against King Hyperion (Rourke), who is taking his legions and destroying all of Greece in search of the lost Bow of Epirus, with which Hyperion seeks to overthrow the gods. It is Theseus to whom the task falls, chosen by the gods, to save Greece and the world from such a fate. As Pinto’s oracle character says to Theseus in this new trailer,

“I cannot change the future. You can.”

In this new trailer, we get to see Isabel Lucas in action as Athena, goddess of warfare, wisdom, justice, and skill, and her slow-motion takedown of two enemies, with their comrades’ bodies strewn across the floor around her, looks pretty immense. Lucas could well be another star to keep an eye on, having had a small but sizeable role in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen two years ago, and also starring in the upcoming Red Dawn remake opposite Chris Hemsworth.

Evans is yet another great actor in this film who’s recently been gaining more attention, being cast last week as Bard the Bowman in both parts of The Hobbit (the first official images of which were released a few days ago), and he will be seen in October this year as one of the protagonists in what is set to be an epic take on the story of The Three Musketeers by director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race). In Immortals, Evans will be playing the role of Zeus, king of the gods, and he looks pretty incredible casting himself down from the sky, and giving strength to Cavill’s Theseus in the trailer’s final scenes.

Five character posters for Tarsem Singh’s new Greek fantasy, Immortals, made their debut at this week’s Wondercon in San Francisco, and now you can see them for yourselves below (courtesy of Fandango).

The comparisons with Zack Snyder’s 300 extend beyond the fact that both films share a producer (which is the obvious marketing hook being used on the top of each poster). Judging by the lush visuals here, they seem to be very much cut from the same visual cloth too, although it remains to be seen if Tarsem can deliver an equally riveting yarn alongside the undoubtedly impressive imagery – something which has eluded him so far in his previous cinematic outings.

This tale of warring god also has an impressive cast (including the likes of Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto and Stephen Dorff), although the characters below are represented by a bunch of relative newcomers.

First in the list of Superman-to-be Henry Cavill as Theseus, Luke Evans as Zeus, Kellan (Twilight) Lutz as Poseidon, young British actor Daniel Sharman as Aries and Australian actress Isabel Lucas as Athena.

For those of you who had forgotten that a remake of cult 80’s Ruskies US home invasion action flick Red Dawn was on the way (I know I did), Latino Review has posted the first image and the film’s logo. As this is an MGM production, it’s probably safe to assume that a release date is around the corner too given that, financially speaking, the company is back on track.

This time around the gang of ragtag teenagers have to fight off the Chinese who invade their homeland. Not sure why they would go to the trouble of launching a military attack in this day and age when they could probably just as easily purchase the required nuclear weaponry, but there you go.

Filling the boots of the original cast members (a typically 80’s bratpack-y ensemble which included the late Patrick Swayze, his Dirty Dancing sweetheart Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen) are Thor himself Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and Isabel Lucas.

The film is directed by veteran stuntman Dan Bradley, whose experience on the likes of Crank and the last two Bourne pictures should at least guarantee some decent bangs for bucks.

After all the Vampire rule breaking nonsense that was Twilight, it was a real pleasure to watch the enjoyable Day Breakers and witness a bloody, gory, entertaining and faithful rule abiding Vampire film with a very interesting take on the Vampire story.

Day breakers is set in a 2019 dystopian sci-fi future where Vampires rule the world after an unknown virus turns majority of the worlds population into Vampires and now humans are the endangered species, at only 5% of the worlds population, which are hunted and farmed for their blood, but with the human race facing extinction and blood supplies running dangerously low a new food source is needed to sustain the population of Vampires.

So introducing another Edward the Vampire, Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), who’s a hematologist working for the company that farms humans for blood. Edward is given the burdening responsibility in finding an artificial substitute for human blood to prevent Vampires turning into a vicious vampire killing Feral mutation due to starvation, a problem that is increasing within the poor society of the Vampire world.

Problem for Edward is that he has sympathy for the human race and gets involved with a group of human survivors that’s lead by Lionel ‘Elvis’ Cormac (Willem Dafoe) a human that claims to have once been a Vampire but was cured. Could this be the solution for the blood shortage, a cure to change everyone back. But that is the dilemma of the story, if you could live forever with no disease or pain (unless you walked into sunlight and fried) why would you want to change back into a human.

The film starts off brilliantly showing how Vampires live at night, living as they did as humans by commuting to work on the train and buying coffee (although with 20% blood in it) for their journey. They have adapted buildings, cars and their homes to prevent sunlight leaking in with a daily public address announcement warning that sunrise is due within the hour and as well as having alarms notifying you that your lights are on on your vehicle, there are alarms letting you know UV levels are high outside. It’s a well thought out concept.

Head of the Bromley Marks company that farms humans for blood is Charles Bromley (Sam Neill), the villain of the film that has become as complacent as almost everyone else as the stocks of humans diminishes and cares little for both races as long as he makes money due to the rises prices of blood stocks. There is a subplot involving Charles Daughter Alison (Isabel ‘ruined Transformers’ Lucas) that seemed completely pointless but led to a nice execution scene.

Edward joins the human survivors and learns how Elvis was turned back to a human, the idea is dubious but well carried out but difficult to bite as a solution to cure Vampires back to human, but to progress the story it works well and gives hope to the Human race and also gives hope to Charles Bromley as he can use this procedure to create more stocks of humans instead of using it to cure the world of Vampires which is what Edward and Elvis want to do, is another interesting dilemma for the characters to face.

Overall the film is a excellent idea, not executed as well as it probably read off the page but never-the-less it has enough to entertain and with Ethan Hawke in top form as Edward and Willem Dafoe clearly enjoying himself, the two actors make Day Breakers a decent film and without them I doubt it would have been anywhere near as enjoyable.
Sam Neill is solid enough as the blood sucking CEO but apart from them the rest of the cast were quite insignificant as characters and were just fodder for everyone else. The Spierig Brothers, who directed, competently make the film work with a superb visual look and use ideas that work well with the characters and the concept.

The Good: The story was brilliant, The Vampires are dam cool putting the Twilight versions to shame and the mutated Feral Vampires, that were seriously underused, were a formidable enemy to both humans and Vampires that will probably be explored more in a possible sequel but should have been more of an enemy force in this film instead of Charles Bromley’s business minded villainy.
The armour of the Vampire troops that enable day walking for Vampires was nice and of course the blood and gore was very realistically done with an experiement on a volunteer vampire of the effects of being injected with the artificial blood was a real pleaser as too was a main characters death in a lift at the end that was brutally pleasing.

The Bad: The plot went a bit crazy towards the end, Isabel Lucas was just used as eye candy in a pointless story arc, Cheesy dialogue, slowly paced at times and a desperate attempt to set up a sequel.

Day Breakers is well worth a watch for a new, interesting and smart Vampire story that I really liked and completely forgive it’s flaws.

Although it’s yet another vampire movie, Daybreakers which stars Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas and Willem Dafoe has got me intrigued as it seems to approach the whole ‘vampire’ thing from a completely different angle. A mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world’s population into vampires. Here’s the poster (click to enlarge) for Daybreakers that MTV released today. The trailer came out back in June but I don’t think we’ve posted it previously and it looks pretty cool so I thought I’d get it up here!It’s a vampire movie but don’t let that put you off as it looks like a completely new storyline that we’ve not seen the likes of before.

The movie is directed by brothers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig and stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman, Vince Colosimo, Isabel Lucas and Sam Neill.There’s not UK release date as yet but we’ll keep you posted.
