From the moment I woke up that morning I knew something incredible was going to happen.

It was press day for the film “Chronicle” and I was set to interview the films Director Josh Trank and the three main cast members Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan. I drove to the 20th Century Fox studio and was shuffled into a soundstage for my interviews.

First up was Director Josh Trank. Our interview was fine up until he let slip that he had specifically cast DeHaan, Russell & Jordan because of their unique abilities. Unique abilities?  I continued to pester him for information until he said they “might” have their own telekinetic secrets.  It was preposterous, I know, but for some reason the PR person in the room ended the interview right then and there and sent me off to interview the cast.  Strange right?

I still had another 2 minutes with him. I walked next door to another soundstage containing our “heroes”.  Before asking my prepared questions I had to see if what Trank had let slip had any weight to it.  The video below is actual footage from my interview that was never supposed to see the light of day.

Luckily I have some sneaky friends who work at the studio and they were able to send this over to me. I was asked to sign a piece of paper saying I would never speak about what I saw there that day.  I gladly signed in exchange for  proper interviews.  Seeing as those interviews are now up (Josh Trank & Cast) for the world to see I thought it a perfect time to reveal this to our readers.

As with the other DVDs of Morris’s work, and I’m thinking specifically of The Day Today and the sublime Brass Eye, there is a wonderful menu when you load up the disc – totally surreal, and completely correct for the film. Immediately you know you’re in good hands.

I reviewed this film when it was released in UK cinemas and re-reading it I can’t add anything more. It’s a wickedly funny, heartbreaking work which deserves to be seen by as large an audience as possible. Whatever you think of Morris and his previous work his feature film debut is phenomenally strong and characteristically challenging, helped in no small part by an impeccable cast.

Warp films and Morris have put a huge amount of work into making the Blu-ray worthy of the film, and while the reaction to film I saw unfold online was generally positive, with most people finding the film hilarious (remember this poster?), there is a powerful social subtext which evidences the years of research Morris undertook.

What makes this Blu-ray a must for your collection is the combination of a wonderful, powerful film and some truly remarkable special features. Yes, you get to see Morris running through a car park like a constipated ostrich as part of the comprehensive behind the scenes featurettes, but there’s a fascinating mini documentary which serves as an example of the type of research which fed into the film’s depiction of the film’s central characters.

Also there is a very nice look at the film’s premiere in Bradford with the cast and director, and the fun they had on the film is evident as is the passion for tackling the subject matter in such a fearless manner.

If you’re a fan of Chris Morris you’ll already have this one on pre-order, and if you missed this at the cinema my advice is clear – buy it and enjoy one of the most emotionally engaging and funny films you’ll see all year.

Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Scott Pilgrim.

If you’re familiar with Scott Pilgrim you’ll know that Ramona has seven evil exes and one of these is Hollywood star Lucas Lee, played by real life Hollywood star Chris Evans in Edgar Wright’s forthcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

In the original Scott Pilgrim comics there are glimpse of some of Lucas Lee’s cinematic atrocities in poster form and Edgar Wright has carried this across into his film adaptation. Embedded below (thanks to Empire) you can see the fake posters created for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Another impressive piece of marketing for Edgar Wright’s anticipated Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and it’s one of the finest examples of the interactive trailer I’ve seen so far.

Dolled up in its 8-bit glory, this new trailer offers the viewer the chance to hear from Edgar Wright as the trailer plays, giving his usual generous insight into the shots and the inspirations evident.

Word is already coming out of the various screenings and it seems as though Wright continues his winning streak with Pilgrim, we’re seeing it next week and, no – we can’t wait.

I’m going to keep this brief, but suffice to say that some of you have already seen Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

That’s a fact which makes me jealous, but I’m not begrudging anyone having seen this – it looks like a wonderful mixture of anarchy and 8-bit charm and these pics, released today via the Scott Pilgrim Facebook page, just make the long wait until it hits our screens even worse.

In amongst these production stills you’ll see Mr. Wright doing his directing thing, as well as finished shots from the movie (and I can’t help but feel pleased at the pixelated glow around that huge weapon Ramona is sporting in pic number 8), so here are the pics, enjoy Pilgrim Pilgrims.

I am worried Universal Pictures and in turn, director of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Edgar Wright, are in danger of giving away the entire movie in clip form for their new movie.

Scott Pilgrim is released in the UK 25th August and stars Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Lucas Lee (Chris Evans), Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh), Roxy Richter (Mae Whitman), Kyle (Shota Saito) and Ken Katayanagi (Keita Saito) and Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman), of all who Michael Cera’s character, Scott Pilgrim must defeat in battle in order to win the hand of Ramona V. Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

Comic Con has proved a perfect ending point for all the Scott Pilgrim Pilgrims with director Edgar Wright unexpectedly playing the film to the collected fans, and early word reviews are peppered with hyperbole and acclaim.

Those of us not at Comic Con won’t get to see it until the end of August but there’s a new clip to go alongside the cavalcade of other media put out for this film.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is barely a month away, and with the San Diego Comic Con this weekend the already impressive marketing campaign has reached overdrive.

Over the last few days we’ve seen two new posters, seven remixes of the trailer, and an entire hotel exterior branded to promote the movie. Now MTV have scored an exclusive clip from the film. And like everything else we’ve seen so far, it has the feel of the comics, without being a slave to fidelity.

It’s pretty safe to assume we’ll be getting even more Scott Pilgrim news over the next few days. In addition to tomorrow’s panel discussion, there looks to be a fair bit of Pilgrim-pushing going on at the con, certainly if this pic, taken by /Film’s Peter Sciretta, is anything to go by.

There’s also the small matter of the sixth and final volume of the comic series, Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour, which was released yesterday. It’s not really the place here for a review, but in short, it’s very, very good, and wraps up the story nicely.

Ashton Kutcher’s new movie Killers had it’s world premiere where Lionsgate decided not only to stream the red carpet live, they also showed an internet only exclusive showing the first 13 minutes of the movie. Killers also stars Kathrine Heigl, Catherine O’Hara, Tom Selleck and is directed by Robert Luketic.

Seems a bit odd to me but I guess we’re going to see more of thing sort of thing. I know Tom Cruise’ Valkyrie and Russell Brand’s Get Him to the Greek and Boondock Saints 2 have all released the first five minutes of the movie but this is the first time that nearly 15 minutes of a movie has been released to my knowledge.

Last week, I attended the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time press conference in a lovely hotel in London. All the stars were there including leading man, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Sir Ben Kingsley, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Mike Newell and the creator of the Prince of Persia computer game franchise, Jordan Mechner.

The lovely people at Disney were kind enough to give me the press conference footage in full and I really wanted to share it with you. I’ve stopped putting up full press conferences as most the time, they’re pretty dull but not this one as Jake Gyllenhaal was on comedy form and had the audience laughing throughout. Since we were so amused, I thought you might be too.

I had to edit it slightly as Sir Ben gave away a spoiler from the movie so the footage is slightly edited in two places. You’ll also get to hear me ask a question. See if you can spot me! We’ll be bringing you interviews with all the cast next week along with my review of the film. I’m really looking forward to seeing Four Lions as I’m a huge fan of Chris Morris and am intrigued to see what he does with the difficult premise of the film.

When Chris Morris announced he was making a comedy film about terrorism, specifically suicide bombers, it was inevitable that there would be a backlash.

The BBC are running a story today which details the reaction to Four Lions, Morris’s debut feature film which is out in cinemas today, from some of the people who lost relatives in the bombings of the 7th of July 2005 and their call for cinemas and audiences to boycott the film.

It’s an understandable reaction to being told that someone notorious for making ‘shocking’ comedy about provocative subjects is making a comedy about suicide bombers in London, only this is misunderstanding its aims – Four Lions is full of tragedy and a cloying sadness and never fails to detail the bleak and misguided spiral of fear and anger which leads to terrorism.

Chris Morris has made a film which respects everyone expect the stupid, and holds a mirror up to our society with these fractured and scared people making an impossibly stupid and tragic decision. There is nothing in this film which seeks to make light of violent death, indeed every death which happens on screen is tragic, pointless and shocking, though there are very funny moments in the film these never stem from the murderous actions the group want to carry out.

Four Lions leaves the hyperbole and obvious rhetoric of the tabloid anger, which is an understandable reaction to the 7th of July bombers, and seeks to do two things. Firstly to show the incompetence behind the would-be martyrs and also it seeks to find the human story behind these groups, the jealousy and the cowardice, every negative emotion brought to boil and this is the most effective way of taking the power away from these people who carry out these actions.

I was in London on the 7th of July, along with millions of others, and I was living five minutes from Liverpool Street and Aldgate where one of the bombers struck. It was a sobering gut punch of a day in which my city and my home was hit four times and I recall the awful realisation visible on the faces of people on the streets as news filtered out. I can’t begin to comprehend the pain of those who lost loved ones in the 2005 bombings, and while they are condemning the film without actually seeing it their reluctance to see the film is understandable, but this film is part of the healing process – helping us to face the terror and see its flawed, human face.

On the 7th of July there was horror, then fear, then as the day wore on there was a defiance which carried thousands of stranded workers as they walked the streets of London trying to find their way out of the city. Four Lions is part of this defiance, channeled through an intelligent and undaunted moral compass and makes for uncomfortable viewing at times, but this is good. We need to be reminded that terrorism is here, thankfully very rarely resulting in tragic events like those of the 7th of July, but also that it is about people, not faceless armies waiting in the shadows.

The film is funny, as it was intended to be, but it was never going to be as simple as watching a buffonish terrorist cell blowing up crows and singing along to Toploader. Four Lions does not condone the actions carried out by these people, nor does it seek to garner sympathy for them, instead the only reaction is sadness. And it takes a film like Four Lions to make something worthwhile out of the tragedy of terrorism and I hope people do go out and see it today.

With the hugely influential media satires of Brass Eye and The Day Today behind him Chris Morris has fixed his eye on a subject which doesn’t so much court controversy but stick its tongue down its throat – a comedy about suicide bombers.

And it takes someone with the comic genius and moral intelligence of  Morris to make it funny, touching and leaving you with an indelible feeling of sadness and even sympathy for this group of hapless men.

Following his BAFTA winning short My Wrongs, Chris Morris’s feature film debut, Four Lions, concerns itself with a group of British Muslims intent on a suicide bombing, though all but one of the group are more intoxicated by the notion of martyrdom than the actual reality. In essence it is about four men in search of a purpose in life, but Morris throws in familial loyalty, idiotic twists of logic, surreal comedy of the darkest kind, religious angst and a collision of identity crises which make this film so much more than a comedy about terrorism.

This is a modern British classic, truly hilarious and unique, combining amazing performances with a twisted, almost surreal, momentum. It is a fine feature debut from Chris Morris, who has matured here into a capable director while maintaining the darkness and freakish nature of his previous works. If you’re a fan of his work then you will love it, if you’re not a fan then prepare to become one.

The film has been compared to This is Spinal Tap and this is partly a valid comparison, particularly when it comes to lifting the veil of fundamentalism to reveal a petty, selfish, farcical and ultimately human element to this group of people. Where the film differs from this comparison is the character of Omar, whose conflicting emotions and loyalties make up the beating heart of this film and it is his scenes with his family, especially the beautiful touch of the altered version of the bedtime story he reads to his son, which distance this film from merely being a Dad’s Mujahid.

The years of research Morris undertook pays off handsomely, and despite the expected tabloid frenzy this film will offend no-one but the stupid, and where the film succeeds most is the interplay between the main characters. Riz Ahmed, in particular, as the conflicted and pious Omar is an outstanding screen presence and carries the emotional momentum of the film through to its end, and his relationship with Waj (Kayvan Novak) is heartbreaking and hilarious, a fine line walked by both actors and writers.

Nigel Lindsay, Adeel Akhtar and Arsher Ali, who plays a nervous new recruit are all believable and brilliant in their roles, each bringing their own neuroses to a group which breaks apart and implodes as the film goes on. Nigel Lindsay’s Barry is a monster of cowardice and self-hatred whose terrible demented logic has a poisonous effect on the group and Lindsay plays it wonderfully.

Morris and his co-writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong should be praised for their ability to garner sympathy for these people, if not their aim, and it is this duality which is the film’s greatest triumph. I can’t go into spoilers here because this is a film you need to go in fresh for – the trailers you’ve seen may play up on the slapstick and the marvelous and nonsensical logic of the dialogue, but this film has a depth which its trademark Morris silliness belies.

There are moments of brilliance in Four Lions, both in the relationships whose development is heartbreaking and the events which shock and are gut punches, but Morris earns every single one of them. I couldn’t have imagined a better debut for Morris, who has established himself beyond his role as spearhead of a brutally satirical comedy generation and Four Lions is a triumph on every level. It has so much to say about this country and the conflicting identities we are left with after years of distant wars, and it is, importantly, brilliantly funny.

Film4 and Warp Films are to be congratulated for backing this film, and should reap the rewards – so go out and see it as soon as you can.

A favourite at Sundance and long awaited by fans of Chris Morris’s work on The Day Today and Brass Eye, the jihadi comedy Four Lions has a great new poster.

Empire had this one first and it shows a total understanding of the pitch black humour expected to fuel the film.

The film tells of a group of would-be suicide bombers in search of a cause and a clue, it stars Riz Ahmed, Nigel Lindsay, Adeel Ahktar, Kayvan Novak and Arsher Ali and is Morris’s first feature film and the buzz at Sundance was substantial and should help it pass through the storm of tabloid controversy it will no doubt incur on its release.

There was a small scene released on the internet recently and it gives an indication as to what we can expect from Mr Morris in his “latest campaign of morally corrupt sick filth” (quote from The Daily Mail, May 7th edition – when the film is released here).

It’s Oscar Nomination day today and at 13.30 GMT, Anne Hathaway will be announcing the nominations at some unearthly hour in a hotel in Los Angeles. We here at HeyUGuys are big supporters of Moon and all things Duncan Jones and Sam Rockwell but we’ve got a sneaky suspicion that Colin Firth could not only get nominated but may win the Oscar for Best Actor.  I guess we’ll find out later on today if our suspicions of them even being nominated will come to fruition but in the meantime, here’s some footage from the UK Premiere of A Single Man that took place last night.

This is the movie industry, however, and that means that it’s never too early to look at the big Summer blockbusters. Here are the five i might just be looking forward to most.

The A-Team

When is it? - US 11th June UK 30th July

Who is it? – Directed by Joe Carnahan. Starring Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copely, Bradley Cooper, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Jessica Biel

What is it? – Movie version of one of the most iconic TV series ever. In the words of that fantastic intro… “In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.”

Why am I excited? – It’s the A-Team! What more do you need? The A-Team was huge, and firmly my era. Carnahan has showed the ability to craft knockabout action and thriller with Narc and Smokin’ Aces. The movie features some actors who made a big impact last year. Liam Neeson showed his action chops in Taken, Bradley Cooper scored in comedy of the year The Hangover. Sharlto Copley was the star that ran last year’s surprise hit District 9, arguably the best sci-fi movie of the year. And of course, Quinton ’Rampage’ Jackson… hang on, this belongs in the next bit…

But? – ‘Rampage’ Jackson is a bit of an unknown acting wise. He looks the part, but may be the weak link of the lead four. Released not long after The Losers will have finished it’s run, and The Losers has the potential to be far better written and a lot less silly than The A-Team. Movie versions of classic television shows don’t have the best pedigree. Charlie’s Angels, Starsky and Hutch, The Saint? Let’s hope it’s more in line with Mission: Impossible.

Toy Story 3

When? – US 18th June UK 23rd July

Who? – Directed by Lee Unkrich. The voice talents of Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, etcetera etcetera

What? – The second sequel to Toy Story, featuring all the original characters and a couple of new ones. Young Andy, the toys’ owner, isn’t so young any more, and is off to college. The gang are sent to a day care centre, and hilarity ensues…

Why? – For all around family entertainment, Pixar’s Toy Story series are considered both the turning point and the pinnacle of animated movies. They perfected the blend of child friendly action and adult friendly humour, and have arguably yet to be bettered. Pixar movies have evolved since, and recent movies Wall*E and Up have dealt with much more mature issues, so it’ll be interesting to see to what extent Toy Story follows in their footsteps.

But? – Director of the first two movies John Lasseter is handing over the reigns to Lee Unkrich, will the same magic still be there? With the addition of yet more characters, there’s a danger of the story being overstuffed (Sorry).

Predators

When? – US 7th July UK TBA

Who? – Directed by Nimrod Antal. Starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne

What? – The latest addition to the popular Predator franchise. Members of the fearsome alien race are stalking a unit of elite commandos

Why? – The first Predator was a fantastic action movie. The idea of technologically advanced aliens doing battle with ultra-tough marines is a pretty kick-ass concept, and Predators looks like it will follow that dynamic. The presence of Adrian Brody, and to a lesser extent Topher Grace suggests we may be offered more complex characterisations than in previous installments. Director Antal’s recent Armored showed enough action and tense thriller to suggest he’s capable of doing a good job here.

But? – The attempt to resurrect and continue the Terminator series after an extended period has been a failure. Aside from the first Predator movie, the franchise hasn’t exactly been strong. Predator 2 was a dissapointment, and the presumably non-canon Alien Vs Predator movies have been awful.

Inception

When? – US 16th July UK TBA

Who? – Directed by Christopher Nolan. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt,

What? – A corporation has discovered the technology to allow entry into peoples dreams. There’s some kind of blackmail plot, and a twisty, turny storyline (I assume. Nolan and co are keeping things pretty close to their chest for now).

Why? –  By arguably the best director of the last decade, starring one of the finest actors of his generation alongside the man tipped as the next big thing? Nolan has a track record of putting together great casts. His characteristic intelligent, twisting plot-lines are a perfect match for a story that takes place ‘within the architecture of the mind’.

But? – Nolan has flirted with sci-fi with The Prestige, but it was regarded as a cheat in that particular movie, and a full blown sci-fi storyline is new territory for the gifted filmmaker. Dark Knight topped many lists of the best movies of the last decade, meaning a lot is expected of Inception, possibly too much. It’s difficult to see how it could ever live up to it’s predecessor.

The Expendables

When? – US 13th August UK TBA

Who? – Directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, also starring Jet Li, Jason Stathum, Dolph Lungren, Steve Austin, with reported cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenneger.

What? – a team of deadly mercenaries go on a mission to overthrow an evil dictator in the jungles of South America. There may not by much more story to it than that…

Why? – The cream of the action movie crop coming together for the ultimate men on a mission gun fest has awesome written all over it. Whether it turns out to be a great action movie or as camp as a row of tents, The Expendables will be unmissable. Individually the cast wouldn’t generate a lot of box office, but as an ensemble this is a once in a lifetime project that’ll make hundreds of millions. Stallone has much experience with this kind of movie, having written, directed and acted through much of the Rambo series, as well as many other action movies.

But? – With so many big names, and big egos, there could be a lot of squabbling for elbow room and screen time. Your favourite may only get a few minutes of screen time, or a couple of lines of dialogue. The latter may however be a blessing, because although all icons, there isn’t a respected ‘actor’ among them.

It takes someone with the sickest twist of a comedic imagination to write a comedy film about a group of incompetent jihadists; it takes someone with the talent of Chris Morris to make it work and with the first clip to emerge from his film Four Lions, it seems he has succeeded.

We reported a few whiles back that Morris’s comedy film would premiere at Sundance and if I’m right then lucky Sundancers should be seeing it tonight, and it’s a fine cinematic beginning for a comic talent whose influence defined the school playgrounds and bad radio presenters for years after the successes of Brass Eye, The Day Today and Blue Jam.

That his BBC compadre Armando Innanucci is currently basking in the spotlight of success for his sharp toothed satire In The Loop I’m hopeful that the world will take to Four Lions with the same enthusiasm.

The chaps over at Cinematical have released the first footage from Ironclad which is still filming over in Wales. We had our first image of James Purefoy swinging the biggest sword (a real one you dirty minded people) in the world last week and this footage sites nicely alongside it. I do struggle when I see Mackenzie Crook to not think of him in the office playing a serious role firing arrows at people but I think that’s my issue. The movie also stars The movie stars Richard Attenborough, Robert Carlyle, Bob Hoskins, Pete Postlethwaite, Brian Cox, William Moseley, Jason Flemyng,  Kate Mara and is directed by Jonathan English.

Cinematical: This footage is from the first two weeks of filming, so it’s pretty rough, the soundtrack is temporary, and it was filmed prior to pre-Paul Giamatti being cast as King John. But there’s still an impressive level of carnage on display, and everything remotely sharp or heavy is being wielded in defence of Rochester Castle. There’s no slick choreography, it’s just white-knuckle, balls-to-the wall medieval warfare. They still found room for a few explosions, though. Remember, King John used pig fat to melt the walls, so there was definitely a lot of falling stone during this siege.
