Fox Searchlight have just sent us this great featutette for their new movie, Martha Marcy May Marlene which is released in UK cinemas tomorrow. It has a great cast many of whom you’ll see in this featurette which takes you behind the scenes of the movie to see how it was made.

Elizabeth Olsen stars in director Sean Durkin’s psychological thriller, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, about a young woman who undergoes an explosive crisis of identity after escaping the confines of a rural cult-like farming community. Trapped by unsettling flashes of memories from the past and visions of a perilous future, she becomes taken over by an unsettling sense of fear, leaving her consumed by paranoia and a mysterious burden of guilt.

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE played to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, garnering a Directing Award for Durkin, and also screened at the Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard where it received rave reviews. The film recently opened in the US to impressive box office figures. Critics have hailed the performance of breakout star Elizabeth Olsen, and cited her portrayal of Martha as one of the leading candidates for awards success.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves across the UK today and if you want to know what we thought of it, keep your eyes peeled for Jon’s review. The movie has a stonking British cast which includes Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, David Dencik, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke and Ciarán Hinds. The movie is based on the book by John le Carré and is helmed by Tomas Alfredson.

We’ve been sent this great featurette which you’ll find on the Blu-ray extras and it centers around George Smiley played by Gary Oldman in the movie. As you’ll see when you watch the featutrette, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is very much not a James Bond esk spy tail but it’s even describe it as an ante-bond.

We’ve been given this fantastic featurette called ‘Designing and Empire’ from the awesome TV series that is HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. I look forward to watching it every week and it is definitely one of my favourite shows of 2011 (along with A Game of Thrones!)

This featurette has interviews with Production Designer Bob Shaw and writer Terence Winter and looks specifically at the production design of the show and is here to celebrate the release of Boardwalk Empire Season 1 on DVD and Blu-ray on 9th January 2012. We get to see a time-lapse of the Boardwalk being built while we’re told how the boardwalk itself is put together.

Universal Studios have just released the first featurette for their new movie, Battleship which is set for release next year. In this featurette which has the name ‘real heroes’, we get to hear from the real life US marines that have helped to make the movie. Most of the extras that you’ll see in this movie are actual marines doing the job and have helped Director Peter Berg to make the movie as real as possible. If you missed the trailer, you can catch up here.

Universal Studios have give us this fantastic exclusive featurette to coincide with the Blu-ray release of the greatest dinosaur movie ever made, Jurassic Park. The Blu-ray is released in the UK 24th October. Jurassic Park for me is an all-time classic and I love everything about it. It was ground-breaking on so many levels and I’m so pleased it’s making its way to Blu-ray packed to the rafters with special features (all of which are listed below).

One of those special features is this featurette focusing on the music in Jurassic Park with the title ‘A Whole New Level’. John Williams provides the score for the film and in the featurette, all the sound effects have been stripped to let you see simply the score that plays during a few select scenes. One of those scenes is the raptor kitchen scene which is on the list for one of the most intense scenes ever devised in my opinion! The feature has interviews with John Williams and Joseph Mazzello who both talk about the intensity of the score in the movie. Scroll down and have a watch!

Warner Bros. have released the first clip / featurette from the Blu-ray release of their eight and final movie in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. In the short clip, we get to see Director, David Yates narrate the kiss that Rupert Grint (Ron) and Emma Watson (Hermione) have to share in the depths of Hogwarts. He describes them as being like brother and sister and how Watson wanted to nail it in one take. It’s quite funny when you watch their faces before and after the scene.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is directed by David Yates, stars Daniel Radcliffe , Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Ciarán Hinds, John Hurt, Jason Isaacs, Matthew Lewis, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, David Thewlis, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright and is set for home entertainment release 2nd December. More Sucker Punching for you today on the day of release for the Blu-ray and DVD, and if you’ve not sashayed into the fray yet these two clips may just tempt you to do so.

Craig posted his article on giving Sucker Punch a second chance earlier today and judging from the response the film’s divisive qualities are fostering strong opinions with some folks loving the action and look of the film, others agree with Craig and find there’s more to Snyder’s film when you scratch the surface, other still are turned off by it completely.

These two clips come from one of the film’s many action sequences and give you a flavour of what the film’s visual style. My professional opinion is that it’s utterly nuts. See if you agree…

A Tom Hanks’ film will usually follow the same sentimental pattern of ‘loser triumphs’, making them predictably feel-good, heart-felt and all-American. With Hanks in the title role, Larry Crowne is no exception as the amicable star brings his charismatic warmth and inoffensive humour to yet another human story.

The story cashes in on current times of austerity and looming cuts, with Crowne (Hanks), the hardworking and perfect employee of a retail company, being made redundant, as he cannot climb the corporate ladder into management without a college education. Struck dumb by his harsh treatment, he refuses to wallow in self-pity, and is determined to make a better man of himself by going back to college and getting qualified. What Crowne doesn’t vouch for is a completely new, youthful identity and the acceptance into a cool college scooter gang – or the growing affections of his attractive lecturer, Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), who is in a dead-end marriage. Things are looking up.

Larry Crowne is textbook Hanks – not surprising as he wrote, produced, acted and directed it, which is a first for the star. This watchable if measurably prudent offering is inspiring, purely because it tugs at the heartstrings and triggers the emotions of most working folk who can sympathise with Crowne’s position in today’s temperamental job climate. It also positions the likable Hanks opposite his Charlie Wilson’s War co-star, Roberts, once more, in a successful screen partnership that shows both actors off in their best light.

That said Roberts will forever play a variation of her Pretty Woman Vivian Ward character, a smart, opinionated and misunderstood beauty, caught in a rut and going against her character’s appealing independent nature to fall back on a man to ‘complete her’. The actress has very little else on offer as she matures in her film roles. Again, Roberts plays up her character’s acidic, though witty retorts in this – hardly surprising, considering some of the pupils Mrs Tainot must deal with. But Roberts just comes across as more bitter than sassy in such a role as the years roll on, and this character will blend in with her other performances. Nevertheless it’s her partnership with Hanks that will be the film’s memorable and redeeming quality.

Larry Crowne is also great fun to watch Hanks in ‘mid-life crisis mode’, squeezing into tight trendy gear and having a (real-life) hoot learning to handle a scooter and getting out on the open road. Think Grease 2’s Michael Carrington, only much older, as the cute ‘nerd that turns’ gets the girl. As a result of its leads’ ages and the topics, this film is targeting an older, more established audience, though it translates perfectly well in an almost immature manner for ‘teacher crush’ value, whatever your age.

Hanks fans will revel in their hero’s hour in this innocuous tale that’s well intentioned for all its mediocre happenings and foreseeable ending. If nothing else, Larry Crowne could kick-start some serious soul searching and stalled existences.

Have you ever been sacked?

I have never experienced what poor Larry does where he walks in a room on top of the world and found out that he’s losing his job.  Once I thought I was doing a movie because the Producers, the Director and the Studio all told me I was and then had a meeting with them only to receive a phone call the next day from my agent who says ‘What happened’ because I’m not doing the movie anymore!? I don’t know what happened and no one explained.

Was that early on in your career?

Not as early as you’d think. You’ll never know what movie that was but it didn’t do that well!

How did you find directing your wife and how did she come up with that look?

She said ‘what should I do’? I said ‘Baby, do something wild’. I kept getting text photos of her trying on different wigs and I got red ones, black ones and when she put on that blonde one she looked exactly like her niece and I said ‘That it’s’. I told her to find herself a good tight power suit and soem stilettos which go clakity clac and she was constantly upbeat lady at the bank with a complementary coffee which says ‘you’re not getting the money’.

It was fun to direct her. It was a great scene because she powered it. We only shot for a day and we added the scene at the end where I give back the strategic foreclosure as I saw a news article on it the week before about people who say I can’t pay for myself and give it back to the bank and walk away.

Why’s it taken you so long to direct your second feature?

Directing is a constant test of your communicative powers. You’re constantly trying to explain to people a vision and want you want. I didn’t have those instinctive talents when I did ‘That Thing You Do’. I love that movie and loved everything about it and it came out pretty dang good but at the end of the day I wish I hadn’t been worried about things as much as I were and had paid more attention to some other things which were in my power.

I have that a little bit more at my disposal now so I’m not nearly as intimidated at the idea of directing. I have a certain degree of strengths. None of them are cinematic unfortunately. I think I know how to get a spirit of a scene together and there are some scenes which make themselves perfectly and other times where I need the help of the actors, the cinematographer and a few other people.

I’m not a director at the end of the day, I’m a storyteller, I run a company and I can direct but instinctively I’m an actor and that’s where I went in the 15 years between ‘That Thing You do’ and ‘Larry Crowne’.

What kind of ambition did the guy that made Bachelor Party have and how does the reality matched the dream?

The guy who made Bachelor Party couldn’t believe he was in a movie, being paid to come on and do this stuff. The guy was hoping he would get another job after Bachelor Party and that seems to have worked out ok. The guy in Larry Crowne hopes he’s going to have another job after that.

I still have the same amount of enthusiasm and fun. The day before we start shooing a movie I can’t sleep because I’m too excited about doing it. Whether it’s Road to Perdition, Apollo 13 or The Green Mile I still can’t wait to get up and do it. He’s a little slower, older and heavier but still has that enthusiastic boyish smile doesn’t he?!

How did you find writing the lessons scripts that we see in Larry Crowne?

We wrote so much of the speech class and then we did research by videotaping public speaking classes at Santa Monica City College and it was almost verbatim. We’d made it up! I thought a teacher might say something like this and she might get people up and saying something like this and it was literally the first day for public speaking with English as a second language.

Are you a natural on scooter?

I am now! It’s one thing to pass a written test but there is a question with multiple answers and I swear, all the answers work! The man who was testing me was so overjoyed to have me that I don’t think he was paying much attention to all the mistakes I was making!

Was there a point in your career where you thought you could take control of it?

There’s a period of time where you just can’t believe (Bachelor Party or what have you) where they offer you a job and you just take it. After I did A League of Their Own, I said ‘I’m 37, I’m not a young man anymore and I wanted to play men in bitter compromise rather than ‘the dad who did the thing’ or ‘the man who wants to fall in love’ or variations of those 80s movies, so many people made including me. It was the type of thing that I could control.

I got to see Bridesmaids at SXSW earlier in the year and absolutely loved it (my review here). It was a movie which just went with the flow and had the audience in stitches. Some have compared it to The Hangover for women but it shouldn’t be put in the same box or even close. This movie is simply hilarious and when you watch this featurette that Universal Studios have put out via Funny or Die, you’ll see why.

The featurette just shows how many takes were done on each scene and it must have been a heck of a job for director Paul Feig and his edtiors to bring together the funniest clips as everything you see here is ad-lib genius! Check it out below.

Both these new featurettes are from the ‘Making-of’ section of the Part 1 Blu-ray with the first talking on the legends of the Three Brothers who found the Deathly Hallows followed by Nick Moran talking us through the chase sequence in the woods which were filmed right here (HeyUGuys South Towers) in Surrey.

The final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is directed by David Yates and sees Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all back as Harry, Hermione and Ron respectively. It’s released in cinemas 15th July in 3d! The DVD / Blu-ray of Part 1 hits UK stores this Monday, 11th April and you can pre-order your copy here.

Synopsis: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” is the final adventure in the Harry Potter film series.  The much-anticipated motion picture event is the second of two full-length parts.

In the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war.  The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe.  But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort.

Last night, Ben and I took to the red carpet in Leicester Square in London, England for the UK premiere of Zack Snyder’s new movie, Sucker Punch. Snyder has previously directed 300, Watchmen, and Dawn of the Dead (Ben would hurt me if I didn’t mention that one!) and from what we’ve seen in the trailers and clips, looks just as stunning as all his previous work.

We got to speak with Snyder and most of the leading ladies from the movie before they were whisked away into the cinema. You can see all our interviews right here.

While Ben was interviewing, I got a little snap-happy and managed to get photos of pretty much everyone who was out for the premiere including the new Superman himself, Henry Cavill. He didn’t do any interviews but I quite like some of the shots I got of him. To see the more comical ones, you’ll have to watch the video in the interviews post! I also love the images where one of our fellow reporters got them to do some Sucker Punching for real by asking them to don the boxing gloves! Worked really well as you’ll see below.

It must be something to do with the first of April release date that inspires marketing minds to release the first six minutes of films to whip the unconverted into a frenzy.

It happened about a week ago with Duncan Jones’ Source Code and now Warner Bros have let loose this short clip which sets up the main body of the film, telling the nasty tale of how Emily Browning’s character ends up in the asylum which then becomes a brothel and a war zone with dragons and gas masked goons for some reason.

This evening, Ben Mortimer and I were back on the red carpet in Leicester Square in London, England for the UK premiere of Zack Snyder’s new movie, Sucker Punch. We spoke to the director who not only talked about Sucker Punch, but also spoke to us about his new movie, Superman and how that would link to The Justice League. We’ve done a separate post all about that here. We also got to speak with the leading ladies from the movie, well most of them in the form of Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung and finally baddie from the movie, Oscar Issac.

Finally, I don’t know if this is of note but in the interview, Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical fame announces that she’s going to be working on her own clothing line. Is this a scoop?!

Warner Bros. have just sent over these five fantastic new mini featurettes for their new movie, Sucker Punch. Each short video gives us a great look at each of the ladies along with quite a bit of new footage from the movie. The ladies in question include Babydoll (Emily Browning), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket, (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens).

Sucker Punch is directed by the man who brought us 300 and Watchman, Zack Snyder and everything we’ve seen of the film looks fantastic. You can read Micah’s review of it here.

Here’s the plot where Snyder also describes his movie as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”!

Synopsis: Zack Snyder presents a hyper-violent spin on -Alice in Wonderland for his directorial follow-up to Watchmen with this Cruel and Unusual Films production for Warner Bros. The plot details the action-packed fantasy world of a mental patient (Emily Browning), who escapes from her reality to deal with her abusive stepfather.
