It stars Jeremy Renner and it look awesome and we cannot wait to see it!

The movie stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac and is directed by Tony Gilroy.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

Leaping over the animated delights of F Mr.F we look back to The Darjeeling Limited and its companion short Hotel Chevalier for our last live-action film from the director and as usual there’s an excellent cast, with the scattering of Anderson regulars, and the trailer is quirky as it is charming. See.

Here’s a cute synopsis,

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, MOONRISE KINGDOM tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the boy and girl.

Here’s your trailer, pick an Apple to see a version with clarity,

The poster is pretty plain and simple but it’s nice to see the marketing materials for the movie coming out. The only problem that we have is that it isn’t directed by Paul Greengrass and doesn’t star Matt Damon. That said, as I said when the first image came out, maybe this will be a good spin-off in it’s own right and I have faith that it’ll be good! Please let it be good! We are warned to ‘prepare for the unexpected’ so that’s what I plan to do!

Instead we see Jeremy Renner in the lead role as a new character Aaron Cross with director Tony Gilroy at the helm. The movie also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, and Stacy Keach.

Click the poster to make it grow very BIG!

We heard a little while ago that this new movie is going to sit alongside the other Bourne movies when it comes to timeline rather than being a prequel or sequel which may well be a nice change but time will tell. You won’t find Paul Greengrass directing this one and it won’t star Matt Damon but this time Renner will be helmed by Tony Gilroy and co-star alongside Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen and Stacy Keach and I cannot wait. It is the Olympics this year in London, it will also be the place I watch The Bourne Legacy!

Jeremy Renner has been a rising star for a good few years now, and he’s finally deservedly getting the attention he deserves, having earned himself two successive Oscar nominations in the past two years.

With several huge upcoming roles in the form of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Avengers, and The Bourne Legacy, things are definitely looking on the up for the brilliant actor.

The last of these films, The Bourne Legacy, will see Renner taking up the leading role in the franchise that Matt Damon of course led for three films, with director Tony Gilroy taking the helm in place of Paul Greengrass. Alongside will be a fantastic supporting cast, including the likes of Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, and the return of Joan Allen and Albert Finney from the previous films.

Renner has been talking with Empire and teasing some excellent things about the project, surrounded in mystery, including some details about his character, and whether or not he’d be playing the same Jason Bourne character as Damon:

““My character is called Aaron Cross,” Renner told us, “but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it’s a new programme and new characters.”

So is Treadstone still involved? “Yeah, it’s that same deal, it’s just a new set of agents with a different leash. It’s the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you’ll know it’s a Bourne movie.””

More expansive sounds pretty sweet in my books, as I’m sure it will in yours too. Renner is setting himself up as something of a huge action star, with all of his upcoming movies having the potential to see the star at the centre of multiple franchises in the years to come, which I think is nothing but fantastic news.

The Bourne Legacy, the fourth film in the newly rebooting franchise currently in production, will be hitting our cinemas on 17th August next year, months after we’ll have seen Renner starring in The Avengers (on 27th April), Hansel and Gretel (on 2nd March), and Ghost Protocol (on 26th December this year). It’s going to be a brilliant nine months for a brilliant actor, and I can’t wait for it all to unfold.

A young, unknown actor came in, stuttering like the character, read for and won the role beating over two thousand other hopefuls, rejuvenating the film.

This actor kept the project afloat even though it was his motion picture debut; his acting ability earned him an Oscar nomination. That man who saved the film was Edward Norton.

In the late ‘90s, Edward Norton was one of the most exciting young actors to break through and in this time he earned himself two nominations for an Academy award – it could have (and should have) been three. He was the man of the moment, commanding praise for many of his roles from Primal Fear to The People vs. Larry Flynt to American History X and then the cult classic Fight Club. In 2000 he released his first – and so far only – directed film: Keeping the Faith.

In the ‘00s, though, the actor became distant with less successful roles and started disappearing from view. It went from the time where if you saw his name attached to something, you knew it was going to be great; his film choices were sublime but then he became less decisive. Many of his roles of the ‘00s were less complicated and almost shallow compared to his previous choices., two examples are as the villain in The Italian Job remake and Will Graham in Red Dragon. The Score was one of his best film of the early ‘00s in which he starred alongside Robert De Niro and this was where his casual villainy came from; albeit American History X did that but it also showed the paradox of him as well. There are other films around this time which were a lot less successful like Death to Smoochy, Down in the Valley and 25th Hour, directed by Spike Lee which underachieved at the box office and it seemed he was fading into obscurity, doing only indie films and art house cinema.

As time progressed and his name began to lose its credibility and its fame, there seemed to be a rebirth with two successful films. The first was 2006’s The Illusionist which suffered a little when placed in contention with Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige which was similar. The Illusionist grossed less and is perhaps less well remembered but it was a highly successful film earning five times its budget and dragging his name back into the light, being praised by critics for its captivating and mystifying story and its brilliant ensemble. Edward Norton was the centre of the film pulling out a great performance as the calm and manipulative Eisenheim.

His true success was, of course, The Incredible Hulk from which much controversy erupted. This half-sequel, half-reboot of the oft criticised Ang Lee iteration of the 2003 Hulk was more successful than Lee’s but it suffered as a result of being deemed a sequel even though it pretty much ignores its predecessor and Edward Norton played a very different Bruce Banner than Eric Bana had done. Even though this version smashed its way through the box office sales, raking in a lot of money, it was nothing but surface based entertainment of the Michael Bay kind, with the studio trampling all over everything that a had little depth and draining it into a shallow pool of explosions and morphing.

This is where the controversy began. Edward Norton has done a lot in his time; he’s been an actor, a director and he did uncredited writing work for Frida as well as others. Edward Norton is a massive fan of the Hulk and the comic books and he and Louis Leterrier decided that Edward Norton could do a rewrite. In this rewrite – which was primarily dialogue based – Edward Norton gave the character a real back story and a sense of anguish and deprivation because of his condition; he wanted to show us how desperate Bruce Banner really was. This ended up being cut by the producers with the support of the studio. It was supposed to begin with Bruce on the brink of committing suicide but proving that it was impossible for him to as he’s nearly invincible but how can you include that in, what they tried to make, a family film?

Then, when a story was leaked to the press about an argument between Norton and the studio, Norton was portrayed as the villain – much like some of his characters – in something that was just a disagreement from the massacre of the film he helped write. The contract talks broke down and, considering this was a predecessor to the united film and the origin of The Avengers, there needed to be another recast for the Hulk. The actor Mark Ruffalo took over the hulking duties and now, as the success of the franchise reigns supreme and the deadline dawns close with teasers and trailers being issued, Norton was left out and washed away with a stain on his name as a difficult collaborator.

The years after The Incredible Hulk and the flop Pride and Glory are hardly worth mentioning with a small role in The Invention of Lying, a one episode stint in Modern Family and a heavily ignored Leaves of Grass which had no UK release, it’s hard to see how there could be a resurgence. In 2010, Norton reunited with director John Curran and Robert De Niro from The Score in a prison drama where a convicted arsonist tries to manipulate De Niro into believing he has been corrected by using his wife (Milla Jovovich) as a temptress. Though this was a straight-to-DVD import, it is entertaining, thrilling and an interesting take on the human psyche. It’s a character driven drama which gets its success from moral ambiguity and how the correctional officer needs correcting in a sort of ironic power role. Stone was ignored and deemed blasé in America so the UK didn’t get the chance to really see this crime drama/thriller.

This year we have seen nothing from the two-time Oscar nominated actor who has starred in two of the greatest films in recent memory but his current fade after a brief revival as Hulk has left this actor stranded; it has also left fans sulking. Next year he stars in two films which could resurrect this star and bring him in a state of resurgence. Although it’s unlikely that Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom will cement him as a man who can redefine blockbusters and bring great cinema to the many – even in his indie takes via his popularity by cinephiles. It’s quite likely that his role as the villain in The Bourne Legacy sequel, without Bourne but Jeremy Renner as a Bourne-like agent, could bring him back to further glory where he can go back to playing the tortured souls convincingly like he did in Primal Fear, American History X and Fight Club.

He has the ability to play complex characters and can become the villain or the hero. Arguably he is one of the greats who has been ignored in the past decade and discredited but this could decade be the resurgence of Edward Norton? Could it see him truly earn an Academy award? Only time will tell and this could be another Aaron Stampler-esque stutter or the beginning of something big.

Variety is reporting that ‘Ultimatum’ stars, Joan Allen and Albert Finney, will be returning for The Bourne Legacy. Allen you will recall, was CIA operative Pam Landy (seemingly the only agent who wasn’t corrupt in some way or another), while Finney was a slightly sinister doctor involved in the training project Treadstone, which was behind the creation of that team of super assassins from which Jason Bourne was spawned from.

Under the direction of screenwriter Tony Gilroy, they’ll join new hired gun Jeremy Renner, alongside Rachel Weisz and villain Edward Norton.

Variety is reporting that the Fight Club actor may face off against the already-cast Jeremy Renner, who is playing another deadly assassin from the program where Bourne was schooled (surely the film should be called The Treadstone Legacy?) in a film by one of the screenwriters of the previous trilogy, Tony Gilroy (who has penned this one too).

Rachel Weisz is also onboard, which represents a departure from the other entries in the series as they relied on an ensemble of solid character actors as opposed to big stars. Maybe Universal are a little concerned that Renner is not quite a household name as yet, therefore, adding the likes of Norton and Weisz may help build awareness, although the (arguably misleading) title alone will probably take care of that.

Alongside regular players like Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton are all onboard.

Now First Showing has news that none other than Harvey Keitel (where has he been of late?) is another addition here. The film is Anderson’s first period piece (although all his previous films exist in their own lovingly-crafted retro/modern universe) and tells the story of two young lovers who take off from their New England hometown causing friends and family to embark on a search for them.

Further details have been sketchy, but it’s known that Willis play’s the town sheriff, and Murray and McDormand are the young girl’s parents. Edward Norton is a Boy Scout camp leader and The Playlist has unearthed this rather fuzzy image on set (below) of the actor in his full uniform. Murray has also been snapped with what looks like a couple of fans.

That’s it for now folks, but more images will undoubtedly surface in the coming weeks. The first live-action film from Anderson since 2007’s underappreciated, The Darjeeling Limited, this new project certainly holds a fair amount of intrigue, which must partially stem from the decidedly left-field casting of Willis (wonder how he’ll fit in Anderson’s world?) and from seeing what two solid female talents like McDormand and Swinton will bring to the film. Norton is a welcomed presence too, and looks worryingly at home in his camp leader outfit.

It will come as no surprise to fans of Anderson’s and Schwartzman’s that the latter has joined Anderson’s new movie, Moonrise Kingdom.

Schwartzman’s acting debut saw him take the lead in Anderson’s second film, Rushmore, which, like all of Anderson’s films, is something of a cult favourite. The two have since worked together on The Darjeeling Limited, which Schwartman also helped to write, and on 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, and their pairing over the years has been incredibly successful. The two clearly must have a great connection with each other, having started their careers much at the same time together, and there is every reason to expect that Moonrise Kingdom will be another Anderson success.

Schwartzman was last seen on the big screen in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as the last of Ramona Flowers’ boyfriends, he has since been seen on HBO in Bored To Death, playing the lead in a TV series alongside Zach Galifianakis (whose name I always need to double- (okay, triple-)check I’ve spelt right) and Ted Danson.

Moonrise Kingdom has already got an impeccably strong cast lined up for itself, with Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Anderson-favourite Bill Murray attached to star too. The Guardian have a bit more to say on the plot:

“Moonrise Kingdom is a 60′s set tale which revolves around two young lovers who take off from their New England hometown causing friends and family to embark on a search for them. Willis, according to previous reports, will play the town sheriff, who’s also having an affair with the missing girl’s mother (a role pencilled for McDormand), while Norton has his eye on the part of a scout master. Murray will play the girl’s father.”

I am a really big fan of all of Wes Anderson’s films to date, and I truly can’t wait to see how Moonrise Kingdom turns out. It certainly has potential based on that plot, and given that Anderson will be at the helm with such a terrific cast to work with, at the very least I can see it taking a strong position in my Top 10 of 2012.

Anderson has co-written the script with Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola), and filming is to begin in the coming months in Rhode Island. With Owen Wilson’s schedule currently looking relatively light, mostly filled with upcoming animated film Turkeys and David Frankel-directed The Big Year, I am hopeful – expectant, even – that Wilson will be confirmed for Moonrise Kingdom before long. Having starred in all six of Anderson’s feature films to date, it just wouldn’t seem right without him.

John Curran’s latest film is thrust onto DVD next week and benefits from some fine performances from its main cast to lift it from the rather ordinary premise we find ourselves with.

Stone has Robert De Niro’s parole officer nearing a welcome retirement when convicted arsonist “Stone” Creeson sits down opposite him seeking, but not expecting, parole. Their initial conversation is a game of coarse oneupmanship and prejudicial sparring with no resolution, but the tone is set for these two men and the two very different worlds they inhabit to collide.

Enter Stone’s wife, played Milla Jovovich, who will stop at nothing to secure his release on parole. As she preys on De Niro’s character she is revealed as the rotten heart of this film, turning the screws and switching allegiances with a strange agenda all of her own.

When you describe the film like that it looks rubbish, but the truth is that the performances, particularly from Jovovich, help Curran’s film achieve more than its mediocre premise suggests.

Jovovich’s act is seductive and terrifyingly random, and she is better in this than I’ve seen her in a long time. Breaking against the tough exterior of De Niro’s weathered career man she drives the film along and I was compelled to see where her actions would take us.

Through crude manipulation and one cruel lesson in sexual politics later and the tower comes crumbling down. De Niro’s stoic, righteous white-collar existence is taken apart piece by piece by people we were led to believe would have trouble pulling on a pair of socks. While jealousy and frustration play their part in his downfall it is far more interesting to see how the film reveals that De Niro’s parole officer was seemingly always on this path, and how easily he falls, and how fragile his deep rooted convictions truly are.

Norton is compelling as always, though his thick accent and broad brushstrokes are troubling at the first instance but eventually settle down and the small details he peppers his characters with become evident and his errant, childish nature falls away, revealing a psychosexual bully as cunning as De Niro’s character is distrustful. It’s a powerful match and Curran’s film is enjoyable, if unoriginal.

Edward Norton does the identical twin routine in Tim Blake Nelson’s comedy about a pair of brothers whose divergent lives reconnect when news of the death of one draws the other back home.

One brother is a pot growing entrepreneur with a crippling lack of smarts and a talent for trouble while the other brother is an Ivy League professor on the verge of a huge promotion and keen to maintain the distance he has travelled from his humble beginnings.

When the learned sibling realises that reports of his brother’s death are not only greatly exaggerated, but are part of a plot to take down a domineering local crime boss, the Slackerdemic double act get to work at rebuilding bridges and sorting their lives out. Which is nowhere near as trite as it sounds. It’s a keenly felt, visually interesting and surprisingly nuanced comedy.

Edward Norton takes on the roles of both brothers while aplomb, though his pot grower from the sticks is at first a little too cornball, but as the film progresses we find both to be layered performances, capable of engaging our emotions and elevating the film. Norton has a habit of allowing the other characters to develop around him, almost fading to the background but this is why he is so magnetic a screen presence.

It’s a fairly standard premise elevated by a great supporting cast with Susan Sarandon’s role as the twins’ mother is soaked in pathos and gin and Richard Dreyfuss’s duplicitous drug baron Pug Rothbaum (a Coenesque name if ever there was one) is a coarse and chilling presence. It’s always great to see Melanie Lynskey on screen and Blake Nelson is virtually unrecognisable in his supporting role and you get the feeling that this film was made as a passion project rather than an attempt to attract a wide audience. Its cast is its greatest asset and its witty script will surprise those expecting a pothead crime caper – it is far deeper, and far more enjoyable than that.

Leaves of Grass is out now on DVD and VOD.

****~ (4/5)

With the sights and sounds of the Superbowl trailer bonanza still ringing in our eyes and ears there’s never been a better time to throw out this rumour which pertains to the Marvelous mashup coming our way on the 4th of May next year in the form of The Avengers.

While most of the cast for the film is already known, indeed drawing from the other films in the Marvelverse allows for one of the most impressive ensemble casts in terms of box office clout, there’s a new name daubed on the walls of the rumour mill today – that of Chuck actress Yvonne Strahovski.

Comic Book Movie have found this snippet online and boldly asserted that the actress is lining herself up for the Joss Whedon directed Avengers movie as Ms. Marvel – here are the words,

Though it’s not often that we get the scoop on anything here, I’ve just received information from a protected source inside Marvel that points to Yvonne Strahovski being cast in the upcoming Avengers movie as Ms. Marvel.

Could it be true?

I, for one, have long hoped to see Yvonne crop up in a comic book movie. She’s got the action chops to easily pull it off and it was really just a matter of time before the right character came along.

Here’s a handy link to all things Ms. Marvel and while we wait for official confirmation, or the more likely long drawn-out silence broken only with the twitter spray of nay-sayers and supporters, here’s how you should be taking this news,

Stone stars Edward Norton, Milla Jovovich and Robert De Niro and is directed by John Curran who previously worked with Norton on The Painted Veil.

Synopsis: Norton takes on the role of a ruthless convict who is desperately trying to gain parole. A convicted arsonist, he enlists the help of his beautiful wife, carried out by Jovovich, to manipulate his correction officer, portrayed by De Niro, and entrap the lawman in a series of deadly psychological games.

The US can expect to see the movie 8th October. I’ve not found a release date for it in the UK as yet.

FYI, Santaj means ‘Blackmail’. What would I do without Google Translator?!

The World, Edgar Wright has nevertheless spilled an interesting nugget of information regarding his take on the upcoming Ant-Man film.

Talking to Vanity Fair, Wright revealed that he will be approaching the material as “essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.”

Accepting the challenges he faces, and the difficulties associated with ‘shrinking man’ material, the director added, “I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent.” It’s certainly nice to know that we’re not looking at Honey I Shrunk The Superhero.

While this is indeed an exciting possibility, there are still a few weeks until Wright will be free from his Pilgrim duties and another draft of the script still has to be written. As such, it might be a little premature to rule out other possibilities. Taking into account what happened to Edward Norton, Marvel still have an awfully long time to change their choice of director.
