The highly anticipated and long-awaited conclusion to The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, also known as the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, looks to be getting closer to being realized.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost both updated on the project last year, first in June and then last month, with Frost’s December update suggesting that shooting could take place this year, and that he’s read a draft of the film already.

Edgar Wright, director of the film two films (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), tweeted a great picture of himself and Pegg, entitled ‘Hard at work…’, contemplating the impending end of the world.

Plot details, as expected, are being kept under wraps, but I think it’s a safe bet to assume that when it does come out – and its release is rumoured to be in 2014 – it will be almost beyond description in its awesomeness. And I’m sure fans of the first two films, as well as all of Pegg, Frost, and Wright’s other work, would agree.

The new picture is obviously just a bit of fun, but hopefully there’s not more to it than that. The blank slate in the image is naturally somewhat different to Frost talking about a finished first draft. Keep your fingers crossed that either a) the blankness is just a joke, and/or b) the drawing board is literally that – to start storyboarding. Because that would be so good if things are progressing nicely in that direction already. More as we get it. For now, enjoy a bit of Wright and Pegg comedy, clearly hard at work.

When done well, zombies entertain us cinemagoers and TV viewers alike to no end, and sometimes for very different reasons. In Shaun of the Dead, we got a brilliant horror-comedy from the likes of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright, that was by far the best film of its kind I’ve ever seen, before or since. And more recently, the TV adaptation of The Walking Dead has brought us zombies of a very different and entirely more intense nature. Both kinds, it goes without saying, are excellent.

Now, courtesy of Flickr user Yatkuu, via Collider, we’ve been treated to a terrific re-imagining of what Shaun of the Dead and The Walking Dead might look like if they were turned into Lego toys. And the images are really very impressive.

If you’re yet to see either Shaun of the Dead or The Walking Dead, needless to say, you should definitely make sure you play catch-up as soon as humanly possible. Shaun of the Dead kicked off the start of Pegg, Wright, and Frost’s The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, followed-up by Hot Fuzz in 2007, and with a bit of luck, the conclusion with the tentatively-titled The World’s End might shoot sometime next year.

The Walking Dead, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, was developed for TV by none other than Frank Darabont, and has been getting terrific success, and a slew of award nominations, ever since it premiered at the end of last year. The images of The Walking Dead are from the original comic, rather than the TV show, but are still highly enjoyable if you’ve only seen the show like me.

As far back as 2008 we were hearing that the final film in The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (also called the Blood and Ice-Cream trilogy) was moving forward.

Following on from the success of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz the team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright hinted that the third film, which has had the title of The World’s End hanging around for years, was at one stage gravitating towards a doomsday/sci-fi movie.

If the Red of Shaun of the Dead was the buckets of blood and the Blue of Hot Fuzz was the thin line of the police force then perhaps at one stage the Mint-green (the final flavour in the Cornetto trilogy) was pointing towards Little Green Men. However with Pegg and Frost’s recent sojourn in Nevada with a crude little alien named Paul it may mean that The World’s End we get to see is something a little different.

If we’re lucky then we may get to find out more about the film as early as next year.

Ed Douglas over at Coming Soon spoke to Frost during the junket for Jackson and Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, and he offered the first update for a long time on the status of the much-anticipated third film,

There is a draft out there, which I’ve read, and it’s great, and I think our plan is to crack on and shoot next year. Touch wood. They move and they change but we definitely want to get on with it.

Pegg and Frost’s previous film, Paul, was a lot of fun and like Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim was held up to the previous films of those involved, creating the false impression that they were lesser works in some ways. What is interesting, particularly with the team’s solo projects (Frost’s turn as the oafish one man apocalypse John Self in the BBC’s adaptation of Martin Amis’s Money is a fine example here), is how they are maturing as actors, writers and, in Wright’s case, as a director.

With another Star Trek looming and Wright’s long-awaited Ant-Man movie still lined up there’s no telling when we might sample the minty-green goodness of the final film in the trilogy, but there’s a lot of love for the team and their films so we’re all ears until we hear something more. Until then, everyone out there – touch some wood ok?

Essentially a one-joke set-up stretched over 93 long minutes, aside from a couple of humorous moments (and a very funny 3D gag before the film starts) Kill Keith falls flat as both a parody and a stand-alone comedy.

A popular breakfast TV show called The Crack of Dawn (think cheap Daybreak knockoff with even less charm) is fronted by hosts Cliff and Dawn (yep, she’s been given this name purely to be made the butt of a hopelessly unfunny joke) whose distain for each other is clear through their strained daily relationship on the sofa. Mirroring his stint on the Channel 4’s nineties morning show, The Big Breakfast, legendary UK TV fixture, Keith ‘Cheggers’ Chegwin is also employed by the show as their roving reporter for a segment called ‘Cheggers Knocks You Up’ (the dreadful double entendres keep coming).

Cheggers, as it turns out, is in line as one of the possible replacements for the coveted sofa gig after Cliff announces his departure. The only problem is his main competitors for the role (Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale and Russell Grant) are being dispatched one after another in various gruesome, torture porn-type scenarios. Will the murderous figure behind it all, dubbed The Breakfast Cereal Killer (REALLY?!?) be unmasked before he strikes again (no prizes for guessing who this turns out to be) and will gawky breakfast show production assistant and general studio whipping boy, Danny be able to save his beloved Dawn from meeting the same fate as her potential co-hosts?

With a tagline which reads ‘SAW meets RICHARD & JUDY’ it’s pretty clear that there was never the goal to create some kind of post-modern, meta comedy classic here, but nevertheless, Kill Keith is a lazy, ill-conceived affair which has nowhere to go once the flimsy premise has been established. The biggest shame is the creators have failed to coax anything resembling a performance from former primetime TV fixture-turned personal demon tabloid fodder, Chegwin. What could have been an interesting glimpse into the mind of a jaded D-lister driven to the brink (with the broad humour intact) instead is a gimmicky and frustratingly underdeveloped role for the TV star, resulting in a one-note performance. For the majority of his appearance on screen (particularly after the reveal) Chegwin spends most of the time, hangdog-like, gurning in the shadows. The fact that his story and the other celebs exist merely as ciphers to the main, joyless plot which follows the budding relationship between Danny and Dawn, illustrates how little the makers were interested in exploring that side.

It’s clear the director has gorged himself on episodes of Spaced, and he uses that style of visual storytelling to frame the film. Manic whip-pans, brief fantasy interludes and cartoonish frame wipes (and even the dreaded, hideously overused record scratch sound effect) may have worked on TV a decade or so back, but here they look incredibly tired and amateurish. He clearly lacks the skills of someone like Edgar Wright, who has shown how to successfully adapt and craft some of those techniques for that bigger, cinematic canvas.

The intriguing presence of Chegwin (decked out in Kill Bill garb) on the promotional material will undoubtedly encourage some to seek out the film once it arrives on DVD, and while it occasionally strives to provide some amusing send-ups of TV culture (it takes enjoyable aim at the ridiculously simplistic phone-in quiz format), a small screen audience will probably feel short-changed too with this missed opportunity to humorously subvert the personas (particularly Chegwin’s) of these TV titans of yesteryear.

Perhaps in the interests of trying to build up a bit more momentum for the US release, we have had the pleasure of Joe Cornish’s feature debut, Attack the Block, here in the good old UK for a little while now. Further anticipation was fanned by a series of special advance screenings in the US at select cinemas and the film seems to have gone down generally very well and so it should have. You can refresh your memory regarding all we have said about it by clickifying here.

For a debut directorial effort, featuring an inexperienced cast and operating on a budget that would just about cover the cost of a large poster for Transformers 3, it is an exceptionally cinematic and accomplished film and it is to be sincerely hoped that it fares well on that side of the pond.

Those lovely folks at Trailer Addict have got themselves a red band trailer for this tale of inner city tower blocks, disenfranchised youth and razor-toothed aliens and you can enjoy it below, as long as you are old enough. Oh and by the way, NSFW. Allow it.

Ain’t It Cool News had an interview with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and in it, the subject of their final film in the Blood and Ice Cream / Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, provisionally titled The World’s End, came up.

According to Pegg, he and Wright will be starting work on writing the final film very soon, and he hopes to get a first draft done before filming starts on the sequel to 2009’s Star Trek.

The collaboration of Pegg, Frost, and Wright has given British film and TV some of its best and funniest work in recent years, and fans will  be pleased to know that work is set to start soon on the final film in the trilogy, following up 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and 2007’s Hot Fuzz.

In the interview, Pegg said of the expectation that will inherently be attached to the project:

“I hope we sort of confound it in a way. I wouldn’t want to become predictable or be the guys who do that. The next thing that we do will hopefully be… you know, in writing our new thing, Edgar and me have been very determined – that we’re going to start in earnest very, very soon – to not just do the same thing again, to do something very different. Not to the point of alienating people who want something, but just give people something new and something different. You can’t just stay where you are forever. You have to mutate to survive, and I think we’re going to make sure that we do that. I’d hate to become stale and predictable. People are already making films that are kind of like the sort of thing we might do. I want to stay a little bit ahead of the curve at least.”

When asked exactly how soon he hopes to begin writing, he responded,

“We already started the conception process, so it’s just a question of when we can get together. I’m just about to start shooting a movie here in the UK, so maybe between that and Star Trek we might get a chance to bang out a first draft if we’re lucky.”

The three of them have worked together since 1999 when they made the immensely entertaining TV show Spaced, which Pegg co-wrote with Jessica Hynes (who was also in Shaun of the Dead), and Wright directed.

Wright most recently directed last year’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which somewhat surprisingly didn’t do very well at the box office, despite being very popular among critics and fans alike. He’s since worked as a co-writer on the upcoming The Adventures of Tin Tin: Secret of the Unicorn, which Pegg and Frost both star in.

We could be a year or two from getting to see their final film in the trilogy, but we all know that it will be well worth the wait, especially with Pegg and Wright’s determination to re-invent the wheel on their last outing. You just know it’s going to be something special.

HeyUGuys were at the Jameson Empire Awards last Sunday and during the course of the evening we were tweeting from the red carpet, live blogging the awards, and interviewing the winners and presenters as soon as they got off stage.

We also managed to carry out quite a few interviews with guests on their way into the awards. This time round we’ve got Gareth Edwards, the man responsible for the phenomenal Monsters, and who will shortly be bringing Godzilla back to the big screen.

Just as Gareth arrived in front of me, we were surrounded by the cast of The Inbetweeners to my right, and Tom Hiddleston on my left, causing everyone around us to surge forward, and forcing Gareth and I to move much closer together than is entirely comfortable for, well anybody to be honest.

In spite of the slightly odd interview conditions, we spoke about Monsters, and how he feels about the focus of much of the praise being on the production values rather than the story, how close Godzilla is to filming, and whether this concept art from last year’s San Diego Comic Con had anything to do with his movie.

While we were on the red carpet for the Jameson Empire Awards, we had a chance to talk to Son of Rambow and Narnia star, Will Poulter, who seemed to be competing with Gareth Edwards and Tom Felton for the title of nicest man in the British film industry.

During the conversation, he spoke briefly about his love for The King’s Speech, before talking about his next film, Wild Bill, which is directed by Dexter Fletcher. After hearing how excited Will was for the film, we had to stop Dexter on his way in, and get him to give us some more details. To find out more about it, check out the video below.

The Empire Awards turned sweet sixteen last night and the Grosvenor House Hotel was the venue once again to celebrate, drink, clap your palms numb and drink some more in a toast to the best in film.

Jameson were on hand again to sponsor and thus sobriety quickly beat a hasty retreat and the awards were afoot. Returning host Dara O’Briain leapt on stage and led us through the awards, not squandering the chance to take the assembled guests down a peg or two on the way.

Two films which unjustly missed their mark at the box office were among the winners tonight;  Scott Pilgrim and Kick-Ass were popular choices for Edgar Wright’s Best Director win and the ebullient Jane Goldman was both irrepressibly excited and humble when she took to the stage to collect her Kick-Ass’s Best British Film gong.

Empire’s readers are difficult to pin down and herd into a category, so you’re never quite sure which way the votes will go, but Wright is a firm favourite with the readership, and his Empire Inspiration Award is testament to this. He singled out the Done in 60 Seconds competition as being akin to what he was doing when Empire’s first issue was published and how fans are now making their own cuts of his work, or making Scott Pilgrim fan films and this was a case of the inspiration coming full circle. He was a humble inspirer of people, and if nothing else it made me want to watch Scott Pilgrim all over again.

Eli Roth took home the Best Horror award for The Last Exorcism and promised to continue to make disturbing films which is a far better promise than it is a threat, maybe he’s the right guy for the marooned Pride & Prejudice & Zombies film, I think I’d like to see his take on Austen.  I enjoyed the other films nominated in that category but it was fitting to see the only film which wasn’t a remake or a sequel win the day. While I had problems with some of the choices made for The Last Exorcism it did succeed in chilling bones and laying on a very creepy vibe throughout, clearly the readers of Empire thought so too.

The absent Chloe Moretz won Best Newcomer and while everyone loves a purple wigged ten year old assassin I found her role as the haunted, lonesome Abby in Matt Reeves’ Let Me In to be something special and hopes could not be higher for her future.

It was almost crushingly self evident that Colin Firth would be clutching another award come the evening’s end, but his Best Actor speech was as dry and self effacing as ever, and you got the impression there was genuine love for the man. Noomi Rapace paid tribute to her inspiration when collecting her Best Actress award for Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which itself collected the award for Best Thriller) in singling out Gary Oldman, as did the Empire awards moments later as the Empire Icon spotlight was on him.

The man Firth handed over the award after a montage of Oldman’s work played out including what I’m sure was the first glimpse of Oldman in  Tomas Alfredson’s new version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and in accepting the award Oldman praised the directors who cast him in what is an eclectic and impressive body of work. He’s a class act and his directorial debut Nil By Mouth is well worth seeking out if you’ve not already done so, it’s uncompromising and brutally harsh but all the more effective because of it. Many people I know haven’t heard of it so get on to Lovefilm or wherever right now.

The other big winners included Harry Potter and Inception, which divided critics and certainly didn’t impress the British and American Academies but did well with the voting masses, and it was genuinely pleasing to see Chris Morris’s Four Lions win Best Comedy.

Last year I was on the red carpet and endured the press room scrum, this year I was fortunate to be on the table with sponsors Citroen, who were presenting the Best Actress award and it’s a far more relaxed and fun affair than the BAFTAs as a recent and pertinent example. And in a show of blogger solidarity I think – and bear in mind that I was four or five whiskey sours down at this point – that I gave Charlie from Ultra Culture a bottle opener at a crucial point in the evening, perhaps moments before he did a guest spot on Ben’s live blog of the awards.

All in all a great night, hangovers assured and the future of British film looking a little bleary eyed this morning, but bright nonetheless.

This evening, the Grosvenor House Hotel played host to the 2011 Empire / Jameson Awards ceremony. These awards are always great as they’re voted for by the readers of the biggest Movie Magazine in the world (that would be Empire) and you never quite know who may turn up to the awards and today we were pleasantly surprised with the turnout.

While Jon was at the awards themselves and Ben and Kelly were on the red carpet and them blogging live and chatting with the winners of each award, I was back at HeyUGuys HQ breaking news like the fact that Amy Adams is going to be Lois Lane and collating all the info from the awards themselves.

In that vein, here are the official images from tonight’s awards ceremony which I’ve placed in this rather handy gallery below. As you’ll see, the turnout was rather impressive and included Tom Felton, Keira Knightley, Lily Cole, Colin Firth, Talulah Riley, Edgar Wright, Mark Strong and Gary Oldman to name but a phew.

Joe Cornish’s feature debut as writer/director is Attack the Block, which pits a group of teenage gang members up against an invading alien force, and it’s looking pretty great.

The first few clips played on BBC One’s Film2011 last night and teased us to the brink of expectancy, and now there’s a full blown trailer to get you in the mood.

The film stars Nick Frost, Jodie Whitaker and Luke Treadaway and if you’re a fan then it’s worth keeping an eye on the film’s Facebook page, and you can go to the main site to register for updates or if you Twit then  follow the film here.

Though we weren’t one of the select few to be shown the film this week there’s plenty of embargo breaking goodness for the film, and from what we’ve seen so far, and what we’ve (unofficially) heard the film is (unofficially) great.

Synopsis: Attack the Block¹ is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It¹s inner city versus outer space.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when she¹s robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. She¹s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors fall.Confident of victory against such feeble invaders, the gang grab weapons, mount bikes and mopeds, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are bigger. Much bigger. Savage, shadowy and bestial, they are hunting their fallen comrade and nothing will stand in their way. The estate is about to become a battleground. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her, and the block¹s, only hope.

In anticipation of the trailer for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, which is supposed to hit later today, we wanted to put up the two clips which appeared along with the film’s director on the BBC’s Film 2011 programme last night.

The film stars Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker and Luke Treadaway and sets its scene in a South London council estate where a gang fend off an alien invasion. Early word suggests the film lives up to the hype and they’ll be much to enjoy when the film arrives on the 13th of May.

After the hilarious and hugely well-regarded one-two of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright tried his hand at a fully-fledged Hollywood production with Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Although the film was very well received by critics and much loved by most who went to see it, it met with less than stellar commercial success, garnering a little over half of its estimated budget at the US box office.

Notwithstanding that, Wright is returning to his work on the screenplay for Ant-Man, a lesser profile Marvel property, which he has apparently been looking at since 2006. Wright is tentatively linked to scripting and directing duties on the film, but progress is glacial to say the least. Wright is working with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Adventures of Tintin) on the script and now that he has finished his Scott Pilgrim promotional duties around the globe, he is said to be looking at it more intently than he had been of late.

Aside from trying to find time for scripting the film, Wright and Cornish have to try to work out how to write a story about a superhero who shrinks to the size of an ant to solve crimes. Although giving the script a strongly humourous bent seems like a given, tonally it could prove to be a tough nut to crack. Should it play primarily for younger audiences, or be arch and knowing and bring a smile to the faces of older viewers. It is understandable that it is taking Wright a bit of time to progress this one.

In the meantime, Wright is still chewing over ideas for a third big screen collaboration with Simon Pegg, presumably to complete their Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Wright says that they have an idea and need to sit down and write something, but with Pegg travelling the world on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and due to follow that with Star Trek 2, perhaps Wright should concentrate on Ant-Man for the time being.

Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) took to Twitter yesterday evening to reveal the exciting news that British dance-poppers Basement Jaxx are composing the score for Attack the Block, Joe Cornish’s sci-fi invasion film.

“Heard some of Basement Jaxx’s score for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block yesterday [...] Still humming it today.”

Attack the Block is Cornish’s directorial debut, centering on a teen gang in South London defending their block from an alien invasion.

Nick Frost, Luke Treadaway, Jodie Whittaker, Joey Ansah, Adam Leese and Chris Wilson lead the cast.

Attack the Block will be released through Optimum Releasing UK on April 8.

Back in November, Jon posted the new images that were debuted in Empire Magazine and now the studio has released them digitally and in high resolution and thanks to FilmoFilia for the heads up.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is directed by Steven Spielberg and Produced by Peter Jackson with a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Cary Elwes, Andy Serkis, Toby Jones, Nick Frost to name but a few with Jamie Bell as the voice of Tintin.

We can expect this one to hit UK cinemas in nearly a year on 26th October 2011.

In a sign of the times, Twitter has released a list of this year’s top ten trending subjects (Thanks to /Film for the heads up). There’s some interesting reveals here, alongside more predictable topics (Justin Bieber’s tragic  number one position in the People section speaks volumes about the largest demographic to use the site).

The Film section almost mirrors a top ten box office list of the year, with one exception. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (No. 3) only managed to gross a little over its estimated $60 million budget at the domestic box office ($31,494,270).

Maybe massive exposure on Twitter isn’t enough to guarantee box office success as yet, but the grassroots approach Pilgrim’s director Edgar Wright adopted to spread the word and keep his fervent fanbase in the loop, could only have been achieved by social networking of this kind.

One thing can be certain from the Film list though. The Last Airbender’s inclusion in 6th place isn’t due to cinemagoers raving about their experience after seeing the film.
