Russell Crowe will be playing the male co-lead of Jean Valjean, with Hugh Jackman joining him as Inspector Javert, and Anne Hathaway will be bringing to life the female lead, Fantine.

When Hooper announced last month that he wouldn’t be using 3D for the film, he also said that we should expect to soon hear casting news about the roles of Éponine and Cosette, and it looks as though we could well be getting confirmation soon now.

Twitch are reporting, via The Playlist, that Taylor Swift and Amanda Seyfried have been offered the roles of Éponine and Cosette, respectively, after Hooper’s search in the past few months, with Swift beating the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Lea Michele for the role.

It was also announced last month that the cast of the film is expected to sing live on set, in front of the cameras, rather than pre-recording their vocals in a studio, which sounds like such a novel approach to me. Naturally, this means that the actors and actresses will need to be able to sing themselves, rather than use voice doubles. Swift of course has a background in music, but I hadn’t realised that Seyfried has been trained in opera singing herself, so both should come in handy for the hopeful pair.

The rest of the casting so far announced includes Sacha Baron Cohen and Eddie Redmayne, and the production is set to begin this spring. This could potentially cause a scheduling conflict with Swift, who has a tour lined up forAustraliaandNew Zealand, but hopefully this is something they can work around.

Les Misérables is set to make its US debut on 7th December this year, perfectly lining it up for the Oscars in 2013. With a bit of luck, we’ll be getting it here in theUK at the same time to enjoy it before the end of the year too. I can’t wait. More news as we get it.

Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman will be taking the roles of the male co-leads Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert respectively, and Anne Hathaway will be gracing the big screen adaptation in the role of Fantine, the female lead. And joining them will be Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen, who’s really been mixing up his career in the past few years.

We heard back at the start of the month that Hooper had decided against using 3D for the big screen production of the world-renowned novel by Victor Hugo, which of course spawned the musical that has become world-famous in itself.

We now have the very interesting news, courtesy of The Sun via Collider, that the film’s cast will be doing something beyond what is ordinarily asked of film musicals’ casts. Rather than recording their vocals in a studio, and miming the words in front of the cameras, they will instead have their vocals recorded live before the cameras, which sounds like it should definitely bring a sense of immediacy, not to mention authenticity, to the film.

“Unlike most film musicals, the cast will record their vocals live on camera rather than go into a studio first then mime on film to the pre-recorded vocal… First they have to learn the complex songs, then they’ll have to get it right on set in front of the other stars and crew.”

Hooper clearly isn’t making things easy on himself or the cast, but it sounds like a thoroughly interesting path to take with the film, and I’m loving everything that we’ve heard about the project so far. I’ve never seen a musical that’s been made like this, and can’t wait to see how it translates on screen.

Les Misérables will be released in the USon 7th December next year, and though theUK is yet to have a release date announced, I’d imagine that we’ll be getting it around the same time too. The date really does set it up to be an Oscar contender in the following year’s awards, and it’s not too far a stretch to imagine that Hooper’s production might well see a similar success to his last film.

Just to add a little context/random information, the last weekend of November and the first two weekends of December this year saw Hugo, The Muppets, The Artist, A Dangerous Method, My Week With Marilyn, Shame, Young Adult, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy all released in the States, and pretty much all of them are being talked about as potential Oscar candidates for the Academy Awards next February. So with a little bit of luck, we’ll be saying the same thing about Les Misérables by this time next year. I can’t wait.

In the past year, director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) has seen himself become almost overnight a huge success, with The King’s Speech topping many critics’ and individuals’ Films of the Year lists last year, along with earning himself the Best Director award at the Oscars earlier this year.

His next project, a film adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables, is lining up to be pretty damn brilliant, with a cast that currently includes Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, and rumours of Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter to boot.

Talking to the BBC, Hooper has now put to bed the possibility of the project being released in 3D, saying,

“I can definitely announce it’s good old-fashioned 2D.”

He confirmed that he had been doing some testing with shooting it in 3D, but ultimately decided against it, which I think is a good move for him. Justifying the decision, he said that he wanted to make a film that everyone could connect with:

“One of the things I’m most proud of with The King’s Speech is how it managed to do that, whether you’re eight or 80 years old.

“So I slightly worry with 3D that some people will physically struggle with it. If you have a certain type of eyesight it can be more demanding than watching a normal movie.

“With a two-and-a-half hour film, I didn’t want to make something that anyone might think ‘That’s not for me, because I don’t like the medium’.

“I wanted to make a film that would touch everyone. I believe the story is so strong, 3D is not essential.”

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the 3D medium, in part because the 3D glasses on top of my regular glasses just doesn’t feel comfortable and often ends up giving me a bit of a headache, so I can definitely appreciate Hooper’s reasoning here. Granted, I definitely would’ve still gone to see the film however it was released, but I’m glad that he’ll be sticking to 2D, and it’s that much better for ticket prices on our end.

Hooper also added that we should be getting some more casting news soon for the roles of Cosette and Éponine, both of which I believe are child roles, and hopefully we’ll get confirmation of Rush and Bonham Carter’s involvement with those announcements too.

“I’ve never done a film where big star actors are as obsessed with being in it as this!”

The cast is already fantastic, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out when it arrives on the big screen next year. Shooting is scheduled to begin in March, with a release date currently set for December of next year, perfectly lining it up for consideration for the Oscars at the start of 2013. As always, more news as we get it.

It may be a relatively new category, first awarded back in 2006, but its youth isn’t at all a bad thing, and it gives us a chance to celebrate some of the best emerging talent in the film industry.

In the past six years, we’ve seen James McAvoy, Eva Green, Shia LaBeouf, Noel Clarke, Kristen Stewart, and Tom Hardy all take the award, and Orange have now announced the eight names on this year’s longlist for the award:

Adam Deacon (Anuvahood), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Felicity Jones (Chalet Girl), Tom Hiddleston (The Deep Blue Sea), Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Jessica Chastain (The Debt), and Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn).

“The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award recognises the best up-and-coming actors and actresses in film. This is your chance to vote for the actor or actress you believe are set for great things.”

There are expectedly some names that stick out above the rest, but all seem like solid choices (though I admit I’m not too familiar with Deacon or Redmayne’s work), as chosen by this year’s judging panel, which includes Simon Pegg, Sienna Miller, David Yates, Pippa Harris (producer and Deputy Chairman of BAFTA Film Committee), and a number of other people working in the industry and in film journalism.

Each year, the longlist gets shortened to five names, with last year seeing Tom Hardy up against Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson, and Emma Stone. Naturally, I found it immensely difficult trying to decide who I wanted to win (my vote was finally torn between Hardy and Stone), and I can imagine the same thing happening again this year with such excellent names topping the list.

The final list of five names will be announced on 11th January next year, when a further round of voting will then commence to find the year’s Rising Star. You can head over to Orange now and cast your vote for who you think is most deserving. Personally, I think I’m falling behind Felicity Jones this year. If you have any favourites this year, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

Orange have put together a little promo video to give you a recap of the actors’ and actresses’ work from the past year, so here’s a little helping hand if you’re struggling to decide.

My Week With Marilyn, the name of said memoir and debut feature-film director Simon Curtis’ new film, is one such example that much like the Marilyn Monroe it portrays, is an instant heart warmer that you can’t help but be charmed by.

In the summer of 1956, Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe (played by Michelle Williams) arrived on British soil to produce and star in The Prince and the Showgirl, co-starring and directed by acting legend and British acting royalty Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). On that same shoot was then-23-year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), an Oxford graduate from a well-established family who was desperate to make it as a filmmaker, and as third assistant director on the film, found himself in the most intimate situation with the screen siren, who confided in him during one magical week.

Curtis’ quintessentially British affair captures the imagination from the word go as it’s not just the promise of someone bringing Marilyn to life, but also the stuff of dreams: We have all thought at one point, what if you found yourself in the company of your idol for one week and got to know them like no other? His film, while brazenly pining for the romance of the ‘good old days’, is also stylish, quirky and natty, like the glamorous yesteryear Pinewood productions it strives to recreate, and has an enthusiastic, cheeky and addictive energy, as well as a truly wonderful cast to deliver this.

Williams is sure to get her second Oscar nomination for her Marilyn portrayal. She summons just the right countenance, pose and effervescence of the screen idol, while giving a respectable and credible insight into the darker recesses of her tortured mind and soul. This childlike innocence and fragility is beautifully captured when Marilyn is in awe of a dolls house in one scene, that we fall that little bit more for her and her crushing vulnerability at the hands of fame. That said the Jekyll and Hyde emotions suggest a far less naïve side at the end, very much a woman in control of her own destiny and brand, and Williams subtly and expertly relays this, but still retains Marilyn’s treasured enigma to marvel at. Curtis fuels the love affair with some highly impressive renditions from multi-talented Williams who actually performs Marilyn’s songs, “When Love Goes Wrong/Heat Wave” and “That Old Black Magic”.

Another standout performance comes from Branagh as the acidic-tongued theatrical stalwart Olivier, brilliantly allowing the sarcasm at the tardy Hollywood star’s irresponsibility and drama to drip off the tongue while absolutely nailing Olivier’s clipped and polished pronunciation with thrilling results. Like a scolding mentor, Olivier is the unwilling villain of the piece, who also reveals an intriguing vulnerability at becoming yesterday’s news. It is such insecurities we can all relate to, not just actors but anyone at the height of their career.

Redmayne gives a career-defining performance as Colin, a mixture of cocky youthful arrogance and personable honesty, as much a pawn as Marilyn in the film game – hence she adopts him as her temporary friend. Redmayne commendably plays the doting and mesmerised, lovesick aide who falls for the Marilyn magic, and his moments opposite Williams are truly tender and unique as unconventional ‘love affairs’ go.

There are also some divine supporting moments to enjoy from Judi Dench as actress Dame Sybil Thorndike, the dry-witted and patient surrogate mother to the fragile on-set Marilyn; a virtually unrecognisable Zoë Wanamaker as Marilyn’s drab and domineering Method coach and shoulder-to-cry-on Paula Strasberg; and Dominic Cooper as Milton Greene, Marilyn’s estranged co-producer who fell for the Marilyn charms years earlier and has to deal with his jealousy at Colin’s closeness with the star. Julia Ormond is captivating as screen legend and Olivier’s wife, Vivien Leigh, who is also tackling the ‘has-been’ demons that come with age. Emma Watson briefly appears as costume hand and Colin’s fling, Emma, an apt transition into the adult acting arena for the Harry Potter star. There is a real sense from all involved that this was a labour of love to do the utmost justice to the memoir and provide a bigger picture of the highs and lows of that time, as well as a lot of fun in parts.

As a first feature, Curtis has made a significant mark and shown a real gift for character narration, delivering a powerhouse of individual and ensemble acting prowess that encapsulates this glamorous era of filmmaking history, even if it is guilty of being a little pious at times.

****~ (4/5)

I was lucky enough to see a very early screening of it to interview Eddie Redmayne (which will go live either today or tomorrow) who plays Colin Clark in the movie. It’s been such a long time now and I’ve been longing for my friends to be able to go and see it because I really enjoyed it.

Today we have this brand new exclusive image courtesy of The Weinstein Company for the movie which shows two of the leads, Eddie Redmayne (Colin Clark) and Michelle Williams (Marilyn Monroe) in bed together. My Week with Marilyn is directed by Simon Curtis and also stars Toby Jones, Emma Watson, Dominic Cooper, Kenneth Branagh, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench, Dougray Scott, Zoë Wanamaker and Derek Jacobi.

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’. The film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Aurthur Miller (Dougray Scott). Nearly 40 years on, his diary account The Prince, the Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as My Week with Marilyn – this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.

We’re just a few days away from finally getting to see the brilliant twice Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams take up the role of the iconic Marilyn Monroe, and Friday really can’t come fast enough.

Everything we’ve seen from Simon Curtis’ My Week With Marilyn (all of which you can catch up on here) has been terrific, and without wanting to jinx anything, it’s all certainly pointing towards at least another nomination for Williams in the Best Actress category at the Oscars early next year. The awards race is close to being in full swing, and all expectations are for this to be a contender.

We’ve now got another terrific clip to share with you, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, entitled ‘Can You Spell That?’, and it gives us a look at the charm that Williams emanates in the role, dazzling a roomful of British reporters throwing questions her way.

“Colin Clark met Marilyn Monroe while working as a young assistant on Laurence Olivier’s “The Prince and the Showgirl.” When Marilyn experienced emotional difficulties during shooting, the 23-year-old third assistant director came to her aid and romance developed. But one week of honesty and fun was not enough to save the doomed star from self-destruction.”

Along with Williams, My Week With Marilyn has a terrific cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, and Dame Judi Dench. It will be out in cinemas on 25th November – this Friday – and I really can’t wait to see it. I think Williams is going to be brilliant in the role, and this clip is just a small demonstration of her wonderful acting talents. Without further ado, here it is for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.

Back at the end of the summer, we saw the fantastic first poster for Simon Curtis’ directorial feature debut, My Week With Marilyn, the Marilyn Monroe biopic that stars Michelle Williams as the actress, model, and singer renowned the world over.

Earlier this month, this was then followed up with a trailer and two images, and then a few days later with some more lovely pictures from the film, treating us to a look at some of the film’s supporting cast, which includes Emma Watson, Eddie Redmayne, Dame Judi Dench, and Kenneth Branagh.

An absolutely beautiful second poster for the film has now surfaced over at IMP Awards, in stunning black and white, with just Williams’ eyes coloured in a perfectly deep shade of blue. They literally look like gemstones.

For a long time, Williams was a lesser-known actress best known for her work on Dawson’s Creek, but in recent years, she’s been making a real name for herself, and has earned herself two Oscar nominations in the past five years for Brokeback Mountain and Blue Valentine. Though it’s a little too soon to call, I think a lot of people would be surprised if she doesn’t at least earn her third nomination for My Week With Marilyn when the Academy announces the nominees early next year.

The film will be out in cinemas on 18th November here in the UK, which gives us less than a month to wait to see it on the big screen. Everything we’ve seen for it so far looks very impressive, and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out next month. Without further ado, here’s the lovely second poster; Williams’ visual transformation into Monroe is utterly convincing. As usual, click to enlarge.

Firstly that the period detail is spot on and secondly that Michelle Williams is certainly up to the challenge of embodying one of the most beautiful and alluring actresses cinema has ever seen.

The new images show off some of the impeccable cast with Williams looking perfect as Monroe and Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier along with Eddie Redmayne as Colin Clark (Olivier’s assistant) and Emma Watson. Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Toby Jones, Judi Dench, Dougray Scott, Zoë Wanamaker and Derek Jacobi round off the cast do you know there’ll be something impressive up on screen.

Here is the UK we have a release date of the 18th of October and while the casting looks spot on, and these pictures compound the belief that the film will look the business, the success of the film necessarily rests on the performance of Michelle Williams and so far it’s looking very promising.

Here’s the gallery, click to make small things big.

This new trailer comes from Yahoo and the images below from The Daily Mail. It was shot at Pinewood Studios here in London and now after watching the movie, It’s completely different to the sort of film that was expecting. Have a watch of it below and let me know what you think in the comments section.

The movie is directed by Christopher Smith and stars Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Carice van Houten, David Warner, Kimberley Nixon and John Lynch.

Synopsis: Plague-ridden medieval England: Bodies lie scattered in their hundreds, the country is in turmoil. One hope remains, rumours of a village that is unaffected by the deadly disease. As God’s ambassador, young monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) is tasked in leading the fearsome knight Ulrich (Sean Bean) and his group of mercenaries to the remote village. Their quest is to hunt down a necromancer – someone able to bring the dead back to life.

Their journey is treacherous and filled with danger; encountering deadly bandits and vicious witch-burnings that will put their faith to the ultimate test. Though it’s upon entering the village that their true horror begins…

From Christopher Smith, director of cult hits Creep, Severance and Triangle, comes a brutal and terrifying epic that guarantees to chill the blood and stir the soul.

Emma Watson took a role in the 2007 UK TV adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s novel Ballet Shoes and in her first role post Potter (although they are still wrapping up reshoots on the second part of the final film) sees Watson take a role in Simon Curtis’ big screen version of My Week with Marilyn.

In the picture below, which was secreted between some other showbiz stories by the Mail’s Baz Bamigboye, Watson is seen playing opposite Eddie Redmayne as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant on the film The Prince and the Showgirl, the making of which acts as the film’s backdrop. The supporting cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Dougray Scott, Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench and Zoë Wanamaker. We saw the first picture from the film recently which showed Michelle Williams as Marilyn herself.

Here’s the picture of Emma Watson in the film,

Possibly the highest resolution image I’ve ever received has just been sent through to us at a whopping 19mb! I’ve shrunk it down for you so you can see it here but if for any reason you’d like to see the full res version, please give me a shout!

This new images gives us our first glimpse of what Michelle Williams will look like in the new role as Marylin Monroe in this new biopic which should be with us some time next year. The movie also stars Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Emma Watson and Julia Ormond and will be shooting for seven weeks at the world famous Pinewood Studios and is directed by Simon Curtis. Read on for the full low-down…..

Friday 8th October, London. Trademark Films and The Weinstein Company have announced that principal photography has started on My Week with Marilyn for 7 weeks at Pinewood Studios and on location in and around London. Michelle Williams plays the iconic Marilyn Monroe alongside a fantastic British cast including Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Emma Watson and Julia Ormond. The film chronicles a week in the life of Marilyn Monroe in which she escapes the shackles of her Hollywood career and embraces British life with Colin Clark. Directed by Simon Curtis and produced by David Parfitt, the film is based on Colin Clark’s diaries and has been adapted for the screen by Adrian Hodges.

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark, just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’, the film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe, who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller.

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account ‘The Prince, the Showgirl and Me’ was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as ‘My Week with Marilyn’ – this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.

Marilyn Monroe is played by the Academy Award nominated Michelle Williams (The soon to be released Blue Valentine, Shutter Island, Brokeback Mountain) and Tony award winning Eddie Redmayne (The Other Boleyn Girl, The Good Shepherd) stars as Colin Clark. Kenneth Branagh (Director of upcoming Thor, ‘Wallander’) plays Sir Laurence Olivier with Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace) as Dame Sybil Thorndike. They are joined by the very best of British acting talent including Julia Ormond (‘Temple Grandin,’ Che, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Vivien Leigh, Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II) as Arthur Miller, Zoe Wanamaker (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone), Emma Watson (Harry Potter series), Toby Jones (Frost Nixon, Infamous), Philip Jackson (Little Voice), Geraldine Somerville (Harry Potter series), Derek Jacobi (Gosford Park), Simon Russell Beale (An Ideal Husband) and Dominic Cooper (Tamara Drewe, An Education, Mamma Mia).

Simon Curtis directs. His credits include the BAFTA and Emmy winning ‘Cranford’, the International Emmy winning ‘A Short Stay in Switzerland’ and the Golden Globe nominated ‘Five Days’. The film is produced by Academy Award and BAFTA winner David Parfitt (Shakespeare in Love, The Madness of King George, I Capture the Castle) and the screenplay is by Adrian Hodges (Tom and Viv, ‘The Ruby in the Smoke’ and ‘David Copperfield’). It is based on Colin Clark’s diaries, ‘The Prince, The Showgirl and Me’ and ‘My Week with Marilyn.’

The film is produced by Trademark Films and is financed and distributed by The Weinstein Company. BBC Films and Lipsync Productions are also financing the picture. It was developed in association with the UK Film Council and BBC Films.

David Parfitt, Managing Director, Trademark Films, comments: “We are delighted to be re-establishing our successful partnership with the incomparable, irrepressible Harvey Weinstein. We have a superb cast and crew thanks in no small part to the support of The Weinstein Company and our incredible development partners: UK Film Council and BBC Films.”

Harvey Weinstein from The Weinstein Company says: “We are truly thrilled to be working with the immensely talented Simon Curtis on his feature debut, with our trusted partners and good friends producer David Parfitt, Christine Langan and BBC Films, from a remarkable true story, beautifully realised script, stellar cast and top-notch crew, we couldn’t be happier embarking on this production.”

Christine Langan, Creative Director of BBC Films, adds: “With his illustrious background in BBC drama, we are proud to be supporting Simon Curtis in his movie debut.
The brilliant host of talent that Simon, along with Oscar winning producer David Parfitt, has brought together to tell this gem of a British story is truly exciting and we are privileged to be going on this journey with the magnificent Harvey Weinstein.”
