This is a film I’m really, really looking forward to. Last year, we got to see Bradley Cooper take a very impressive turn leading what became a stellar box office success in Limitless, and this year should be another great one for the rising star.

He’ll be starring opposite Ryan Gosling in Derek Cianfrance’s generational crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines (you just know that’s going to be immense), David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook along with his Limitless star Robert De Niro, and before all that, his latest film The Words will be going to Sundance Film Festival later this month.

EW have just got the first poster for the film, and Collider have a nice new set of images, and they’re all looking excellent. The film has a fantastic cast starring alongside Cooper, including Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Ben Barnes, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, and J.K. Simmons. It’s been co-written and -directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, writers on TRON: Legacy (which of course also starred Olivia Wilde), who wrote the script more than a decade ago. It’s been a long time coming for the pair, and it’s great to see that they’ve lined up such a fantastic cast for what should be a brilliant film. Here’s what the official synopsis looks like:

Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.

In their directorial debut, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal have crafted a subtle tale that examines how overwhelming desire can lead to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Bolstered by a strong cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons, The Words adeptly assembles multiple narratives that reveal how one man’s lost legacy holds the life of another man captive.

Speaking to EW, Sternthal and Klugman said,

“We started by talking about writers and their lost work. What if you lost all your work? How long would it take you to move on?” says Sternthal.

“That led us to a question, what if you found the work?” Klugman adds.

Olivia Wilde co-stars as “someone who wants to be a great writer, and also wants to know the truth about what happened with this book,” Sternthal says.

The Words will be going to Sundance out in the States for its premiere, playing at four screenings between 27th and 29th January, including the closing day of the festival. With a bit of luck, it will be received with rapturous applause, and get picked up for distribution both across the Atlantic and here at home. And with a bit more luck, it’ll be one of the films selected for our own Sundance festival, coming to London in April for the first time. More news as we get it. For now, the first poster and the new images to enjoy. As usual, click to enlarge.

The trailer for the film released back in June wasn’t too promising and believing that Dennis Quaid is a sadistic serial killer with his clean-cut All American persona may seem a bit of a stretch, but never fear – the poster is here to show you what a deranged monster he can be:

With Quaid seemingly on the prowl for babies to eat (that or laxatives) and his two younger co-stars looking both fresh faced and suspicious of the clogged up lunatic respectively, all looks to be in order for a meaty and underwhelming clichéd horror offering. But hey, what is horror if not predictable. Speaking of which:

In the film, Ely Vaughn (Dennis Quaid) is a pillar of the community in tiny Smithville, Texas. The town’s mortician, Ely has been revered since his days as the high school’s star quarterback. But since the tragic death of his wife two years earlier, Ely has withdrawn from his neighbours, while local teens spread stories of supernatural goings on at Ely’s mansion—which is also the funeral home. When high school friends Travis (Tony Oller), Abby (Aimee Teegarden), Brian (Stephen Lunsford) and Danny (Devon Werkheiser) decide to check out the rumours. In doing so they stumble on a grotesque, long-hidden secret. The sadistic mortician next door will now stop at nothing to literally bury his past.

Featuring an adversary so angry he can literally bury the immaterial construct of time, it all sounds a little silly. But silly can be fun if done in the right way. Details of the film are a bit thin on the ground but judging from the stills and this poster Dennis Quaid looks to be delivering his menace with a generous side of ham. Which in what looks to be such a formulaic offering is the best you can hope for really.

I think news that the very popular pregnancy book, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, was going to be making its big-screen debut took everyone a little bit by surprise, given that the book itself isn’t so much a novel as a does-what-it-says-on-the-tin guidebook. (I believe – I’m yet to be expecting, myself.)

In reality, the film isn’t specifically adapting the book itself, but rather taking the idea and turning it into a film, and Yahoo Movies have just put up the first trailer, and it looks pretty excellent; a rom-com for us to look forward to next year.

When you have an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Chace Crawford, Chris Rock, Matthew Morrison, Thomas Lennon, and Joe Manganiello, it’s either going to be a huge hit or a big disappointment, and this certainly looks like it’s going to be a success.

As you can imagine from the title, the film centres around five couples on the path to parenthood, and the trailer looks like the comedy should be coming in doses just as big as the romance, and with a cast that big, it should have a pretty wide appeal.

Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee) has directed a script written first by Heather Hach (Freaky Friday) with a rewrite coming from Shauna Cross (Whip It), with the original source material being Heidi Murkoff’s book of the same name.

What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which is also set to feature a cameo from our own Cheryl Cole, will be released here in the UK on 18th May next year, and it looks like it’s going to be a great light-hearted way to see out the end of spring ahead of the immense summer blockbusters we’re all looking forward to.

That release date currently lines it up against Sacha Baron Cohen’s next film, The Dictator, with Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows coming out a week before it and Men in Black III coming out a week after. Without further ado, here’s the great first trailer for the film (with the exception of the pretty poor and far too obvious ‘Expect the Unexpected’ tagline at the end). Enjoy.

Despite the title being a little bit too obvious a joke for it being a ‘soccer mom’ comedy, Playing The Field certainly sounds like it has a lot of potential to be good. The film is directed by Gabriele Muccino, whose credits include the Will Smith-starrers, Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness, and features an excellent cast including the likes of Gerard Butler, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Judy Greer, Jessica Biel, Dennis Quaid, and the brilliant Uma Thurman.

The first images from the film have surfaced over at The Playlist, giving us a look at Butler, Zeta-Jones, and Greer, and though they don’t give us much of an insight into the film, they’re excellent to see all the same.

Playing the Field focuses on,

“Butler, who plays a troubled father and former pro soccer player who tries to make up for lost time by coaching his son’s team. He ends up in trouble when he gets involved with some of the local soccer moms. Biel will play Butler’s ex-wife who is engaged to be married, while Thurman will play a woman on the prowl for Butler. Zeta-Jones plays a hot newscaster, while Greer takes on the role of a lathered-up housewife.”

The film was first to be set around baseball as Butler’s son’s sport of choice, but after taking into consideration the potential to promote the film internationally, the sport was changed to soccer (or, as we crazy folk call it here, football), given its popularity across the globe.

With a UK release date scheduled for 20th April next year, we don’t have all that long to wait until it hits the big screen, and can no doubt look forward to seeing more from the film in the form of a trailer early in the new year. Without further ado, here are the first images to tie you down until then. As usual, click to enlarge.

Being a remake of the 1984 version starring Kevin Bacon I asked Kennny what pressures he was under following in the footsteps of one of Hollywood’s finest. I also talk with Julianne about her own personal move to London and how that mirrors the story of Ren in the movie as well ask talking about the pressures of recreating such a dance classic.

Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.

Footloose is released in UK cinemas today!

To celebrate, EW have gotten their mitts on the original Kevin Bacon audition video which I expect will appear on the Blu-ray in the extras when it no doubt gets a release. It’s a great little watch and shows how movies have changed somewhat over the last 25-odd years!

According to EW:

But Paramount was far from sold on him as Footloose‘s rug-cutting rebel Ren McCormack. According to Bacon, they didn’t think he was sexy enough. But the film’s director, Herb Ross, thought otherwise. So he got Bacon a $1,500 haircut and set up a screen test for him to strut his stuff for the studio in the hopes of changing their mind.

The Footloose remake stars Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Kenny Wormald, Miles Teller, Andie MacDowell, Ray McKinnon and will be with us September 27th.

Have a watch of the below. You’ll love it!

The ensemble romantic comedy, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, has more famous names attached to the film than you can shake a stick at, and according to the BBC, one more name has unexpectedly just signed on to the project.

Cheryl Cole, who is currently at work on her third solo album during Girls Aloud’s present hiatus, has been confirmed to have a small cameo that will mark her feature film debut.

The film is to be directed by Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee), with an early script by Heather Hach (Freaky Friday) that has been re-written by Shauna Cross (Whip It). What To Expect When You’re Expecting is based on the bestselling parenthood book of the same name, and though no plot is traceable through the original book, they’re turning it into a movie all the same. I think it’s one of those cases where they’re paying for the name more than the book itself, because so many millions of people across the world already know the title of the book.

The film will follow a number of couples as they become pregnant, and its cast already includes Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, Dennis Quaid, Chace Crawford, Chris Rock, and Matthew Morrison. Cole’s role is still yet to be confirmed, but it is rumoured that she’ll be playing a TV talent show judge.

If the rumours are true, it shouldn’t be too difficult a part for her to play, given that she’s had a wealth of experience in that field already with The X Factor’s fifth, sixth, and seventh series. Cole has in fact technically already had a minor cameo in the 2007 St. Trinian’s film with the rest of Girls Aloud as the school band, but (to the best of my knowledge, having not seen the film) she was just a performer in that film rather than being given a role to act, like she is being given now. She was going to be seen next in the first season of the US version of the show, but was recently let go from the judging panel, and won’t be returning for the UK’s next season either.

Rather than let that get to her, it looks like she’s now making her way into different forays and will be working on improving her recognition in America through film rather than television. I personally thought she was by the far the best judge on the UK version of The X Factor, and it will be interesting to see how big Cole’s cameo is, and whether or not it will be the start of a big screen presence from the English star. Maybe not, but we’ll see. At the very least, she has a genuine and natural charm that should come across nicely on screen. Filming has already begun for the project, with an aim to release the film in the US in May next year, and likely soon after here in the UK.

Soul Surfer is almost a good movie, its flaws are easy to forgive in light of the fact that the story is as inspirational as anything that will be released this year. Even when the film dips into sappy melodrama and cliched sequences, its story is uplifting enough to help the audience through the running time.

The film’s voice-over narration by Bethany Hamilton, played by AnnaSophia Robb, affords us a clear window into her world and the world of a surfer and makes the tragedy that befalls her all the more terrible. We need to care about Bethany so the attack and subsequent narrative has more weight, and Robb, along with the rest of the cast, do a good job in setting up the premise of the film.

The film’s family dynamic is played out nicely; the parents, played by Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt, are good in their respective roles and have plenty to do in terms of driving the story. The minor characters like Bethany’s friend and her family fill out a cast that, while never distracting to the story, are nothing special. All in all, the cast does the most with a script that had no less than seven credited writers on the story, which doesn’t necessarily make for an incoherent narrative, but rather, makes for a story that has no real voice.

One of the overlaying themes of the film is faith, based in Christianity, which is obvious in its approach but never preachy. The faith aspect revolves around Bethany’s involvement with a church youth group and its youth leader, played by Carrie Underwood. Underwood makes her film debut here, and its really nothing to write home about, however, that isn’t to say that her performance is bad, it just is. Director Sean McNamara, whose credits are deeply rooted in Disney channel fare and not much else, has a style of his direction which makes for a film that goes through the motions within the standard three-act structure while not making any leaps or bounds.

It’s hard to call this film anything more than inspiration on demand, but the movie may have a hard time finding viewership outside of a faith-based audience. That’s not to say that the film shouldn’t be viewed by non-believers or that a general audience won’t get anything out of the film; this is a film that takes the sports movie formula and plays out an inspiring yarn in a beautiful setting. It’s worth noting that the surfing sequences in the film are a lot of fun to watch while the shark attack was about as heavy as the drama got and made for an impressive sequence.

Soul Surfer is a decent family flick that doesn’t reinvent the sports genre, but does it’s best to leave the audience with a sense of how tragedy can bring out the best in someone through strength, perseverance and a little bit of faith.

Here’s the first poster for new movie, Soul Surfer which tells the story of a young up and coming surfer who loses an arm in a shark attack. With the help of her family and her faith, she’s able to get back on the board and conquer her fears of going back into the water. You can check out the trailer for the movie here.

Synopsis: Bethany was born to surf. A natural talent who took to the waves at a young age, she was leading an idyllic, sun-drenched, surfer girl’s life on the Kauai Coast, competing in national competitions with her best friend Alana, when everything changed in a heartbeat. On Halloween morning, Bethany was on a typical ocean outing when a 14-foot tiger shark came out of nowhere and seemed to shatter all her dreams. In the moving aftermath of this headline-making story, Bethany fights to recover and grapples with the future. Strengthened by the love of her parents, Tom and Cheri, she refuses to give in or give up, and begins a bold return to the water. Still, the questions keep hammering her: Why did this happen? Why did she have to lose everything? Will she ever feel the joy and power of riding the waves again? And if she can’t be a surfer, then who is she?

The devastating 2004 tsunami in the Pacific Ocean unexpectedly gives Bethany a new perspective. Traveling to Phuket, Thailand with her youth-group leader Sara Hill, she witnesses life beyond her own shoreline and discovers her greater purpose–she can make a difference in the lives of others. Filled with a new sense of hope and direction, she returns home with a renewed resolve to conquer her own limitations and set an encouraging example for people facing adversity. At the National Championships, Bethany bravely faces off with her fiercest rival, Malia Birch, and takes her astonishing one-armed surfing technique to the limit. But as the horn blows, and the suspenseful competition kicks off, Bethany is no longer thinking about the challenges of her body. Now, her surfing, her biggest dreams and her life have become about pushing her own physical limits to touch the souls of others.

Soul Surfer is directed by Sean McNamara and stars AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Jeremy Sumpter, Kevin Sorbo, Craig T. Nelson and Carrie Underwood.

It hits UK cinemas 17th June.

It’s the kind of inspirational tale that screams out for a film adaptation and sure enough, the big screen version of her story went into production last year and the teaser trailer is now up on YouTube.

Soul Surfer stars Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s AnnaSophia Robb in the role of Hamilton, while Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt co-star as her parents. The shark incident isn’t touched upon in the teaser, which I’m guessing the makers are consciously downplaying in the marketing of the film, as to avoid it becoming an off-putting Jaws Jr. for the intended family audience.

Maybe they should be looking into how it could play as a double bill alongside this year’s similarly themed limb loss/life affirmation tale, 127 Hours.

Shaw Moore (played by John Lithgow in the original). The image comes to us via director Craig Brewer’s twitter, and most likely the editing room for the film as well.

Unfortunately for me, Footloose is one of those films that I have yet to watch. As upsetting as it is it just doesn’t remain top of mind with me and everytime I hear about this remake I kick myself for not having seen it yet, especially since Kevin Bacon is in it.

The film stars Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough in the lead roles with Andie MacDowell and Ray McKinnon in supporting roles. The comedy/musical remake is expected to to hit theaters on October 14th of this year. Now check out the pissed off Quaid below, a man I undoubtedly believe will play a good killjoy (despite the fact I haven’t seen Lithgow’s performance).

The first image from the remake of seminal 80’s rebellious dance flick Footloose has arrived online via the director’s own Twitter page.

Craig Brewer (the filmmaker behind Hustle & Flow) has swapped pimps for pumps in this tale of a teenager from the city who finds himself living in a small town and clashing with the local minister who has outlawed dancing!

The newcomers in the picture are leads Kenny Wormald (in the role which found Kevin Bacon in sizzling form) and Julianne Hough.

Dennis Quaid and Andie MacDowell star as the killjoy reverend and his wife (played by John Lithgow and Diane Weist in the original), who are also the parents of Hough’s character.

I first saw Michael Sheen on screen playing Tony Blair in the first of Peter Morgan’s Blairology, The Deal, opposite David Morrisey’s morose Gordon Brown and loved the sparky mouse-like chirp he used to embody the then Prime Minister of Britain, and I was hooked.

After making The Deal and stopping on the way to see The Queen with Sheen’s pitch perfect Kenneth Williams in Fantabulosa, the man who would be Blair has honed his uncanny ability to take the larger than life personalities and make them more than caricatures. With his return to the screen as Blair in The Special Relationship appearing on DVD today have Morgan and Sheen more to discover about the man?

What makes Morgan’s films about Tony Blair special is the moment when the 24 hour news cycle was pushed out and the conversations continued, and in these dramas we are given an idea of what went on behind those closed doors. The Deal anchored around the leadership of The Labour Party, The Queen dealt with the balance of power following the death of Princess Diana and The Special Relationship deals with Blair’s alliance with the US Presidents Clinton and, in the final, fateful moments, Bush.

Sheen rolls out another fine performance as Blair, and his all important chemistry with Dennis Quaid works wonders, in particular the decisive moment in the joint press conference amidst the Monica Lewinsky affair when Blair is asked about his support for the President is a joy to behold.

As with The Queen, and to a lesser extent in The Deal, it is the opposing number in the equation which is the more interesting character to mine; Quaid’s Clinton is a touch above parody sparking off Hope Davis as Hilary, and it is their relationship, and perhaps the one involving Monica Lewinsky, which gives this film its heart.

Sheen is fantastic, the rest of the cast doing their job well, but there’s less to unveil of Blair until the very end, when his friendship with Clinton comes into conflict with the political ambition, which has come a long way since the Islington restaurant of The Deal.

It’s a cut above many of the TV dramas on screens at the moment, and it’s another great turn out for both Sheen and Morgan, and it may not be the last.

Speaking with The Guardian a week ago Peter Morgan talked about the ‘proverbial bad penny’,

We’re just beginning to create the monster…I keep feeling that we’ve left without the story being complete. There’s still a way to go – we still haven’t nailed him.

Even with this, we’re just beginning – how did Blair stretch from Clinton to Bush? We’re just beginning to create the monster.

And in many ways that’s the feeling you get from this new chapter in the Tony Blair story, that the journey from The Deal doesn’t end with the inauguration of George W. Bush, that’s there’s more to tell.

The film in question is “a Jerry Lee Lewis-related project”, that was originally set up years ago with Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder in the lead roles, and Terence Malick directing. The script was described as being “much darker” than Great Balls of Fire.

THR are now reporting that Malick is working with Brad Pitt to bring the project to life, and, after the praise she’s received for her lead role in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, hopes to secure Portman for an undisclosed role.

However, with Malick about to start production on an untitled romantic drama with Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko, don’t expect to see anything for three or four years, at the very least.

Legion is releasedon DVD and Blu Ray today and stars Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Adrianne Palicki, Charles S. Dutton, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Durand, Jon Tenney, Willa Holland, Kate Walsh and is directed by Scott Stewart.

The basic premise of the movie is that God (although never mentioned by name) isn’t happy with his people and decides to start all over again, much like the Bible story, Noah and the Ark. The difference here is that rather than sending a giant flood to wipe out the earth, God uses….. Us! Sound a bit odd. Well, it sort of is!

While God prepares his army of angels to come and possess us all, one angel, Michael (Bettany) stands up against the Lord and Creator. Michael is on a mission to save a baby which is currently in the womb of Charlie played by Adrianne Palicki. If the baby lives, humanity has a chance, if he/she doesn’t, it’s the end of the world as we know it. Along with Bettany, it’s down to a human with the stupidest name of all time, Jeep Hanson (Lucas Black) to try to defend the love of his life who couldn’t care less if he was attracted to her or not.

Legion is a very confused movie with a rather large cast and no real idea of where it’s going. The fact that a rogue angel stands up to God to defy his will is crazy will no doubt annoy any Christian who watched it.

Some redeeming qualities include the sound design which was just fantastic and the special effects but I’m afraid neither save this movie from the tripe that it turned out to be. I’m rather sad it was so bad because from the trailers, it has potential to be something great and I think if the screenplay had been better, we’d have seen a great movie. However it was full of so many absurdities and cliched lines that it’s probably destined to go to the bottom of the bargain bin at your local service/gas station.

If Terminator was merged with Dawn of the Dead with a splash of Childsplay and Men in Black thrown in for good measure, you’d get some way to explaining Legion’s storyline.

Legion is released on DVD and Blu ray – Monday, 9th August and you can purchase it here.
