THR are reporting that 20^th Century Fox have hired Brad Caleb Kane, writer-producer of Fox’s popular series, Fringe, to write the script for the upcoming reboot of Daredevil.

Last seen on the screen back in 2003 with Ben Affleck then taking the titular role, this new film is to be directed by British music and film director, David Slade, who last directed the third film in the Twilight saga, Eclipse.

Though the original film wouldn’t make it onto many people’s favourite comic book movies of all time, I think it often gets over-looked and is underrated in a lot of people’s opinions. Affleck played the role of the blind superhero brilliantly, and the film had the added bonus of having a cameo from one of my favourite directors, who’s friends with Affleck, Kevin Smith. It may not have done incredibly by Fox’s standards, making $180m. off an $80m. budget, but I’m still very much looking forward to this reboot.

Kane has been asked to adapt Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Born Again, a 7-issue arc from the Daredevil series back in 1986 that has a much darker take on the tale of the superhero, seeing his identity uncovered by the Kingpin (last played by Michael Clarke Duncan) and falling further and further into insanity at the mob boss’ doing.

Slade, whose feature credits include Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night, is no rookie to dark films, and I think he could shoot the hell out of a Born Again-based Daredevil script. As good as the first film was, I think a darker take on Daredevil could definitely make for a much more interesting story.

Affleck said many years ago that he didn’t ever plan on reprising his role as the superhero, so it’s not likely that he’ll be donning the Daredevil costume second time around. A few years ago, the L.A. Times reported that at Comic-Con International 2008, Jason Statham expressed a very clear interest in playing the role:

“Just give me the chance, I would love to be Daredevil.”

And Miller, who was also at the event, said,

“I think he should be Daredevil too.”

Whether or not that still stands, I don’t know. I’m a really big fan of Statham’s though, and if he thinks he can do it, I believe him, and I’d love to do see him do it. With a director and writer now signed on to the project, it hopefully won’t be long until we get news of who it is that gets to put on the red suit.

David Slade (30 Days of Night) has been hired by 20th Century Fox to direct a new Daredevil film.

Daredevil, based on the Marvel character of the same name, was released in 2003 to mixed reviews, and starred Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell and Jon Favreau.

The as-yet-untitled Daredevil film was written by David Scarpa and, according to Variety, will continue the story of the first, rather than rebooting it.

Slade had been in talks to direct 20th Century Fox’s Wolverine reboot, but lost out to Darren Aronofsky.

Before Mike White placed himself in the Longbourn wilderness to direct a big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a few other names were floating around the internet-o-sphere as potential directors for the film.

Those names may come around again as Deadline are reporting that White has left the project to stumble on without direction.

David O. Russell was slated at one point but left the production before White stepped up, the other names considered were David Slade, Mike Newell and Neil Marshall, and it would be interesting to see if they crop up again as Lionsgate search for a new director.

Once a director is in place casting details will follow and so far only Natalie Portman was linked (then left) the film leaving the iconic literary figures up for grabs. It may just be because of the buzz surrounding Hobo with a Shotgun but I’d love to see Rutger Hauer as Mr Bennett and I can’t deny that I’d love to see Judi Dench reprise her role as Lady Catherine De Bourgh, only with samurai swords.

Grahame-Smith’s alternate literary world has another movie on the way as casting begins for his recent Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

I’ve been loving all the featurettes that are being released for the new Back to the Future Blu-ray which is released in the UK 25th October but I’m a little worried that they might be giving everything away releasing these new featurettes. That said, i know people are desperate to see them which is why I’m posting two more here.

The first focuses on the Test Screenings for the movie and how they struggled with them initially and the second looks at how they created 2015 for Back to the Future: Part II. Both are well worth a watch!

Last weekend, the Scream Awards 2010 hit LA with numerous stars turning up to the event. Not least if them were Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) to promote the remastered re-release version of Back to the Future.

The duo were introduced by David Slade arriving from 1985 in a DeLorean who ended up looking quite like Eric Stoltz (not sure if that was intentional? See here why if you’re not sure). If you love Back to the Future, you have to watch this footage below cos you’ll absolutely love it!

The Blu-ray is released October 25th and we have the chance for you to win the special edition copy here.

Following David O Russell’s departure from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (the blood and guts reimagining of the classic Jane Austen novel), Deadline are reporting that two of our own, Mike Newell and Neil Marshall, are possible replacements in the director’s chair.

Although Natalie Portman (followed by Scarlett Johansson) was down to play heroine Elizabeth Bennet alongside The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper as Mr. Darcy, it’s not known whether the two actors will still be attached when a new director is found.

Pajiba’s twitter feed also threw these three names into the rumour mill, Catherine O’Hara as the marvelously obtuse Mrs Bennet, Tilda Swinton for Lady Catherine ‘Do you know who I am?’ De Bourgh and Mia Wasikowska for Elizabeth Bennet.

David Slade is another possible replacement and given his history in horror (30 Days of Night), combined with the huge box office for Twilight Saga: Eclipse, his last venture into that type of material, he could be pretty high on the list.

With studios mourning the Deathly Hallows and the twilight of Twilight, all eyes are seemingly on The Hunger Games, with many expecting it to become the next big thing.

Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of novels have proved to be a huge success, with a rabid fanbase already in place for Lionsgate’s films, and Deadline have narrowed down the three previous potentials for the director’s chair to Gary Ross, writer of Big and director of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville.

Ross was linked to a new adaptation of Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth but if he picks up Lionsgate’s offer he’ll be taking on something of a phenomenon.

The fans will no doubt debate the choice of director, just as Harry Potter and Twilight fans did before them, and if Ross is selected I wonder if he’ll court the legion of fans who are eagerly awaiting (or not) the film adaptation?

The role of Katniss will also be under intense scrutiny and while Chloe Moretz was, perhaps inevitably, the first to be suggested, if Ross takes on the job his first, and perhaps most important, choice will be finding the right person to play the heroine.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to your local multiplex news comes that the third installment in the Twilight Saga, Twilight: Eclipse is coming back to the cinema this weekend as it marks Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) birthday which is apparently on Monday 13th September!

Summit Entertainment have realised they can make a little more money from the teenagers who want to see the pale looking Edward (Robert Pattinson) or ab-tastic Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and have decided to bring it out for a limited time. If you can’t wait to see the movie again, I suggest you go this weekend as it’s still a while to wait for the blu ray and DVD to be released on 6th December just in time for Christmas! According to Deadline who bring us the news, Summit are

“allowing moviegoers to celebrate Bella’s birthday with their friends” in 1,187 theaters in North America.

The Twilight Saga has been a huge success for Summit Entertainment, leaving most Hollywood studios green with envy. It seems that Lionsgate are hoping to jump on the bandwagon with an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of novels, The Hunger Games.

A script has been penned by Billy Ray (Breach), and Lionsgate are hoping to bag either Sam Mendes (American Beauty), Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) or David Slade, who delivered us Twilight: Eclipse, to direct the first installment in the series.

According to The Playlist, the story follows Katniss Everdeen, an enterprising 16-year old from a poor territory that was once Appalachia, who becomes a teen gladiator in a reality show event that is a battle to the death against other teens from the 12 districts that make up what is left of the USA, which is run by a cruel totalitarian government.

It’ll be interesting to see who, if any of these names, eventually sign on. Slade is probably the most suitable for this genre, but if he signs on for Wolverine 2, then he’ll be unavailable. In my opinion, neither Mendes or Ross have the suitable background for this type of film.

It’s sure to be a well-documented, and speculated affair. Lionsgate, however, will undoubtedly be wanting to find someone quick sharp, in order for filming to get underway for a possible late 2012 release, once the Twilight hysteria has drawn to a close.

In related news, Chloe Moretz has expressed her interest in playing Katniss Everdeen, saying, “I really, really want to be in it.” Digitalspy now say she’s the favourite to win the role.

Darren Aronofsky is still preoccupied with Black Swan in advance of its release in the US on 1st December, however with his planned reboot of Robocop having fallen through, he will soon be looking around for his next project.

According to Deadline, Aronofsky is part of a two horse race with David Slade (Hard Candy, Twilight: Eclipse) for the director’s chair on Wolverine 2. We reported here on the previous two-horse race between Slade and Robert Schwentke, since when Schwentke has dropped out of the running. Until Twilight: Eclipse, Slade would have seemed as unconventional a candidate as Aronofsky, however Slade has now been baptised into the waters of effects-heavy franchises and may therefore be felt by 20th Century Fox to have the edge.

As Deadline rightly point out though, Hugh Jackman, who will of course appear again as Wolverine, holds a great deal of sway over the final decision and he has worked before with Aronofsky (on the audience and critic-dividing “The Fountain”). Black Swan is generating plenty of buzz, however 20th Century Fox are going to have to decide whether Aronofsky’s lack of bigger-budget experience is too much of a risk. As we know, it can work out great, as it did with Christopher Nolan on Batman Begins or Bryan Singer with X-Men, or terribly, as it did with Gavin Hood on the first Wolverine film and Tim Story on The Fantastic Four.

Whether this will come down to a coin-toss, or a final decision by Jackman, remains to be seen. Personally, I have found Aronofsky’s style and approach a little too dour and depressing at times and Slade seems to have injected a refreshing lightness and self-awareness into the Twilight saga. Perhaps the decision will come down in the end to the style for which the studio are looking. As Steven Neish reported, whoever is at the helm, Wolverine 2 will be set in Japan and find our favourite be-clawed antihero getting caught up in a tussle with the samurai-sword wielding brothers and father of a new love-interest. At some point, a decision will be made and we will be sure to let you know as soon as we hear.

According to Vulture, the sequel to 2009′s X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set to be directed by one of two people.

Their sources report that Twilight: Eclipse’s David Slade and Robert Schwentke (The Time-Traveler’s Wife) are currently vying for Fox’s Wolverine 2, with an insider insisting “It’s going to be Slade.”

While the final decision will invariably be made by Hugh Jackman after he has met with both parties next week, Slade is an alluring choice. Eclipse was by far the best Twilight film to date; at times both thrilling and undeniably funny. His approach also went some way to developing the three leads, and after the cameo-heavy X-Men Origins, Wolverine the sequel could do with increased focus on character.

The sequel, which will be set in Japan as suggested by the previous movie’s end of credits scene, will follow Marvel comic’s continuity with the introduction of a new love interest for Jackman’s Wolverine. The plot, which was last drafted by Christopher McQuarrie (X-Men) in January, will see our titular hero do battle with the young woman’s father and samurai sw0rd-wielding brothers.

Twilight: Eclipse may not be the most critically acclaimed movie in the world but there’s no denying the fans are mad for it. No doubt some of them have already seen the movie 5 time just to see Taylor Lautner take his top off, or Robert Pattinson kiss Kristen Stewart (AGAIN!)! The movie directed by British Director, David Slade took $68.5m at the US box office this weekend but failed to beat the 4th July record set by Spider-Man 2 which clocked in a huge $88m when it was released in 2004. Since it’s release last Wednesday, Eclipse has managed a $161m haul with the UK to still open it’s Twilight doors on Friday 9th July.

M. Night Shyamalan’s new 3d movie, The Last Airbender also did very well this weekend bringing in $41.6m with Disney’s Toy Story 3 earning a further $30.1m to it’s already increasing takings count.

Last night, London saw the UK premiere for one of the most anticipated movies of the teen (if you’re a teenager anyway!) in the form of Twilight: Eclipse. The movie stars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in the third movie based on the books by Stephanie Meyer,

British director David Slade helmed this third installment and he was there last night along with his supporting cast which included Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen), Nikki Reed (Rosalie Cullen), Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen),  Xavier Samuel (Riley – newborn),  Alex Meraz (Paul – wolfpack), Booboo Stewart (Seth – wolfpack) and director David Slade.

Our friends at Upbeat were at the premiere and managed to get interview with all the cast in attendance. You can see all that happened in the footage embedded below.

The time has finally come when the third installment of one of the most popular teen franchises in the history of cinema comes to the big screen. Twilight: Eclipse is officially released on the 9th July but this weekend sees some advanced preview screenings of the third movie in the saga that has made Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and our own Robert Pattinson household names.

With news that Eclipse has already broken the box office record for a midnight opening in the US, you’d hope we’re in for some good things. Read on to find out what I thought.

I’ve not read any of Stephanie Meyer’s books before seeing any of The Twilight Saga which I guess is good and bad. Good because I go into the cinema not knowing what is before me and bad because I have nothing with which to base the movies on. The books became a worldwide phenomenon well before the movies did and for good reason. Teenagers (mostly, but not exclusively) were able to lose themselves in the imagination of a book where Vampires had treaties with Werewolves, a Royal Family and struggled to pass through life as us humans. Merge this into a love story where a human falls in love with both a vampire and a werewolf and we have the Twilight Saga. But does this translate to the big screen to make a good movie?

Synopsis: In THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

In this, the penultimate book, we get to see Bella having to make a choice between the two loves of her life and most of the script in Eclipse is spent in dialogue with either Bella and Edward, or Bella and Jacob. There’s no question that this movie is much darker than the previous movies, Twilight and New Moon, and that is thanks mainly to the British director, David Slade who was brought on to the project specifically to give it that darker edge. Slade is responsible for movies such as 30 Days of Night which is another vampire movie yes, but one of the darkest movies I’ve seen.

The cast for Eclipse is extensive and far reaching with stars being made of Anna Kendrick for example while shooting other movies in between the  Twilight series. She is sadly underused and I was surprised to see Michael Sheen (one of my favourite characters from New Moon) not making an appearance in Eclipse, but then he never appeared in the book (although I’m told he’s back with a vengeance in the final movie(s)). Kendrick is just one example of underused characters but I had to keep reminding myself that the books are based around the three main characters and I think that’s where the movies fall down.

I don’t know if reading page after page of dialogue in a book translates better than it does on the film as you find yourself getting bored. There were certain scenes in the movie where vampires were attacking humans in extremely dark scenes and I loved those, it why Slade was brought into Eclipse and it’s what he does so well, but the script is just so long winded and repetitive. That said, there were a couple of lines in the movie which had the audience roaring with laughter (I wont spoil them here) intentionally and that worked really well. Obviously there are the essential scenes of Taylor Lautner with his top off which again, had the audience laughing, especially when Pattinson asks the question:

“Doesn’t he have a shirt?!”

The sub story to the movie is the fact that Bella is being hunted by Victoria after Edward killed her mate in the original twilight movie. In Eclipse, she amasses an army that will have the Cullen family destroyed and Bella taken away from Edward which gives us an epic battle as the climax to the movie. I just wish that more had been made of this storyline than the love story. But that’s why the Twihard’s love it so much isn’t it?

Although critically, Twilight: Eclipse isn’t the best film ever made, you have to take your hat off to Summit Entertainment and E1 for making such an popularfranchise. The fan base is huge and I must remember, I am most definitely not the target audience.

Unfortunately, none of the three main stars (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart & Taylor Lautner) were able to make it which probably won’t please some of the fans at the UK Premiere which takes place this evening in London’s Leicester Square. Tomorrow we’ll be bringing you footage from the red carpet and hopefully some interviews with the stars of the movie.
