This is the latest milestone on the odd journey of Machete, with the first artwork to the sequel (of the two planned further films) to the ridiculously over the top 2010 Grindhousesque revenge thriller.

While the first film showed that the first film made for a great trailer it’s a little surprising that Robert Rodriguez has two more films in the series in his future, not least the final installment which, while not greenlit as of yet, will exist in trailer form with this new film and is called Machete Kills Again…In Space! Of course he does, but the plot synopsis for this film involves a weapon being launched into space so there’s an obvious way in there.

Machete Kills will be filming in the Spring and no doubt will include the same bevy of odd cameos and bloodsplatter.

Danny Trejo has a credits list longer than probably any well-known actor I can remember seeing, making a name for himself as being tougher than a coffin nail on screen. Best known for his frequent collaborations with Robert Rodriguez, the actor also has leading and smaller roles in much lesser-known films, and the upcoming Bad Ass is one such film.

Led by Trejo, the film also stars Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Charles S. Dutton (Alien 3, Gothika), and marks the feature directorial debut of Craig Moss. We’ve now got the first trailer to share with you, via /Film, and it looks pretty much like what you’d expect from a film called Bad Ass.

“Decorated Vietnam hero Frank Vega returns home only to get shunned by society leaving him without a job or his high school sweetheart. It’s not until forty years later when an incident on a commuter bus (where he protects an elderly black man from a pair of skin heads) makes him a local hero where he’s suddenly celebrated once again. But his good fortune suddenly turns for the worse when his best friendKlondikeis murdered and the police aren’t doing anything about it.”

I’d never personally heard of him, but the film is based on the true story of the Internet meme Epic Beard Man, and we see Trejo sporting a rather fabulous beard in this first short trailer.

Bad Ass doesn’t yet have a release date secured either here or in the States, and it’s possible that we might well have to wait for it to hit the shelves before we get a chance to watch it.

Universal Home Entertainment have released info and the first synopsis for the sequel to 2010 movie, Death Race 2 (which in turn was the sequel to the bigger budget movie, Death Race which starred Jason Statham). This movie comes from Universal 1440 Entertainment and will see Luke Goss reprising his role as Frankenstein alongside Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Robin Shou, Fred Koelher, Dougray Scott and Hlubi Mboya so although it’s a Home Entertainment release, it has a pretty substantial and well-known cast.

Here’s the synopsis but if you’ve seen the first movie, you can pretty much guess it!

Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas , aka Frankenstein, is a superstar driver in the brutal prison yard demolition derby known as Death Race. Only one victory away from winning freedom for himself and his pit crew, Lucas is plunged into an all-new competition more vicious than anything he has experienced before. Pitted against his most ruthless adversaries ever, Lucas fights to keep himself and his team alive in a race in South Africa ‘s infernal Kalahari Desert. With powerful forces at work behind the scenes to ensure his defeat, will Lucas’ determination to win at all costs mean the end of the road for him?

Just when you thought every variation on the Christmas-themed film had been attempted, along comes another (in glorious 3D, no less) which manages to make you simultaneously warm, festive and repulsed.

This third instalment finds our two lead characters somewhat estranged from each other, due to their now divergent lifestyles. While Harold (John Cho) has become a married, successful businessman, Kumar (Kal Penn) is still an aimless, habitual pothead (a world which in reality is far removed from actor, who also moonlights as a White House intern!)

Their paths cross again when a mysterious package for Harold causes his old stoner BBF to pay him an unexpected visit, resulting in the huge Christmas tree which sits centre stage at his pristine residence being destroyed. To avoid facing the wrath of Harold’s Xmas-obsessed father-in-law  (Danny Trejo, decked out in a Xmas woolly jumper which is almost worth the price of admittance alone) the duo head off into the city (with Harold’s work colleague and young daughter, plus Kumar’s horny housemate in tow) in a desperate attempt to find a replacement. They manage to get tangled up with a variety of shady characters and increasingly outlandish situations, whilst rediscovering that true meaning of Christmas and how it can bring absent friends together once more.

Where many features in this modern age of 3D work hard at ensuring the effect is as unobtrusive as possible and subtle within the storytelling, much of the fun here is derived from how the makers gleefully draw attention to the format at every available opportunity (perhaps as a spiky reminder of how gimmicky it can become in the hands of lesser filmmakers). Objects fire across the screen in grossly exaggerated slow-mo and the sheer volume of 3D artists tasked with creating the copious chronic smoke effects in this film must have seriously trumped all those involved in bringing the vast world of Pandora to life.

Crude, lewd and as vehemently un-PC as ever, a large part of the film’s success is witnessing all of that content juxtaposed with a colourful, almost traditional looking seasonal family-friendly film, right down to the sappy soundtrack and the bright, garish colours which burst all over the screen (that’s not the only thing to explode everywhere either). Just when you let your guard down and you’re intermittently fooled into thinking you’re in the middle of some cloying, sentimental Christmas flick, another outrageous set-piece (happily) drags you back down to the film’s puerile, gross-out level.

This is a film which knows its audience inside out (some of the US-centric references tend to grate at times, however) and while a couple of gags fall a little flat, the majority hit the filthy, bodily fluid-encrusted mark. Neil Patrick Harris also returns for a show-stopping surrealist song and dance scene, and above all, this is ridiculous, knockabout absurdist stuff (a sequence even takes place in Claymation after the duo trip out having knocked back spiked eggnog) which is the perfect antidote to the saccharine Christmas fare it cheekily parodies.

In a nutshell, if your idea of a fun evening at the cinema is watching an infant inadvertently being introduced to (and ingesting) the gauntlet of recreational drugs out there, this is the perfect film for you. Merry Christmas everybody!

Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven — and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high

First of all, the trailer below is NSFW, not by a long way. Secondly, excellent use of 3D seems likely to be employed, given the body parts, explosions and so forth that come flying at us in the course of the few minutes we have before us now. We’ve had a trailer and posters/stills before, but this is different.

Harold & Kumar-love is very much in the eye of the beholder. If you are upset, offended or turned off by any of nudity, racism, blasphemy, drug-addled toddlers, puppets with over-sized “parts”, sweary Santa Claus, more swearing, gratuitous violence or Neil Patrick Harris, then this might not be for you. If that sounds like your sort of thing, then proceed.

To be fair, from the look of the trailer this should be very funny stuff if you can stomach the more extreme content and aren’t concerned by non-PC behaviour. Likewise, the 3D seems to be amusingly employed, which is more welcome than unnecessary retro-fitting of blockbusters that don’t benefit from it anyway.

Don’t watch this with your boss, your mum or anyone young or delicate. For everyone else, proceed.

Apparently Christmas is coming and it’s in 3D! Not because all my local shops now have a Christmas section in, oh no! It’s because Yahoo have released these four new character posters for new movie, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas!

Loving these three new posters which not only look great but successfully continue to take the mickey out of 3D just as well as the trailer did! The movie stars John Cho​, and Kal Penn​ in their roles as Harold and Kumar.

Cody Horn (Flipped) has been added to the cast of low-budget male stripper film Magic Mike.

Horn will star as the female lead alongside Channing Tatum (The Eagle), Alex Pettyfer (I am Number Four), Matthew McConaughey (The Lincoln Lawyer), Matt Bomer (Flightplan), Joe Manganiello (Spider-Man) and Riley Keough (The Runaways).

Magic Mike centers on an experienced stripper (Tatum) who teaches a younger dancer (Pettyfer) how to hustle his wares on and off stage at the exotic club Xquisite, run by Dallas (McConaughey).

Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) is attached to direct, with filming scheduled to begin next month.

Horn will next be seen in Geoffrey Fletcher’s Violet & Diary opposite Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel and Danny Trejo.

As you’ll see from the trailer, this movie is like the ones which preceeded it and just love to take the mickey out of as much as they can including their own use of 3d!

The trailer for first-time director Kern Saxton’s revenge flick Sushi Girl has debuted online (via YouTube), though you might have missed it in the afterglow of one Comic-Con.

When a group of thieves meet six years after a successful jewel heist, their celebrations are short-lived;  any remaining amiability goes out the warehouse window when the whereabouts of the hidden stash come into question.

The film certainly looks great, with a knock out cast including Tony Todd (Candyman), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Jeff Fahey (TV’s Lost), Danny Trejo (Predators), Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter) and Mark Hamill (like you don’t know!) as its resident nasties; it’s almost The Expendables for genre buffs.

Currently unrated and without a release date, Todd suggested in an interview with Empire that a Spring 2012 release looks most likely.

*Yes, that was a thickly veiled Friends reference.

Robert Rodriguez has been in San Diego promoting his new production company, Quick Draw Productions, and two of the things he’s looking to make are the follow-up to Sin City and the two sequels that would make a Machete trilogy, THR report.

The brilliant writer, director, producer, and all-round talented filmmaker has been talking about a Sin City sequel for a while now, and with his new production company starting up, we can hopefully look forward to this much sooner rather than later.

He’s announced that his new company will be partnering with AMD Austin, a hardware company he’s long been working with, whose technology he says,

“force him to stretch creatively to meet the new possibilities.”

It’s almost always good news to hear directors trying to stretch themselves, especially with as talented a director as Rodriguez, and this is definitely good news when it includes his vision for Sin City 2. Rodriguez says that he and Frank Miller will be co-directing the sequel as they did the first film, and that Miller is finishing up the screenplay now,

“which has reverted back to the trio-of-storylines approach of the first movie—“A Dame to Kill For” plus two new stories Miller has devised. Many of the characters from the first film would reappear, and Rodriguez says he doesn’t see scheduling as a problem since in the last one the green screen allowed him to shoot actors in the same scene as much as eight months apart. No one has yet been cast, though the writer-director claims they could shoot it soon and quickly, as early as the fall.”

Though it’s still pretty early days yet, I’m remaining optimistic because Rodriguez sounds optimistic. With his own production company granting him more control of what he wants to make, it could well mean that he and Miller will be able to start filming as and when he sees fit after Miller finishes the script.

Rodriguez also says that the sequel will be in 3D. And whilst that might cause a bit of a sigh for many, the director thinks that the technology will only serve to make the film that much better, saying that it will,

“really enhance the CG-noir landscapes the content uses (the actors are filmed against green screen).”

I think the man is talented enough a filmmaker for people who aren’t that fond of 3D films to grant him more than a bit of trust to bring us an awesome sequel, and if shooting really does begin as early as autumn, then we might well be able to look forward to a second Sin City before long.

Coming next from the writer-director-producer is the fourth Spy Kids film, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, which stars frequent collaborators Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, and Danny Trejo. And with the new film introducing a new set of kids, if the fourth succeeds, Rodriguez admits that more films in the series could be on the way.

Trejo and Alba most recently worked with Rodriguez on last year’s Machete, and Rodriguez also has sequels in development for that too. The first of two planned sequels has already been written, and hopefully it won’t be long for them to go into production either. Obviously, with Rodriguez helming all of these projects, they can’t really all be done at the same time. But he’s known for firing on all cylinders, non-stop, so expect big things to come from him and Quick Draw Productions over the next few years.

This new trailer for the latest slice of Robert Rodriguez’s kid sized espionage saga shows off the usual eye-melting visual flourishes and while the sight of Jessica Alba kicking all kinds of henchman arse is sure to appeal to many the true value of this video is to explain exactly how the Aroma-Scope will work.
 
If you were around in the 80s you may remember playground fights over the latest Scratch ‘n’ Sniff stickers which would produce a flavoured pungence when you scraped your fingernail over it. Aroma-Scope works in the same way. You’ll get a card when you buy your ticket and various on-screen prompts will tell you which smell to inhale. It looks nuts, and I can see it going down very well in cinemas, as long as the scenes involving the dog (voiced by Ricky Gervais) don’t involve a prompt.

Dimension Films have just sent over new information along with five new posters from their movie, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4d with ‘Aromascope’.

What the heck is that I hear you cry?! Well, it would appear to be smellovision! I’ll let the official press release do the talking below the images but essentially it’s a new way to watch a movie where the smells from the film come out into the theatre! Nuts eh!

New blood is awash in this fourth film, which I assume is a reboot of sorts to kick the series up the franchise and spawn another two films, and Jessica Alba looks at home in her role as StepMom/Secret Agent, certainly her presence will delight half of the adult audience taking their kids to see the film.

It’s standard stuff, but Rodriguez knows exactly what he’s doing with the premise of giving kids enormous weapons and very fast cars to run riot with and its right up with the most engaging of wish-fulfillment.

And there’s Ricky Gervais voicing a dog. So, a few laughs, lots of blowing up and a bit with a dog. Henslowe would have been proud.

Marissa’s world is turned upside down when the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet and she’s called back into action by the head of OSS, home of the greatest spies and where the now-defunct Spy Kids division was created.  With Armageddon quickly approaching, Rebecca and Cecil are thrust into action when they learn their boring stepmom was once a top agent and now the world’s most competitive ten year olds are forced to put their bickering aside and rely on their wits.  With a little help from a couple of very familiar Spy Kids, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara), and some mind-blowing gadgets, they just may be able to save the world and possibly bring their family together while they’re at it.

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World hits UK & US cinemas 19th August.

Although most would say that director Robert Rodriguez tends to be at his best when catering for an adult audience (taking Sin City and Desperado in preference to Shark Boy & Lava Girl or Spy Kids), his Spy Kids series has shown surprising longevity, churning good, honest, fun entertainment and turning a healthy profit against modest operating budgets.

Spy Kids 4 is his latest offering, with Jessica Alba and Jeremy Piven joining the usual returning cast members and the ubiquitous Danny Trejo. In this latest publicity still, we see Alba in a somewhat peculiar fingerless gloves/black leotard combo and Piven looking for all the world like something out of Dick Tracy or Bugsy Malone. Since the storyline involves a villain bent on stopping time, no doubt Piven’s conspicuous time-piece and anachronistic wardrobe are all very much required.
