Stephen Sommers (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Mummy) has confirmed, exclusively to The Wrap, that he will return to direct Paramount’s sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, an action-adventure based on a line of action figures produced by toy giant Hasbro that was released in 2009.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra featured a cast including Sienna Miller (The Edge of Love), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Channing Tatum (Dear John), Christopher Eccleston (Amelia), Rachel Nichols (Star Trek) and Dennis Quaid (Legion), accumulating an estimated $302M at the worldwide box office, reclaiming it’s reported $175M budget.

The film’s main cast members are reportedly contractually obligated to return for a sequel if, and now when, production moves ahead.

It now seems a certainty that a sequel will happen, despite the fact not many people were particularly enamoured by the first installment. On the bright side, knowing Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland) have penned the script, it makes the sequel sound a little more tolerable than the first.

Expect more details to be announced once the film has entered production.

Apple have released a brand new featurette which gives us a behind the scenes look at the movie based on the amazing woman who made an attempt to be the first person, male or female  to fly solo across the world. This featurette focuses on how they achieved some of the aerial shots.
