With a career that began back in 1969, Terrence Malick has become one of the best known directors in film, despite having directed just six films in the past fifty years, well known for the gaps between his films.

More recently, however, the writer-director has been beyond prolific, winning the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes with The Tree of Life, and having an untitled film starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz, and Javier Bardem currently in post-production, due out this year.

And to add to all of that, he’s also announced, and begun preliminary filming on, Lawless, which will star Ryan Gosling in the lead, alongside Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Haley Bennett, which will shoot in the autumn. And before that, he’ll be filming Knight of Cups this summer, which will also star Bale and Blanchett, as well as Isabel Lucas.

We’ve now got some more brilliant casting news to add to both Lawless and Knight of Cups, with Deadline reporting that the ever-talented Natalie Portman is joining the already impressive casts of the two films, which means that she, Bale, and Blanchett will all be starring in them both.

The films are set to be sold at the European Film Market in Berlin tomorrow, with FilmNation selling the international territories and CAA dealing the US rights. With such an established man like Malick writing and directing, and with two sets of wonderfully talented casts, hopefully they shouldn’t have too much trouble getting picked up.

On top of winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, Malick’s last film, The Tree of Life, has three Oscar nominations to its name in the Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Cinematography categories, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out at the end of the month when the Academy Awards are held on 26th February.

Portman, herself, is of course no stranger to the Oscars, having won Best Actress for her outstanding performance in Black Swan last year, and earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for 2004’s Closer, and these two projects will mark her first films since taking maternity leave after the birth of her first child last summer.

Tolkien’s original novel, followed by The Hobbit: There And Back Again next December.

We’ve seen and heard some fantastic things from the new film already, most recently including Evangeline Lilly updating us on her character, Tauriel, created especially for the film. She spoke to Yahoo Movies about her preparations for the role, with thanks to ComicBookMovie for the heads up, and in the same report, Yahoo have put out a great new picture of Martin Freeman as Bilbo, almost lost amongst the dwarves.

“The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.”

We recently saw a much darker image of Freeman this month with his faithful sword, Sting, and this new image looks similar to the first images we saw from the film, still in The Shire. Alongside Freeman, we can look forward to seeing many new and familiar faces, including Andy Serkis, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee.

The Hobbit will be released in 3D with An Unexpected Journey kicking things off on 14th December this year, followed by There and Back Again on 13th December next year. Until then, here’s the new image, which you can click to enlarge. And in case you missed it at the end of last year, you can watch the wonderful first trailer right here, as well as everything else The Hobbit-related here. If you’d like to read more about Lilly’s preparations for the role, click through over here.
We first got word way back in June last year that Evangeline Lilly had been cast in Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth in The Hobbit. When the announcement came, Jackson told us that Lilly would be playing a character created especially for the film, which is expected to develop the novel in its adaptation, spanning over two parts:

“Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.)”

Whilst doing an interview with EW for the release of Real Steel on DVD/Blu-Ray this week in the States (we’ll be getting it on 20th February here), Lilly spoke more about her character, revealing some really interesting details:

“EW: Speaking of small and little, I’d be remiss not to bring up The Hobbit. You’re playing a new character named Tauriel, who’s a Mirkwood elf, and that would lead me to believe that she is a warrior of some kind. Did you have to learn archery and swordplay?

Lilly: Yes, she is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard. She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn’t want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.

EW: So then Tauriel must be involved with the dwarves being captured…

Lilly: I think basically what you’re asking is if she’s in the film very much. She’s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding than I had expected it to be. There’s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it’s a little more pressure.”

Definitely interesting, especially the fact that she’ll be really involved in the second film in particular. Best known for her work on TV’s Lost, Real Steel last year, and that little-known Oscar winner, The Hurt Locker, Lilly is a fantastic actress, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her in this role, not least because it’s been entirely created for the film.

Time for a bit of 100% good old-fashioned guess-work: It’s looking as though she’ll be playing the female lead in the second film, which makes me wonder if her role will also be a romantic interest. Jackson clearly stated that she’s not a romantic connection to Legolas, but I’d quietly place a small wager (which I would adamantly deny if proven wrong when the films are released) on her being involved somehow with Luke Evans’ character, Bard the Grim, also known as Bard the Bowman.

His character is being likened to that of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, and when the announcement of his involvement came (at the same time as Lilly’s), it was said that he’d be playing a larger role in the second film. So, I could be adding two and two to make five, but it sounds as though there could be a similar relationship to Aragon and Arwen in Tauriel and Bard. Either way, we’ll have to wait until at least December this year, if not December next year with the second part, to find out if I’m right.

Along with Lilly and Evans, the fantastic cast includes both new and familiar faces in the forms of Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee.

The first part, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be with us on 14th December this year, followed by the second, The Hobbit: There And Back Again, on 13th December next year. If you’ve missed any of our coverage of the films so far, you can catch up on it all right here. I’d particularly recommend the rather brilliant first trailer that Jackson treated us to for Christmas last month.

Just before Christmas, we were given an excellent new look at the film when the first trailer hit the web, and it was pretty brilliant. Fans of the original The Lord of the Rings will not be disappointed.

We’ve now got a great new image from the film to share with you, courtesy of Hero Complex via Collider, and it shows Martin Freeman as the young Bilbo Baggins looking pretty rough around the edges and somewhat world-weary, with one hand clasped around his sword, Sting.

As you’re no doubt already aware, The Hobbit will be released in two parts and in 3D, first with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and then The Hobbit: There And Back Again. The cast that Jackson has lined up is rather fantastic too, with many familiar faces as well as plenty of new ones joining the cast. Alongside Freeman, we can look forward to seeing Andy Serkis, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee.

(*Potential plot spoiler coming up; this is your warning!*) It’s been a long time since I read The Hobbit, so alas I can’t quite place the new image in the plot of the film myself. Freeman looks rather cobwebby though, so with a bit of help from Wikipedia…

“Great Spiders:

The Hobbit describes a colony of sapient and over-sized spiders in the northern parts of Mirkwood at the end of the Third Age. The Elves of Thranduil’s realm tried unsuccessfully to exterminate them. During the events of the book, Thorin’s company was captured by spiders and enmeshed in webs; however, Bilbo Baggins managed to free them with the aid of his sword Sting and his magic ring.”

That sounds about right to me. Essentially, expect this scene to be pretty awesome. (Small aside: I really like Richard Armitage for the role of Thorin. I think he’s going to be great in it.)

An Unexpected Journey will be with us in just under a year on 14th December, followed a year later by There And Back Again on 13th December, 2013. Without further ado, here’s the great new image of Freeman as Bilbo. As usual, click to enlarge and take in all the tiny details.

After gaps of twenty, seven and then six years between Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The New World and The Tree of Life, he has suddenly become urgent in his development and scheduling of new projects.

First up will apparently be Lawless, with no less impressive a cast than Christian Bale (The Prestige, The Dark Knight), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth, The Lord of the Rings), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Ryan Gosling (Drive, Blue Valentine). After that, apparently Malick will take the unprecedented step of rolling straight into his next project, Knight of Cups, which will feature Bale and Blanchett again, along with Isabel Lucas, who is due on our screens this month in Tarsem Singh’s Immortals.

There is no word on plots for either films, but given the critical praise generally heaped on his work, most will tend to enthusiastically greet news of new projects from Malick. Lest we forget, on top of both of those new projects, Malick already has another entire film in his locker, which remains untitled, but which was filmed in Oklahoma with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz. No word on when that one might see the light of day, though with Knight of Cups (that title will have to go, surely?) and Lawless both slated to shoot in 2012, you would think he would want to see the already completed project released before shifting his focus elsewhere.

More as we get it. Source-wise, this one’s down to Collider.

We got the third video diary for Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth back in July, and now he’s given us the fourth instalment through his Facebook page, because he’s pretty awesome like that.

In case you’ve missed them, you can catch up on all the earlier video diaries from The Hobbit and everything else surrounding the project right here.

This latest production video predominantly looks at the 3D filming aspect of the project, and it’s really interesting, with Jackson and the filming crew giving us a very insightful view of how they’re making this film.

According to the video, they’ve got 48 Red Epic cameras, each with its own individual name, which is pretty ridiculously awesome. Each of those cameras has a price tag of no less than $10,000, so if they were all retail price (naturally, they’re not going to be), that’s half a million dollars just on those cameras right there! And they visually show us how much their cameras just utterly out-do our 1080 TV screens and monitors, just to make us feel good about ourselves.

Ain’t It Cool News have also been visiting the set of the film, and have got some great photos of Bilbo and Jackson in Bag End, and if you want to read their report of the set visit, then you can go ahead and click over here.

As I’m sure you’re already aware, the two-parter has a pretty fantastic cast, including Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee.

At the end of the video, Jackson tells us that they’re about to move on to shooting on location, and that the next video he brings us will be from wherever they’re shooting in a few months’ time – so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that, because it will undoubtedly be filled with amazing landscapes.

The Hobbit will be coming to us in two parts. The first, An Unexpected Journey, will be hitting cinemas at the end of next year on 14th December; and the second, There And Back Again, will be back a year later on 13th December, 2013. As you can imagine, it’s going to be awesome. Without further ado, here’s the brilliant new production video diary, followed by a few photos from the set, which you can click to enlarge. And if you want to see the video in glorious HD, then you can head over to Jackson’s Facebook page here.

Leonardo DiCaprio came of age as a star in the late nineties and his collaboration in the first decade of the twenty-first century with Martin Scorsese allowed the director to get his money to make three films together, the second of which is out this week on Blu-ray.

The Aviator is an epic telling of the rich story of the influential businessman and aviator Howard Hughes with his ambition and talents as a man of new ideas perilously coupled with his misplaced trust and his, initially, latent paranoia. His influence and invention in the field of aviation at a time when dominance of the sky was still up in the air and post-war corporate interests began to gather ominously over the United State government makes for a compelling biopic thanks to an intriging central performance and some dizzing visual flights of fancy from Scorsese.

DiCaprio’s performance takes a while to convince, but as his Hughes spirals from boundless, horizon-seeking energy to disgraced recluse and back again DiCaprio disappears into the role and is given every opportunity by Scorsese’s camera and John Logan’s script to drive this film forward. Hughes’ OCD plays a significant part in the proceedings and provides an anchor to the man’s lofty ambitions, though it’s a little too overwrought in some scenes when Scorsese’s trust in the audience leaves him.

The director’s obvious love for Hughes shines through from the first sequence on his making of Hell’s Angels, the astronomically expensive feature film, and the opulent sway of Hollywood in the late twenties and thirties is beautifully rendered in the production design, something which is shown off particularly well with this Blu-ray release. Mention must be made of the flight sequences which are breathaking and, thankfully, free from the weightless CGI fests of similar fare. Visually this film is something special.

Cate Blanchett accomplishes the near-impossible in crafting a Katherine Hepburn that is at once completely recognisable and yet strikingly unique, something which the film does well to achieve as the casting of Gwen Stefani, Jude Law and Kate Beckinsale as three of the Hollywood greats flies dangerously close to stunt casting. Alec Baldwin once again proves that in the right hands he can tone down the self parody to, just as he would do a few years later in his work with Scorsese in The Departed, give a solid performance.

This new Blu-ray contains everything from the original DVD release with nothing new to offer those who have already bought the film however the quality of the transfer is wonderful, with the blue rolling hills of Hollywood giving way to the lush green gardens of the Hepburn residence and the scope of the storytelling given a visual polishing to be proud of.

“I just missed your heart” are the first and last words uttered in this marvellous adventure thriller by Director Joe Wright. See?…you’re interested already.

Hanna is a 16-year old killing machine played with just the right amount of wonderment and naivety by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.

Hanna has been brought up in the wild woods of North Finland singlehandedly by her widowed Father Erik (Eric Bana) who, as an ex-CIA agent who trains her in martial arts and armed combat, transforms her into the perfect assassin. At the same time her home education all seems to come from encyclopedias and traditional fairy tales. In her secluded life this is all normal as she has never had any physical contact outside of her homeland.

Hanna knows that her training has been leading up to one moment, a moment soon approaching when she will be unleashed into the real world to exact revenge on the ‘wicked witch’ responsible for her Mother’s death.
The Witch in question is Marissa Viegler (Cate Blanchett) a ruthless CIA operative who once worked with Erik and has been obsessively searching for him and his daughter. On completion of Hanna’s mission Erik arranges to rendezvous with her in Berlin at a spooky abandoned fairy tale theme park, very Grimm (sorry). Hanna makes her way there via Morocco by hitching a lift with a new age English family in their hippy VW Dormobile. Saoirse Ronan’s acting talents really shine here as this is Hanna’s first experience with a real life family.

She may just as well be from another planet as she has no point of reference to compare them with and she exudes a child like quality but at the same time could snap your neck like a twig. The Mother and Father (Olivia Williams and Jason Flemyng) are very liberal parents but show concern that Hanna is travelling around the world on her own. Hanna strikes up a touching relationship with their daughter Sophie (Jessica Barden, last seen upstaging Gemma Arterton in Tamara Drewe) who teaches Hanna about life through her knowledge of ‘Entertainment Now’ and ‘Hello’ magazine.

The chase scenes and fight sequences are superbly choreographed with brutal realism rather than the usual overused slo-mo bullet time acrobatics. Hot on Hanna’s trail is rogue executioner Isaacs hired by Marissa through unofficial channels. Isaacs is played by English actor Tom Hollander as you’ve never seen him before, complete with bleached hair and a Nazi accent and an awful eighties fashion sense. The action is enhanced with a thumping good Chemical Brothers soundtrack as well.

It’s always good to see the versatile Eric Bana but I feel that he was slightly under used here and he almost plays the same angst ridden character straight from the film Munich. I find it amazing that Joe Wright has only ever made three other movies prior to Hanna, Pride & Prejudice (2005), nominated for 4 Oscars, Atonement (2007), winning an Oscar for best original score and The Soloist (2009). Wright also throws in a thumping good Chemical Brothers soundtrack.

Although I enjoyed the film it seemed to end all too soon and I felt that there were one or two things left unexplained. Perhaps part of the reason may have been because Universal changed the certification from the original 15 to a 12A? Having said all that I still put this down as my film of the year so far.

I give it an ‘edge of the seat’ ****~ (4/5)

Take Two.

I didn’t warm to this film at all. There was an emotional weight to Joe Wright’s work in Atonement, most of which came through from Ian McEwan’s stunning novel but there is nothing like the connection necessary to give the film its power. What we have here is a by the numbers revenge thriller with some great performances lost in a film within a narrative that doesn’t deviate from expectations. A refusal to defy conventions shouldn’t count against the film however when it quickly becomes clear that Hanna will always escape, always find her mark it becomes a passive experience. The soundtrack is, as Mark says, is something special but I found myself becoming distracted by it, just as I did with Tron: Legacy, and the action on screen was not nearly as exciting. I’m a fan of Joe Wright’s films, his anemic Pride & Prejudice aside, but for all the technical virtuosity on display here there was nothing to keep me involved.

For anybody who hasn’t seen the movie yet, you can take a peek at Adam’s review. We picked his brains from here to Hollywood but the fun didn’t stop there… During the roundtable with The Hangover star it became apparent to us all that Cooper is a delightfully knowledgeable film buff! Swoon.

On Limitless:

Audiences most popularly know you as ‘Phil from the Hangover,’ has it been refreshing playing and promoting a completely different character like Eddie Morra?

I love Phil from the Hangover and I love Eddie too so it was nice to be cast in a different genre of movie for sure and where the burden of the storytelling was really on my shoulders; I loved that challenge. Also being able to play a guy who goes through such a transformation, physically and emotionally. But I don’t mind being associated with the Hangover, I’m honoured to be a part of it.

Do you think Eddie’s a good guy?

I do. I don’t think that he is malicious in anyway at all. Certainly we don’t know what his objective is on the drug. It’s not to make money that’s for sure. We don’t ever really know what it is.

He becomes very powerful and focused when he takes NZT, do you think power always corrupts or does Eddie escape that?

I don’t think he escapes it. That’s sort of the point of the movie that it’s a treacherous road. That’s the main thrust if there’s any particular theme to the movie. It’s about, not the price of power but the challenges of power.

Would you say there’s an undercurrent on how men and women deal with failure and success?

I think that calls along the line of the power question in how you deal with a lack of power or alternatively a surplus of power?

If you could take NZT and it were risk-free, would you?

Yeah, I’d probably take it both ways!

We all wonder if the real life superstars have some sort of pill for success, if there is a secret formula, what do you think it is, purely hard work or does luck play a role as well?

In terms of being successful as an actor I think luck plays a huge role! It’s like what Oprah said, although maybe she echoed somebody else, but she said ‘luck is preparation meets opportunity.’ That’s pretty true. I know that I certainly went to Grad school with guys who were tremendously talented as actors! I remember certain opportunities that we would all have but the way some people deal with that is by sabotaging themselves. It’s interesting; luck plays a huge role. But it’s impossible, I think, to do anything for any duration if you don’t work hard. Definitely as an actor, from my experience I don’t know how you could do it without working hard.

You’re also a producer on the film, how did the project come to you?

I ran to it! It was out there and I read it and I loved it. Then I tried to get a meeting with Neil Burger who had just signed on to direct it. It had been around for years – Leslie Dixon wrote it in 2007, I think or 2008 – and Heath Ledger was going to take it on at one point and then Shia LeBeouf. So it had been around for a while and I just went for it.

How was it balancing your role as an actor and a producer on the film?

It was actually a wonderful marriage because basically all that credit does is allow you to participate without apologizing! Instead of saying, ‘I’m sorry…but what about this?’

If you could use NZT to perfect any talent or language, what would it be?

German. I’d love to learn German. You remember the movie A Fish Called Wanda? Where John Cleese just loves German? That’s like me!

During the movie Eddie rockets through this vast emotional spectrum, were there any particularly interesting scenes for you to get into?

The scene where he finds the dead body. We were very keen to make it feel real. So often in the movies you see those scenes and they’re not right. I remember when I was a kid and my parents would ask me to turn the lights off before I come upstairs. There was one light in the living room and I would always turn it off and from the minute I turned it off until I’d run up the stairs I wouldn’t stop screaming because I thought I would scare away any of the ghosts. So when we were doing that scene and he hears something in the background and he just starts yelling. That just sort of happened and it felt like a real thing that Eddie would do as opposed to a typical ‘I find a dead body, I call the cops’ scenario if somebody’s not used to that world. That was a scene I found really fulfilling because we really made to make it different and make it like if a regular guy were to walk into a room and see a dead body, like what the fuck would you do?

[SPOILER:]

Which ending for the film did you prefer?

The one that’s in the movie. For sure. I feel like the ending that we chose for the movie was more ambiguous for the viewer in terms of: is he on the drug/is he off the drug? Was he lying to Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro) or not? Because it could be just as dark an ending as the alternate if he’s lying to Carl. That whole thing was a ruse in a way. He’s not off the drug, he’s still taking the drug and he doesn’t know what the hell he’s going to do. He claims, ‘look I’m off it but I’ve retained some of the power.’ We departed from the ending in the book before I came aboard. Leslie Dixon’s script chose a different way to go.

On The Crow, Hyperion and Paradise Lost:

How far down the road are you with the remake of The Crow?

I’m not sure where we are with that. I mean, it makes tracks on the internet but I’m really not sure.

What about Hyperion?

We are just finishing the deal to write that so that’s going ahead. If you haven’t read the books then they’re fantastic. Oh my God! Ideally we’d like to do them all but we’re actually combining them because it’s kind of a mammoth undertaking, these four books, to consolidate and turn them into script form. The first one, we’re going to write two scripts, so the first is kind of a combination of Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion and Endymion, which is three out of the four, and then we’ll see where that takes us in terms of the second one.

Are you still keen to direct it?

It’s a dream! But that’s like saying you want your first movie to be Avatar! I’d have to have NZT and give it to the studio head in order for them to let me direct that movie.

How far a long are you with Paradise Lost?

We just finished, hang on, I’ll show you. [Cooper takes out his Blackberry to show us a photo for him wearing a skintight black suit covered in sensors] It’s going to be motion capture and I had never done anything like that! We’ve been doing these tests all this week. So yeah, we’re still shooting, I hope so anyway! (laughs) That would suck if I went through all that and we don’t shoot it! Yeah, it’s full on. That was our second day and we were just testing out the different rigs and doing some preliminary work in terms of a few scenes. We did one where Lucifer lands and talks to his minions and it’s really exciting. We’ll start shooting in January I think.

How do you feel about playing the biggest baddy there ever was?

Oh man, I can’t wait. I can’t believe I am doing it! I remember on the A-Team tour we were here actually, in London, and I had met Ralph Fiennes; I’d never met him before but he’s a friend of Liam’s [Neeson]. I remember we were just talking and he asked what I wanted to do and I said it’s crazy, there’s this project Paradise Lost and all I really want to do is play the devil. I remember he said to me, ‘You’re going to do it.’ And the way he said it to me, you know when somebody says something and it seems so real, like they know something, and I thought, ‘Great, yeah.’ But you never know until you’re shooting. I mean I say it now and then bam, Shia Lebeouf is Lucifer in a month! (laughs) But we’re all scheduled, with Alex Proyas, who is wonderful! He did the original Crow movie, and Dark City, I don’t know if any of you saw it but it was fantastic.

On The Hangover:

You’ve played a huge variety of roles from the cool suave guy to the jerk in Wedding Crashers, was there any character that stood out for you, one you’d go back and do again?

Well, Phil wasn’t easy at all. The guy in the Hangover. In fact I was probably had the most trepidations about that character more than anyone I’ve played. Just because I didn’t think I could pull it off. He’s such a commander and chief and is so secure with himself and so quick-witted. He’s just cool, to me he’s like the coolest guy in the world. And he’s got this moral philosophy which is just so bizarre! He’s got to run the show in a lot of ways and so when Todd [Phillips] cast me I was worried that I wasn’t going to be able to pull it off. But now I feel we’ve created a guy that, I mean the second film, it was so effortless to play Phil and I love him so much that I would do five Hangovers just to play him because I really do love that character! And he’s changing for example in the second movie you saw his vulnerability with Alan and I just really love that guy.

Are there any plans for further Hangover adventures or is it too soon to tell?

No plans but I hope there is. I think there should be a trilogy to close it all up. Done.

On Directing and the Future:

You’re doing a lot behind the camera then, do you think one day you’ll move on from acting completely into directing and producing?

Just a director. I’d love to direct. Yes, I’d retire absolutely.

Who are your top directors then, whose footsteps do you aspire to follow in?

Oh there’s so many! Jonathan Glazer, Paul Thomas Anderson and Scorsese and Spielberg. Catherine Bigelow’s great. Julian Schnabel’s fantastic, Guillermo Del Toro’s great. I don’t have this idea of making just David Leen movies or something like that.

If your long-term aim is to duck out of acting and move into directing what’s going to be your King Lear to crown your acting career?

I think the reason why I imagine giving up acting is because I would love directing so much that I would probably then only want to direct. That’s why that would happen I think if my hunch is right about how much I would love directing. I don’t really have a part in mind it’s more really about working with directors. That’s the motivation for me, to be on a Jonathan Glazer or Paul Thomas Anderson or Wes Anderson set; that’s the goal for me. It may change and it may become a role but at the moment it’s that.

Have you got any projects lined up with any of those directors?

None! (laughs) Honestly, I’ve been trying to just sit down with Jonathan Glazer for about 8 years! I’m not kidding, I even went to high school with his agent and I’m like, ‘Hey man, is there any way I can get a meeting’ and he’s all shrug, ‘I dunno.’ So maybe one day.

Are there any actors you aspire to work with in the same way?

Oh well, Daniel Day Lewis for sure! Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet. There’s so many, Tom Hardy, I’d love to work with Tom Hardy, I think he’s incredible! I think Michael Fassbender’s incredible and Carey Mulligan is great, there’s a lot of young actors that are really good and who I’d love to work with.

After giving us a second look at the production of The Hobbit less than two weeks ago, Peter Jackson’s now released the third instalment of the video diary from the two-part film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again.

Just like the first two, Jackson has released this third video via his own Facebook page. He apologises that The Hobbit won’t be coming to this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend, but says that it’s more than likely they’ll be there this time next year.

He explained his decision by saying,

“New Line and Warner Bros were very happy to support a presentation, but I declined, simply because I felt it was too early. There’s so much more of the films still to shoot. I just wanted to get that out there, because I’ve seen various references to the possibility of something Hobbity at Comic Con. Hate to disappoint anyone. But something tells me we will be there in force next year.”

And as a sort of consolation, we’ve got the third production video diary to enjoy. It’s made up of footage taken from the first of the three blocks of shooting being done for this film, and it opens and closes with Peter Jackson wandering around Pinewood Studios here in the UK, which suggests that filming in the second and/or third blocks could well be done here in our own backyard.

Through the course of the video, we get to see some great footage of Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis as Bilbo and Gollum on set in a cave. We also get to see Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, and Sir Ian McKellen in costume as the brilliant Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf. Brilliant stuff. And be sure to watch until the end to get a great last line from Christopher Lee.

We’ve been getting so many photos lately of all of the dwarves, we now get to see them all in and out of costume, talking about their favourite memories from the first shooting block. And there’s a really nice moment near the end, talking to Richard Armitage, who plays Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Company of Dwarves, and he tells us that one of his favourite moments so far was when they were all lined up together wearing their gear, taking it all in. As he says in the video, it’s spine-tingling material watching it happen, being taken back to Middle-earth.

At just under a quarter of an hour, these video diaries might seem like they’re quite long, but you lose yourself in them as soon as they start, and this one’s definitely a must-watch for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. One of the highlights for me has got to be the dwarf Bombur’s ridiculous air guitar/drum rendition of one of Tolkien’s songs from the novel. We also get a nice shot of John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings, visiting the set – just visiting – whilst the Company of Dwarves are sitting round the table in Bag End.

Jackson writes on his Facebook page,

“I’ve been on the go since wrapping the first shooting block, but I’m about to settle down and get into the much delayed 20 Questions. I’ve a few half-written and will get those done very, very soon! I promise!”

So we can expect more updates to come from him in the near future, and you can be sure we’ll keep you up to date on that and everything else when it comes. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due out on 14th December, 2012, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again is due out a year later on 13th December, 2013, with both films being released in 3D. And without further ado, here is the latest video diary. If you’d like to watch it in beautiful HD, then you can do so here.

Back in April, Peter Jackson treated us to a behind-the-scenes look from the set of The Hobbit, showing us some of the behind-the-scenes production processes from the upcoming two-part film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again.

Now Jackson has released a brilliant second blog from the set of the film via his Facebook page.

In the video, Jackson tells us with these kind of big-scale films, he prefers to split the shooting up into separate blocks, which both gives cast and crew a chance to take a breath and allows some work to be done on the CGI and editing whilst everyone else is on break. We see in the blog the tail-end of the first of these three blocks, and it begins with Jackson in the director’s chair with his 3D glasses on the last day of production of block one giving two pretty exciting directions:

“Sky darkens. And… flames!”

Already, in just four words, that sounds pretty epic to me. We also see Andy Serkis at work as second unit director, and he looks quite at home. The second block of shooting begins on 5th September later this year, and whilst the cast and some of the crew are starting their breaks, the blog then takes us out with Jackson and some of the crew scouting locations around New Zealand and returning to see the ones that they liked and are hoping to use for the film.

Quite simply, some of these locations look absolutely beautiful. The helicopter shots, even with a handheld camera, are stunning, and Jackson assures us those that thought we saw all of New Zealand in The Lord of the Rings that the country has so much more scenery to offer. He also tells us that we may well be able to look forward to another video blog update before shooting starts up again in September, so you can be sure that you’ll bring you that as and when we get it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due out on 14th December, 2012, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again is due out a year later on 13th December, 2013, with both films being released in 3D. This video blog is more than enough to get you excited for the return to Middle-earth. If you want to watch it stunning HD quality, then click here.

Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her widowed father Erik (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of North Finland. Erik has taught Hanna to hunt, put her through extreme self-defence workouts, and home-schooled her with only an encyclopaedia and a book of fairy tales. Hanna has been living a life unlike any other teenager; her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. But out in the world there is unfinished business for Hanna’s family, and it is with a combination of pride and apprehension that Erik realizes his daughter can no longer be held back.

This turning point in Hanna’s adolescence is a sharp one; she is separated from Erik and embarks on the mission that she was always destined for. Before she and her father can reunite as planned in Berlin, Hanna is captured by agents dispatched by ruthless intelligence operative Marissa Wiegler (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett). Marissa, a career agent, has long been harbouring secrets that tie her to Hanna and Erik.

Detained for observation and held beneath the Moroccan desert, Hanna soon turns the tables on her captors. Her daring escape to above-ground thrusts her into an unfamiliar landscape and world which she must quickly learn to comprehend and navigate. Marissa secretly sends a team of agents after Hanna, and joins the deadly pursuit herself. As Hanna journeys across Europe and nears her ultimate target, she faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

You may not live to regret it!

16-year-old Saoirse Ronan (reunited with her Atonement director) is the titular heroine – a fierce, highly intelligent and combat-savvy teenager who has been raised from a baby by her father (Eric Bana) free from the outside world, in the snowy, desolate wilderness of Finland. Having been trained up to be the perfect assassin (complete with multi-lingual and survivalist skills), she embarks on a mission (initiated by Bana) to track down and kill the corrupt CIA operative (Cate Blancett) who was behind their original exile.

Upon escaping from the clutches of the CIA, she finds herself travelling through a number of countries and locations, bringing her into contact with an outside world she has never experienced before. This proves to be an alluring and mysterious place for teenager, and she battles to cope with her freedom, whilst avoiding capture from a band of mercenaries, as she makes her way to rendezvous with her father in Germany.

Hanna represents a real departure for director Joe Wright, who until now, has been associated with more serious and restrained dramas, like the aforementioned 2007 Ian McEwan adaptation and last year’s film version of the real-life exploits of a schizophrenic, homeless cello prodigy in The Soloist. Thankfully, he is more than adequate at hopping between different genres as the film successfully illustrates, and he handles the action with the same assurance he invests in the more intimate, character-based scenes. The film has a number of thrillingly-choreographed chase and fight sequences – all scored to a pulsating soundtrack by dance duo The Chemical Brothers. Wright is even able to bring a fresh and fascinating approach to how action is traditionally staged on the screen. Hanna’s escape from a seemingly impenetrable CIA holding facility is a fantastic example of this, where the distinctive set design and a bold use of lighting and disorientating camerawork really help to create a unique feel to the film. On the strength of all this, it wouldn’t be surprising if the makers of the Bond franchise weren’t knocking on the director’s door right now.

He also shows the same confidence in eliciting fine performances out of his cast. Ronan is fantastic as the sweet, yet deadly killing machine and has a real otherworldly presence about her. The fish-out-of-water escapades she finds herself in as she adjusts to what is an extremely strange and alien environment for her, are sometimes very humorous and ultimately, quite touching, particularly when she ends up hitching a ride with a couple of liberal, new-age-y English tourists (played by Jason Flemyng and Olivia Williams) and their two child – one of whom is a typical bratty teenage girl and similar age to Hanna, whom she manages to strike up a sadly short-lived bond with. Bana too is very strong here, and we see both his nurturing side and that killer instinct he has impressed upon his daughter which is very much evident during another superbly-staged fight, set in an underground car park, where the enemy seem to appear from out of nowhere. Blancett as the icy, remorseless spy operative gives another classy performance and he thoroughly unsympathetic and evil throughout.

Scratch beneath the surface here, and there isn’t really too much depth to the film (it certainly doesn’t have any of the emotional weight of Wright’s previous features) but if you’re looking for an action-packed, stylishly-shoot piece of escapism, you can’t really go wrong with Hanna.

***½~ (3.5/5)

Win an iPad 2 with Hanna and HeyUGuys – Click here for all the details and look below for Question 1:
