James Franco has been making some puzzling decisions recently and by decisions I mean one in particular. Earlier this year he signed up to work with Harmony Korine who amongst other things wrote and directed the all too literally titled Trash Humpers, a film in which men in prosthetic old man masks hump trash in various positions and locales. Why? Because it’s art you idiots.

Attention grabbing cine-sewage aside however Franco may be following up a dubious decision with a film that’s guaranteed to be cinematic gold. For years now studios have been trying to get an adaptation of bestseller The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists into production and it seems like it’s finally happening.

The book (based on the author’s real life investigation) centres around Neil Strauss and his experiences inside a group of pickup artists as he learns the tricks of the trade from mentor Mystery. Once he completes his ‘training’ he then becomes a teacher of ‘The Game’ with a group of rotating students in a Sunset Strip mansion. During the course of his adventure the Rolling Stone journalist documents his interactions with Britney Spears and Courtney Love who actually moves into the mansion to learn some pickup techniques.

Franco is now in talks to play Mystery and it’s a character just crying out for a heap of awesomely obnoxious and entertaining characterisation. Currently still in the early stages and with the script being written by David Levien and Brian Koppleman, The Game could be heading to a cinema near you at some point in the not-so-distant future.

Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty has proved a divisive film in its run across the festival circuit and it finally comes to UK cinemas this weekend.

Lisa spoke to the star of the film Emily Browning as well as the film’s director, you can find those interviews here and here, but our friends at Upbeat also had the chance to sit down with the two and discuss the controversial film.

If cute penguins are your bag then you’ll be in furry bird heaven with the latest Happy Feet film and there’s a new trailer out to further entice and tease.

It’s solid family friendly fare from the looks of it and where else, other than in the world of CG anthropomorphic animation, could you find a cast which includes Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Pink and Elijah Wood?

Yahoo had this new trailer and this handy synopsis which proved of great interest to me, and may well do to you.

Mumble, The Master of Tap, has a problem because his tiny son, Erik, is choreo-phobic. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven — a penguin who can fly! Mumble has no hope of competing with this charismatic new role model. But things get worse when the world is shaken by powerful forces. Erik learns of his father’s “guts and grit” as Mumble brings together the penguin nations and all manner of fabulous creatures — from tiny Krill to giant Elephant Seals — to put things right.

Christian Bale is considering taking on the role of the main villain in the Hollywood remake of Oldboy, according to a Variety report.

Oldboy, which has become somewhat of a cult sensation and critical darling since its release in 2003, is the second film in Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance trilogy (the first being Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and the third being Lady Vengeance).

What was originally set to be a Stephen Spielberg project (with Will Smith taking on the lead role) is now confirmed as being directed by Spike Lee. Spielberg’s film supposedly would have been a remake of the original, and very different, manga comic whereas Lee’s picture will simply attempt to remake the film.

Bale is meanwhile finishing up Dark Knight Rises amidst other rumours he is considering roles in Clint Eastwood’s remake of A Star Is Born, Michael Mann’s Gold and Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic, Noah.

With Oldboy a lot of us will probably bemoan the state of the movie world where yet another great foreign film is being remade in the US but with initial knowledge of Lee’s involvement this remake became interesting. Now that Bale is potentially involved, I believe they have our attention.

Right, then, first things first, Try to Remain Calm! We’ve got something exciting this Saturday evening as we’ve just sent us over some rather nice casting news along with a rather fabulous first poster and synopsis for a new movie, UFO.

The film comes from the came team behind How to Stop Being a Loser (trailer here) and Airborne (trailer here) which is currently in post production and stars Mark Hamill (All our coverage here). UFO is currently shooting in Derbyshire in the UK and we’re told that it’s a mix between Independence Day and Monsters told from the point of view of Signs! Sounds intriguing!

The film’s principle lead is American actress, Bianca Bree and this will be her first major movie. From what we’ve heard she’s one to watch out for as we have it on good authority that she’s going to be rather a big star in the making. She’ll be joined by Sean Brosnan who has a rather famous dad in the form of Pierce Brosnan, Simon Phillips who we’ve previously seen in the ‘Jack’ series of movies, Andrew Shim who you’ll know from This is England and more recently Airborne, Jazz Lintott (Airborne/The new recruit on The Real Hustle), Peter Barratt (Jack Falls/Airborne), Forbes KB (Jack Falls/Airborne) and another newcomer Maya Grant who won her role after an extensive casting call. Last and by no means least we have a cameo from the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme!

This is the casting for now. We’re told that there are more names to be announced but this should get you excited. We’ll obviously bring you any more developments as we hear them.

The script comes from Dominic Burns (How to Stop Being a Loser, Airborne,) who is also directing UFO. Andy Thompson, Tim Major, Dominic Burns and Alain Wildberger act as Producers. But with no way of discovering any information and no advice on what to do, the atmosphere quickly turns edgy.

Two nights later they are awoken in the dead of night by what seems like a violent earthquake, strange lights are spotted shining down from high above outside, something is flying over the house, not just the house, the entire neighbourhood, something huge. A city size UFO, finally settles, hovering in the distance above the nearest city.

What now? Are they going to attack? Have they already attacked? Are the power cuts an accidental side effect the UFO isn’t aware of? How quickly will society deteriorate and turn into survival of the fittest? What would you do to survive, to ensure the survival of those you love?

The Dark Knight Rises, one of the most highly anticipated movies (at this point) of all time is released next year. Director Christopher Nolan is, by his very nature, a very secretive filmmaker. He likes to reveal as little as possible about his projects, which leaves his fans desperate for the barest snippets of information.

So when the first piece of major viral marketing for the movie was released, the Internet went into meltdown. In keeping with the marketing we have seen previously in Nolan’s Batman series, it was a bit of a game. A website was set-up with the name of The Fire Rises and featured a black page with chanting in the background.

Now, I have no idea how long the team behind this idea were expecting it to take for someone to solve, but it was mere minutes. Some bright spark ran the chanting through a visualiser, which revealed a hashtag, #thefirerises. This lead to a Twitter account called @thefirerises, and a process by which you could use the hashtag to reveal the first image from the forthcoming The Dark Knight Rises. We were treated to our first look at Bane, as played by Tom Hardy, and it was a pretty significant look, showing much of his facial apparatus and costume.

Clever stuff, and no doubt only the first salvo in a viral marketing war to be raged upon the internet community. My problem with these events is the timing. The Dark Knight is released in July 2012 – a full 14 months away. It is obviously important from a studio’s perspective to get people excited for a film, but the problem is, in this case, they are not trying to get people excited for The Dark Knight Rises, they are trying to keep them excited, and this is a level they are going to struggle to sustain.

Think about it. When did the excitement start? For some, it started the minute they walked out of the theatres after watching The Dark Knight. We have of course had Inception since then, so for many others it will have been the announcements of the project, and confirmation that Nolan would be directing it. Then came the casting rumours, the reveal of the movie’s name, and then the first solid casting confirmations. More rumours would follow, then more casting. Character names began to be revealed, and speculation was cut back once the main characters had all been announced. This process took place over the course of a year.

So excitement has been building for a long time. the problem is, once all these details have been confirmed, the long shooting period begins, and with a secretive Director like Nolan, there is very little information to come from the process. So after getting the fans all excited with character and cast information, Warner Bros were rightly concerned that it would all be pointless, as things went pretty quiet for the next 12 months.

To counteract this, we were given our first visual clue from the movie, even though some cast names are even now only just being revealed. To release this kind of marketing so quickly into the movie’s production smacks of desperation. Unfortunately, it gets worse. Rumour has it the first trailer for The Dark Knight Rises will be attached to Warner’s other tent-pole franchise, the final Harry Potter film. A trailer, just 3 months into production? It will obviously be merely a teaser, as there will clearly be precious little footage to cut from, so you have to question what the point is?

There is a danger, in these circumstances, of escalation. You release a picture, then a trailer, and there is still twelve months before the film’s release. What do you offer next? There is no way, after this effort has been expended to keep up audience anticipation that things will go dark, so to speak. So there is a very real danger that more puzzles will be offered, and solved, and more precious information will be released. Now, the internet community is pretty smart, and will jump on every tidbit they can find, to try and extrapolate how what is being revealed fits into the Batman continuity, and subsequently the upcoming film. The marketing wizards may think they are being clever, but there will always be someone more clever on the outside, and there is a real danger of something big slipping out.

In this new age of social networking and millions of blogs, with the best will in the world it is impossible to stay spoiler free. Remember, of course, that Nolan himself is probably against all this information being released, and there is always a possibility that if too much information is gleaned by the public it could be a distraction to Nolan from the task at hand. Nolan is pretty powerful nowadays, but the studios will always believe they know best, and this could give rise to some inner conflicts.

I may, of course, be over analysing it all far too much. Only time will tell what the PR gurus have in store, if anything, for us over the next few months. Fans will see the recently released image and teaser trailer, if there is one, as just reward for their continued interest and commitment, and by no means do I think it isn’t deserved. I just hope the right level of caution is exercised by all involved, as it would be a damn shame if we all go into Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film knowing just that little bit too much.

The filmmaker’s work always involves some twists and turns, making it more of a risk with his pictures than with many others. The biggest laugh of it all is that such intense marketing isn’t even necessary. The Dark Knight broke box office records, and when he Rises he may well break more. I will, of course, try and avoid spoilers as much as possible, and my biggest hope is that The Dark Knight Rises, when it finally does hit our screens, is something truly special to behold.

Emily Browning’s career transition from her charming and acerbic turn in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events through Zack Snyder’s Baby Doll in Sucker Punch will find its next touchstone with Julia Leigh’s dark sex drama Sleeping Beauty, a trailer for which has just appeared.

It was back in February 2010 when we reported Browning’s involvement in the film which is the depressing tale of a student falling in prostitution and becoming the Sleeping Beauty of the title which has the victim lying, drugged in a bed awaiting the series of men to visit her, knowing in her drugged state that she won’t remember a thing about it in the morning.

It’s a terrible premise and the fact that the trailer looks bleak and beautiful gives me the surety that Leigh has the confidence to bring this story, adapted from her own novel, to the screen.

The film will be competing in Cannes this year and we await its distribution details to be revealed.

The last time we glimpsed the shenanigans on the set of the third Men in Black film we saw newcomer Emma Thompson donning the last suit she’ll ever wear, now we have a look at one of the main stars of the film – Josh Brolin as the younger incarnation of Tommy Lee Jones.

We know that the plot surrounds Will Smith’s Agent J going back in time to visit his counterpart Agent K (Brolin) for some very important reason, and Alice Eve’s Agent Oh, who is played in the present by Emma Thompson.

Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger are also joining in the fun and were hoping that Barry Sonnenfeld has managed to end up with a decent script this time – I’d like it to involve going back in time to prevent the second Men in Black film from being made. Which probably won’t happen.

Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem (Biutiful) is close to securing a deal to co-star in Universal Pictures’ feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s mammoth 7-novel series The Dark Tower.

Bardem is in line to topline the film as Roland Deschain.

Gunslinger Roland Deschain roams an Old West-like landscape in search of a dark tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.

Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) is attached to direct from a script by Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind).

Production is scheduled to commence in September.

It’s almost SXSW time and to celebrate there’s a new Hobo with a Shotgun retro beat-em up game out on iPods, Pads, Phones etc which is actually pretty great – imagine Double Dragon but with Shotguns and Hobos are you’re there.

Along with the game there’s a new poster out for Jason Eisner’s film which is gruesome and therefore awesome. Jeff Proctor is the man behind the easel for this one and, if nothing else, the Grindhouse inpsired marketing for this film has been spot on. Let’s hope the film lives up to the promise.

With the sights and sounds of the Superbowl trailer bonanza still ringing in our eyes and ears there’s never been a better time to throw out this rumour which pertains to the Marvelous mashup coming our way on the 4th of May next year in the form of The Avengers.

While most of the cast for the film is already known, indeed drawing from the other films in the Marvelverse allows for one of the most impressive ensemble casts in terms of box office clout, there’s a new name daubed on the walls of the rumour mill today – that of Chuck actress Yvonne Strahovski.

Comic Book Movie have found this snippet online and boldly asserted that the actress is lining herself up for the Joss Whedon directed Avengers movie as Ms. Marvel – here are the words,

Though it’s not often that we get the scoop on anything here, I’ve just received information from a protected source inside Marvel that points to Yvonne Strahovski being cast in the upcoming Avengers movie as Ms. Marvel.

Could it be true?

I, for one, have long hoped to see Yvonne crop up in a comic book movie. She’s got the action chops to easily pull it off and it was really just a matter of time before the right character came along.

The Dark Tower is finally being developed for the screen with Universal leading the multi-platform release of Stephen King’s incredible Seven novel fantasy adventure series. Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman are already onboard to create the first film and the following first season, with Howard Directing and Akiva Goldsman writing, this will be part of a planned Trilogy of films and a TV series that link the films together. Now that the production has well and truly started, the inevitable casting rumours have begun.

Indiewire.com has brought us the news of some suitable and some very unsuitable casting rumours, and they are incredibly creative rumours at this point, for the lead character of the Dark Tower series called Roland Deschain; the last Gunslinger on a life long journey to reach the mysterious Dark Tower and to save the world.

Those that don’t know about the character of Roland, ideally he needs to be an weathered man of about 40-50 with striking blue eyes and able to look bloody cool with two big irons on his hip, Stephen King compared Roland to ‘the man with no name’ as played by Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s films. Now having said that, Ron Howard recently spoke freely with the LA Times about who could play Roland and the names mentioned were Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm and Dark Tower fansite Roland of choice, Viggo Mortensen. Although Ron Howard didn’t confirm if they had actually started casting he did say that he doubted the named stars would commit to such a project due to other commitments. A fair point, the Dark Tower would end up being at least 7 years of someone’s career unless they condense the books and choose to ignore parts of the plot, and if it fails to make a financial gain at the boxoffice, the cost of tying one of these A-List actors down for the duration of the franchise would be a financial risk straight away.

This could mean that a lesser known actor could be chosen to fill the gunslingers boots which is slightly worrying as the film will need a big name to get the box office draw it needs to launch the Dark Tower to more than the fans of the books, however Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman would be terrible choices for the role and could never offer enough character to suit Roland’s personality, Viggo would be absolutely perfect but I agree he would unlikely commit to such a large franchise and Jon Hamm is likely to be committed to Madmen for a few more years, but of course these are just rumours but as rumours for castings go, The Dark Tower characters are the ones that interest more than any other film on the horizon.

I’ve just finished reading the Dark Tower series over a three year spell and it is one of the most engaging and incredible stories I’ve ever experienced and I, like many fans, expect the source material to be followed as closely as possible which would mean an adult rating has to be maintained to get the most out of Roland and his Ka-Tet’s adventures through parallel worlds and time travel. The look of the production and casting has to be completely right or instantly the fans will react negatively which is what the adaptation does not need.

The eventual appointment of Zack Snyder as director of the latest Superman reboot has divided commentators. Some are hopeful that his stylistic verve, comfort with SFX and action sequences and proven track record with graphic novel and comic book adaptations will all help produce a positive outcome. Others were hoping for a more left-field option such as Darren Aronofsky (who we know is now doing “The Wolverine”) or Duncan Jones (Moon) to try to bring something fresh and less predictable to what is in essence quite an old-fashioned character.

No doubt the casting of Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman will prove as divisive, whatever the outcome and Deadline are telling us that the process of selecting Brandon Routh’s successor, or indeed of selecting Brandon Routh again, has begun in earnest. Although Brandon Routh worked excellently as Superman and Clark within the film crafted by Bryan Singer, there are legitimate concerns as to whether he would be as good a fit within what may prove to be a more stylised milieu, care of Snyder.

Producer Christopher Nolan and Snyder are apparently looking for someone aged 28-32 and are open to creating a new star by either casting someone wholly unknown, or at least someone not very well known. Thoughts therefore turn to actors who are established in assorted TV series, subject to concerns about the shooting schedule wreaking havoc with whatever commitments those actors might have to the programmes to which they are already committed. With shooting scheduled by Warner Bros to start around next June, Nolan and Snyder have plenty of time, but will no doubt want to make the decision as soon as possible to assist with pre-production preparation.

Deadline are throwing out a number of names. Armie Hammer, who played the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network would be ideal physically at a strapping 6’5″, though he is only 24 years old. He was in fact provisionally cast as Batman in George Miller’s planned Justice League film a number of years ago, before the project fell through. Joe Manganiello of True Blood (aged 34) and Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries (only 5’9”) are also being mentioned.

Brandon Routh certainly cannot be excluded at this point, although a reboot with so clear a connection to the last film may feel like too much of a stretch. Likewise Tom Welling from TV’s Smallville should still be in the mix, even if he does look a little young and has perhaps had enough of all things Superman after 10 seasons on Smallville.

Whether this will run as long as the director decision did, we shall see. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything. In the meantime, who would be your ideal choice?

A third Men in Black film was not as inevitable as it would seem with the energy and dry wit of the springy first film giving way to a diluted, misshapen misfire of a sequel. Eight year later however Messrs. Smith and Jones are reuniting with a few new faces for a third trip around the galaxy.

Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alec Baldwin and Betty White jump on board the MIB3 wagon for the next installment of the series which comes complete with a time twisting plot. Set pictures have surfaced from Splash (via ComingSoon) which can be seen below and you can follow the links for more pics.

The 3D picture has a release date of May 25th, 2012.

In other, MIB3 related news, The L.A. Times have an interesting article on the recruiting of Catch Me If You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to kick the script into shape. The Times claim that Nathanson will take Etan Cohen’s draft and concentrate his efforts on the section of the script where the young K (played by Josh Brolin) is visited by Will Smith’s J. On set rewrites are a matter of course for many big budget productions and the report also mentions that the whole shebang will be shut down over Christmas and restart in the new year with the present day scenes being filmed in 2010 and the 1969 scenes will shoot next year.

There aren’t many films involving Rutger Hauer these days, and that’s a shame. Thank God then that he’s heading back to our screens as the titular hero of Hobo with a Shotgun.

Tracing its origins to a Grindhouse fake trailer HWAS is the ultraviolent brainchild of Jason Eisner who entered a competition to have his trailer screened as part of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double-bill.

Like its fake trailer brother Machete, Hobo was developed into a feature length film and is heading to our screens next year, and there’s a pretty special poster out in the wild. Rutger looks mad.

Kevin Smith has been a busy boy of late. News comes through from the man himself (on website Silent Bob Speaks) that shooting ended on new film Red State (a horror film, loosely based on the odious Westboro Baptist Church) on Wednesday night.

Not only that, but he’s been editing the film at every available opportunity throughout the 25 days of production, and it’s pretty much complete!

“At our wrap party last night (for the flick we wrapped 2 days ago, mind you) we also watched the flick we just completed. And I’m not talking about some bullshit assembly, either: this puppy is fine-cut, complete with credits and some pre-mixing: 92 mins without credits, 98 mins with an end credit sequence that’s not to be believed.”

What’s more, he’s also posted this rather ominous-looking teaser poster for the film online (see below), created by the producer’s assistant.

Phew! Just goes to show what you can achieve if you stop smoking weed (Smith is a born-again pot head) and cease tweeting endlessly for a little while.

This is what I’ve been wanting to see for a long time. A really good video interview with Peter Jackson talking about The Hobbit, the mess it’s been in, the seemingly mess it’s still in an how this mess will get resolved! With the movie being greenlit and casting announced, it’s on the way to being made but it’s still in turmoil as to where it going to actually be filmed. It sounds like it’s coming to crunch time and decision needs to me made.

He’s sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss what’s been going on and more specifically, not that the movie has been greenlit, whether it’s going to stay in New Zealand. He thinks it would be ludicrous to move especially when you see the sets that are being built behind him for Gollum’s cave which look rather vast.

There’s been reports that the production could move to the UK but as you’ll see in this video, Warner Bros. are travelling to New Zealand for a meeting on Monday to discuss whether the movie will stay shooting in NZ or move somewhere else.
