In many ways this is a frustrating figure for a film which has been almost universally praised by critics, but it’s perhaps unsurprising why it hasn’t made that breakthrough to a huge mainstream crowd. It isn’t the action-heavy delight fans of the Fast & Furious series may have been expecting, and its bursts of ultra violence, coupled with a sometimes languid, studied pace, means it clearly sits outside of that traditional Hollywood model.

Similar cineaste-friendly fare has often stumbled at the box office (last year’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a recent example) but sometimes a film comes along which manages to appease both camps and against all odds, rakes in the big bucks whilst satisfying those who have ventured to experience the more obvious esoteric delights on offer. Below is a small selection of those films:

Black Swan

It’s safe to say that no one could have predicted the huge financial success and audience love attributed to Darren Aronofsky’s twisted psychosexual thriller earlier this year. It was a film which the director struggled to scrape the money together for (leaving plenty of time for star Natalie Portman to train like crazy) and watching the beautiful young star’s decent into a Polanski-esque spiral of madness and schizophrenia (all framed within the rather cold and austere world of ballet) hardly screams “audience-friendly” either. But ultimately the film did find a rather substantial crowd, and which went on to gross an unprecedented $329 million worldwide.

Part of this must be attributed to Portman’s riveting, nervy performance snagging her an Oscar nod and ultimate win, added to that all-important (in the studio’s eyes, at least) prestige to the project. This was also the director behind the resurrection of Micky Rourke the previous year, giving audiences a refreshingly open and ego-free glimpse at a seasoned performer who had struggled to make any real impact on screen for a while (which to a certain extent, mirrored Portman’s own career trajectory prior to Black Swan).

Memento

For a film entirely constructed of a narrative told in reverse chronological order, the challenges faced in initially winning over a cinema-savvy audience must have proved pretty high, let alone eliciting the interests of the traditional popcorn crowd. It’s to Memento’s great success that many fans of the film hailed from both ends of the cinematic spectrum, and even if some were initially confounded by the material, a great many were unanimous in their praise of it (the film sits at 31 in the independent, fan-led IMDb Top 250).

The film opened the Hollywood floodgates for director Chris Nolan, and like his huge hit from last year, Inception (another film which has a rightful place on this list), the many themes and ideas which the director explored in his sophomore feature were every bit as prevalent in that slice of big-budget action-tinged escapism.

Napoleon Dynamite

Ostensibly, Napoleon Dynamite may have looked like another quirky, coming-of-age teen comedy, but its kitsch, DayGlo aesthetic and deliciously off-kilter humour wasn’t necessarily appealing to the types of cinemagoers who were flocking to the latest American Pie incarnation at the time. Nevertheless, the film found a healthy-sized audience (it earned over $40 million in the US) which is all the more impressive when compared against its initial production budget of just $400,000.

A large part of it’s success was certainly derived from the outstanding performance by lead Jon Heder as the socially-awkward, perpetually perplexed-looking protagonist, but a strong supporting cast of comic characters and eminently quotable dialogue helped to propel the film into the big league, causing vast numbers of fans across the land to purchase ginger perm-like wigs for fancy dress parties and sport the now iconic ‘Vote for Pedro’ t-shirts.

Produced by MTV Films (it’s hard to imagine the company taking a punt on similar material nowadays), news that an animated TV series in now in the works from Fox, featuring many of the original cast members (including Heder, Efren Ramirez as Pedro and Jon Gries as the wonderful Uncle Rico) is a testament to the enduring charm of the film.

Pan’s Labyrinth

A post-Spanish civil war, fairytale-infused adult fantasy yarn probably doesn’t sound like an easy sell, but Pan’s Labyrinth became that rare beast – the foreign art-house genre crossover hit. Critics positively gushed (Mark Kermode hailed it “the Citizen Kane of fantasy cinema”) and both fans of foreign language cinema and fantasy film enthusiasts came together to sample the wondrous meshing of a real-world political struggle with a gothic fable (perfected, arguably to a greater degree, in director Guillermo del Toro’s earlier work, The Devil’s Backbone.)

It says everything about the currently financial state of Hollywood when a master like del Toro is forced to abandon his James Cameron-backed dream project (an adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness) due to budgetary concerns, while this modest Spanish creature feature went on to gross $80 million worldwide.

Pulp Fiction

Nowadays it’s easy to forget the success and influence Pulp Fiction had over the industry following it’s release, but the fact is, this was a low-budget crime flick ($8.5 million) which went on to make over $200 million at the world-wide box office and singlehandedly enabled the Weinstein Brothers to establish their powerhouse indie-centric studio, Miramax (or as eldest sibling Harvey would put it, “the house that Quentin built”).

Again, Pulp was another film which refused to play by the traditions of the genre, and made audiences put a little work in between being thrilled and entertained by the lovingly-crafted dialogue and career-defining performances on offer. Its convoluted narrative jumps and unconventional approach to storytelling proved to be a huge draw, even building to a ‘Gimp Vs Gump’ stand-off during the 1995 Oscars, when the film was up against the more obviously appealing mainstream Forrest Gump. It was the perfect example of audiences being able to embrace a film outside of the norm and celebrate that fact.

Darren Aronofsky is looking to direct an epic re-telling of the story behind Noah’s Ark, entitled, Noah, Deadline reports.

The project is one that he has written himself, and the script is being rewritten by John Logan, whose work is immensely impressive, including some of my favourite films: Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Sweeney Todd, and the upcoming Hugo Cabret and Bond 23.

Naturally, this is a project that a lot of studios will be vying for after Aronofsky’s success with his last film, Black Swan, which was originally envisaged as an independent film, produced by Fox Searchlight Pictures. It of course gained massive worldwide acclaim, culminating in more than $300m. at the box office from a $13m. budget, as well as earning Natalie Portman a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress.

According to Deadline, New Regency (whose recent successes include Love And Other Drugs, Marley & Me, and Jumper) are looking to co-finance the film, with Paramount, Fox, and Summit also considering getting involved with the project.

Having made his last two films, Black Swan and The Wrestler, off relatively small budgets ($13m. and $6m. respectively), Aronofsky is now looking to step things up a notch and wants $130m. to make Noah. It’s described as,

“a big fantasy epic, and an opportunity for Aronofsky to create a world.”

The budget is a big one, and it’s a clear indication of just how epic his vision for this film is, so it’s definitely something to look forward to. After the brilliance of Black Swan last year, the expectations will be significantly high for any project Aronofsky’s involved with now, and a grand epic like Noah sounds like a perfect choice to show he’s capable of even more than he’s already given us.

Entering the crowded arena of horror movies swoops Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, with grace and style enough to show up the borrowed nostalgia scares and toothless gorefrenzies of modern horror films for what they are, and in doing so giving me one of my favourite films of last year.

The merits of Darren Aronofsky’s latest were well argued in Ian’s review of the film back in January, and it was a clear favourite when it played the festival circuit last year. Now that the film arrives on Blu-ray and DVD we can revisit it to see if the dark tale of perfection and perception holds up to a second viewing. Short answer: It does. Here’s why.

I cannot deny there was a tangible thrill when I opened the envelope containing the Black Swan Blu-ray; the film’s release in Japan has just pushed its earning past the $300 million mark proving two things: audiences will flock to challenging adult drama and that Aronofsky continues to develop as a filmmaker capable of producing work to critical and commercial acclaim.

Aronofsky’s film of a fragile ballet dancer finding her dark side in order to play both the white and black swan in Swan Lake is a masterclass is disorientation and seduction with Natalie Portman deservedly winning her Oscar for her portrayal of Nina, and the transformation she undergoes is painful and carefully handled. We are drawn into her rapidly enfolding world as the preparations for the opening night see her losing her grip on reality, ‘helped’ by Vincent Cassel’s domineering director and Mila Kunis’s flirtatious understudy. Aronofsky peppers the film with visual tricks and eerie images, but we never lose focus on Nina’s struggle and doomed triumph.

It’s my favourite of the director’s film; it’s an eerie and very serious fairy tale, dripping with paranoia and we watch the onslaught of a dozen psychological and physical terrors on our Swan Queen again and again, not because she it is fun to watch her crumble beneath the numerous weights, rather it is the constant tension between the light and dark, the real world and Nina’s constructed reality which gives the film its momentum.

The Blu-ray is a shining example of delivering a polished high-definition transfer of a film and embellishing it with some decent extras. Here we have a mixture of superficial portraits of its stars as well an essential ninety minute documentary, entitled Metamorphosis, taking us from the initial ideas, through design, choreography, shooting and post production. Aronosfksy and his cast and crew are a rightfully proud and gregarious bunch, happy to go into details of the challenges of shooting in a bitterly cold December New York as they are to tease us with alternative visual effects for the final transformation. Some of the film’s obvious symbolic elements, the overarching light and dark is one example, are given time and are illuminated by the comments made. The documentary’s style borrows from the vérité nature of the film itself and a feeling creeps upon you that Arnofsky’s passion pervades the production completely; the film is brighter and sharper on a second watch after the documentary has been viewed.

Character profiles of the main players are a nice thought as the film invites you to dive beneath the surface but the pleasure of this film is to notice what is not obvious, the moments that passed you by in the cinema, the moment the dance troupe are made up of Nina’s dopplegangers is one I missed and I have a feeling that there are more to be found. Aronofsky has created a disquieting and powerful film, reminiscent of Roeg’s Don’t Look Now and elements had me in mind of a lost Disney Horror The Watcher in the Woods, but this is so much more than The Red Shoes remade by David Lynch. The transfer is solid, the sound design tremendously effective in any half decent home cinema system and I was surprised at how little the film lost in translation to the smaller screen. If you haven’t seen it, you should and quickly.

Film: ****~ (4/5)

Blu-ray: ***~~ (3/5)

Special Features:

Metamorphosis: A Three-Part Series–A behind the scenes look at the filmmaking process from Darren Aronofsky’s visionary directing, to the physically-demanding acting, to the stunning special effects. Illuminating and essential viewing.

Behind the Curtain–An inside look at the film’s costume and production design. Worth a watch for the production design conversation.

Ten Years in the Making–Natalie Portman and Darren Aronofsky discuss their creative journey, from “preparing for the role” to “dancing with the camera”, thankfully light on the “she’s such a wonderful actress” balls.

Cast Profiles: Roles of a Lifetime–Fox Movie Channel Produced superfluities.

Needless to say, the critical acclaim (and now apparently hefty BO receipts) enjoyed by Black Swan gave Aronofsky some breadth of choice and accordingly, we hear he may team up with George Clooney for a sci-fi project by the name of Human Nature.

The last film we saw with that name featured an exceedingly hirsuite Rhys Ifans, with Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman giving us their typically skewed look at humanity. We find ourselves in very different territory this time around, however.

Human Nature is an original sci-fi script by Jeff Welch, which has apparently been knocking around for more than a decade. Welch hasn’t much else at all to his name, but then at one point neither did Tarantino or Kaufman, so let’s not pass judgement too prematurely. The script finds Clooney being cryogenically frozen and waking up to a future where humans are kept as pets. Part Planet of the Apes, part Forever Young, part Austin Powers, part Demolition Man?

In all seriousness, it seems safe to assume that this will be a sincere, prestige piece, hopefully continuing recent examples of serious, ideas-based sci-fi (Moon, Source Code, Monsters), rather than the bombastic spectacle of Transformers, Skyline and its like. Akiva Goldsman is believed to be on producer duties at Warner Bros and is said to be looking at the budget, but if all is well, we might see Aronofsky and Clooney back in this genre for the first time since The Fountain and Solaris.

This video is part of the Special Features on the Blu-ray and if there’s a film that benefits from a thorough deconstruction it’s this one, thankfully there’s an extensive breakdown of the film included on the disc, with contributions from cast and crew with Aronofsky in particular in a generous mood and watching how he builds the mental landscape of Natalie Portman’s fragile Nina is fascinating.

We’ve got a clip for you which hints at the ideas behind the film, the comprehensive extras are well worth a look.

Sitting in the theater, popcorn in hand, you watch the previews roll on and get a funny feeling: Haven’t they already made this movie?

Hollywood writers and producers are constantly working their creative juices to come up with fresh ideas, however, remakes, sequels, prequels, and the like have been a trend in the industry for decades. 2011 is no exception. There are more than a few films premiering this year that will have you doing a double take.

In 1984, a blue-eyed cutie named Kevin Bacon had us kicking off our Sunday shoes in a film directed by the late Herbert Ross called Footloose. 26 years later, Craig Brewer (director of 2006′s Black Snake Moan), is attempting a remake. In this year’s version, Kenny Wormald, a relatively unknown dancer from Boston, will revive Bacon’s role, Ren MacCormak, a big city kid who shakes things up in a small town. Perhaps this film will have a whole new generation playing Six Degrees of Kenny Wormald? Fun Fact: What was our new young star doing when Bacon was busy cutting footloose back in 1984? Wormald was pretty busy that year too… busy being born that is. What a way to make Mr. Bacon feel his age! No worries though, Bacon is still looking good doing what he does best and even has a film coming out this year that makes our list.

X-Men: First Class, in which Bacon plays mutant Sebastian Shaw, will debut in October. This film is interesting because rather than continuing the story of X-Men the movie is a prequel. The film goes back to the time when Charles Xavier first opened his school for mutants. In the last four films, Professor Xavier has been played by Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame, but James McAvoy will play the young professor in the prequel. Expectations for McAvoy are high as Stewart definitely leaves a hard act to follow, or in this case, precede.

They say truth is stranger than fiction…so maybe Natalie Portman’s suspicions of Mila Kunis wanting to snag the solo in Black Swan aren’t so crazy after all. Kunis may be trying to steal her co-star’s thunder with a No Strings Attached copycat out this summer called Friends with Benefits. Will Gluck, director of Easy A (2010), has made a film quite similar to the one we all saw premiere with Portman and Ashton Kutcher in February. Kunis plays opposite Justin Timberlake, and the story follows: boy and girl try to sleep together with no strings attached, boy falls for girl, girl just wants to be friends. Who knows how the two films will stack up but the way this season is playing out, Natalie, I’d want to stab her with a shard of mirror too!

There is something that never fails to elicit an annoyed sigh from me during preview time: a sequel. Great films followed by below-par sequels have been a problem in the entertainment world when producers trade ingenuity and quality for an easy way to make cash at the box-office. However, there is one sequel premiering in May that I am actually excited for: Hangover 2. It wasn’t long after the first Hangover premiered in 2009 that film hit the $235 million mark, breaking box-office records to become the highest grossing rated R comedy of all time (beating out previous record holder Beverly Hills Cop). Since the first movie premiered, the film’s four leading men (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha) have had 12 starring film roles between them. Now, Hollywood’s hardest working foursome is back together and I anticipate more from than sequel than an excuse to make money; hopes for this Hangover are high. As far as the other sequels out this year, keep an eye out for Cars 2, Happy Feet 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and see how they compare to their originals.

This December, Garry Marshall will release the next version of his 2010 film, Valentine’s Day, under the equally creative title, New Year’s Eve. Valentine’s Day stars Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Biel will be in the new film, but as different roles. Just as V-Day’s did, the cast list for New Year’s Eve looks more like a Xerox of the A-list: Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert De Niro, Hillary Swank, Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Lea Michelle, and Zac Efron just to name a few. Although the style of this film will mirror Valentine’s Day, I don’t think viewers will mind being reminded. From the cocktail of crazy mega-stars to the cheesy enchantment of a rom-com, I think this movie has potential for success.

Everyone knows the expression: Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it. Everyone, that is, except the creators of Scream and Final Destination. The films will come out with fourth and fifth installments this year, respectively. At this point, I don’t know who to blame, the people who continue to make these garbage films, or the people who continue to pay and go see them. Either way, I’d say both films are rated R for I’d Rather not.

Despite the déjà vu that these 2011 flicks may cause, two films rise above the rest in the world of sequels, remakes, and series: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II. The fourth of the five twilight films is out this November and audiences await what is said to be the raciest of the series so far. For HP fans, the time has come to finally say goodbye to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as the final installment of the film series, which has captured audiences for a decade, is released this July.
So, as the rest of 2011 unfolds we wait to see which reprisals have us wanting even more, and which have us saying enough is enough.

Imagine The Princess Bride spilling into the world of Willow, then add liberal lashings of Cheech and Chong-esque stoner humour and you’re somewhere close to Your Highness, the follow-up to director David Gordon Green’s previous weed-tinged comedy, Pineapple Express (which featured the two leads here).

Danny McBride (also onboard as co-writer) is the slacker prince Thadeous, a lazy and thoughtless member of royalty who would rather spend his days toking on medieval hash pipes and chasing sheep around outside the castle walls with faithful servant/plaything Courtney (the fabulously monikered Rasmus Hardiker) than attend the wedding of his older, more successful brother Fabious (James Franco). He is finally forced to buck his ideas up when his brother’s fiancé Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel, reunited with her All The Real Girls director) is kidnapped by an evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux).

Double-crossed by their own supposedly loyal band of knights and subjects (including respected character actor Toby Jones, who has a touch of an Oompa Loompa about him here) the two princes have to go it alone (with Courtney in-tow) on a mission to rescue the fair maiden. Their journey brings them into contact with a warrior girl (Natalie Portman) who has her own agenda for revenge against Leezar and together they embark on a race against time before the twin moons meet and the sex-starved wizard has his wicked way with Belladonna.

First things first, your capacity to enjoy this film may rest on whether you find the insertion of swear words into the actor’s faux ye olde English delivery to be constantly amusing. If that sounds like something you may get a kick out of, a fun time ahead you shall be privy to.

Sure, the film is crude and foul-mouthed, and sometimes aims for childish and cheap laughs, but it’s also a handsomely-shot and well-directed film, with some incredibly imaginative fantasy set-pieces (the finger dragons are a genius creation) and a group of performers who really inject a lot of fun into proceedings. Anyone familiar with McBride’s hilarious HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down will know what to expect from the actor here. Thadeous has Kenny Power’s vulgar ignorance and the same unimpressed, nonchalant look in his eyes, which really works a treat juxtaposed in this heightened fantasy world. Franco is fun too, and he appears to be channelling (intentionally or not) those blander-then-bland hunks from previous sword and sorcery epics. Theroux also delightfully hams it up with his villainous character and cranks up the pantomime factor tenfold.

Star of the moment Natalie Portman (wonder if she would have signed on here after wining her statuette?) doesn’t crop up until the one hour mark and plays it mostly straight, but is a good sport and is full of steely resolve, and is more than able to muster up some of that agility and nimbleness which was on display in Black Swan.

The creative team clearly have an affinity for the fantasy films from their childhood, and there are gentle riffs on the likes of Beastmaster, Clash of the Titans and Krull. There’s even a Muppet-like creation in the form of a weird bug-eyed, bong-totting wizard with paedophilic tendencies which really has to be seen to be believed. It’s the kind of character which Jim Henson may have conjured up if he had taken a more subversive and underground route with his creations.

Your Highness may not find itself in the pantheon of comedy greats anytime soon, but it’s a fun and entertaining flick, which once again proves that former indie auteur Green has a good grasp of knockabout, comedic mainstream fare.

***~~ (3/5)

It seems that the move is an amicable one with 20th Century Fox; the director simply felt he couldn’t spend the time out of the country and away from his family, which is understandable given that he could be away for close to a year. He said,

“I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”

The pair worked together on The Fountain back in 2006, also starring Rachel Weisz (then Aronofsky’s wife), which received very mixed reviews, some glowing and some critical, and ultimately failed to translate well into a box office success.

Aronofsky has been moving from strength to strength in the past few years with The Wrestler and, of course, the Academy Award-winning Black Swan, so the outlook for fans of the Wolverine franchise was certainly looking positive with the announcement of his involvement with the sequel.

However, much of the new film is to be set in Japan, and producer Lauren Shuler Donner had said towards the end of 2009,

“We want to make it authentic so I think it’s very likely we’ll be shooting in Japan.”

So Aronofsky has decided to bow out of the project, unable to commit himself to such a long stay away from home with a four-year-old son still growing up. I personally hope he will be announcing shortly what he is to work on next.

In their joint statement with the director about his exit, Fox said,

“While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do The Wolverine, we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both The Wrestler and Black Swan with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making The Wolverine. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”

No replacement has been announced yet, but with an ‘aggressive’ move forwards, we hope to have more news for you in that vein soon. The script, however, has been written, by one Christopher McQuarrie, genius writer of The Usual Suspects, and whose work on the original X-Men script went uncredited. And since it was a script that Aronofsky was clearly very seriously considering directing, I think it should be safe to assume that, provided the film finds another excellent director, we will have something to look forward to when The Wolverine is finally made.

The King’s Speech lived up to the high expectations it came with, and to see Chris Morris’s Four Lions take home the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer was a highlight.
The awards have begun – scroll down for all the updates.

The 64th British Academy Film Awards sponsored by Orange are getting underway in London tonight and we’ll be updating you live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden which plays host to the awards, as well as bringing you photos of the red carpet arrivals.

I’ll be updating you on each award as it is announced, let me know what you think in the comments below or by following us on Twitter at heyuguysblog, though we won’t be revealing who won on the twitter feed (for those waiting to play along at home – the BBC are showing the ceremony around 9), so keep hitting refresh to see all the updates right here.

LATEST UPDATE HERE…

21.23 -Sir Christopher Lee’s gracious and warm acceptance speech is the perfect way to end the ceremony tonight. It was an excellent year for The King’s Speech and to have Chris Morris celebrated was something I didn’t expect but was wonderful to see. Ok – some great speeches, some bizarre autocue problems but it was a great night. We’ll have our pictures from the red carpet up soon and then all the fun of the afterparty which is kicking off in a short while.

Thanks to all those who came along and joined us for the fun – hope you enjoyed our coverage. Same time next year?

21.13 – Final award tonight and one very richly deserved. Tim Burton is on stage to present the BAFTA Fellowship to Sir Christopher Lee.

News that Sir Christopher Lee was to be awarded the BAFTA Fellowship was met with a huge wave of endorsement from the public. The man is a icon of cinema, one of the few men whose life and career is known all over the world, and each of you will have your favourite role of his. I had the pleasure of hearing him read Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky as part of the promotion for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and it was a moment I will never forget.

As he takes to the stage I’ve collected a few videos for you to enjoy – the last one in particular is a treat…

For starters here’s the trailer for The Wicker Man – if you’ve not seen it buy it now…

Here’s some of his Dracula,

Christopher Lee sings!

And here’s the man giving out some very good advice re: Timewarping,

21.11 – So pleased for The King’s Speech – let’s hope it gets people out in their droves to see it again. It’s a worthy winner tonight and the reception for the awards it has won tonight, though unsurprising, was genuine and warm. I spoke with Tom Hooper about the film here, so take a look when you have time for the story behind the film.

21.08 – And the award goes to The King’s Speech crowning what is a great night for Tom Hooper and his team. Sorry about the ‘crowning’ bit there – just preempting the morning’s front pages.

21.07 – The only man who could is on stage to present the BAFTA for Best Film – Mr. Samuel. L. Jackson.

Nominees

• BLACK SWAN Mike Medavoy, Brian Oliver, Scott Franklin
• INCEPTION Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan
• THE KING’S SPEECH Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gareth Unwin
• THE SOCIAL NETWORK Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, Céan Chaffin
• TRUE GRIT Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen

Many have already called this award for The King’s Speech and it’s an incredibly strong year with perhaps only The Social Network able to interrupt The King’s Speech, but the best thing is that you get to enjoy them all and if the wisdom of crowds is worth anything and the Oscar will end up going to The Social Network then this could be where the two awards divide and Tom Hooper’s film is given the nod. Time’s up – let’s see who wins…

21.03 Colin Firth wins it. As Radiohead have it – No Surprises but the audience cheered for this award more than any other. I think it’s about time to set some sort of campaign for Sir Colin Firth right here. Despite the fact that the result was never in any real doubt it is still gratifying to see Colin Firth up there on stage, he is charming and graceful. Bravo.

21.01 – Amy Adams is presenting the BAFTA for Leading Actor

Nominees

• JAVIER BARDEM Biutiful
• JEFF BRIDGES True Grit
• JESSE EISENBERG The Social Network
• COLIN FIRTH The King’s Speech
• JAMES FRANCO 127 Hours

The Colin Firth award for Best Actor will surely go to The King’s Speech. It’s almost a foregone conclusion for the actor to follow up his win last year for A Single Man with the award tonight. It’s a strong line up though with James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg doing amazing work in their respective films. Will we be surprised?

20.59 – The award goes to Natalie Portman for Black Swan. Darren Aronofsky is on stage to collect the award and he is saying some very nice things about her, which is just as well because her performance is stunning.

20.56 – Gerard Butler presents the Leading Actress award, THIS IS BAFTA!

Nominees

• ANNETTE BENING The Kids Are All Right
• JULIANNE MOORE The Kids Are All Right
• NATALIE PORTMAN Black Swan
• NOOMI RAPACE The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
• HAILEE STEINFELD True Grit

Many people, though not the UK marketers for True Grit it seems, have Hailee Steinfeld’s name on their lips, and there’s no doubt she’s in great company here. The popular opinion is that Natalie Portman will run away with the award which would be fine with me, as I thought her performance was a career best. Though I can’t argue with the two nominations for The Kids Are All Right it would be nice to have five separate films from which to draw Best Actress, perhaps Made in Dagenham could have been given the nod this time? Anyhoo, time for the envelope to be neatly parted and the chosen name to hit the air.

20.54 – David Fincher wins for The Social Network! Good call – and we get to see Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg on stage to collect the award.

20.51 – The Sir David Lean award for Best Director, Tilda Swinton graces us with her presence. Hard one to call this award…

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Danny Boyle
• BLACK SWAN Darren Aronofsky
• INCEPTION Christopher Nolan
• THE KING’S SPEECH Tom Hooper
• THE SOCIAL NETWORK David Fincher

I loved Tom Hooper’s work on The King’s Speech but I think this will be David Fincher’s year. The Social Network had so much going for it with an amazing script and a fantastic ensemble cast but holding it all together was Fincher whose assured direction made this one of the films of the decade. Christopher Nolan is also getting a lot of love for Inception and Danny Boyle may repeat the success of Slumdog Millionaire with another win. Oh, and Darren Aronofsky did wonderful things with Black Swan. So, hey – we’re all winners!

20.50 – Time to look at The Social Network. It is a fantastic film, but will it best The King’s Speech?

20.48 – The BAFTA is awarded to True Grit – the only film I’ve not seen. There were cheers here in the press room so I’m guessing it’s great.

20.47 – Cinematography awards time.

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Anthony Dod Mantle, Enrique Chediak
• BLACK SWAN Matthew Libatique
• INCEPTION Wally Pfister
• THE KING’S SPEECH Danny Cohen
• TRUE GRIT Roger Deakins

Danny Cohen did great things in The King’s Speech given the static nature of the action, and I loved Matthew Libatique’s work on Aronofskys Black Swan, and I’ve still not seen True Grit which is unforgivable I know, as Roger Deakins’ work is stunning and I’ve heard that his work with The Coens film was some of his best. I’m all ears for the announcement…

20.45 – Sorkin’s awards haul continues and with good reason as The Social Network wins. I’m a big fan of Sorkin’s work and he’s giving a great and gracious speech. This award was well deserved – I’m guessing the Oscar is next.

20.42 – Julianne Moore is great – and on stage to present the BAFTA for Adapted Screenplay

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy
• THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Rasmus Heisterberg, Nikolaj Arcel
• THE SOCIAL NETWORK Aaron Sorkin
• TOY STORY 3 Michael Arndt
• TRUE GRIT Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Aaron Sorkin has already won a ton of awards for his adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, and rightly so. Fans of his work on The West Wing will have warmed instantly with the rapid fire dialogue bursting with wit and life. Michael Arndt’s work on Toy Story 3 is also worthy of mention, as it managed to blend seamlessly with the world Pixar created with the first two films, never pandering to fans or dumbing down, instead delivering a script that is as funny and heartwarming as any this year. But I reckon this will be Sorkin’s night.

20.39 – Tom Hardy wins it, but isn’t around to bask in the spotlight. Hardy is clearly a very well loved star – his work in Inception would have inspired people to seek out his other roles. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Dark Knight Rises are in his future, so we’ll be watching.

20.35 – A Single Man director Tom Ford is on stage, sharp as a razor, for the Orange Wednesday Rising Star Award

Nominees

• GEMMA ARTERTON
• ANDREW GARFIELD
• TOM HARDY
• AARON JOHNSON
• EMMA STONE

Though the definition of Rising Star may be a little unclear, as most of the nominees have already risen in my most humble opinion, my feeling is that Tom Hardy has a lot of love out there amongst the fans, who were the ones voting here. Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass and Nowhere Boy were impressive and a lot of fun, but I reckon only Andrew Garfield and Hardy have the momentum which will carry them through. Last year Kristen Stewart won, and before that Noel Clarke picked up the award so it’ll be interesting to see who joins them in this select group of winners.

20.34 – On a personal aside here Toy Story 3 is on constant repeat in my house as my two year old has discovered the film, so I can honestly say that even after 214 viewing it’s still a great film.

20.33 – Even Neve Campbell’s announcement of Toy Story 3 had a weary sigh of resignation to it. But who cares – it’s Toy Story 3. And it’s all kinds of awesome. Pixar have never been better and it’s great to see them leading the way in animated films, especially if they push their competitors to do some amazing work too.

20.31 – Back to the awards – Nicholas Hoult and Neve Campbell say Hi! This is the Best Animated Film award…

Nominees

• DESPICABLE ME Chris Renaud, Pierre Coffin
• HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois
• TOY STORY 3 Lee Unkrich

This is an obvious one – with Lee Unkrich’s film certain to walk away with the award. Closing off one of the most beloved and critically successful cinematic trilogies the third Toy Story film had more heart and charm than the entire output of the other animation studios, and caused grown men to tear up in their millions. New toys!

20.29 – The looooooong Harry Potter love in gives way to a look at another Best Film nominee – Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. It’s an amazing film.

20.18 – The wonderful Stephen Fry bounds on stage to talk all things Harry Potter for the Outstanding British Contribution award.

What more to say that Harry Potter and The Great British Institution? Casting a spell over audiences for almost a decade,as well as giving writers a slightly feckless cauldron of lazy metaphors to use on these occasions, but with the final film coming our way in a few months its time to look back over the years of magic the various directors and wealth of British talent have given cinema goers.

Everyone loves them some Potter don’t they? Here’s one of the 14,237,102 Harry Potter related videos on the interwebosphere to remind you of why it’s great.

20.14 – The King’s Speech wins the Bafta for Original Screenplay. David Seidler takes the stage and is charming the pants off the crowd. He picked out ‘Captain Tom Hooper’ and is giving a fantastic speech. Which is just right as he wrote it and he’s got a BAFTA and everything.

20.11 – An Education’s team of Rosamund Pike and Dominic Cooper take the stage to present the Original Screenplay award.

Nominees

• BLACK SWAN Mark Heyman, Andrés Heinz, John McLaughlin
• THE FIGHTER Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson
• INCEPTION Christopher Nolan
• THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT Lisa Cholodenko, Stuart Blumberg
• THE KING’S SPEECH David Seidler

This is a hard one to call. I was a big fan of Black Swan, and would happily choose it over Inception and The Fighter, but I think David Seidler’s work with The King’s Speech may get the nod tonight. His script gave the trio of Hooper, Rush and Firth great scope to play with the ideas of paternal and regal duty and the complications of fear and family. I had a great time with it so I’m hoping it gets a look in.

20.07 – Geoffrey Rush wins it – success of The King’s Speech continues. Loved his work and the chemistry he had with Colin Firth was amazing to watch.

20.05- Jessica Alba is on stage now. So is the attention of everyone in the room. Best Supporting Actor is why she be there.

Nominees

• CHRISTIAN BALE The Fighter
• ANDREW GARFIELD The Social Network
• PETE POSTLETHWAITE The Town
• MARK RUFFALO The Kids Are All Right
• GEOFFREY RUSH The King’s Speech

I would love to see Pete Postlethwaite’s performance in The Town surprise people here tonight. He made a cliched role truly terrifying and elevated Ben Affleck’s film along with the work of Jeremy Renner. Geoffrey Rush made a great team with Colin Firth and had a lot to do with the success of Tom Hooper’s film. Andrew Garfield was rightly praised in The Social Network, which when combined with his turn in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go points to an amazing year for the actor, but I feel this will be Christian Bale’s night.

20.04 -Tom Hooper is on stage. Lovely man who told me that he wanted to do a Bond film. Hmm. Colin Firth as villain? I’m game.

20.02 – Very, very happy about Chris Morris’s win in the previous category. Reminded of Duncan Jones’ win last year. Great, great talents both.

20.01 – The BAFTA goes to The King’s Speech. No, we’re not shocked either. But it is a brilliant film. Step up Mr Hooper.

19.59 – Why, hello Emma Watson. Present us an award for Outstanding British Film won’t you?

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, Christian Colson, John Smithson
• ANOTHER YEAR Mike Leigh, Georgina Lowe
• FOUR LIONS Chris Morris, Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain, Mark Herbert, Derrin Schlesinger
• THE KING’S SPEECH Tom Hooper, David Seidler, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gareth Unwin
• MADE IN DAGENHAM Nigel Cole, William Ivory, Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley

If The King’s Speech is the obvious choice for Best Film I wonder if the Academy will divert votes to another of the films on the list. As I’ve said I’d love to see Chris Morris take it home for Four Lions, but I loved Mike Leigh’s Another Year, one of his finest. Good to see Made in Dagenham making the cut here too alongside Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours which has a far better chance of winning Best Actor for James Franco than for this film, but hey – what do I know. Let’s find out…

19.55 YES! Chris Morris wins it for Four Lions. Morris isn’t here tonight but here’s a video of him collecting another award so this will have to do.

19.52 – Kevin Spacey turns up on stage doing a Bill Clinton impression to introduce the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer

Nominees

• THE ARBOR Clio Barnard (Director), Tracy O’Riordan (Producer)
• EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP Banksy (Director), Jaimie D’Cruz (Producer)
• FOUR LIONS Chris Morris (Director/Writer)
• MONSTERS Gareth Edwards (Director/Writer)
• SKELETONS Nick Whitfield (Director/Writer)

For me Chris Morris’s amazing debut Four Lions was a highlight of last year, making good on the years of groundbreaking work on television with his move to the big screen. The Arbor was a very interesting film, which for me lost its narrative strand before picking it up towards the film’s end but with Gareth Edwards’ Monsters and Banksy’s stunning Exit Through the Gift Shop up for the award this is perhaps the strongest category this year and a testament to the talent working in the UK. (I’ve not seen Skeletons, but heard from Bleeding Cool’s Brendon Connelly that it’s great so let’s see if Nick Whitfield upsets the bafta cart). Awards time…

19.47 -Blimey. Helena Bonham Cater wins it. She was great – no doubt about it, I thought it would have been Amy Adams and Lesley Manville. Bonham Carter is a class act. Best speech of the night so far, do tune into the BBC broadcast to see it. I’d love to see Pin-headed Queen. Very pleased to see Tom Hooper’s film getting this award.

19.45 – Everyone say Hello to James McAvoy as he takes the stage to introduce the Best Supporting Actress award

Nominees

• AMY ADAMS The Fighter
• HELENA BONHAM CARTER The King’s Speech
• BARBARA HERSHEY Black Swan
• LESLEY MANVILLE Another Year
• MIRANDA RICHARDSON Made in Dagenham

My money is on Lesley Manville’s staggering performance in Mike Leigh’s Another Year, which was painful and truly affecting – while Barbara Hershey in Black Swan didn’t go fully down the Piper Laurie/Carrie avenue, her performance was one of the best she’s given. Lot of love for Amy Adams in The Fighter, and David O. Russell’s film had some amazing work from the actors, with Christian Bale looking certain to pick up the corresponding award in the Best Supporting Actor category. Or will this be the first award which goes to The King’s Speech? Time to find out…

19.43 -Bit of a breather in the slew of awarding here with a look at The Coens True Grit. All the HeyUGuys coverage here. Love the Coens and you should to.

19.39 – The award goes to Inception. Ok. Obvious choice really. There was some great, great work with the Escheresque landscapes doing a lot. Still reminded me of Heavenly Creatures a touch though – that bit where the garden flourishes before their eyes.

19.38 – Special Effects awards time everyone.

Nominees

• ALICE IN WONDERLAND Ken Ralston, David Schaub, Sean Phillips, Carey Villegas
• BLACK SWAN Dan Schrecker
• HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 Tim Burke, John Richardson, Nicolas Ait’Hadi, Christian Manz
• INCEPTION Chris Corbould, Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Peter Bebb
• TOY STORY 3 Guido Quaroni, Micheal Fong, David Ryu

It may seem that the more subtle work of Dan Schrecker will be overlooked in favour of Inception or Alice, the former of which certainly played into the anticipation for the film – you’ll remember the first time you saw that famous shot of Paris folding over. The work on Harry Potter was as good as it has ever been but perhaps didn’t offer anything particularly new.

19.36 -Inception won it. Of course it did. Not happy with the plucking of Black Swan so far tonight…

19.35 – Minnie Driver and Sam Claflin take the stage to present the Production Design award.

Nominees

• ALICE IN WONDERLAND Robert Stromberg, Karen O’Hara
• BLACK SWAN Thérèse DePrez, Tora Peterson
• INCEPTION Guy Hendrix Dyas, Larry Dias, Doug Mowat
• THE KING’S SPEECH Eve Stewart, Judy Farr
• TRUE GRIT Jess Gonchor, Nancy Haigh

We’re seeing these five films crop up a lot in the design stakes and for my money I loved the work done on The King’s Speech and Black Swan, but I fear they may be overlooked in the wake of Inception.

19.33 – Colleen Atwood wins it. Two for Alice in Wonderland. The costume design was pretty fantastic, such a shame that the film slightly soured my enthusiasm to return to it.

19.32 – Costume Design award time Cloth fans.

Nominees

• ALICE IN WONDERLAND Colleen Atwood
• BLACK SWAN Amy Westcott
• THE KING’S SPEECH Jenny Beavan
• MADE IN DAGENHAM Louise Stjernsward
• TRUE GRIT Mary Zophres

It’s times like this I wish we had Clothes on Film on hand to talk knowledgeably about the costume design for the five films here. Black Swan’s muted tones gave the film a great look and in total opposition to the legendary Colleen Atwood’s work for Tim Burton’s Alice.

19.31 -The award is dedicated to (amongst other) Noomi Rapace who is in the audience. ‘Hugs to all of you.’ I’m feeling it.

19.28 – It’s Lisbeth Salander’s night – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo conquers the BAFTAs. Is David Fincher remaking this film in 3D? I guess Dr Kermode would know.

19.26 -Mark Kermode takes the stage to introduce the award for Film Not in the English Language

Nominees

• BIUTIFUL Alejandro González Iñárritu, Jon Kilik, Fernando Bovaira
• THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Søren Stærmose, Niels Arden Oplev
• I AM LOVE Luca Guadagnino, Francesco Melzi D’Eril, Marco Morabito, Massimiliano Violante
• OF GODS AND MEN Xavier Beauvois
• THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES Mariela Besuievsky, Juan José Campanella

Of Gods and Men and I Am Love are in with a good chance here, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo juggernaut may be making it’s stop at the Royal Opera House tonight. Biutiful has garnered some decent press but Javier Bardem seems to have be the cause of most of that and he’s up for Best Actor here. Time for the gold mask to get handed over…

19.23 – The BAFTA goes to Alice in Wonderland. Cant argue. The clip they played, of course, contained Helena Bonham Carter. Colleen Atwood got a shout out, and she may win her own for Best Costume Design.

19.22 – The awards are coming thick and fast here – Make Up and Hair now.

Nominees

• ALICE IN WONDERLAND Valli O’Reilly, Paul Gooch
• BLACK SWAN Judy Chin, Geordie Sheffer
• HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 Amanda Knight, Lisa Tomblin
• THE KING’S SPEECH Frances Hannon
• MADE IN DAGENHAM Lizzie Yianni Georgiou

Black Swan has all the show, while The King’s Speech and Made in Dagenham have the period element to get right. Alice in Wonderland’s vibrant oddness may have caught some of the voter’s attention, but I still can’t warm to Johnny Depp’s psychotic ice-cream sellers pallor, but hey Helena Bonham Carter’s barnet was great fun, so let’s see…

19.21 – The award goes to The Social Network.

19.20 – Next award – Editing.

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Jon Harris
• BLACK SWAN Andrew Weisblum
• INCEPTION Lee Smith
• THE KING’S SPEECH Tariq Anwar
• THE SOCIAL NETWORK Angus Wall, Kirk Baxter

There’s a good chance Andrew Weisblum will take this for Black Swan, I was blown away by the work done on Aronofsky’s film, though Christopher Nolan’s man of choice Lee Smith may be walking away with it, despite some negative reaction from certain knowledgeable UK bloggers… Fun fact – Lee Smith was the Editor on Robocop 2.

19.19 – Inception wins Best Sound. Hmmm. It’s clear the Academy does not agree with me.

19.18 – Best Sound!

Nominees

• 127 HOURS Glenn Freemantle, Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke, Steven C Laneri, Douglas Cameron
• BLACK SWAN Ken Ishii, Craig Henighan, Dominick Tavella
• INCEPTION Richard King, Lora Hirschberg, Gary A Rizzo, Ed Novick
• THE KING’S SPEECH John Midgley, Lee Walpole, Paul Hamblin
• TRUE GRIT Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff, Peter F Kurland, Douglas Axtell

It may seem that The King’s Speech has a good chance of picking this one up – given that this aspect is of such import in the story, Colin Firth’s glottal impotence is so fascinating. Black Swan’s seductive, tenebrous tones did much to evoke an incredibly ominous atmosphere so that’s my pick. Let’s see if the Academy agrees with me…

19.16 – Best Short Animation goes to Michael Please for The Eagleman Stag. He takes the stage. Says ‘Crikey.’ Love it.

19.15 – Wright and Kondeatis look so chuffed to be there. Good for them.

19.13 – Winner for Best Short Film is Until the River Runs Red – Paul Wright, Poss Kondeatis. I was right about that name then.

19.12 -Next two awards are Best Short Film and Best Short Animation.

Short Film

Nominees

• CONNECT Samuel Abrahams, Beau Gordon
• LIN Piers Thompson, Simon Hessel
• RITE Michael Pearce, Ross McKenzie
• TURNING Karni Arieli, Saul Freed, Alison Sterling, Kat Armour-Brown
• UNTIL THE RIVER RUNS RED Paul Wright, Poss Kondeatis

Showing a level of ignorance unbecoming to a film website writer I’ve not seen the nominees for this award so I’ll pick a name from the hat and say Until the River Runs Red because of the name. Yeah, I know…

Short Animation

Nominees

• THE EAGLEMAN STAG Michael Please
• MATTER FISHER David Prosser
• THURSDAY Matthias Hoegg

Continuing my epic failure to see the nominees for this category I will say that I love that these categories exist to be shined upon by Bafta’s big spotlight – stars of the future right here. Just wonder if these will make it to the live broadcast, or will the Beeb deem them superfluous?

19.10 – Much deserved award there – Desplat makes a very gracious speech – Colin Firth is the man’s lucky charm.

19.09 – The award goes to – The King’s Speech.

19.07 – First Award is Best Music – Sir Paul McCartney takes the stage.

Best Music

Nominees

• 127 HOURS AR Rahman
• ALICE IN WONDERLAND Danny Elfman
• HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON John Powell
• INCEPTION Hans Zimmer
• THE KING’S SPEECH Alexandre Desplat

It’s clear that there’s a lot of love for Hans Zimmer’s imposing score for Inception, though personally I enjoyed AR Rahman’s work with 127 Hours. I interviewed The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper and we spoke about the collaboration between him and Alexandre Despalt and how the composer sought to use the music in conjunction with the silences to really get the most out of Colin Firth’s performance and it worked wonders. John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon was also lauded so it’s anyone’s guess…

19.05 – Just a few moments of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World in the opening montage reminds me to watch that film again.

19.02 – Jonathan Ross makes the obligatory ‘give his right arm’ joke for 127 Hours. Class act.

18.59 – After the Orange Gulliver’s Travels advert a man is breakdancing onstage to The Nutcracker Suite. We’re off!

18.57 – Almost there…

18.51 – Not long now until the ceremony begins. Our man Dave has taken his seat and can see this…

18.23 – Arrivals on the red carpet are slowing and the ceremony is not too far away – keep hitting refresh for all the awards as they happen…

It has been a very strong year for film and British film in particular with debuts from Chris Morris, Gareth Edwards and Banksy offering audiences something exciting and original. The main films in contention are Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, David Fincher’s The Social Network and Darren Aronofsky’s sublime psychological thriller Black Swan, but there are many more films looking to be honoured tonight.

Will this be the year for The King’s Speech, with Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush all being nominated for the acting awards, with Tom Hooper up for Best Director, or will Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours repeat the success of Slumdog Millionaire for the director?

The five Best Film nominees are all given this amazing treatment with The King’s Speech piece standing out particularly. I can’t find out who designed these, though I’ll endeavour to update the post when the awards are over but for now here are the five pictures which set the tone for the night perfectly. You can check out the whole brochure here.

I’ll be updating live from the awards tonight so look out for the post when it goes up and keep your finger on the refresh button to learn all the news as it happens.

In the meantime, images are below so get clicking…

And in an age where CGI is overly abundant, overused and over obvious it’s even more applaudable that Aronofsky and the team at LOOK EFFECTS created such seamless FX work that watching the film it’s nigh on impossible to tell what’s CG and what’s not.

With that in mind Fox Searchlight have recently released this short video that highlights many of the major FX sequences within the film from such simple fare as removing crew members from the shot and cleaning up the set to compositing, green screen work, head replacement and Natalie Portman’s animated CG wings. With the film containing 240 visual effects shots it’s all highly impressive stuff and begs the question why did the Academy not see fit to nominate the film for Best Visual Effects alongside the likes of “Inception”, “Harry Potter” and, god forbid, the crass CGI overkill of “Alice in Wonderland”?

And should you be eager to learn more about LOOK EFFECTS stunning achievements then I highly recommend heading over to fxguide and reading their more extensive article here

Oh, and it goes without saying that if you’ve yet to watch the film I’d suggest you skip the video for now as it contains a hefty dosage of SPOILERS …

So hot right now”. She justly grabbed herself a Golden Globe earlier this week for her performance in Black Swan (check out our review here) and was announced today to be up for a BAFTA for the same role. She is back in the blockbuster zone for the first time in a while in this summer’s upcoming Thor, this trailer for Your Highness shows she can deftly handle comedy as well and on top of all of that we have another affecting dramatic performance to look forward to, with The Other Woman.

As we showed with the trailer over Christmas, it is looking like being another hugely impactful role for Portman, which if the trailer is anything to go by, eschews cliché and sentiment and adroitly conveys the frustration and despair of trying (and failing) to connect with a step-child. Apple have added a new clip, which in a remarkably short period of time conveys an awful lot about the characters, their backgrounds and the inherent difficulties and hurt that result from fractured families and relationships.

This film is already shaping up to be powerful, potent stuff and the release date cannot come soon enough. Honestly, brains (she has a degree from Harvard and speaks six languages), beauty, talent, versatility. Portman isn’t yet out of her 20′s and is already one of the most accomplished actresses working today. She clearly has a phenomenal career ahead of her.

We’ll bring you news on the release date as soon as we can.

The vivid and gripping Black Swan is one part Jungian psycho thriller, one part horror movie, and one part backstage drama, and while not the masterpiece some have proclaimed it to be, it’s a throughly entertaining ride, driven by an enthralling and very physical performance from Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman.

Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is a dancer with a New York ballet company, a clearly neurotic young woman who is nonetheless an ambitious perfectionist. The company’s bullying artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to stage a reimagined version of ‘Swan Lake’ to launch their new season, and he seizes the opportunity to bring a dancer up from the ranks to replace the company’s aging prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) in the dual lead roles of the Swan Queen (the White and Black Swans). After narrowing the field amongst the company’s very competitive soloists, who all desperately want the role, Thomas chooses Nina for the lead. While she is perfect as the virginal and pure White Swan, the question remains whether Nina can find and embrace within herself the darkness required to effectively portray the villain of the piece, the Black Swan.

The film cleverly plays out the duality that is the heart of the story (good/evil, black/white, introversion/extroversion) through constant visual doubling and POV shots seen as reflections; it would be an amusing exercise to count the number of times Nina scrutinises herself in windows and mirrors (a new drinking game, perhaps). All of the other key women in the film, who represent either an aspect of her character or a potential outcome for a ballerina, strongly resemble Nina also: her mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), a former dancer who smothers her daughter while pushing her to have the kind of celebrated career she didn’t have; the earthy and uninhibited Lily (Mila Kunis), the extrovert to Nina’s introvert; and prima ballerina Beth, depressed and unable to accept that her career is at an end.

Pushed by her mother and Thomas to succeed at all costs, and pulled by the beguiling (and possibly threatening) Lily to unleash her sensuality by indulging in hedonistic abandon, Nina struggles to engage with her shadow and become the complete artist she desperately longs to be. As her tentative grip on reality loosens, the reliability of Nina’s point of view gradually disintegrates as she begins to see herself not just in reflective surfaces, but literally in the faces of others. Natalie Portman’s delicate beauty has always suggested fragility, and it has never been utilised more effectively than it is here; the great supporting players certainly hold their end up, but every one of the film’s 110 minutes belong to Ms. Portman, who shoulders the burden of her role with complete commitment.

Black Swan owes a small debt to Roman Polanski’s mid ’60s masterpiece Repulsion, another tale of a repressed beauty’s psychological breakdown as she struggles to deal with her baser instincts; the scenes of Nina walking the narrow halls of the apartment she shares with her mother feel like a direct nod to the claustrophobic halls of Catherine Deneuve’s apartment. There are hints of David Cronenbergian body horror as well, with bizarre physical transformation that harks back to The Fly and wince inducing shots of damaged digits and other mangled flesh. Composer Clint Mansell does his part to up the film’s shock ante too, blending Tchaikovsky’s dramatic ‘Swan Lake’ with his own score, laying great stabs, slashes and punches of music over top of the film’s ‘behind you!’ moments.

The film’s sheer visual and aural bombast does mean that it teeters on the brink of overwrought many times, and as clever as it is, its technical precision feels too mechanical and calculated at times. For me, director Aronofsky has yet to surpass his eyeball-searing, stomach-churning addiction drama Requiem For a Dream, but Black Swan is an intriguing, and, dare I say it, fun film, and the wonderful Natalie Portman is fully deserving of the many accolades and statuettes she will receive during the current awards season (even if that does mean my own favourite Jennifer Lawrence being beaten out).

***~~ (3/5)

A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.
