We here at HeyUGuys are big fans of Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, so when we were given the chance to use the costume actually worn by Aaron Johnson in the film we decided we had to make something special.

A few weeks ago we took to the streets of London, with our Editor Dave Sztypuljak gamely adorned in the Kick-Ass suit to make the video you can see below.

To help us in our endeavour we enlisted the help of the very best real life superheroes we could find, they are: S.O.S., Kid X, the grey masked telepath (from the future) Suplex and Dr. Amazing and General Bovine from our favourite Superhero rock band, Justice Force 5.

Big thanks to Bleeding Cool and Ben Mortimer who overcame his enormous hangover to produce the video expertly.

With the DVD of Kick-Ass hitting the streets across the pond tomorrow The New York Post have given us a peek inside the extra features with a look at the crimson caped crusader – Red Mist.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse did a great job in the film as the wayward rich kid who takes up the fight alongside Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass and the fact that this film didn’t do the business it should have in the States is kind of a sore point, so I’m hoping that our American cousins give this film a chance on DVD.

With news of a sequel leaking out I think it’s time to reignite the homemade superhero flame and enjoy Kick-Ass all over again.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed Ben Stiller’s dramatic turn in Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg (I really can’t tell you -I’m staring down the barrel of the embargo gun currently), but Adam Sandler’s role in Judd Apatow’s Funny People brought about shades of Tony Hancock to the usual gross out comedies of recent years, and I loved what this and Greenberg have done for two of the foremost comedic actors working.

So, on hearing the news that Dennis Dugan is reuniting with Adam Sandler to direct the skewed rom com Jack and Jill pricks the balloon in my face. The premise is all about identical twins, a boy and a girl (both played by Sandler, hear me? Both…) who fall in love. The question on every blogger’s lips is ‘will the love affair be kept in the family?’ I’m not sure Hollywood has come far enough to enjoy a romantic comedy clothed in incestuous sheets, but who knows – it’ll certainly make it more interesting.

Cinema Blend had Dugan confirm the rumour that he would reunite with Sandler, with whom he has made the films Happy Gilmore, Grown Ups, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, Big Daddy and the pretty misguided I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry. See – now go out and watch Greenberg please.

As many of you know, I’m currently in San Francisco to visit Pixar and to attend Wondercon. What I realised pretty rapidly after arriving was that Kick-Ass doesn’t come out in the US for another couple of weeks. Lionsgate (who are distributing it in the US) have a stand at Wondercon attended by some rather scantily clad pretty ladies doing their best to sell the movie.

This new retro Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) poster connects the others that we’ve seen previously nicely and we have to give massive credit to the guys who’ve been designing all the artwork for Kick-Ass over the previous months.

This is perhaps the last piece of my Kick-Ass puzzle, after reviews, previews, premieres and interviews this week HeyUGuys finally got a chance to pour over the source material for Matthew Vaughn’s incendiary film which opens in the UK today.

Written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita Jr. Kick-Ass finds these two masters at the top of their game, and they have created something which every fan of the movie needs to read. It has within its two hundred pages a story of such violent velocity, with a narrative which diverges from the movie in a few crucial ways and is a reminder that even the superhero genre can undergo a reinvention every once in a while.

I’m a relatively new comic book fan, and my pre-Watchmen experience revolved around the Beano and Roy of the Rovers and the odd copy of 2000 AD slapping the front door mat on a Saturday morning, and though I’m fairly well versed in Moore’s work  I can’t claim any special knowledge for the tradition of Marvel and DC, merely watching as a number of high profile movies come and go endlessly.

Kick-Ass is different though, and reading the comics alongside the thorough Creating the Comic/Making the Movie tie-in provides a fascinating look at how Millar and Romita Jr. came to realise their story.

You’ll know the story and you may have already seen the film, but there is a joy in going back to the source and Kick-Ass the comic book is as funny, violent and subversive as its movie adaptation, with a harsher edge to some of the relationships and exists perfectly in its own right.

What was most interesting to me was the changes evident between the two, and I wont spoil it for you but there’s a difference in one couple’s fate which pinpoints the difference between the vision of Millar and Vaughn.

I dashed through the book in about a day, it’s a kinetic and brutal tale, told brilliantly by masters of the form, and if you’re a fan of comic books, or Kick-Ass as a movie, I can’t recommend this enough. Blood and guts fly with abandon, the characters are engaging and witty, and the superhero genre gets itself a fair kick in the ass. Like the movie, this is essential.

It was a great night in London’s Leicester Square and the crowds turned out in screaming droves to see the stars of Kick-Ass turn up for its European premiere.

The rain didn’t spoil anyone’s fun, and HeyUGuys took their spot on the red carpet to interview all the cast and creative minds behind what it sure to be one of the biggest hits of the year.

We spoke to Kick-Ass himself, Aaron Johnson, he was joined by Hit-Girl Chloe Moretz and, completing the crime fighting trio, Christopher Mintz-Plasse were all on great form and were joined by Mark Strong who charmed the crowds and took the time to answer our questions.

You may have seen the photos we took on the red carpet and here’s your chance to see our footage of the stars as they arrive and stop on their way inside to talk exclusively to us.

We also chat with the talented team behind the comic book, writer Mark Millar and illustrator John Romita Jr. and we catch up with screenwriter Jane Goldman (and, briefly, her husband Jonathan Ross), you can see all of these people right here.

The moment is finally upon us – the long awaited Kick-Ass has had its European premiere this evening and HeyUGuys were there to cheer this one on.

The stars of the film turned out in the pouring rain to meet the fans – Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Aaron Johnson were greeted with cheers from a very enthusiastic crowd, as was a HeyUGuys favourite, Mark Strong, and Jane Goldman walked the carpet with a very proud Jonathan Ross behind her.

There was a real sense of occasion and those of us that have seen the film know that this is one hype fuelled monster which won’t disappoint.

Our pictures are below, so we hope you enjoy them. Rumours of an appearance by Brad Pitt, who is a producer on the film, were rife among the crowds and while he did turn up he stayed close to the fans and away from the press, which is fair enough and the crowds went crazy when he arrived (we’re wondering if he’s talking to Guy Ritchie about Sherlock Holmes 2?).

We’ve done a lot of Kick-Ass coverage over the last few months, podcasts, posters and trailers, and they’ll be more to come. We spoke exclusively to screenwriter Jane Goldman and that interview will be up on the site shortly, as will our exclusive red carpet interviews where we talk to the cast and crew of Kick-Ass – these interviews should be up later tonight so keep checking back.

We’re counting down the days until we get to see Kick-Ass again, and you’ll be able to hear our thoughts on a special Kick-Ass edition of our Podcast, Mouth Off, which we’ve just finished recording. So, to whet your appetite one more time we’re pleased to give you a look at the final trailer for this fantastic film.

Those attending the South by SouthWest (SXSW) festival this year will get a chance to see the film in advance of its April release and those lucky few will also get a few more wonderful Kick-Ass moments as MTV have debuted the first of three exclusive festival posters, the first of which is included below.

They also detail the Kick-Ass panel which will consist of Director Matthew Vaughn, creator Mark Millar and John Romita Jr and Kick-Ass, Red Mist and Hit Girl themselves, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz. Sounds cool right?

It is a blessing and a curse to have seen the finished version of Kick-Ass movie. I feel very lucky to have seen the film yet I am bound by embargo and cannot talk about my feelings towards the film, which is exactly what I want to do, because Kick-Ass, if nothing else, will provoke debate.

The good people at Titan Books sent me a copy of what is often referred to as a Movie tie-in, but Kick-Ass Creating the comic, Making the Movie is so much more than that. While the on-set photos and film stills will entice the avid Kick-Ass devotee it is the story told by the main players in the Kick-Ass story which makes this essential reading.

Mark Millar, who wrote the Kick-Ass comic book has a lot to say about his initial ideas and the conversations and emails he had with director Matthew Vaughn and scriptwriter Jane Goldman are reproduced here, and the journey from thought to page, and page to screen is told with honesty and a sharp sense of humour.

The book’s main selling point will be the exclusive look at many of the sets, characters and production stills which litter this book. Anyone wanting a sneak peak at the movie will pour over the collision of original comic book art and the photos on offer.

There is concept art, rejected character designs and very early mind maps from the inception of this most violent and subversive of comic book properties. All of the main actors give their take on casting, costumes, stunts and the over the top violence of the material, and there is a tangible love for the project which comes through on every page.

If you’re in anyway looking forward to Kick-Ass, or a fan of the comic book this is a great book for you. John Romita Jr.’s artwork is fierce and compelling and you’ll get the chance to see some of the scenes storyboarded out with commentary from the production team.

This is great work, so much more than an extended piece of advertising – it is a lovingly created, outstandingly delivered look into the production of one of the most exciting pieces of work in the comic book world, and will leave you even more excited, if that’s possible, for Kick-Ass the movie.

The fever pitch surrounding this film almost precludes the necessity of writing anything other than the title to this post.

If you’re looking forward to Matthew Vaughn’s comic book adaptation Kick-Ass then you’ll love this new red band (18+ for us Brits) trailer for the film, which contains a lot of the footage we’ve seen before but splices in some new stuff we’ve not seen.

There is a tangible excitement to watching the footage Lionsgate are putting out for this one, and if you’re in the mood for a bit of the new ultraviolence on a Friday afternon – why not take a look below.

We’ve seen some great artwork and trailers for Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass and now there’s a new poster for the international market.

Looking very much like the Kick-Ass poster we showed you a few weeks ago, this time though Chloe Moretz’s Hit Girl takes centre stage.

A while ago Hit Girl had her very own red band trailer and it is incredible, and there are few films coming up that we’re looking forward to more. The marketing push has been spot on and the the word we’ve heard, cloaked under embargo of course, is that this film will be well worth the wait.

Coming to cinemas with the charged fury of hype studios would kill for, Kick-Ass is almost upon us and today we got a new look at the new poster for Matthew Vaughn’s Superheros-without-superpowers film.

Out in the UK in two months this darkly comic and outrageously violent movie has blazed a trail of superlatives for its take on the crowded superhero market, and with every new look at the film Kick-Ass looks better and better.

Kick-Ass stars Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Mark Strong and Nicolas Cage. If you’ve not seen the red band Hit Girl trailer, we urge you too but remember, it’s red band for a reason!

To say we’re excited for Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass is to understate the matter slightly.

To be clear, after seeing the new trailer, released today, I was left in no doubt that Kick-Ass will be on every top ten list come the end of 2010. It is a geek paradise, and the trailer is cut so perfectly, hinting at the story of ordinary people suiting up and kicking all kinds of criminal ass with enough snippets of violence and comedy to tease the waiting hordes.

While this won’t be a Dark Knight deconstruction of masks and identity it looks to be the epitome of every comic book geek’s dream, told with a vicious energy and enough style to make it a sure-fire hit when it hits.

It’s a slow week for movie releases, with Fantastic Mr. Fox the only release of note in the UK, along with Cirque Du Freak. Most of the remaining big films this year are due out in November and December.  

So, with the big winter films already hyped to the max, and with Iron Man 2, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood being the highly anticipated movies this Spring, I thought i’d take a look at some Spring movies that maybe aren’t getting the attention they deserve – The Losers, Green Zone, A Couple of Dicks, Machete and Kick-Ass. Note, this is a list of the films i’m personally looking forward to, so you won’t necessarily agree with me…

 The Losers

When is it? – 9th April.
 
Where is it? – Currently filming in Puerto Rico
 
Who is it? – Directed by Sylvain White, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Jason Patric.
 
What is it? – Based on the short lived DC comic series, it follows members of a CIA black ops team that are betrayed and left for dead. The team goes out to hunt down the people that tried to kill them.
 
Why am i excited? – Jeffrey Dean Morgan is brilliant in everything he does, from John Winchester to The Comedian. Zoe Saldana is one of the hottest properties in Hollywood, with roles in this years Star Trek and the upcoming Avatar. And Chris Evans is vastly under-rated, having to try and shine in films like Fantastic Four and Push. The plot actually sounds very similar to next year’s The Expendables, and whilst Sly’s action all-stars will easily out-gross The Losers, the great source material means The Losers should have a much better storyline. Word has it this movie will roughly follow issues 1 to 12, leaving ample material for a franchise if its successful.
 
But? – White is an inexperienced director, with I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer one of his few credits. And writer Peter Berg was responsible for the mess that was Very Bad Things.

 Kick-Ass

Who? – Directed by Matthew Vaughn, and co-written with Mrs Jonathan Ross Jane Goldman. Starring Nicholas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
 
What? - A young schoolboy decides to become a superhero, despite a distinct lack of super powers.
 
Why? – Kick-ass was struggling to find a distributor, due to some slightly questionable content – said to be mainly due to the presence of Hitgirl, an 11 year old schoolgirl assassin. Vaughn took some footage to comic-con, which got a standing ovation, and a bidding war was triggered. Lionsgate won, but considering they’ve been distributor for every Marv Films production (Vaughn’s production company), this wasn’t all that surprising. The leaked trailer showed a fairly even mix of comedy and stylistic action. 

 But? – The team of Vaughn and Goldman achieved success with their first film Stardust, but will have to have stepped up their game for Kick-Ass – Vaughn hasn’t really done action, and worryingly there were rumours he ducked out of X-men as he felt out of his depth.

 Green Zone

When? – 12th March
 
Where? – In the can
 
Who? – Directed by British director Paul Greengrass, and written by Brian Helgeland. Starring Matt Damon, Jason Isaacs, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson.
 
What? - A thriller about a pair of CIA agents on the trail of WMDs, and a foreign correspondent following their mission 
 
Why? – Greengrass has shown great talent for compelling drama with Bloody Sunday and United 93, and great action with Bourne’s Supremacy and Ultimatum. This, coupled with his working relationship with Damon developed during those Bourne films, makes him the perfect man for the job. United 93 was based on a politically and socially sensitive subject, and the majority feel he handled it well. Damon’s career has improved dramatically thanks to his work as Jason Bourne, and this year has shown his diversity with a career performance in Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant. The book it is based on is a non-fictional account of the early days of the invasion of Iraq, when political relations were perched on a knife edge. The book was written by real life journalist, so historic details should be fairly accurate.

But? – Some attendees of very early focus group screenings have criticised perceived overuse of shaky-cam, but the film wrapped some months ago, so there’s been plenty of time for post-production.

 Machete

When? - 16th April (USA)
 
Where? – In post
 
Who? – Written and Directed by Robert Rodriguez, and starring Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Jessica Alba, Robert de Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson.
 
What? – Based on the fake trailer shown between Tarantino and Rodriguez’ Grindhouse double feature of Death Proof and Planet Terror. Based on an idea formed by Rodriguez back during Desperado, the titular Machete, Danny Trejo, is an assassin on the FBI’s payroll. He is double-crossed, and is now out for revenge, pursued by FBI agent Alba.
 
Why? – The trailer is really cool, in a crazy over-the-top kinda way. Word is Rodriguez has cut all the scenes from the trailer into the movie, and built the rest of the story around them. Rodriguez had a big hit with Sin City, which suggested he may be beginning to find his form again. Danny Trejo is due a lead role, following two decades of bit-part characters. Cheech Marin is always great to watch, and is reunited here with Johnson; they’ve worked together in Tin Cup and tv series Nash Bridges.
 
But? – Once Upon a Time in Mexico was a bit off a mess, and the Spy Kids pictures Rodriguez is now known for are as far removed from this kind of movie as you can get.

 A Couple of Dicks/A Couple of Cops – Now Cop Out!

When? – 26th February  

Where? – In post
 
Who? – Directed by Kevin Smith, written by Mark and Robb Cullen. Starring Bruce Willis, Sean William Scott, Michelle Trachtenberg, Adam Brody.
 
What? – The dicks in question are two cops, and the movie follows them through a series of hilarious situations.
 
Why? – This is the first movie Smith has directed that he didn’t write, so he must have been impressed by the screenplay. As listeners of Smith’s Smodcast podcasts know, he is a genuinely funny guy with a great feel for comedy. Despite a career based mainly on action movies, Willis has also shown a talent for comedy. He did, after all, start off in comedy series Moonlighting. After meeting Smith, Bruce took a liking to him and specifically wanted to work with him.
