The forthcoming Tron: Legacy Blu-ray continues to be a spluttering fountain of teasers for the expected third film in the Tron series, Tron 3 (or Tr3N or Tron: Legacy: Legacy – if you must), which of course hasn’t been confirmed by Disney but doesn’t seem in any real doubt does it?

The first teaser video was a rather more substantial look at life after Tron: Legacy and this clip, uploaded by the same Anton Volkov who made friends at Disney with his last video, is a less showy affair but features the character Cillian Murphy played in the second film, that of Edward Dillinger Jr, and his father, played by David Warner, and hints at trouble ahead for Encom.

Both this and the last video are only really worth watching if you’ve seen the events of Tron: Legacy unfold, and if you’re looking forward to seeing more Tron then I suspect you’ll like what you see here.

This, we are reliably informed, is the first of two teasers for a third Tron film (or Tr3N if you must) and if you a fan of Tron and its legacy then you’ll simply eat this up.

FirstShowing lived up to their name and now we all have the chance to find out what happened after Tron: Legacy packed up and went home – and this is clearly the first strike in a coming campaign to get us excited for another Tron film despite Legacy looking pretty but offering nothing as substantial as plot or narrative excitement.

Promised as a Blu-ray/DVD extra, this video is pretty cool to watch, and if you read the description on the Youtube page then there are hints as to what the other DVD Easter Eggs will contain. There are hints here which would confirm a story we ran last year about the next Tron film. Breath baited, etc.

It may have been out in the cinema for a couple of weeks but Disney’s Tron: Legacy is still pulling me in with all the cool stuff that we have coming out for the movie. Last week, we posted Buzz on the grid which, although was unofficial, was still pretty awesome!

Today I’ve found this new featurette for the Joseph Kosinski directed movie which focuses on the light-suits and interviews costume designer, Christine Clarke as she talks about just how cool they were to design and make. In this featurette, we get to see the stars of the movie, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde talk about working in the suits and how they found it.

Last week, I got to see the very first UK screening of Disney’s new tent pole movie, Tron: Legacy. The hype for the movie had been building over the past 12 months with various trailers and marketing telling us that this could be the coolest movie we see all year! Disney had arranged the first screening to be at the Waterloo IMAX which is a fantastic venue, and we were told that the print we were watching was the only IMAX print in the world.  All impressive stuff but read on to find out if it deserves the title as the coolest film of 2010… and to find out if it’s any good!

It is probably fair to say that most people won’t know where the Tron franchise has come from – or that it is indeed a franchise. After telling my friends that I’d just been to see Tron: Legacy, most of them looked blankly at me when I told them it’s actually a sequel to the 1982,  Steven Lisberger directed movie with the title ‘Tron’. Back in ’82, Tron was a huge cult movie which still has a massive following although most of them were quiet until the computer game commercial director, Joseph Kosinski, created a rather fantastic promo as a proof of concept at Comic Con back in 2008. What he created wowed fans and the hype went mad! With Disney bosses overjoyed at the response, Tron: Legacy was green-lit and now, in 2010, we have the finished product.

Tron: Legacy stars Jeff Bridges who returns as Kevin Flynn (and the character of Clu 2.0 but more on that later), Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen, Beau Garrett, Bruce Boxleitner and relative newcomer, Garett Hedlund. Hedlund plays the character of Sam Flynn, the son of legendary game creator, Kevin Flynn.

The movie opens with an immensely cool sequence where the Disney Magic Kingdom is completely made out of computer ‘bits’ and immediately had me excited with what was to come. We start in the real world where Kevin Flynn (Bridges) is the owner of computer company, Encom. Flynn has made his name from creating computer games Space Paranoids and Tron (see the 1982 version for the full lowdown) and is happy in life with his son who has a bedroom kited out with Tron merchandise from the past 20 years! Bridges has his back to us for most of the scene which is used to tell the audience who know nothing about the original Tron, exactly what’s going on – plus telling his son about The Grid. As the scene approaches it’s close, Flynn turns around to face Sam, revealing his face and showing the audience that he’s 20 years younger than Bridges actually is now. Cut to the News report following to reveal that after he left Sam that night, he wasn’t seen again, with rumours that he’s skipped the country through not being able to take the pressure, or has been killed with his body missing.

Moving on 20 years, we get to see Sam now much older and with a real attitude and a gripe against the world, blaming his father for all the misfortune he’s had in his life. Now the film really begins with a rather cool opening sequence where we see Sam infiltrating Encom for his ‘yearly visit’. Throughout this sequence, we get to see exactly where all our main characters are now within the world and within the organisation of Encom, who are about to release their new Operating System known as OS12. Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) is now on the board of Encom while we get a little cameo from a well known, uncredited Irish actor who I won’t name but plays Dillinger’s son – see if you can spot him.

After causing quite a few problems at Encom, Bradley pays a visit to Sam’s digs to tell him that he’s received a page from his father and that it came from Kevin Flynn’s arcade which hasn’t been open for 20 years. Cue the biggest little dog that you’ve ever seen on a cinema screen (especially at an IMAX!).  Throughout this opening scene (which does pass by pretty quickly) you’re just desperate to get into the stunning visuals that we’ve seen in all the trailers, and it doesn’t take long before Sam finds himself on The Grid which his father told him about all those years ago. The mission now, how does he get out?!

Now, onto the cool stuff! Where do I start with the coolness of Tron: Legacy?

The Visuals

Part of the sell for Tron: Legacy has to be the visuals. We’ve all gotten used to CGI as it’s been around for quite a while now but director Joseph Kosinski knew that the visuals were key to the look of the movie. By enlisting digital effects house, Digital Domain (founded by James Cameron and now owned by Michael Bay) he was able to not only create some of the most stunning visuals I’ve ever seen in a movie but also manage to make Jeff Bridges 20 years younger!

The Light Cycles were made famous in the original movie too with a trail of light being created wherever they go to create an extremely dangerous game which, if hit, would destroy you. Kosinski was very clever with the set design as a lot of it was real sets and not all CGI. He would create much of the platform on which the actors stand and then green screens would complete the structure so that we, the audience, never notice.

The Light Disc battle, the Light Jets and the Light Cars were all new for Tron: Legacy and were fantastic additions to the movie. Kosinski had brought concept car designer (Daniel Simon) on board who quit his job to come and work on the movie and was able to create some of the most amazing new vehicles, none of which disappointed. I think if you went into the movie just to look at the vehicle concept and not look at the story at all, you’d have to give it 10/10.

My one criticism of the Light-Bikes was in the way parts of it were shot. Often the cameras were too close to the subject making it hard to see exactly what was going on but overall, the exhibition of ‘Light’ was rather mesmerizing!

The Light disc fight was one of my personal favourites parts of the movie with the competitors ending up in a billion pieces on the floor if they got hit by the disc. Digital Domain spared no expense in getting these sequences 100% right and they simply looked fantastic.

One element that was quite hard to get used to was Clu’s CGI face. Yes it did look pretty realistic but there was something about it that you could never shake off, and although it was only his head that was actually moulded in a computer, it still felt like you were watching a CGI model of someone and I’m not sure I ever fully got used to it.

I could talk all day about each visual concept in detail but suffice to say, you wont be disappointed if you want to see a lot of cool looking neon in this movie!

The 3D

After seeing the movie, there were numerous comments from people saying that this is the best 3d that they’ve seen in a movie. I didn’t really notice the 3D standing out but then I think that’s probably as good thing, this 3D does work and when you’re immersed in the Light Cycle battle or the Light Discs, you’ll absolutely love it. Filming in 3d rather than doing it in post is most definitely the way to go if you can achieve results like this!

The Score

The Score has been produced by Daft Punk and man, have they done a good job with it!! The hype for the Official SoundTrack (OST) has been almost as big as it has been for the film itself and the pair of French artists even get a little cameo in the movie. Although their soundtrack plays throughout the movie, there was one scene where Michael Sheen asks them to ‘Electrify’ the End of the Line club, and just as the music kicks in, they cut to another room within the club compeltely drowning out the music. Was a bit disappointing (due to the amazing build-up by Sheen) but I’ll just have to buy the OST and crank it up when I’ve got my copy!

The Costumes

In 1982, to get the effect of having light inside the costumes, each frame had to be hand-drawn and coloured into the final product before it could be placed on screen. Each cell was sent over to Asia to complete this work and it was obviously extremely expensive and time consuming. Fortunately for Kosinski, computers have advanced somewhat although it may surprise some of you to hear that the costumes were actually built with the lights inside them, much like the technology for the Motorola Razr phone which came out a couple of years ago.

The costume design was again, visually stunning with every suit built to match the body shape of each actor after being digitally scanned into a computer and then created on a CNC process (find out more about that process and costume design in general here).

The Cast

OK, down to the nitty gritty, how did they all perform? Overall, pretty well. Jeff Bridges was absolutely brilliant and delivered some killer lines including ‘radical man’ (no, I’m not lying!) and so much of the young, not-a-care-in-the-world attitude that we saw in the first movie really came through, although it was hard not to mix that up with his character as ‘The Dude’ in The Big Lebowski. Seeing him back in the world of Tron will pleased so many people and it was a joy to see him embrace the character. Even though it was shot 30 years ago, it really felt like he was pleased to be back, especially since this sort of role is probably so far removed from the roles we see him in nowadays. This performance just goes to show what a great and diverse actor he really is, especially as he has to play two parts in the movie.

Another excellent performance comes from Michael Sheen, and just like Jeff Bridges, the man never puts a foot wrong. I was talking with my fellow blogger friends about this afterwards and we’ve all come out with a different opinion on who he’s trying to portray. For me, I saw loads of Gene Wilder in his character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with his cane being swung around his arm and his leg crossed as he walked along.

Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde performed well together and there was really good chemistry on the screen between the actors. The problem for me was the dodgy lines which Hedlund was given. They just didn’t fit in the script and made the audience laugh when he delivered them. The cheesy one liners which if they hadn’t been put in there, would have been fine. Olivia Wilde is an wonderful upcoming actress and there’s a reason that she’s appearing in so many big budget movies over the next year. In Tron: Legacy, she has a great childlike quality to her playing the role of Quorra, a program living on The Grid who is desperate to find out about the ‘real world’ and meeting Sam for the first time is a real proof that the ‘real world’ exists after living with Jeff Bridges for so many years.

The supporting cast including Beau Garrett and James Frain were all really well cast and I couldn’t fault their performances. One slight downside to the casting was Bruce Boxleitner. He was completely underused and I was really hoping that we’d see a lot of him in the sequel to the movie which really, was named after him. You will see him after the opening sequences in the ‘real world’ but in my opinion, not enough.

The Storyline

This is where negatives come into my review I’m afraid as the storyline did need some work. It seems that not even Pixar-guru John Lasseter (who was rumoured to have had a go at rewriting it) could make it more compelling. The basic storyline is Sam goes in, Sam needs to get out again with a load of challenges in the middle to get him there. And yes, the Light-Cycles, Light-Discs and Light-Jets are all cool but it felt like they were just thrown in at sporadic points. I think it lacked originality and with nearly 30 years to write a script, it could have been a little bit more structured and had a few more twists.

Don’t let this put you off to much though because when you do get the all the different ‘Light’ sections, you’ll be absolutely loving them!

Overall

Overall, if you’re looking for an action packed movie that has every element of ‘cool’ that you could ever want in it, then this is the movie you need to see in 2010. There’s no need to have seen the original movie but if you’re a fan of the Tron, then this is a good followup and stays very true to the 1982 version. The storyline lets it down somewhat but just keep your focus on Jeff Bridges and Michael Sheen for some excellent performances. Another little tip is to keep watching the bar at the End of the Line club to see if you can spot another cameo from someone instrumental in the Tron movie(s).

There were quite a few nods to the original movie with comments like ‘Man, that is a big door’ coming from Sam following in his fathers footsteps and as a movie that has been in the making within Joe Kosinski’s head for the past 30 years, he has done a good job, just a shame about the storyline. However Tron: Legacy is a must watch – especially if you’re a fan of neon!

Tron: Legacy is released in UK and US cinemas 17th December.

Soundworks Collection have got a fantastic 9 minute featurette which looks in detail at the sound of Tron: Legacy speaking with Sound Re-Recording Mixer Gary Rizzo, Supervising Sound Editor Gwen Yates Whittle, and Sound Designer Steve Boeddeker. The sound in the movie is simply awesome and this featurette gives us so much detail in how it was achieved along with the musical duo, Daft Punk who provided the soundtrack for the movie and if you haven’t heard, you should and can buy it here. IN the featurette, we also get to see quite a bit of behind the scenes footage of shooting on the set of the movie.

Tonight was always going to end up in a London hotspot, decked out in blue neon with Felix B, one of the duo who form Basement Jaxx pounding our ears at the Tate Modern which played host for the after-show party.

The arrival of Disney’s Tron: Legacy was always going to turn heads, its design is brilliantly futuristic and the production design and original soundtrack from Daft Punk have teased the fans long enough, and the UK premiere held in Leicester Square was a fantastic event with cast and crew on hand to give the legion of Tron fans (who haven’t got a collective term so far) something to talk about.

Upon entering the Tate, we were thrust into a space full to the brim with models dressed as characters from the movie and surrounded by multiple lasers (which I’ve just found out created the largest ever laser display in the UK!) which filled the gigantic space while the heavy bass created by The Official Soundtrack (which is out today too by the way) filled the huge space to create an electrifying atmosphere!

The room had Flynn’s Arcade set up where you could play the new Tron: Evolution on Xbox or go and have eye-lashes done like a Siren! I decided just to try the former and skip the eyelash extensions – I’ll save that for next time!

Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, vehicle designer Daniel Simon and director, Joseph Kosinski were all at the party for a short while before heading back off to their hotel for a full day of junkets today.  Some of the official photos from this evening are placed below too.

I’d never been to and aftershow party before and Disney have set the bench very high if ever I go to another! Last night saw the UK Premiere of Tron: Legacy, the brand new Disney movie which sees Jeff Bridges return as Kevin Flynn, 28 years after Tron was released. Our coverage for the movie has been rather extensive and you can keep track of it all here.

I got to chat with various members of the cast and production team last night, one of them being Brigham Taylor who was the Production Executive on the movie. I asked him if he cameoed at all in the movie and he answered that you might be able to spot him in one of the opening scenes around the board table which led me to ask him about that same scene where Irish actor, Cillian Murphy who we’ve most recently seen in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, also appears briefly.

Murphy, who played Edward Dillinger (son of Ed Dillinger who appears in the original Tron) in the movie, isn’t credited at all which seemed strange since his status is now so high. I asked Taylor about this, he replied:

“No I guess that’s true. That was by design. That was little tit-bit we didn’t need slipping out early. He’s a character that fits into the mythology of Tron. He’s connected to one of the characters from the past and we’re really exited to have him involved in the way he way.”

When asked about who approached who he replied:

“We were talking to him about other things and it had come up so he knew we were out there doing our thing so when the opportunity arose it was a mutual admiration, so it worked really well.

If we tells more stories he’s the guy that could be involved.”

So there you have it. Not only have they got a possible cast lined up for a Tron: Legacy sequel, it sounds like they might even have a story which has been planted in our minds from this movie. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Twenty eight years after our first dalliance with Kevin Flynn and the digitopolis of Tron, we return to Flynn’s Arcade once more for Tron: Legacy.

Joseph Kosinski’s film comes after a long production, and Disney have made sure we’re kept up to date with a marketing assault unlike any other and today the cast and crew were on hand in London’s Leicester Square to present the UK Premiere.

I braved the cold and got to chat to Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and the director, and he’ll upload his photos from the event for you to enjoy. You can read my review of the film right here,  and our good friends at Upbeat were on hand to record the proceedings as Tron: Legacy came to the UK.

I also got to talk with vehicle designer, Daniel Simon about his vehicle design who spoke about working on the project and the his new Tron TV series for the Disney channel which is going to follow the movie working again alongside director, Joseph Kosinski. Meeting the legend that is Jeff Bridges was just amazing and the hand which he shoot won’t be washed ever again….. that is until my wife tells me I have to!

Bridges spoke about the rumours of a new movie which has been talked about over the past 30 years. He said that he’s always been interested in doing a sequel and it just needed the opportunity to present itself and now the chance came along. He wanted to know who would direct it and what the storyline would entail.

That event was a 20 minute sneak peak at Tron: Legacy (which many of you will now have seen at the various Tron Nights around the world) and the chance to meet some of the actors and film-makers behind this fabulous project!

Over the course of the next month (until the film’s release on 17th December), we’ll be bringing you interviews, videos and images from the visit where we packed so much in that I ran out of tape on my video camera (yeah, it is still tape I’m afraid!).

The first of the pieces was an interview with Director, Joseph Kosinski where we talk about how he got involved in the project and how he used his computer game commercial background to create such a fine looking film. The second of our interviews was an exclusive chat with Producer, Justin Springer where we talked about his role as Producer and what that actually means on a day to day basis.

Then we spoke with one of the stars of the movie, Olivia Wilde who told us how she got involved in the project, how she developed her character and and what she thinks of Twitter and more recently, we spoke with leading man, Garrett Hedlund who told us how he was cast and what was so great about making the movie.

Now we get down to my favourite footage that I gathered while I was there – the production design. This is the part of all film making which interests me most. How things are conceived and then brought to life by the clever people working with the latest software to make movies that look like this.

While on the blogger day, I was allowed to film the Q&A sessions that were given by Ben Proctor (Art Director), Christine Bieselin Clark (Costume Design), Neville Page (Concept designer – who I then saw a week later at the Avatar event!) and Daniel Simon (Vehicle Designer). Over the course of the next few days / weeks, I’ll bring you a different presentation given by the guys listed here who will show you imagery that you’ve not seen before and talk you through how each part of the movie was conceived, built and ended up looking the way that we now see in the trailers and the finished movie.

Then we spoke with one of the stars of the movie, Olivia Wilde who told us how she got involved in the project, how she developed her character and and what she thinks of Twitter and more recently, we spoke with leading man, Garrett Hedlund who told us how he was cast and what was so great about making the movie.

Now we get down to my favourite footage that I gathered while I was there – the production design. This is the part of all film making which interests me most. How things are conceived and then brought to life by the clever people working with the latest software to make movies that look like this.

While on the blogger day, I was allowed to film the Q&A sessions that were given by Ben Proctor (Art Director), Christine Bieselin Clark (Costume Design), Neville Page (Concept designer – who i then saw a week later at the Avatar event!) and Daniel Simon (Vehicle Designer). Over the course of the next few days / weeks, I’ll bring you a different presentation given by the guys listed here who will show you imagery that you’ve not seen before and talk you through how each part of the movie was conceived, built and ended up looking the way that we now see in the trailers and the finished movie.

Part 1 features Ben Proctor talking us through the art direction, how The Grid fits together and how the original concept all pieced together which mainly stemmed from the teaser that director, Joseph Kosinski had put together from ComicCon a year before.

It is a film that’s long been on the HeyUGuys radar and in a few weeks the world will return to Flynn’s arcade for Disney’s Tron: Legacy.

The marketing blitz for this film has been greater and more constant than any I can remember, with many trailers, images, featurettes, as well as our own coverage for the film, whetting appetites which will finally be sated on the 17th of December when the film is released.

Disney have released this brand new featurette which gives us a rather in-dept, 15 minute look at behind the scenes of their new movie, Tron: Legacy which is released in the UK and US 17th December. I’m seeing it next week at the IMAX and I can’t wait!

In the most recent trailer released for Tron: Legacy, there’s a clip of the Sirens undressing Sam to then put him in his light-suit, ready for battle on the grid. Myspace have this evening released a brand new clip from the movie which shows this scene in full and have named it ‘Sirens Dress Sam’! Not too original I guess!

I recently got to travel to Los Angeles to a rather special day-long event. That event was a 20 minute sneak peak at Tron: Legacy and the chance to meet some of the actors and film-makers behind this fabulous looking project!

Over the course of the next 2 months (until the film’s release on 17th December), we’ll be bringing you interviews, videos and images from the visit where we packed so much in that I ran out of tape on my video camera (yeah, it is still tape I’m afraid!).

The first of the pieces was an interview with Director, Joseph Kosinski where we talk about how he got involved in the project and how he used his computer game commercial background to create such a fine looking film. The second of our interviews was an exclusive chat with Producer, Justin Springer where we talked about his role as Producer and what that actually means on a day to day basis. Then we spoke with one of the stars of the movie, Olivia Wilde who told us how she got involved in the project, how she developed her character and and what she thinks of Twitter!

Today we speak to the leading man, Garrett Hedlund who was fresh of the set of his new movie, On the Road and was dressed in an outfit that proved it! In our interview, he spoke about how he got involved in the project, how he trained for the role and what the coolest part of shooting the movie was.

Here’s a fun little video that Disney.com put together to promote the uber cool looking new movie, Tron: Legacy. While I was out in the US on our Tron: Legacy blogger trip, we got to see around 25 minutes of footage (which sounds the same as the footage that was shown at IMAXs around the country recently). One of the pieces of footage was the scene where Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), gets to meet his son, San Flynn (Garrett Hedland – keep your eyes peeled for our interview with him coming up next week) for the first time. Although it feels like 20 years for Sam, it’s actually been hundreds for Kevin as he’s been locked inside a computer for all that time.

This new clip reminds us that Tron: Legacy really isn’t that far away now and we’re all very excited about it here at HeyUGuys!

It’s almost time for Disney to unleash Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy and I can’t remember a marketing onslaught for a film to be so constant, with new posters and images coming at an alarming rate over the last year.

We’ve seen twenty minutes of footage, spoken to the director , the producer and stars and next month sees the grand unveiling, the return to Flynn’s Arcade for what promises to be a spectacular and visually stunning movie.

So, if your anticipation can take it, there’s a new, and quite possibly final, trailer for Tron: Legacy out today, it has just been released and there’s a lot of new footage on show so give it a click.
