After five years off the air, Punk’d is back, and it sounds like it might be a bit different this time around. The original show was co-created by Ashton Kutcher, and as you no doubt remember, saw him setting up all kinds of pranks on all kinds of famous faces – Justin Timberlake, Seth Green, Usher, Travis Barker, Matthew Perry, Simon Cowell, Kirsten Dunst, Evan Rachel Wood, Dwayne Johnson, Hayden Panettiere; the list goes on.

For the new and ninth season, things are changing, and Kutcher’s passing on the torch to a new set of celebrities to set up the practical jokes. Each episode will be hosted by someone new, with the line-up already announced as including Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber (whose punks should include Taylor Swift), Kellan Lutz, Punk’d’s own Dax Shepard, and my personal favourite so far, Bam Margera. Expect Margera’s episode to pretty much be immense, because it will no doubt look a lot like Jackass, and no doubt involve pranking a lot of his Jackass co-stars.

“Get ready for bigger and better laughs and surprises, when MTV’s groundbreaking hit series ‘Punk’d’ returns for an all-new season on Monday, March 19. The series, which became a pop culture phenomenon, is back, revealing the vulnerable and fun-loving side ofHollywood’s A-list celebrities as only MTV can. This season, Ashton Kutcher is passing the torch to a different celebrity host each week, including Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kellan Lutz, Bam Margera and “Punk’d” alum Dax Shepard, among many others, who will punk their unsuspecting famous friends. Be on the lookout for more of your favorite stars, who will serve as celebrity hosts this season as well, to be revealed soon.”

With thanks to Deadline for the tip-off, MTV revealed more details about the new season last night in their New Year’s Eve program, including a sneak peek of Miley Cyrus and Kelly Osborne punking Khloe Kardashian. The new season is also set to change from the past eight by taking viewers behind the scenes to see how the pranks are set up.

I’m not sure when this will be airing in the UK, but it sounds like it has potential. Getting the celebrity hosts involved in the pranks could be fun, and the Margera episode should be especially great. Here’s a teaser at the Miley Cyrus episode, in which Khloe Kardashian thinks the take-out delivery guy gets himself stuck in the zipper of his trousers. Ouch.

You have to worry when a film’s musical medley finale is far more entertaining than what you’ve just sat through. Another snag for the filmmakers of the equally disappointing Valentine’s Day last year is their biggest star, Robert De Niro, is woefully miscast in the sombre role, when his true comedic talent is apparent in the end sing-song.

You’ve guessed it: it’s nearly ball-dropping time in Times Square, New York City, and a bunch of characters have all sorts of New Year’s resolutions to make and keep, all to do with some form of love: forgiveness, compassion, opening their hearts to a different point of view etc. We follow the 24 hours before the ‘greatest reset button in life’, New Year’s Eve and the big countdown.

Director Garry Marshall and writer Katherine Fugate haven’t learnt their lesson from last time, it seems – or they’re under contract to see this limp franchise through to the bitter end. The problem isn’t attracting an impressive cast – as that’s what the film’s main draw is, what with De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Katherine Heigl and even Jon Bon Jovi on board: One could cynically argue that it’s the easiest money they’ve earned all year, so of course, they’ve signed up. Perhaps it’s their collective love for the Big Apple at this time of year, too?

What is highlighted is too much of a good cast, without proper mini plot development in each scenario just produces a damp squib, with characters we don’t much care for, even if we enjoy seeing the famous faces together in one film. Their characters’ trials and tribulations amount to padding until the countdown, with some great musical numbers from Bon Jovi intermixed for fans. Hence, when the big moment finally comes we should be right there with them all, feeling that renewed hope of a great new year ahead, rather than wishing to reset our own time button to two hours earlier.

We see De Niro wasting away – both in body and mind with such a character; Heigl as the usual ‘bridesmaid and never the bride’ – again; Berry like a worn out extra off ER; Swank running around and mounting her own personal crusade – complete with the ever perfect curl in her hair; and Pfeiffer trying to convince us she’s really plain Jane and uninteresting – well, the latter part is true in this film, even with Efron and his cheeky charms trying to inject some life into her and their scenario of completing her wish list, as though she’s going to snuff it at midnight.

And no film set in New York would be complete without Sarah Jessica Parker running around in killer heels, like she’s doing a small SATC Carrie cameo, and forgotten she’s actually playing a concerned mum to teen Hailey (Abigail Breslin) who just wants to be kissed. Valentine’s Day star Ashton Kutcher plays disinterested New Year’s loather Randy in this, rather than over-enthusiastic flower man Reed in the 2010 film. He’s really only there to set up a singing scene for Glee’s Lea Michele in a knockout red number, and gets to slob it out in PJs, like he’s just got out of bed to make a lacklustre appearance in this.

As a result of too many characters and not enough investment in each, New Year’s Eve also suffers from a frustrating lack of explanation, such as what’s Claire Morgan’s (Swank) deep bond with cop friend Brendan (Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges), and why is she estranged from her father, Stan (De Niro) – among others. To be honest, should we really care?

Apart from Bon Jovi rocking the house and a great vocal performance from Michele, Sofía Vergara – who’s like an annoying Cheeky Girl at the start – makes things hot and steamy in chef Laura’s (Heigl) kitchen, as well as steals the only comedic moments as man-crazy sous chef Ava from Heigl, rendering the latter’s usual comedy presence void.

There are a number of other actors and situations going on, one or more of which ought to strike a chord with whoever is watching. Although the filmmakers’ intentions are all good, the execution results in contrived, groan-inducing morality and over simplicity in parts that just undermines the candour of the lessons learnt. Let’s hope there’s not another date in the Western calendar that Marshall and Fugate can get/have got their hands on – even if it means they keep a few big names in easy work.

The upcoming ensemble romantic-comedy, New Year’s Eve, has got pretty much every face under the sun surrounding the rom-com genre, and I was a little surprised to find myself enjoying the last trailer we saw for the film.

A new poster has now been sent over to us and it’s pretty much just about showing off all the famous faces that you can look forward to seeing in the film.

It’s not really a creative or well thought-out poster, in my books, and is essentially just a pretty unsubtle way of saying, ‘Just in case you don’t know these people by name, here are their very recognisable faces.’

And those faces include, but are not limited to, HalleBerry, Ashton Kutcher, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sofia Veraga, Hilary Swank, Josh Duhamel, Robert De Niro, Lea Michele, and Zac Efron.

Nonetheless, the trailer from a couple of weeks ago was actually pretty feel-good and did have me, somewhat ashamedly, a little intrigued by the project, given that I’m not really its target demographic. Last year’s Valentine’s Day managed to more than quadruple its $50m. budget at the box office, and I wouldn’t be surprised if New Year’s Day has a pretty good run too when it hits cinemas on 9th December this year. Until then, here’s the new poster to enjoy (or be bemused by on account of the total lack of subtlety). As usual, click to enlarge.

At first, I was a little sceptical of the project, but after a surprisingly good first trailer, I became a lot more enthusiastic about it. We’ve now got a great follow-up trailer and poster for the film.

Just like Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Day has got a cast full to the brim of well-known stars that all come together for what could be a pretty great holiday film, including (and you’ll have to forgive me for the length of this list) Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Robert De Niro, Josh Duhamel, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Hilary Swank, and Sofía Vergara.

The music for the first trailer was excellent, with Pink’s Raise Your Glass, and the tone remains the same this time around, kicking off with The Afters’ Start Over fifty seconds into the video. It’s pretty awesome.

With these kinds of ensemble films, it’s a bit of a worry that with so many stars, each character will only get about five minutes of screen time for us to enjoy. But this new trailer certainly looks promising, with the different characters all having their own little story to look forward to. Robert De Niro’s little moment at the end of the trailer is just brilliant. Without further ado, here’s the great new trailer and the poster for the film beneath it. If you’d like to watch it in beautiful HD, then you can do so over here.

When Charlie Sheen was very publically fired earlier in the year, all eyes were on Two and a Half Men to see what would happen next. Could the show really go on without Charlie Sheen?

The answer, as the first episode of season nine demonstrates with confidence, is a resounding, ‘Damn right, it can!’ With Ashton Kutcher replacing Sheen’s presence in the form of newly-introduced character, Walden Schmidt, its future is already looking secure straight off the bat.

The opening to the ninth season of the show, entitled ‘Nice To Meet You, Walden Schmidt’, begins with Charlie’s funeral, after having fallen in front of a Metro train in Paris, making it a closed-casket service with no need to show us a body, and thus readily and immediately moving forwards following Sheen’s expulsion from the show. A group of ex-girlfriend mourners attending the service lament the parting gifts they’d received from Charlie from a number of trysts more than the death of the man himself, and only his brother Alan (Jon Cryer) seems to be genuinely sad to see him go.

I personally thought the first half of the show spent a little too much time attacking Charlie’s memory more than anything, and as such, some of the jokes fell a little flat in my mind. But its second half, when Ashton Kutcher’s Walden Schmidt comes in, was absolutely terrific. Schmidt’s entrance into the show was perfect, an excellently timed comedic introduction to his character with a nice set-piece to boot. Ordinarily, I’m not a huge fan of physical comedy, but this was a good one.

Schmidt and Alan find themselves in mutual sadness – Schmidt having been dumped by his girlfriend earlier that day – and so they head out to drown their sorrows at the nearby bar. It’s here where things start to fall into place, and we see how Schmidt’s going to be incorporated into the show in Charlie’s role. Alan had been on the brink of moving back in with his mother, unable to afford to live in Charlie’s house that is the staple of the show, and it naturally transpires that Schmidt has more money than Alan can talk about without stuttering with joy.

It’s a neat way of wrapping up the problem of introducing the third of the three male lead characters into the show fairly seamlessly, and the writers and creators have done well to make it happen with such a sense of ease. Alan and Walden’s chemistry is immediately as affable and enjoyable as watching Two and a Half Men with Sheen, and the show has clearly had no trouble at all in finding its feet after what could have been a fatal decision to fire Sheen this year.

Schmidt is already filling Charlie’s shoes nicely, with his charm easily coming across in this first episode, which has a number of entertaining pixelated moments of nudity in just the first twenty minutes of the season. If you have twenty minutes to spare, and you’ve ever been a fan of Two and a Half Men, I highly recommend that you take the time to meet Walden Schmidt yourself. You’re going to love him.

Almost 30 million people tuned in over in the States to watch the season premiere, the highest rating yet for the show, and it will be interesting to see the percentage that stick with it in the coming weeks as the season progresses.

The first episode is available to download now via iTunes, and each episode will be up the day after it airs in the States. Check back in to catch up on my review of the season, episode-by-episode. It should be a lot of fun.

Alan (Jon Cryer), a broke chiropractor, lives with his brother Charlie (Charlie Sheen), a hedonistic, narcissistic, wealthy, jingle composer. Alan’s son Jake (Angus T Jones) stays over at the weekends (he’s the half) and we flit between shenanigans involving Charlie’s boozing and whoring and Alan’s fairly pathetic attempts at, well, most stuff.

*****

It is difficult to review this, or anything else involving Charlie Sheen, without considering his relatively recent meltdown (or whatever one might call what happened to him earlier in the year). He blew his top at Chuck Lorre, the producer and creator of this show, he fussed about his salary (c. $2m per episode), he consumed a lot of drink, he admitted to what seems to be a fairly lively coke habit and he made much of his tiger blood and winning. He embarked on a tour, hung out with shapely women and got sacked from this show.

What is interesting is that although the real-life Charlie now seems to be a lot like the onscreen Charlie, the onscreen Charlie is a lot happier, a lot more care-free, a comic rather than tragic figure. But enough of the psycho-analysis, what’s the show like, given that this is Charlie’s last season? Well, I had not seen a single episode, or indeed second of Two And A Half Men before embarking on my viewing of the sixteen episodes of season 8. My first thought was, how on earth has this lasted so long? It seemed smutty, puerile, obvious and unimaginative. Even without having sat through the previous seven seasons, it seemed clear where each scenario was headed and I wondered why audiences had stuck with it.

But then something funny happened. It started to grow on me. Sure, it remained crude, vulgar and crass and of course in a show like this no-one really has a meaningful character arc of any description, but I did at least warm to the scenarios and crack the occasional smile at the hi-jinks they got into. Alan and Charlie are of course the classic comedy duo – the uptight dweeb and the anarchic, cool, funny guy – and although it is played very broadly and superficially, they are presented as essentially good, likeable characters. Jake remains a bit-player throughout the season, never really given any room to shine, which is a shame, but well-judged and very funny cameos from Jane Lynch, Ryan Stiles and Judd Nelson help break up the at times repetitive and derivative interplay between the leads.

The season opener is a pretty bland stand-alone, but after that a series of plots lines are introduced which play out over a number of episodes, which proves much more satisfying. Most enjoyable are the episodes that involve Alan’s developing relationship with Lyndsey, the mother of one of Jake’s class-mates. It is one of those situations that is not milked to death, but is allowed to become at times desperately painful and embarrassing, but also very funny and enjoyable. The season seems to end awfully abruptly with the collapse of Alan’s Ponzi scheme and the various loose ends of Charlie’s relationship with his stalker will have to be brushed aside for the new Ashton Kutcher-starring season 9 without so much as a “here’s what happened”. But that’s what happens when your star starts winning.

If you already know and love this show, I’m sure you’re already planning to pick this up. If you’ve never tried it, there are worse ways to spend an evening and if you can look past the crude tone and content, you might find much to laugh at. You can get hold of Two And A Half Men Season 8 right now at LoveFilm.

Warner Bros. didn’t (because they look at the bottom line) and here we have the sort-of sequel to their movie, Valentine’s Day in the form of New Year’s Eve. The cast list is sort of silly as it has a gazillion a-listers in it who will (I assume) only get around 2 minutes of screen-time each!

New Years Eve Stars (get ready and take a deep breath) Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyers, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino!

Garry Marshall comes back to direct and we can expect this little gem 9th December this year.

No matter the type of journey, rom-coms follow the same pattern: meet-cute, have fun together, disruption/problem occur, time passes, then they meet again, realise they love each other and get together again.

No Strings Attached tries to deviate from usual rom-com routine but unfortunately the final conclusion still remains the same. Natalie Portman plays Emma, an emotionally unavailable woman who doesn’t understand the need to be in a relationship when you can just have fun and be happy. Ashton Kutcher’s character, Adam, is the opposite, but desperate to be with Emma he agrees to a no strings attached/friends with benefits/fun buddies/sex buddies/f**k buddies relationship. However as time goes by they find themselves falling in love with each other and Adam must convince Emma that a relationship is worth the risk.

No Strings Attached opens strong by showing us the first time Emma and Adam meet as teenagers at a summer camp, and shortly after we cut to a scene five years later when they finally meet again. After a series of random meets they exchange numbers, and on an alcoholic fuelled night out Adam drunk dials Emma and wakes up in on her sofa naked, only modestly covered by a tea towel. Adam, having recently got out of a relationship, and Emma who recently started working at the hospital, decide that relationships complicate things so agree to just be friends with benefits.

The problem is that even if it wasn’t a rom-com with preview screenings over Valentine’s Day, everyone sat in the cinema already knows the outcome. It simply isn’t possible to have a lasting friends with benefits relationship. It can work for a short amount of time, ie between relationships or whenever they’re in town. Even if you go into the relationship with no romantic feelings for the other person as time goes by you either realise that kind of person they are and terminate the relationship, or start to develop feelings for them.

In its defence the first half of the film is very good; great dialogue and supporting cast, Natalie Portman is fantastic and beautiful as ever, and it provided more than a few laughs. When Adam does eventually convince Emma to go on a date with him he brings her handful of carrots instead of flowers and hands her a date itinerary complete with a google map.

The character of Adam’s dad I spent the entire film trying to decide if I liked or not. He started off in an ‘American Pie Dad’ way of trying to be cool, smoking weed, and embarrassing his son by still trying to be young and sexy which instantly annoyed me. However there were parts of his character that worked very well; dating Adam’s ex girlfriend and the wonderful Birthday song scene. Lake Bell and Jake M. Johnson were fantastic supporting cast deserve a lot more credit than they’ll probably get and were as enjoyable to watch as Portman and Kutcher.

Overall No Strings Attached is certainly better than most might expect, although if you take a date to this film on Valentine’s Day be weary of what message you want to send. But at the end of the day if it looks like a rom-com and sounds like a rom-com, it’s a rom-com.

***~~ (3/5)

By our records, that now means the cast includes Jon Bon Jovi, Seth Meyers, Til Schweiger, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer and Hilary Swank!

I have to admit, that’s really rather an impressive cast but let’s hope and pray it’s going to be better than Valentine’s Day!! I went along to the press conference for that and man, it was dull, just like the film!

More as we get it!

Jon Bon Jovi, Seth Meyers and Inglorious Basterds star Til Schweiger join Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer and Hilary Swank for the tale of a bunch of New Yorkers celebrating and commiserating their lives on (yep, you’re guessed it!) New Year’s Eve.

In a role that will no doubt involve much research and digging deep to find the character, Bon Jovi has been cast as a rock star who stumbles across an old lover (Berry) at a party. Meyer (a US comedian who currently serves as head writer for Saturday Night Live) will play a father who wants his wife (Biel) to deliver the first baby of the year in order to win a $25,000 reward. No doubt hilarious will ensue as he tries to conjure up different ways to get his wife into labour!

Wonder if Bon Jovi will supply a theme tune too? His brand of slushy soft rock would probably serve as the perfect complement with this film.

The movie is directed by Ivan Reitman and also stars Cary Elwes, Kevin Kline, Olivia Thirlby, Lake Bell and Ophelia Lovibond. This is one of two movies coming out this year in which two friends decide to get together with quite probably the same outcome. The other movie stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis and is called Friends with Benefits. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if both are as predicable as they look. Then again, this one is directed by Reitman so I’m holding out hope!

No Strings Attached is released in the US 21st January and in the UK 25th February.

New Year’s Eve (Hogmanay to those of us who knows how to party) is gathering speed over at New Line, with Sarah Jessica Parker joining the already impressive ensemble cast.

New Line, who are also in negotiations with Zac Efron and Halle Berry for roles in the planned follow up to this year’s Valentines Day, are clearly keen to repeat their recent success at the box office.

Parker will join Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Ashton Kutcher, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Lea Michele and Abigail Breslin as the latter’s mother. No stranger to New York, the Sex and the City star will interweave with the other characters as they each deal with parallel romances and dramas.

Should Efron and Berry also reach deals with the studio, they will round out the cast as a smitten bike messenger and a love-struck caterer respectively. Although it was previously reported that Taylor Swift would be the only member of cast returning for the quasi-sequel, the inclusion of Kutcher and Biel on the cast list suggests otherwise.

Not due to start filming until February, it is unlikely we’ve heard the last from Garry Marshall’s casting department.
