FilmNation Entertainment have released a first look still of Rachel McAdams and Ben Affleck in Terrence Malick’s upcoming romance drama.

The as-yet-untitled film stars McAdams, Affleck, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Baker, Amanda Peet and Barry Pepper.

No word on when it’ll be released, but it’s unlikely to hit until 2012 at the earliest.

If you can’t wait until 2012 for your next Malick fix, then fear not, the long-delayed The Tree of Life will be released in the Summer.

Check out the vague plot details and first look still for the upcoming romance drama below:

Set over a period of years, the film stars Affleck as Neil, a failed writer stuck in a loveless marriage with Marina (Kurylenko), whose expiring visa put pressure on Neil to propose. Neil and Marina have a daughter (Tatiana Chilin) together, but both of them are looking outside the marriage. Neil is drawn to Jane (McAdams) and Marina betrays her husband by having an affair with Charlie (Charles Baker).

Both Neil and Marina seek guidance from Father Quintana (Bardem), a priest frustrated by his inability to live his own life because he’s too busy advising his parishioners on theirs. The couple’s dysfunctional relationship begins to take a toll on their daughter, who starts having problems in school.

Neil is investigating a treatment plant that may be distributing contaminated water. He’s also still in love with a woman from his past and doesn’t have the courage to let her go, imagining her as a blindfolded ghost throughout the film.

After Marina dents her car and burns dinner, she and Neil have a fight and discuss splitting up. Marina feels like she and Neil are brother and sister and Neil admits that he feels burdened by her. After Neil storms out, his daughter begins talking in her sleep.

Charlie takes an interest in Marina and begins to seduce her by giving her a wind harp.

After cheating on Neil, she admits her affair to him, while Neil confesses to Father Quintana that he thought he could marry without love. The duo talk about marriage, miracles and despair, and Father Quintana advises him not to get divorced. The two of them debate the subject, prompting Neil to break down and later decide to clear his head by going fishing.

Neil and Jane share a kiss, which Jane doesn’t feel bad about because she knows Neil doesn’t love his wife. She plans to wait for Neil to get tired of Marina.

After Marina gets fired from her job, she runs into Father Quintana and the duo share several other chance encounters. She expresses the desire to do charity work and winds up volunteering at a soup kitchen.

Rachel Weisz plays Dinah, Neil’s friend who can’t bear to see Neil hurting himself.

Romina Mondello plays Anna, who is married but has a boyfriend. She and her husband have a fight and she breaks up with him. She urges Marina to do the same but Marina decides to take a trip to Europe.

When Marina returns, Dinah advises Jane to let Neil go now that his wife is back. Jane resigns to marry another suitor named Bradley, while Dinah is surprised to learn that her brother has now fallen in love with Marina, who at one point, learns she might need a hysterectomy.

Though Father Quintana constantly makes the time to listen to his parishioners’ problems, he is repaid by having his car broken into and his air conditioner stolen. He begins giving communion at bars, but it’s not long before he draws the ire of the local bishop and is sent to Kansas.

We spoke to one of the most luminescent stars in our sky at the moment, Emily Blunt on her role in Gulliver’s Travels and what it was like working with Jack Black and the array of British talent which included Catherine Tate, Billy Connolly, James Corden and Chris O’Dowd.

Updating the tales of Lemuel Gulliver to an age of iPhones, Guitar Hero and internet plagiarism is all well and good and as a frame on which to hang another virtuoso ‘Jack Black as Jack Black’ performance it should provide a broad enough base for an enjoyable, engaging comedy. It doesn’t.

Black plays a postal room worker in a publishing house who begins the film by being overlooked for a managerial position in favour of an employee on his first day and decides to change his life, and win the heart of Amanda Peet’s Travel Editor by applying for a travel writer’s position. One night of cribbing from the Time Out and Lonely Planet websites and he gets his first assignment – to investigate the Bermuda Triangle and so we are on our way.

A fancy visual effect later and Gulliver wakes to find himself on a mysterious island, tied down by an army of tiny people. From this point on two things happen: any meaningful connection to Jonathan Swift’s novel is lost and Jack Black leads an almost inexplicable collision of pantomime and pop culture with few redeeming features.

Arriving in Lilliput Black wins over the King and Queen (Billy Connolly and Catherine Tate) and their daughter (Emily Blunt) but immediately enrages the captain of the guard, and the Princess’s fiance, played by Chris O’Dowd. With Jason Segel appearing as a man imprisoned for falling in love with the Princess you can easily guess how this one plays out, but people have made great things with far less. How does Gulliver’s Travels fare?

What script there is exists to pepper a staggering level of platitudinous bilge into an idea of Swift’s tale without any kind of worth or weight to it; logic is stomped underfoot as the narrative lurches from one point to the next without warning. It’s an uneven journey we are on together and while the visual effects are diverting the script is woefully uninspired; both your face and your palm will be numb by the end of the film.

Any trace of satire is swept away in favour of a barrage of pop culture references (as opposed to jokes) and Gulliver’s Travels becomes a strange live action version of a Shrek film. The sharp blade of Swift’s wit is blunted repeatedly by an overriding crassness, it consoles itself with drenching Billy Connolly in a jet stream of urine and inserting trailer friendly moments with Jack Black using the Lilliputians as foosball players, or daubing them in Kiss makeup for a real life version of Guitar Hero – all of these ideas are fine, but never amount to anything other than a slap around the face for the audience members who may have dozed off while the film plays out.

Amanda Peet appears as Gulliver’s unattainable love interest and is typically charming, given that she’s asked to do very little here other than be the focus of Gulliver’s affections, play angry at the plagiarism element, then arrives in Lilliput (don’t ask) to need rescuing and finally watch as Gulliver believes in himself and overcomes an enormous evil robot. Like Blunt, Connolly and Tate she is given so little room to move and is criminally underused.

Enlisting some one of the finest British comic talent to accompany Mr. Black on his adventure should provide a decent comedic front to balance the wild yahooing of Black’s Gulliver and Blunt and O’Dowd do very well with the material, with O’Dowd in particular standing out from the crowd, adding a dash of Python to his Pantomime, but it is of little consequence as he is forced into a Wallace and Gromit-esque robot by journey’s end.

Emily Blunt’s character is drawn from the richest variety of pantomime with mood swings like a pendulum in a hurricane, her princess glides through the motions with a few good comedy moments and Jason Segel, playing her lovestruck admirer, was perhaps the only genuinely affecting performance in the whole shebang.

On the plus side Blenheim Palace looks very pretty.

I believe the intentions of Rob Letterman and the writers Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman were good, but this particular road to hell is a massively uneven one, with misstep after misstep and at the end all we have is an inexplicable song and dance number. There is no definitive adaptation of Swift’s classic novel and while a family-friendly comedy starring Jack Black was never going to delve into the satirical depths of the source material there’s no excuse for this comedy wasteland. The film aims low and fails to meet its potential at every turn. It could have been a lot of fun, but the good time the cast were having on set failed to make the journey back from Lilliput.

*½~~~ (1.5/5)

Gulliver’s Travels in out in the UK on Boxing Day.

Director Rob Letterman is the man behind Monsters Vs. Aliens and Shark Tale and he steps into live action to direct (or rather contain) Jack Black as he runs riot over Lilliput with Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, Catherine Tate, Billy Connolly, James Corden and Chris O’Dowd in support.

Billy Connolly is one of the most celebrated comedians alive today and his role as King of the Lilliputians alongside Catherine Tate, James Corden, Chris O’Dowd and Emily Blunt is his latest role in a nicely eclectic filmograpy which takes in The Last Samurai, a role in the recent X-Files film and the two Boondock Saints films.

We sat down with the man to talk about working on this classic tale. Check out our interviews with Emily Blunt tomorrow and director Rob Letterman on Wednesday and you can see our review of the film on the site this Thursday.

I saw the film last week and am wedged under a heavy embargo so cannot tell you any more about what I thought until late December but there will be the interview I did with the director up on the site around the same time so you can hear what he has to say for himself.

The new TV spot is full of exactly the Jack Blackisms that will sell the film and the supporting cast, which is considerable, are on show as well, with Billy Connolly and Emily Blunt among the little people.

Here’s the TV spot, noticed by the /Film guys,

And now we move onto the posters, which take Photoshop down to a whole new level – seriously, look at Jack Black’s head in the second one. Man…

The movie is directed by Rob Letterman and will be in 3D. Fox have also confirmed that the movie will be released on Boxing Day in the UK, 26th December.

Synopsis: Lemuel Gulliver is a mailroom clerk at a New York newspaper. After Gulliver bluffs his way into an assignment writing about the secrets of the Bermuda Triangle, he is hurtled to an undiscovered land, Lilliput. In this fantastical new world, Gulliver is a bigger-than-life figure — in size and ego — especially after he starts telling tall tales, taking credit for his world’s greatest inventions, and placing himself at the center of its most historic events. Gulliver’s position is enhanced even further when he leads his new friends in a daring battle against their longtime enemies. But when Gulliver loses it all and puts the Lilliputians in peril, he must find a way to undo the damage. Gulliver only becomes a true giant among men when he learns that it¿s how big you are on the inside that counts.

This new image comes from Jack Black’s new movie, Gulliver’s Travels which I cannot wait to see. It looks completely nuts and i’m hoping will prove a real hit! It also stars Amanda Peet, Catherine Tate, Emily Blunt, Billy Connolly, Jason Segel, Chris O’Dowd, T.J. Miller and is directed by Rob Letterman.

It’s scheduled for release in the UK 26th December and was filmed at Pinewood Studios.

Please Give will very likely be placed in competition with its UK box office companion, Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg, and may suffer the same reduction that film did – here we have a film concerning wealthy white people looking inwardly for validation, with not much actually happening.

It’s an unfair reduction, but one which writer/director Nicole Holofcener must be getting used to. And to my mind there’s nothing wrong with using this as a basis as long as you have a good story to tell and you create interesting characters to do so.

Please Give is a witty, intelligent bleak comedy which has those inevitabilities, death and taxes (or money), at its heart. Holofcener regular Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt are modern day, legitimised grave robbers, hired by surviving relatives to scour the apartments of their recently deceased family members in order to buy up furniture and items of value to sell on in their trendy store.

Guilt ridden and dependent on this line of work, Keener and Platt’s marriage and partnership is further affected by their ninety one year old neighbour (whose adjoining apartment they have already bought) and her two chalk and cheese granddaughters played by Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet. Their uneasy relationship develops as they couple and break away through love, lust and momentary bonding through soul searching dialogues before walking away.

There are moments of broad, trailer-friendly comedy but for the most part this ensemble character study takes in themes of fear and self-loathing in New York, class guilt and the notion of value, both financial and human, and sprinkles epiphanies along the way and Holofcener wisely allows her characters to find those moments – or walk by without noticing them, and this is part of the film’s success.

The cast is uniformly excellent, each adding their own twist to their character, allowing a third dimension to come out. The script ebbs and flows with a rich, caustic wit, every moment helped by Holofcener’s camera which does great work in keeping a voyeuristic distance and maintaining the rhythms of conversation despite some hectic editing.

Rebecca Hall stands out in this female lead comedy, as far from the Sex and the City foursome as can be. The stark, often unattractive look at relationships and life doesn’t dole out answers as you exit the cinema, and the moments of quiet reflection within the crackling tension of the strained couplings are where the film pays off.

Please Give is out in the UK now.

You can see it in HD over at Apple or watch it embedded below.

Starring Jack Black, directed by Rob Letterman and written by Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller, it ‘s obvious from the trailer that this is predominantly a comedy and judging by the trailer this is going to rest heavily on Jack Black.

Black is very popular but also something of an acquired taste so I wonder if this is going to have the huge appeal that Fox are perhaps hoping for. Unsurprisingly, Jack Black will be coming at you in 3D in this 21st century take on Gulliver’s Travels.

Synopsis: In a contemporary re–imagining of the classic tale, Jack Black stars as Gulliver, a big–talking mailroom clerk who, after he’s mistakenly assigned a travel piece on the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of very tiny people. At first enslaved by the diminutive and industrious Liliputians, and later declared their hero, Gulliver comes to learn that it’s how big you are on the inside that counts.

Let us know what you think of the trailer and this new attempt to update this 18th century novel.

The movie has been shot at Pinewood Studios and stars Jack Black as Gulliver. It’s directed by Rob Letterman, written by Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller and is based on the book by Jonathan Swift which was written way back in 1726!

The movie has a great cast which, as well as Jack Black stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Billy Connelly and Amanda Peet. It’s schedled for release at the end of this year so we can expect to see a lot more from the movie in the coming months.

This new poster has been debuted by IMPA.

Her latest film reunites her with FwM star Catherine Keener and gathers a pretty great supporting cast of Oliver Platt, Amanda Peet and the effervescent Rebecca Hall and tells the story of a successful New York couple crippled by liberal guilt and a less conscientious teenage daughter.

The trailer, embedded below, offers up a lot of choice cuts from this film, and the cast is what will draw you in. Any New York character based comedy which has been labeled acerbic will draw comparisons with Woody Allen, and when this film is out in the UK on the 18th June so you can judge for yourselves.

Roland Emmerich has made his name with various apocalypses, be it aliens in Independence Day, Godzilla stomping its way through Manhattan, death by frostbite in The Day After Tomorrow and now 2012 tops them all.

We all die, and in the middle of the end of the world he finds time to shoehorn in the estranged families and heroic canine rescue tropes we know and endure. With 2012 he has achieved his goal; he has become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

Technology plays a huge part on the effectiveness of his catastrophes, with the model work of Independence Day giving way to the obliteration of the White House in 2012 by the JFK aircraft carrier – just one of the moderately sized set pieces which his CGI team throw our way. On Blu-ray it looks incredible, and the enhanced resolution allows the busy annihilation of the cities to be rendered in great detail.

I was able to watch as the helpless and hapless meet their maker in a cornucopia of carnage, with tiny buildings crumbling and miniature explosions populating the epic destruction. If you are going to see this one, and you have the hardware, then Blu-ray is the way to go.

Most film benefit from HD, 2012 practically necessitates it. The only reason to see this film is to watch the world ending in glorious Doom-o-vision and the scale of the devastation means that much of the detail is lost, particularly on a smaller screen. There is nothing in the characters which will engage; dialogue and narrative in Emmerich’s films often play second fiddle to the visuals and bombast but here the collection of plucky souls and stereotypes lack any engagement at all, and so we are left with a beautiful, hollow spectacle.

The Blu-ray extras are outstanding. If you want to see Roland Emmerich talk his way through the film, complete with storyboards and pre-vis pop outs, then you’re in luck with a Picture in Picture mode which is an enjoyable, if slightly geeky, way to watch the film.

As with most of Sony’s releases the Blu-ray incorporates the BD-Live service with MovieIQ functionality, meaning you can get all the info on the cast and crew as well as learning exactly when and where the world will end (I made that bit up).

2012 is a very long and silly film, but it has been polished up very nicely and looks great in HD, although this polish won’t help you enjoy the ridiculous nature characters and the cinematic lethargy which plagues the film, but if your idea of a good time is to watch billions suffer and die in the company of John Cusack then this, truly, is the film for you.

Here’s a HD trailer to get you in the mood.

2012 comes to Blu-ray and DVD on the 29th of March and here are the extras you can expect on the Blu-ray.

Picture-In-Picture: Roland’s Vision-Includes Pre-Visualization, storyboards and behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with filmmakers, cast and crew

Disaster struck at the box office this weekend, again and again.

Roland Emmerich’s CG-heavy apocalypse movie 2012 starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet had a huge opening weekend in the US and abroad, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Balancing its $200 million budget with its US earnings of $65 million and the foreign box office of $160 million will please Sony who claim that 2012 opened top of each of the markets it played.

While not entirely surprising this success can only lead to other, similar successes and we can expect all manner of digital disasters coming our way, and this certainly will be good news for those looking forward to 2013, the proposed TV sequel and also the expected Independence Day sequels Emmerich recently discussed.

According to the Reporter Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said, “I felt the Earth move…Audiences responded to the amazing images they were seeing throughout the film’s campaign. This movie really did raise the bar, even for Roland Emmerich.”

2012 is one of those strange movies where you feel like you shouldn’t like it but cant help yourself enjoying and even sometimes laughing at the world’s destruction, either because of it’s slightly cheesy and humorous script or because the effects are so darn good that it just looks fantastic.

If you’ve not been following the story on HeyUGuys previously, 2012 is a story, in a nutshell, about the end of the world. I’m going to try and write this review with zero spoilers but I’ll warn you before I say anything close to one.

In the movie, there are two sets of main characters, the first is led by Oliver Platt and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the government scientists who spot that disaster is going to occur in 2009. The other group are a family led by John Cusack who is struggling to come to terms with the divorce from his wife, Kate (played by Amanda Peet) mainly because it puts a strain on the relationship with his kids (played by Liam James and Morgan Lily). Kate has a new partner who, in Cusack’s eyes, seems to be driving a wedge further between himself and his kids. That said, together, their mission throughout the movie is basically to stay alive. We have previously posted a 5 minute teaser clip which you can watch here showing part of this fight for survival but I can tell you now that what you see in this clip has been heavily edited and there is much more to come!

Danny Glover and Thandie Newton complete the main lineup as the President and First Daughter with Glover’s character trying to make the best decisions he can in the three years in which he has to ‘save humanity’.

2012 is directed by Roland Emmerich who has previously brought us Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow so it’ll be no surprise when I tell you that this movie is CGI heavy…. and when I say heavy, I mean heavy. No, there is nothing wrong with the earth’s gravitational pull, but when you have a budget of (estimated) $200m what are you gonna do with it? That’s right people, spend it!! Emmerich enlisted the help of the people at Digital Domain and Scanline VFX to create all the effects and my word did they do a good job! Filming something like that must be a challenge it itself but the attention to detail that these guys went to was exceptional. It’s hard to grasp what I mean until you see it but imagine The Day After Tomorrow on enhancing drugs and you might get close! When you see the world exploding with literally thousands of effects happening at once, this detail really shines through. Where you might find Micheal Bay doing a scene in transformers, he too will get ILM or Digital Domain (the later, he owns) to work out every tiny detail but Emmerich does this on a giant scale. He was after all basically destroying planet earth and a lot has to be thought about when you’re doing that!!

Woody Harrelson makes a cameo appearance as ‘the nutter’ predicting the end of the world but as we all do when we see the nutter on the bus, we’ll politely ignore them (in England anyway). Cusack and Harrelson only have 2 or 3 scenes together but bounce off one another really well and all their work together is hilarious. In fact that’s one thing that Emmerich’s screenwriter (Harald Kloser) seems to do well also, make light of the situation to make even the end of the world humorous in parts. I mean, take a look at the 5 minute clip we’ve got and you have Cusack ringing his ex-wife telling her not to listen to the Governator as he’s talking rubbish.

I could write about this movie for hours as there was so much in it. It’s quite a heavyweight coming in at 2hrs 40 mins but I was loving it and truth be told, I didnt want it to end. Cusack, Ejiofor and Platt all lead well from the front and their supporting cast are pretty good too. Often the side-kick kids get on my nerves in movies like this but they were in it enough so that you remember them but you can easily ignore them should you choose!

If you’re looking for an all out roller coaster ride from start to finish then this is it. Action, effect, effects, effects and then some more action with some laughs thrown in there too makes 2012 and I’ll definitely be getting it on blu ray when it comes out next year!

2012 is released 13th November and you can enter our 2012 poster competition here.
