The film, directed Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure, Instinct), and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (National Treasure, Pirates Of The Caribbean), tells the story of a master sorcerer, Balthazar, (Cage) trying to defend New York City against his nemesis, Maxim (Molina). Balthazar recruits Dave (Baruchel) as his protege in an effort to stop the dark forces.

The trailer introduces audiences to each of the main characters whilst offering an insight into the film’s main narrative structure. Displaying a host of acting talent from Nicholas Cage to up-and-coming actor Jay Baruchel, Disney are hoping this will create a little more hype surrounding the films fast approaching release. The film hits UK screens in exactly a month’s time.

The mystical masters behind the blockbuster “National Treasure” franchise, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, are celebrating their latest big screen incarnation, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” with a special music event in the heart of Manhattan. Since this epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice was filmed entirely on location in New York City, it is a “super” natural fit to honor the film’s impending July 14 release (August 11th in the UK) by throwing a party in iconic Bryant Park featuring performances by OneRepublic and Alpha Rev, plus appearances from the movie’s stars and filmmakers, including Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Toby Kebbell, Teresa Palmer, director Jon Turteltaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The event, emceed by Z100’s JJ, is free to the public. Bryant Park lawn is open to the general public starting at 7:00 p.m. EST and the streaming goes live at 8:15 p.m. EST.

Disney’s marketing push continues for the live action fantasia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and there’s a new poster and some new clips making the rounds today.

The sight of Jay Baruchel looking wide eyed and Nicolas Cage solemn under a wide rimmed hat is fun, and director Jon Turtletaub has clearly become used to the CG enhanced action that has become the selling point for his film.

We’ve been assaulted on sides by marketing for this film, and with a newly invigorated Nicolas Cage under a pointy hat I’m looking forward to how this one elevates itself from the rather ordinary synopsis, which I’ve included below,

Dave (Jay Baruchel) is just an average college student, or so it appears, until the sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) recruits him as his reluctant protégé and gives him a crash course in the art and science of magic. As he prepares for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern-day Manhattan, Dave finds it is going to take all of the courage he can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.

While I enjoyed the teaser trailer for Gore Verbinski’s, and liked the look of the peripheral characters, and was captivated for literally seconds by the first poster for Rango, which showed off our main character this is what I’ve been waiting for.

The first proper trailer for Verbinski’s animated chameleon film appeared over the internets today and it’s a good one, not giving too much away but showing off the slapstick as well as the surreal (that fish makes an appearance – just as odd as the first time we saw it).

If you’ve seen the teaser trailer you’ll know…not a lot, but it’s an intriguing premise (more details, though not too many more, at the links above), but you’ve never seen Johnny Depp quite like this.

The rest of the cast impresses immediately, as Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant make up a pretty formidable array of talent and with this poster of Rango himself (voiced by Johnny Depp) the character design of Verbinski’s animation gets its first airing – and is it just me or is there something here that suggests Fear and Loathing?

We’ve seen much from this one in the form of trailers, teasers, posters and the like, and now there’s three more clips hoping to cast their spell on you. The CG infusion of the age old story seems to be doing well and Cage is coming off of two acclaimed performances in Kick-Ass and Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant so there’s a fair amount of momentum for this one.

In this soon to be post-Potter world, and once Twilight has faded into darkness the studios will need a franchise friendly property to rely on and as this one will be going up against the likes of Percy Jackson and The Dead Horse (not a real film, but you get the idea). The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has a pretty good cast and if they don’t get drowned in CG we should be pleasantly surprised once this one hits the big screen.

The original teaser video that pointed fans in the direction of the official Rango site is here, but in all honesty it doesn’t offer a great deal beyond a very brief teasing look at the animation skills on show.

Verbinski has to rate as one of the most eclectic directors currently working. Having started in adverts (he was responsible for the Bud frogs), he made his debut with surprise hit Mouse Hunt, following it with The Mexican, The Time Machine (he was at least partly responsible for its direction) before moving up to the big big time with the first Pirates of the Caribbean. The genre-hopper seems happiest when he is sticking to his eclectic manifesto, and hopefully he can channel some of the success of the Pirates franchise into this wonderful looking animation project. I still think it’s a huge shame that he won’t be taking  the directorial helm for the developmentally challenged BioShock movie.

What  I have learned today: poking a grumpy toad while he sleeps is an irresistible, and hugely time-consuming activity. Oddly rewarding too.

Rango is set to hit screens in the US on the 18th of March 2011, and not long after in Britain.

A brand new clip / featurette has been released for the new Disney / Bruckheimer movie which stars Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Teresa Palmer, Alfred Molina and Monica Bellucci which gives us a lovely look at the new broom scene and is introduced by Turteltaub himself.

With a cast as interesting as this one you have to be a little impressed that Verbinski isn’t mentioning that the film benefits from the vocal talents of Johnny Depp, or Bil Nighy, or Alfred Molina, Harry Sean Stanton, Ray Winstone, Abigail Breslin, and so on…

Being touted as ‘the story of a chameleon with an identity crisis’ there’s not much else to go on, but I found this image floating around the internet, possibly an early teaser poster but it could as easily be a fan’s mock up, but I’ll post it for context.

The official website is also open for business, even though the, admittedly pretty, artwork is a placeholder for something to arrive soon.

If you’re a fan of CG heavy movies about magic then you’ll probably love this one, and it comes to you from the hands of Dave’s fave – Jerry Bruckheimer – which tells you all you need to know.

There’s some new footage on offer here, and it looks slick enough, with magic abounding all over the place and Mr. Cage has on his spooky hat so you can’t argue.

The movie stars Nicholas Cage, Jay Baruchel and Alfred Molina and is based around part of the animated classic, Fantasia. The movie sees Nicolas Cage reunite with his National Treasure director, Jon Turteltaub and from what we’ve seen of the movie so far, we’re in for a treat.

This new featurette is called Good vs Evil and pretty much does what it says on the tin.
