Star-Wars-LogoReleased back in February last year, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D took a tidy sum of 0m. around the world, but it seems that the now Disney-owned Lucasfilm will be taking the 3D re-releases of the original films off their upcoming slate.

As you’ll no doubt remember, the reviews for last year’s re-release of Episode I weren’t especially brilliant, and a lot of people thought that it was just another money-making move from the studio, given that their original creative output was fairly lacking in the feature film department.

But with Disney at the fore, all that has now changed, with Deadline reporting that there won’t be any more 3D releases of the original series, with the focus shifting to the coming new trilogy.

Just last week, we heard the rather awesome news that J.J. Abrams will be taking the helm for Star Wars Episode VII, which is currently expected to arrive in theatres in 2015. With Abrams now officially on board, it’s possible that we could see that release date pushed back slightly. But it would no doubt be worth it to see Abrams take the helm here.

Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) has been tasked to pen the script, with specifics surrounding the plot remaining fairly tightly under wraps.

Given that Disney could have quite likely made another $200m. from re-releasing Episodes II and III in 3D over the next year, it’s nice to know that they’re taking on board the fans’ opinions, and shifting the focus to where it ought to be.

Star Wars Episode VII is currently expected to hit theatres in 2015, making that year one of the biggest for blockbusters in recent memory, if all goes to plan with The Avengers 2, the Justice League movie, and Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
