Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-IMAX-PosterJ.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness is just over a week away from hitting the big screen here in the UK, following shortly after in the US in mid-May, and the anticipation surrounding the blockbuster sequel is understandably on high.

Paramount have been doing a brilliant job of promoting Abrams’ sequel, which remains relatively shrouded in mystery – the key element of secrecy of course being the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s antagonist.

With the countdown on for the film’s release, on both sides of the Atlantic, the studio have debuted a new character profile of Simon Pegg’s Scotty. And to go alongside it, IMAX have released a rather awesome new poster for the film, designed by Mark Englert, introducing IMAX FANFIX™, which they describe as an evolution of their 12:01 program.

As before, the poster will be given out for free to those cinemagoers seeing the film at its earliest possible screening – the IMAX release for this film will bow two days prior to its wide release in the US, rather than at midnight on the day of release.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The cast for the sequel is another stellar ensemble, led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, and Noel Clarke.

Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 9th May here in the UK, with its US release date set for the following week on May 17th. As noted, IMAX cinemagoers in the US will get a chance to see the film two days prior to its wide release on May 15th, and those attending the first screening at 8pm will be given this rather awesome free IMAX poster at participating locations.
