Safety Not Guaranteed is by far one of the best films I’ve seen this year, coming to the UK back in April for Sundance London. The film marked the feature debuts of both its director, Colin Trevorrow, and its writer, Derek Connolly, and now the duo will be re-teaming once more for their next project, The Ambassador.
Deadline report that both Trevorrow and Connolly will pen the script, with Trevorrow behind the camera again, and Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf will be producing having worked with the duo on Safety Not Guaranteed.
“The film is set in the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, which not only monitors the universe for signs of life but is prepared to represent humanity if and when aliens arrive on earth. A shy, low-ranking staffer unwittingly makes first contact when he meets a mysterious beautiful woman and must risk more than his job when they are threatened by forces of this world and beyond.”
Sound good to you?
Because it sounds awesome to me.
“Colin and Derek are wonderful filmmakers who are able to take a big idea and find the emotion and humanity in it by humorously centering on complex characters confronting universal issues,” the Big Beach partners said in a statement. “We are very excited to make another movie with them.” Trevorrow and Connolly said the film “is about a pair of emotionally dysfunctional people forced into a situation beyond their control. This is exactly how we feel while shooting a film, which makes the support of trusted collaborators like Big Beach an absolute necessity.”
Safety Not Guaranteed debuted in the US on 8th June in 4 cities taking an impressive $100,000, and has been widening its opening in theatres across the country last weekend and this coming weekend – you can click here to find a cinema near you.
Still no word on if/when we can expect it in the UK, and we may unfortunately have to wait for a DVD/Blu-ray release later this year. But trust me, it will be worth the wait. I’ve been dying to see it again since Sundance London in April. In case you missed it, I’ve put the trailer below to give you a look at the magic the pair created on their first feature together.
