After the immensity that is Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling’s reunion for Only God Forgives was always going to be surrounded with anticipation.
Craig caught the three-minute footage preview at Cannes and described it in his report as ‘stylised to the extreme’, which sounds perfect to me.
After the first official image surfaced a few months back, followed by a batch of set photos (in which Gasper Noé intriguingly appeared) a few weeks later, we’ve now got four new black and white photos from the set of Gosling looking badly beaten and in the same suit as the last few we saw.
“Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.
When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.
Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.
Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.”
Written and directed by Winding Refn, the film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Yayaying, and Vithaya Pansringarm.
Winding Refn himself said back in March that they are “pushing hard toward our goal: be ready for last week of August,” which hints at the possibility that he’s aiming for a world premiere at Venice or Toronto, which would definitely be something to look forward to if you’re attending either.
No word yet on when we can expect it to get a wide release, but most likely either very late this year or early next – let’s hope it’s the former, because this can’t come fast enough. As usual with these new images below, you can click to enlarge.
