Philip Seymour Hoffman goodbyeThe headline says it all. One of the most brilliant actors of his generation has died and words are ineffectual at conveying the tragedy which is unfolding; the loss is immense.

Twitter, the place where most of us read the news, is now a stream of 140-character eulogies, personal recollections, and an attempt to quantify the void which has been left. He was an actor with incredible range, who always found his character’s voice and used it perfectly. His work with Paul Thomas Anderson is a fine example of the variety of roles he chose yet the depth of feeling, of understanding, in these varied roles is testament to his talent.

This actor was part of the reason that modern American cinema exists as it does today. His prolific acting career is a blessing amongst this bleakness as there are many chances to enjoy his work, and to discover more facets to the man.

When someone in the public’s gaze dies there is a comfort in the collective tributes paid, and the sadness abates in a direct proportion to the celebration of the good done by that person. This is how it should be. The man made many films and he was always worth watching. Seek out your favourites, find new ones. Celebrate the man’s life.

Rest in Peace Philip Seymour Hoffman.
