With The Twilight Saga coming to an end this year, all eyes will be turning to the next adaptation from Stephenie Meyer’s work, with Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, In Time) taking on her 2008 novel, The Host.
Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) stars as the young lead, and after new footage debuted to those attending Comic-Con this weekend, AMC Theatres have put up a new image from the film of Ronan and co-star Max Irons (Red Riding Hood).
“Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading ‘soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves – Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.”
Jake Abel (Percy Jackson) completes the young leading trio, with Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), William Hurt (A History of Violence), and Chandler Canterbury (Repo Men) supporting them.
Niccol is directing from his own script, and is coming off the back of the brilliant In Time, led by Justin Timberlake and Andrew Seyfried.
Meyer has said in recent years that she’s considered turning the novel into a trilogy, so this could well turn into another film franchise in the years to come.
The Host will be released on 29th March, 2013 in the UK and US, and you can bet that we’ll be seeing a pretty extensive campaign coming in the months to come, no doubt with a full-length trailer coming soon to follow the shorter first trailer we saw earlier this year. For now, the new image for your viewing pleasure. As usual, you can click to enlarge.
