Zachary-Quinto-Benedict-Cumberbatch-and-Chris-Pine-in-Star-Trek-Into-DarknessStar Trek Into Darkness sees J.J. Abrams make his long-awaited return to the big screen, with an equally anticipated sequel.

His original reboot was a big success back in 2009, and the sequel is set to be that much bigger when it lands next year.

Last week brought with it a very impressive first announcement trailer and teaser poster, with the trailer itself expected to hit next week. And now a new image of three of the film’s leading stars has surfaced online.

“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew”

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, and Noel Clarke lead a rather awesome cast, with the new image below giving us a look at Pine, Quinto, and Cumberbatch.

Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus), which sounds like it should make for a brilliant script.

Star Trek Into Darkness will be arriving in regular and IMAX theatres in the UK and US on 17th May, 2013. Nine minutes of the film will also be attached to IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in the US from Friday, with the trailer attached to regular screenings, and we’re expecting that trailer to land online a week today. For now, here’s the great new image, which you can click through to enlarge.
