Following yesterday’s debut of the lovely first trailer and poster for Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley in the eponymous lead, Focus Features have released a new image of Knightley opposite Aaron Johnson, playing the role of Count Vronsky, her lover.

The film marks Knightley’s third collaboration with director Joe Wright, who directed her to an Oscar nomination in 2005’s Pride & Prejudice.

The supporting cast alongside Knightley and Johnson is very impressive, with some of the finest talents this side of the Atlantic, headed up by Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, Domhnall Gleeson, Holliday Grainger, and Olivia Williams.

“The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with director Joe Wright, following the award-winning box office successes “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement,” is the epic love story “Anna Karenina,” adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (“Shakespeare in Love”). The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.”

The Oscar-winning Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) has penned the script, adapting Leo Tolstoy’s classic 19th century novel.

Anna Karenina will be released on 7th September here in the UK, before getting its release in the US on 9th November, a date which perhaps suggests an awards campaign will be forthcoming for the film. Best Costume Design would certainly not be out of the question, and perhaps more beyond that, given the talent involved – there aren’t many films with leading ladies this year, so Best Actress for Knightley could definitely be a possibility, too.
