Disneys-PlanesInspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars, which is of course a favourite for many fans of the animation house, we can look forward to seeing a semi-spin-off this summer in Disney’s Planes.

The animated blockbuster was originally to be released straight to DVD/Blu-ray, but the studio must have really loved the finished product, because they’ve opted to give it a full theatrical release around the world this summer instead.

We saw a teaser trailer earlier in the year, and now Disney have released a full-length trailer, along with a handful of images.

From above the world of Cars comes Disney’s Planes an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Dane Cook leads an absolutely terrific voice cast, alongside Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Cedric the Entertainer.

Klay Hall (King of the Hill) is behind the camera on this one, with John Lasseter himself serving as executive producer.

Despite Pixar not having a hand in the film’s development, I’m naturally encouraged by the fact that Lasseter is an exec producer, and the footage we’ve seen so far looks like it’s sure to be a family-favourite in just a few months’ time.

Planes will be released in 3D on August 9th in the US, with its UK release date following a week later on 16th August. Here’s the new trailer and a handful of images to get you in the mood.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
