Gangster-Squad-BannerRuben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad is by far one of our most anticipated films of next year.

Originally set for release back in September, surrounded with Oscar buzz, Warner Bros. decided to push the film back in the wake of the summer shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in order to re-film a scene that they felt too closely echoed reality.

Its January release is now very much on the horizon, and we’ve been treated to two excellent exclusives this month, with a great new image and an awesome new trailer. And with less than two weeks before it hits the big screen, the studio have released a new featurette to raise the anticipation that much more.

“Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.”

Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn lead one of the finest casts of 2013, with support coming from Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Nick Nolte, and Robert Patrick.

Fleischer (Zombieland) is sure to make waves with his first foray beyond comedy, and is directing from a script penned by Will Beall (Castle, the upcoming Justice League movie), based on an original seven-part article by Paul Lieberman in the LA Times.

Gangster Squad will be arriving in theatres on 11th January, 2013, and we can’t wait for that date to come. This is going to be awesome. For now, here’s the latest featurette to set the tone. Enjoy.
