Mouth Off Episode 26 The Karate Kid and Fantasia Festival

StumbleUponRedditPinterestShare

The only thing to kick the Monday morning blues right in the face is here, the latest episode of the Mouth Off podcast hits the internet.

Up for discussion this week is the Harald Zwart’s remake of the classic (?) 80s film The Karate Kid, this time starring Jaden Smith and the Jackie Chan. Bleeding Cool’s Movie Man Brendon Connelly, Craig Skinner and I take off the rose tints and stare deeply into the abyss of the latest remake to hit our screens.

Craig returns triumphant from Montreal to bring us all the news from Fantasia Fest and we also look ahead to FrightFest, so plenty to pleasure you aurally this week, as well as our resident Ripped from the Crypt section which this week takes as a theme films which mix animation with live action.

Click here to subscribe or listen to the Mouth Off feed in iTunes, where you can also find our older episodes, and if you’re feeling generous please leave us a review.

I hope you enjoy it, do let us know what you want to hear, or if you agree or disagree with us – leave your comments here, or email us on MouthOff@heyuguys.co.uk

Ripped from the Crypt time…

Brendon’s choice was The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb,

Craig chose Jan Svankmajer’s Alice, and as there wasn’t a trailer I’ve included a scene from the film.

I broke the rules a touch and chose two. First up is the Chuck Jones adaptation of Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth – here’s a scene.

And I couldn’t let this theme pass without Lionel Jefferies’ dark version of The Water Babies,

the phantom toll booth is one of my favorite all time live action films from my childhood…it easily rates in the top 5 on my list. EXCELLENT choice Jon! and Brendon, you are VERY wrong about this one, i know several people who love this film and find it extremely entertaining and mathmagical ; )

i'm going to have to put the water babies in my netflixed saved list…i'm not sure i've seen it, along with jan svankmajer’s alice, it has some interesting reviews on imbd.

and one of my other top favorite live action films is the incredible mr. limpit with don knotts and jack weston, (i'm a sucker for the classics)…which of course is being remade with johnny depp…hmmm not sure how i feel about that…

and side note…not that it matters, but jaden smith is from will smith's son from his first marriage

thanks as again for yet another fabulous review and looking forward to the next one!

So glad you enjoyed the podcast – and that you're a Tollbooth fan. I think part of the problem the film isn't more widely known over here is that I don't think it's available on DVD – I had to get a VHS copy imported to see it!

I'll have to look into your Incredible Mr. Limpit suggestion, sounds like a lot of fun.

    Thanks for commenting.

if you're willing you can get it on amazon.com (the U.S. amazon, possibly amazon.co.us maybe?), it must be out of print because a used copy is over $20. gonna have to get my copy soon!
