Led by Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, Juan Diego Solanas’ Upside Down has long been one of our most anticipated films of the year. Things were looking brilliant for the film at the start of the year, with one of the most promising trailers I’ve seen in a long time landing back in January, but all has been fairly quiet since then.

There was talk of a US December release earlier in the month, but now Variety are reporting that Millennium Entertainment have officially acquired the US distribution rights for the film, and are planning a 2D and 3D release in 2013.

Unfortunately, that means we’ll have a little longer to wait than we were hoping, but it’s definitely good news that the film has been officially, 100% picked up, and the 3D release would certainly suggest that Millennium are planning to give the film a very wide release next year, which can only be good news.

“Upside Down tells the story of two star crossed lovers Adam (Sturgess) and Eve (Dunst) separated by opposite worlds, one up and one down, but both just out of reach of the other. ”

Co-written by Solanas and Santiago Amigorena (A Few Days in September), the film sees the director making his English language debut behind the camera.

The film has already been released in Russia, where it went straight to number two at the box office, and we’re hoping that we’ll also be seeing the film in the New Year here alongside the US.

Upside Down is now set for release in 2D and 3D next year. No word on exactly when we can expect to see it arrive on the big screen, but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later, because this looks absolutely amazing. For now, here’s the brilliant trailer in its international form. I can’t wait. I have a feeling this will be one of my favourite films of 2013.
