Martin Scorsese Documents the Life of Famed Director Elia Kazan

StumbleUponReddit

Martin Scorsese has taken a break from producing documentaries on his favourite musical heroes and has turned his attention to one of his cinematic inspirations, director Elia Kazan.

Kazan (the filmmaker behind such reputable classics as On The Waterfront and East of Eden), had an equally dramatic life off-camera. In 1952, he testified against several peers in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities and revealed them to be Communists. The move cost Kazan many friends within the film industry.

Previous to this, he founded The Actor’s Studio in 1947 – a non-profit workshop which became famous for promoting the “Method” style of acting which is still practised by many performers today.

Scorsese documentary is included within an 18-disc box set celebrating the films of the director (who passed away, aged 94, in 2003).
