Killer Joe will open the 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival, artistic director Chris Fujiwara has announced.
The noir thriller, directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist), centers on a young man whose life spirals out of control when he hires an unexpectedly charming hit man to kill his own mother for her life insurance policy.
In the announcement, Fujiwara said, “We’re delighted to be opening this year’s festival with Killer Joe. William Friedkin’s exhilarating, intense, and brilliantly crafted film is absolutely in keeping with my ambition for the festival.”
The U.K. premiere will take place on Wednesday, June 20 at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. Friedkin and numerous cast members are expected to be in attendance.
Killer Joe stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon. It will be distributed in the U.K. by Entertainment One, with a full U.K. release scheduled for June 29.
The 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival runs from June 20 – July 1, 2012. As previously announced, Brave will bring the festival to a magical close on June 30.
