Casting news has abounded of late, with the current state of play seeming to be that Henry Cavill is Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman, Michael Shannon is Zod, Amy Adams will be Lois Lane, Antje Traue will play Zod’s accomplice Faora, Kevin Costner is due to be Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane should be Martha Kent and Russell Crowe is in line to be Jor-El. Frankly, that’s a pretty hefty cast already, but as they often say, the hits just keep on coming….
THR are saying that Julia Ormond (Legends of the Fall, Sabrina) has been offered (and is likely to accept) the part of Lara, Kal-El’s Kryptonian mother and Deadline say that Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU, Twelve Monkeys, Runaway Bride) “is in negotiations forĀ a major role”. Vulture spoke with Meloni and shot down a few rumours, Lex Luthor by name and Perry White by insinuation, saying that he would be playing a General in the film, and that he will shoot over five months in Vancouver and Chicago so it can be assumed that his role is not minor.
Certainly if anything goes wrong with the final product on this one, it’ll be hard to say that a better cast would have helped. I think that would tend to put more pressure on Zack Snyder to deliver on the promise of Dawn of the Dead, 300 and (to a lesser extent) Watchmen and show that Sucker Punch and that weird film with the owls were glitches rather than indicators of a downward trend.
