Legendary’s upcoming Godzilla reboot took Comic-Con’s Hall H by storm over the summer, when Warner Bros. teased a surprise short test reel, and put out a rather awesome first teaser poster.

After making one of the most memorable feature debuts in recent memory with Monsters*, Gareth Edwards signed on to direct the blockbuster epic last year, and now Variety report that the rising screenwriter Drew Pearce has been hired to give the script a four-week polish.

Their sources note that the polish isn’t being done because the studio are concerned about the script, but simply because they want to age up the characters to better fit the prototype of the actors they’re looking to target.

So this should be taken as good news: For tentpole audiences tired of increasingly younger casts, it sounds like Pearce is going to be bringing a little maturity to the characters.

Previous drafts of the script have been penned by Dave Callaham (Doom), Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son), and the brilliant David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy).

Pearce is making his feature debut as a screenwriter with Iron Man 3, well underway in filming – with the first teaser trailer announced as landing on 23rd October – and was hired a while back to pen the script for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3, and with Legendary now setting him to polish off their script for one of the biggest blockbusters of 2014, Pearce’s career is certainly on a rising curve.

Godzilla is set to hit the big screen on 16th May, 2014, if all goes well in the coming months. With Pearce hired for a four-week polish, here’s to hoping that we’ll have some casting news to bring you before the year’s end. This is definitely one to keep an eye on, and I can’t wait to see the kind of cast they’re looking to attract. More as we get it.

*If you haven’t yet seen Edwards’ debut, Monsters, I can’t recommend enough how much you should go out and buy it, watch it, and then discover all you can about how he made the film. The film itself is mind-blowing, and the story behind it is equally impressive.
