Hugh-Jackman-X-Men-First-ClassX-Men: Days of Future Past is shaping up to be an awesome and very promising sequel coming our way in 2014.

We heard last month that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are reprising their roles from the original films for the reboot’s sequel, and that Hugh Jackman was in talks to return alongside them as Logan / Wolverine.

And now it’s official. Tweeted by the director himself, Bryan Singer, Hugh Jackman will be back for more:

“I would officially like to welcome @RealHughJackman to the cast of #Xmen Days of Future Past. Very excited! More to come…”

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult are all reprising their roles from X-Men: First Class, and with the original cast joining them, we can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

The official synopsis is being kept under wraps, but the source material suggests we have something somewhat brilliant to look forward to:

“Days of Future Past is a classic storyline that unfolded in two issues of Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men in 1981, from writer Chris Claremont and artists John Byrne and Terry Austin. The story was partially set in an alternate future where surviving mutants have been penned in concentration camps, giant robots called Sentinels patrol America, and most of the X-Men have been hunted and killed. In the present day, the X-Men were forced to stop a key event from unfolding in order to keep that future from occurring.”

Singer is returning to the helm once more in Matthew Vaughn’s place, having directed the first and second films in the original series. He’ll be directing from a script penned by Vaughn, Jane Goldman, and Simon Kinberg, and smart money says that with so many talented filmmakers on board, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Jackman will be back on the big screen in the same role before then, taking the lead in next summer’s blockbuster, The Wolverine. And naturally, that’s definitely one to look forward to.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for a release on 18th July, 2014, making it one of the biggest and most prominently-positioned blockbusters of that year. And with Singer saying that we have more to come, here’s to hoping that it will be coming shortly.
