Joaquin-Phoenix-in-HerWith Spike Jonze’s latest feature, Her, opening wide in the US this Friday, Warner Bros. has released a new TV spot in anticipation of the occasion.

The romantic comedy-drama has been picking up awards recognition throughout the awards season, and will be hoping to walk away from the end of the weekend not only with a healthy box office taking, but also at least one trophy from its three nominations at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Leading man Joaquin Phoenix is up for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, Jonze is up for Best Screenplay, and the film itself is in the running for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, “her” follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.

Scarlett Johansson lends her voice as Phoenix’s on-screen computer, Samantha, with Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, and Chris Pratt completing the cast very nicely.

Jonze directs from his own script, with Megan Ellison (Zero Dark Thirty, True Grit) producing alongside Jonze’s past collaborator, Vincent Landay (Adaptation., Being John Malkovich).

Her is now playing in select US cinemas, and will be opening wide stateside this Friday, January 10th. We’ve got a little longer to wait for its arrival here, with its UK release date set for 14th February, but it definitely looks like it’s going to be worth the wait. Here’s the latest TV spot to get you in the mood.
