The critical reception for Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire”, which sees MMA star Gina Carano make her debut acting performance as Mallory, has been generally very positive, with no less esteemed a critic than Dr Mark Kermode declaring it his movie of the week on its release. Carano has been much-lauded as well, managing to convince in the acting scenes as well as when kicking Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum in their pretty heads.
It is good to hear therefore that Carano seems to have landed herself a follow-up role, this time in “In The Blood”, an action thriller to be helmed by John Stockwell, who has previously given us Crazy/Beautiful and Into the Blue. In The Blood will see Carano playing a grieving widow, whose husband is kidnapped and killed while they are on a cruise and who goes off in search of those she believes to be responsible. Stockwell told THR that:-
“This role will showcase not only Gina’s fighting skills, but also her acting abilities as her character struggles to reign in her violent past”
That past is presumably where the “In the Blood” thing comes from, with Carano doubtless turning out to be a former badass special forces operative or some such who proves to be rather adroit at finding and hurting bad people.
Shooting kicks off in late Spring in Puerto Rico, working from a script by Bennett Yellin (Dumb & Dumber) and James Robert Johnston. Hopefully Carano will find the success her undoubted talent deserves.
