As the first original film in Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy. Especially when you remember that it will come immediately before The Avengers 2 in the line-up.
We heard earlier in the month that the studio are looking to shoot the film in England this summer. And that means that we should have some very firm casting news to look forward to soon.
So far, it’s pretty much all been shortlists for the human lead, Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord) – rumours or otherwise – including the likes of Jim Sturgess, Eddie Redmayne, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Now Latino Review are adding a few more names to the list in the form of Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell, and Cam Cigandet.
And not only that, but they’ve heard that Marvel are asking for the availability of both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler.
As of yet, the proposed roles for Carrey and Sandler aren’t known. But bringing on two of the biggest names in comedy would certainly attract plenty of viewers to the already-anticipated film.
I could really see Jim Carrey taking on the voice of Groot, and maybe Adam Sandler that of Rocket Raccoon. And whilst we have to keep this one as a rumour for now, with the studio yet to confirm or deny either way, it’s definitely an intriguing possibility to consider. The Avengers was nothing short of hilarious, with a perfect mix of action, comedy, drama, and sci-fi. And it looks like Gunn and the studio are wanting to bring to the fore the comedic elements for Guardians of the Galaxy as well.
As for the leading human role, my preference continues to be torn. I would have loved to see Gordon-Levitt take the lead on this, and have been gunning for Sturgess to win the role since his name was announced.
But I’m also a very big fan of both Bentley and Cigandet, and would love to see any of them get a shot at joining a franchise like Guardians of the Galaxy. Franchises as big as Marvel brings to the table don’t get any bigger.
James Gunn (Super) is of course going to be at the helm for this, directing from a script by Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy, with Gunn also thought to have had a hand in writing after coming on board.
Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on 1st August, 2014, and is all but guaranteed to be one of the biggest and best films of next year. I can’t wait. With the summer fast approaching, here’s to hoping that casting news will be concrete very soon. More as we get it.
