Scoot-McNairy-in-MonstersGareth Edwards’ Godzilla is without a doubt one of the films we’re really looking forward to in 2014. Production is expected to begin in March this year, and there are still a handful of things we’re eagerly awaiting to hear.

We saw an awesome first teaser poster last summer, which Legendary and Warner Bros. debuted at Comic-Con alongside a teaser trailer, which was reportedly received in Hall H with a jaw-dropping, mind-blown reaction.

We then heard back in October that Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce had been hired to polish the script, originally penned by Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). It was noted at the time that it wasn’t an issue with the script itself, but more that the studio were looking to up the ages of the cast they were considering, and wanted the script polished accordingly.

Now Deadline report that the brilliant Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead) has come on board to do a final rewrite of the script, and that the producers involved with the project are somewhat up in the air at the moment, with Dan Lin and Roy Lee reportedly battling producer and financier, Legendary Pictures, and Mary Parent now close to coming on board as producer.

And on top of that, we’ve finally started the round of casting possibilities, with Variety’s Justin Kroll reporting that Scoot McNairy (Monsters, Argo), Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Immortals), and Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class, Antiviral) are being considered for the lead, which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is thought to have passed on.

For my money, I would love nothing more than to see McNairy reunite with his Monsters writer-director. McNairy has been very much deservedly on the rise in the last year or two, taking supporting roles in some of the biggest projects, particularly in the past few months in the midst of the awards season. He’s had supported roles alongside Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly, Ben Affleck in Argo, and Matt Damon in Promised Land. And he’ll be going to Sundance this month in Lynn Shelton’s Touchy Feely, alongside Rosemarie DeWitt and Ellen Page.

He has a slew of films in various stages of (post-)production, including Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years a Slave, with Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank, with Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, and Maggie Gyllenhaal; and Jaume Collet-Serra’s Non-Stop, with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore.

Adding Godzilla to that list would be nothing short of immense. He has a busy schedule, for certain, but if the studio want him, and if he can fit it in, it would be awesome.

Edwards and McNairy did such an incredible job on Monsters, and seeing them reunite for Godzilla would be something of a dream. Especially with the film’s franchise potential, and the concomitant potential to launch the lead’s career to even greater heights.

Godzilla is set to hit the big screen on 16th May, 2014, and with production expected to get underway in a matter of months, we should have some concrete casting news for you very soon. More as we get it.
