For and Against: The Amazing Spider-Man in The Avengers 2

StumbleUponRedditPinterestShare

The Amazing Spider-ManNext week, the eagerly anticipated franchise reboot The Amazing Spider-Man swings into UK cinemas, and with its impending release, its star Andrew Garfield – who of course plays the famous scarlet-clad hero – has been asked on numerous occasions about the possibility of Spider-Man joining the Avengers at a later date.

The answer has always been a tongue-in-cheek ‘Yes’ – honestly, who wouldn’t want to be on that team?! – but there is a lot of red tape to get through in order to get to that stage, what with Sony currently owning the rights to Spider-Man meaning that Marvel will have to buy the rights back before being able to use the character.

There is no doubting that the web-slinging hero is one of the most well-known comic book characters of all time, and his presence in a future Avengers movie is at the very least intriguing to ponder.

The question therefore is; would Spidey be a good fit for the Avengers?

For

•    Superhero Team-up!
The climactic battle at the end of Avengers Assemble is some of the best superhero action you’re ever likely to see, with plenty of great team-ups – Iron Man reflecting his repulsor blasts off of Captain America’s shield, for example – included for our viewing pleasure. Adding Spider-Man to that mix opens up more similarly thrilling possibilities, and would be undeniably awesome to watch.
Side note: If you’d like an idea of what a potential team-up might look like, pick up the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance video games.

•    A Wisecracking Spider-Man in the Avengers? Yes please…
With the possible exception of Iron Man, when it comes down to saving the world the Avengers get quite serious (not that there is anything wrong with that). One thing Spidey is well-known for are his wisecracking tendencies, often in the heat of battle. Spider-Man quipping away whilst taking down a villain alongside the Avengers would offer a light-hearted perspective on the action beats, and could also serve as excellent basis for other Avengers to banter.

    •    Interplay With Other Avengers
Half the fun in Avengers Assemble came when the team members butted heads with one another before coming together as a cohesive team, and it would be exciting to see how Spider-Man fits in to that fabric. Additionally, in The Amazing Spider-Man we get to see more of Peter Parker’s considerable intellect (he constructs his own web-shooters this time round, just as he does in the comics) and so it could be interesting to watch Parker trying to solve a scientific problem with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, for example.

Against

    •    Do we really NEED Spider-Man in the Avengers?
As Tony Stark so calmly recited to Loki during Avengers Assemble, the current Avengers roster is pretty formidable. Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America & co saved the planet pretty efficiently last time out, and each Avenger had a crucial part to play.  As great as it would be to see Spider-Man in the Avengers, it would be even better if there was a logical reason behind him joining the team. Otherwise, it begs the question; what can Spider-Man do that other Avengers can’t do better?

    •    Too many characters?
One of my biggest fears prior to Avengers Assemble was that there would be too many superheroes to service in one film, and that some characters would get short-changed. Thankfully, writer/director Joss Whedon did a magnificent job on both fronts, and I needn’t have worried. With that said, is the inclusion of Spider-Man one hero too many? His presence would demand a sizeable amount of screen time, screen time that will inevitably cut into other characters’ moments. Which brings me nicely to my final point…

    •    Much of Spider-Man’s character traits are already present in other Avengers
A lot of what good ol’ Spidey would bring to the team is already covered with other Avengers’ personas. For instance, would you rather here a joke from Iron Man or Spider-Man? Would you rather watch Bruce Banner or Peter Parker make a clever scientific deduction? Both of these facets have already been done brilliantly in Avengers Assemble. Spider-Man would simply act as another conduit for specific interchanges, as opposed to being a necessary addition to the team.

Conclusion

A compelling argument wouldn’t you say? At the end of the day, it’s more than likely that the Avengers will be just fine without Spider-Man, but personally I would love to see the wall-crawler make an appearance in future Avengers films, even if it’s only a cameo.

I really would like to see Spiderman enjoy the Avengers,I love both and will be a dream come true to see Spiderman team up with the Avenger in a movie like he already did in the Comics.
But unfortunatelly I don’t think Sony will never give back to Marvel the rights to use Spiderman in a movie.

I think he should join up with the Avengers. Marvel has bank and could easily buy back the character. It will only please fans. As far as plot goes. He could easily be set aside and chill with Banner on a scientific project until the end of the movie. there are lots of ways they can fit him into the Avengers 2. Heck Marvel could share rights with Sony if they don’t want to spend that much dough on buying him back. Anyways I will be waiting until the very end of the end credits of the Amazing Spider-man praying that Nick Fury will ask him to join…

i’m all for but it just won’t happen. this spiderman film will make a killin at cinema, so disney/marvel won’t get rights back. same goes for Wolverine, Fantastic Four & X-MEN. Its a shame really. World War hulk would be awesome, plus the kree/skrull war. in my view they can’t be done without these characters. spiderman makes enough money in lunch box’s alone so theres not much hope. same goes for wolverine, Although the next wolverine is supposed to be an 18. They should do a Black Panther & Luke cage.

well..there’s ONE area that Spidey still can cover that the current Avengers roster could not. YOUTH. sure, both Cap and Thor are still young, strapping men, but, one is from a bygone era and the other one..even by-gone-r.

it’ll be interesting for a loner kid from NYC to interact with the big boys (and girl) and perhaps say and react to what most of the audience members WOULD say and react in his situation. sure, he’s an exceptionally bright and gifted kid, but, he’s from earth and he’s current and he pretty much represents an average joe..well, with a radio active spider powers and genius intellect.

however..i think if they are gonna do a crossover, they should introduce the idea in the next spidey flick (IF they don’t reboot it yet again). probably, showing the AFTERMATH of The Avengers’ alien invasion in the beginning of the movie and explaining HOW COME spidey didn’t join his future teammates in the fight…cuz it happened RIGHT IN HIS BACKYARD, literally.

Looking at the comments here a lot of people think it would work. I don’t think so because Spiderman is still a “secret identity” character whereas everyone knows who the people in The Avengers are. As neat as it would be seeing Peter Parker working with Banner on science stuff (maybe in a Hulk movie to give it more oomph) I just don’t think it would work too well. But then again if Joss Whedon was given the opportunity, well, it would work.

As per the character rights, it’d be nice if they could team up say a certain % of money earned would go to Sony for Spiderman’s part. However at this point I don’t think either side would go for a joint venture. It’s all greed.

I would love too see Spidey in the Avengers too, but as you said, the main problem might be that there are to many characters + Sony still own the rights of spider-man.
but I could think of a Storyline where it could be possible
first IronMan/Tony Stark could appear in a futer TASM Movie – don’t forget their both scientists and could create new stuff like in the comics (Iron Spider or sth)
second (maybe not in the avengers 2 but if ther is a third movie) the civil war or skrull invasion – if marvel does the next avengers movie with thanos and his little boyband what else they could bring next? ^^ + they want to make so many movies like ant man, so it “could” be possible ;)
third I could also imagine a storyline, where spidey wants to join the team, but some of them are against it, because he wouldn’t even reveal his identidy in front of them (also in the comics at the beginning)
but I guess if that will happen any time, we have to wait years until that day and could just pray for it (or pray against it, if you’re not a fan of the idea “amazing Spider-Man and Avengers” – the comics are great though)

  • Marvel NERD

i am all for it!! i want spiderman to join. i have already put my vote on some other website and it was about a page long. so ima keep it short. spiderman must join…he helped take down thanos..please sony and disney need to work this out and let him in the movie!!!

Two things come to mind about Parker being part of the New Avengers movies.
1: The policity stunts. Adrew Garfield carring around Avengers comics featuring Thano’s and supposively the Oscorp tower suppose to be in the Avengers as an Easter egg.
2: Some Obvious Hints about him being there. The first hint is The IronPatriot Armor that is suppose to appear in IronMan3. If you don’t know who IronPatriot is, he’s none other then Spiderman’s own Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin! Yeah! Thst’ right. The second part. That info that Dr.Conner’s didn’t tell Peter about his parents, well, would you believe that his parents were of S.H.I.E.L.D.? That’s right! So, Sony better play nice. It would only make sense.
