It’s not often we get to see a surfing movie on the big screen, so when the opportunity does arrive, I’m all for it. Especially when that surfing movie has Gerard Butler as one of the leads.
Chasing Mavericks sees Butler star opposite newcomer Jonny Weston, telling the true story of Jay Moriarty (Weston) and his path to becoming the legendary surfer he was until his early death in 2001 at the age of just 22, with Butler playing his mentor.
The first trailer and poster have now made their way online, giving a great first tease of the impressive footage we can look forward to. It feels a little like a live-action version of Surf’s Up in places, but I love Surf’s Up, so that’s a good thing in my books.
“CHASING MAVERICKS is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15-year-old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.”
Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) is behind the camera, directing from a script co-written by Brandon Hooper and Kario Salem, with Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer co-starring.
Chasing Mavericks, previously titled Of Men and Mavericks, will be released in the US on 26th October, before heading to our shores (no pun intended) in the UK on 2nd November. The trailer shows off some pretty awesome footage, so I’m looking forward to its release on the big screen. As usual with this first poster, you can click to enlarge.
