Before the highly anticipated new season of Arrested Development gets underway in the New Year, we’ve got another brilliant comedy to look forward to from Jason Bateman in Identity Thief.

We saw the first character posters of Bateman and co-star Melissa McCarthy this afternoon, and now the first trailer has made its way online.

“Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (McCarthy) to live it up on the outskirts of Miami, where the queen of retail buys whatever strikes her fancy. There’s only one glitch: The ID she’s using to finance these sprees reads “Sandy Bigelow Patterson” … and it belongs to an accounts rep (Bateman) who lives halfway across the U.S.

With only one week to hunt down the con artist before his world implodes, the real Sandy Bigelow Patterson heads south to confront the woman with an all-access pass to his life. And as he attempts to bribe, coax and wrangle her the 2,000 miles to Denver, one easy target will discover just how tough it is to get your name back.”

The film was originally to be led by two male actors, but Bateman liked McCarthy so much after seeing her in Bridesmaids that he pushed to have the script rewritten, which naturally must be quite humbling, and definitely promising for us.

Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is reuniting with Bateman once more behind the camera, directing from a script by Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II).

Starring alongside Bateman and McCarthy will be a great supporting cast, headed up by Jon Favreau, Amanda Peet, Eric Stonestreet, John Cho, TI, and Genesis Rodriguez.

Identity Thief will be hitting US theatres on 8th February, 2013, and will then head across the Atlantic for a 1st March, 2013 release here in the UK. I can’t wait. This should be another brilliant partnering from Gordon and Bateman. For now, here’s the first trailer. Enjoy.
