Only God Forgives Promo PosterNicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, his follow-up to 2011’s Drive, is naturally one of the most anticipated films of next year.

Reteaming with the brilliant Ryan Gosling, we got our first official look at Gosling in the lead back in the spring, and most recently saw some great set photos of the leading actor looking bloody and bruised, and now the first promo poster has debuted online, with a similarly battered and bruised Gosling front and centre.

“Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.

When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.

Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.

Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.”

Winding Refn is directing from his own script, with Gosling starring alongside Kristin Scott Thomas, Yayaying, and Vithaya Pansringarm.

The poster looks to have come out of the American Film Market, where a clip was reported to have been previewed. Craig got a preview of the film back at Cannes – you can read his preview report here – and naturally he really liked what he saw.

Still no word yet on when exactly we can look forward to it next year, but we’re keeping our fingers tightly crossed for a Spring 2013 release, and quite possibly a debut at Cannes, which played host to Drive’s debut last year, and earned Winding Refn the Best Director honour at the festival. For now, here’s the great first promo poster, and with any luck, we’ll have more on this soon.
