While there’s no amount of goodwill that will induce many people to think favourably on this prequel/sequel to Scorsese’s 1980 film, the first pictures from Martin Guigui’s Raging Bull 2 have emerged.
If it makes it easier then Guigui’s film can be seen a companion piece to the Oscar-winning original as it tells the story before and after the events in Jake LaMotta’s life depicted in Scorsese’s film. William Forsythe and Mojean Aria play the man in the two times of his life with Penelope Ann Miller and Joe Mantegna signed up to star alongside.
Nothing much to glean from these pics, they’ll be fighting and cardplaying aplenty and there is a lot of story to tell of LaMotta’s life not contained in Raging Bull however you have to ask if, in telling the story thirty-two years ago, Scorsese hasn’t already picked out the best bits for himself.
