We knew to expect brilliance from Joe Wright’s upcoming adaptation of Anna Karenina, and when the beautiful first trailer hit last month, we weren’t disappointed.
Keira Knightley takes the lead as the eponymous Anna Karenina, and continuing the wonderful things we’ve seen from the film already, we’ve now got the first clip from the film, introduced by the director himself.
“The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with director Joe Wright, following the award-winning box office successes “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement,” is the epic love story “Anna Karenina,” adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (“Shakespeare in Love”). The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.”
Starring alongside Knightley will be a fantastic cast, headed up by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, Domhnall Gleeson, Holliday Grainger, and Olivia Williams.
Tom Stoppard, the Oscar-winning writer behind Shakespeare in Love, has penned the script, adapting Leo Tolstoy’s original 19th Century novel.
Anna Karenina will be released in the UK on 7th September, before heading across the Atlantic for a 9th November release in the US. Focus Features will almost certainly be giving the film a strong awards campaign later this year, and all we’ve seen so far suggests it will be heading straight for the Oscars come spring.
