Breaking records in the US in its opening weekend two weeks ago, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master opened in a wider number of theatres last weekend, and has been continuing to do well at the box office, with universal praise from critics – you can read our review from TIFF here – making it a strong contender in the coming awards season.
As a thank you for watching, a final trailer has been released for US audiences, teasing more new footage as we head into its second weekend on wide release.
“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the one time vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.”
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Amy Adams lead a fine cast, and starring alongside them are Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky, with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia) composing the score.
The Master is currently playing in US theatres, and will be opening here in the UK on 2nd November, a week earlier than previously expected, which can only be good news. For now, here’s the final trailer from the States. If you haven’t seen it yet, this is definitely one to watch, and will be a solid choice with all the buzz it’s garnered coming out of Venice and TIFF strong as we head towards the Oscars. Enjoy.
