Ron Howard’s Rush has long been one of our most anticipated films of the year. The film, a Formula 1 biographical drama centred on the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, will be released in theatres this September, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a strong contender come Oscar season.

Viewers of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend have been treated to a new trailer for Howard’s upcoming sporting drama, and now the great new trailer has debuted online.

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl take the leading roles as James Hunt and Niki Lauda, respectively. And starring alongside them is a fine cast, led by Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Natalie Dormer.

Howard is reuniting once more with the great Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon), who penned the script, and this should definitely be considered a must-see film of the year.

Rush will be released in the UK on 13th September, with its US release date following a week later on September 20th. I can’t wait. Here’s the new trailer to show you why.

In the interview, James asks Todd about what it was about the story that they wanted to bring to the screen and how it would move on from the previous two films. This film is much more of a heist movie and James asks more about that, how Alan (Zach Galifianakis’ character) integrates in and what he’s ultimately looking for.

James also asks about new cast-members John Goodman and Melissa McCarthy, how they fit into the story and also into the ensemble cast as a whole. Finally we get to hear from Todd about his films sitting within a group of films made famous by the city of Las Vegas and more specifically returning to the city that was a character in the first film and his choice of music used in the trilogy.

We’ll have our own interviews with Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha coming up tomorrow so make sure you come back for those. The Hangover 3 is released in UK cinemas today.

We recently heard that the film is set to revolve around some new research being done by particle physicists at Columbia University. Whilst speaking to Digital Spy, along with discussing his involvement in the vodka business, Aykroyd has further teased a few more plot details, and discusses his wish to have sections of the film in 3D.

In terms of the overall direction of the project, he encourages us to “think Star Trek,” another franchise so impressively rebooted in recent years by the ever-brilliant J.J. Abrams.

“We’re going to concentrate on the new,” he said. “I can’t drive that Cadillac, my character Ray Stantz: one eye is out, I’ve got a hip that’s gone, a knee, I can’t lift the Proton pack anymore. We need new blood to take over… we need four to five to six new Ghostbusters.”

And speaking about wanting to make some of the film in 3D,

“I don’t think it’ll be exclusively 3D because it can work without it. When you’ve got all the stream and the hardware we’re building, wow!

“With regards to 3D – the new stuff will totally lend itself to 3D. Picture slime coming out and splashing people in the audience. That’s where we’re heading and it’s going to be very visual and exciting in all its forms.”

It sounds like the script is still in the development stages, with Aykroyd not settling on a number in the interview below for how many new recruits will be joining the team. So if you were expecting shooting to get underway soon, I think we might still be a little way away from that. But the project is clearly still alive and well, and given how far graphics and special effects have come since Ghostbusters II back in 1989, you can’t help but think that Ghostbusters 3(D) is bound to be very visually impressive.

With the film already in cinemas on our shores, a great new 60-second UK TV spot has been released, teasing some of the brilliant action you can expect from what promises to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.
Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return to take the lead for the sixth instalment. And they’re joined by another awesome cast, led by Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne Johnson, Luke Evans, Joe Taslim, Tyrese Gibson, Gina Carano, Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky, and the brilliant Sung Kang.

Lin is behind the camera once more, directing from a script penned by Chris Morgan, who’s written all the films Lin’s directed in the series.

The studio have already announced that Fast and Furious 7 will be hitting the multiplex next summer, so be sure to stay through the credits!

Fast and Furious 6 is now playing in UK cinemas, and will be released in the US tomorrow, May 24th.

Hirokazu Koreeda’s latest in a run of tender explorations of family dynamics rests on a rather unusual high concept, the idea of two children being swapped at birth in a hospital and the error not being discovered until much later. The two children, six year-old boys named Keita and Ryusei, have had very different experiences in their formative years and it is not surprising that Like Father, Like Son touches on the oft returned to theme of nature vs. nurture, but that is not the main concern of this sublime and tender human drama.

Opening with an interview sequence in which Keita is vetted for entrance into a highly exclusive school, we hear Keita relate a rather sweet story of his father, Ryota Nonomiya (Masaharu Fukushima) taking him camping and kite flying. As Keita, Ryota and Midori (Machiko Ono), Keita’s mother and Ryota’s wife, leave the school having seemingly impressed the school judges it is revealed that the story is a lie, something that Keita was told to say when he was prepped for the interview.

Ryota is not the kind of father who takes his son camping. A highly driven architect Ryota has little time for his son and what time he does have is spent pushing him, preparing him for a future career. It’s obvious that he cares for his son but clearly thinks that his role is to ensure that his son is a success. Keita does not quite appear to be his father’s son though – Keita’s is more than happy to not win at everything he sets his mind to and takes pleasure in other’s achievements – and when Ryota finds out that he actually isn’t his son he seems to see another chance.

The other family, who have been bringing up the Nonomiya’s son thinking it was theirs, are very, very different. The father, Yudai (Franky Lily), is a bit of a slob and seems to care little about career aspirations, but he spends a lot of time with his family and puts an emphasis on having fun and shared experiences. As the two families begin to intermingle, they decide to exchange the boys for weekends on a trial basis, each family gets a chance to see a different way of living. Most significantly, in the context of the film, each boy and father gets to experience an alternate relationship.

The Japanese title of Like Father, Like Son is reportedly something closer to ‘Then One Becomes a Father’ and it is clear from that and what we see in the film’s final scenes that Koreeda leans more towards Yudai’s approach than Ryota’s and the open-ended but also somewhat resolved final sequence involving both families is a hopeful and heartbreaking glimpse into a happier future.

Koreeda continues to excel with Like Father, Like Son in developing a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging film out of delicate observational drama. With unfussy cinematography and an effective use of flowing classical compositions Koreeda has crafted a sublime humanist drama. A masterwork of beautiful simplicity.

Nicolas Winding Refn gained something of a cult following after Drive, his previous team up with Ryan Gosling, and the film even gained the Danish filmmaker a number of fans who would most likely usually favour more mainstream fare. His and Gosling’s follow-up, Only God Forgives, has just premiered at Cannes, playing in Competition, but it seems unlikely that this collaboration will result in the same adoration that Drive has been treated to, or crossover success. Far more stylised, violent and obtuse than Drive, Only God Forgives is a return to some of the more abstract work found in Refn’s filmography, such as Valhalla Rising or Fear X.

This would be no bad thing if there was something to be found within the abstraction beyond some handsome production design and reasonably pleasing lighting, but Only God Forgives may just be the dumbest film Refn has ever made. Allowing the viewer plenty of time to consider the meaning of what one is seeing – there are a large number of almost static shots of characters looking pensively into middle distance – Refn fails to provide anything meaningful to hold onto. Even grasping, reaching for subtext one comes up lacking anything tangible. There’s the suggestion that we are supposed to think the film has something to do with retribution and revenge, the title certainly signposts this, but there is no meat to this idea in the film at all.

Even if one accepts that the film is not actually about anything, Refn almost certainly seemed to think it was though, then what are we left with? Beyond some handsome visuals, although a few of the framing choices are startling bad, and a very effective doom-laden score from the highly talented Cliff Martinez, very little else.

The most entertaining aspect of the film is certainly Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays Julian’s (Gosling) mother Crystal, a tyrannical and foul-mouthed bundle of toxic rage. She arrives in Bangkok, the setting of the film, after hearing about the death of her other son, Billy (Tom Burke), who was killed after he raped and murdered a 16 year-old girl. Her response to this piece of information? “I’m sure he had his reasons”. A pretty sickening line but one delivered with such a deadpan approach from Kristin Scott Thomas that it plays as a nice piece of jet black comedy. She also steals later scenes too, such as a dinner scene with Julian and a prostitute he is pretending is his girlfriend. Stealing the scene from Gosling, whose somnambulistic performance is clearly a deliberate choice but a dreadful one, and another character whose ‘narrative function’ appears to be listening and looking pretty, is not exactly a great achievement though.

As the skeletal plot makes its way to its inevitable and bleak climax/anticlimax we begin to see quite how toxic an influence Crystal is on Julian, and presumably his brother before him. The pair of brothers have been running a Muay Thai Boxing club in Bangkok as a cover to sell drugs but it is clear that Ma Crystal is at the head of their operation and a minor revelation in the last third suggests that their reasons for leaving America were related to something even darker.

All this swimming in a cesspool of violence and debauchery could at least hold some visceral pleasures but Only God Forgives is actually a pretty drudging affair and even at just ninety minutes it really drags. Who knew that a dark and twisted fantasy could be quite so dull.

The film promises to be a zombie movie quite unlike any we’ve seen before, going for the huge scope that’s relatively unknown to the typically lower-budgeted genre.

I’ve been hugely impressed by all that we’ve seen from the film so far, and its June release date can’t come fast enough in my books. And with that date fast approaching, Paramount have released two action-packed new TV spots, giving us another great look at some of the explosive sequences in the movie.

United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Pitt is joined by an awesome cast, led by Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Lucy Aharish, Matthew Fox, Bryan Cranston, Abigail Hargrove, Sterling Jerins, and David Morse.

Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) is behind the camera, directing from a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom), loosely based on the original novel by Max Brooks, with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) brought in to do re-writes for the re-shoots.

World War Z will be hitting regular and IMAX theatres on June 21st in the US and UK. Its release comes a week after Zack Snyder’s immensely anticipated Man of Steel, making June 2013 another epic month to follow on from the mammoth blockbusters of May.

The featurette features one of the main cast members Josh Brolin talking about his character John O’Mara.

He talks about how he’s an old fashioned cop with honour and the need to protect his city from all that is evil. If you’re a fan of an old fashioned gangster movie then this one is for you! Check out the clip below the synopsis for the DVD release which you can pre-order here. The movie also stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Sean Penn.

os Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and, if he has his way, every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop–except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

Ah, the biopic. It’s one of the most revered and resilient genres of cinema past and present. The formula is simple: make a movie about a well-known public figure, preferably one with a checkered past, form your narrative around the tone of their upbringing (usually a dramatic one) and sell the film as a “revealing portrait of a man/woman we all know and love”. You’ll be blessed with awards and showered with praise.

However there is one very hard part: casting. When you’re dealing with an especially prolific subject, this is the part that can make or break your movie. Some have gotten this wrong, and some have gotten this very right – Michael Douglas’s turn as Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra is winning his best reviews in years.

Let’s take a look at some of the best biopic casting choices in film history.

10. Robert De Niro as Al Capone in The Untouchables (1987)

It helps to start this list off with a performance of such grandiosity that the others seem more tame by comparison.

Already a legend by the time the film was made, Robert De Niro transformed himself into the notorious Chicago crime boss with a panache that only he could provide. The balancing act of making Capone seem charming, vain, psychotic and despicable simultaneously could not have been done as gracefully with another actor, especially opposite a cast that included a tour-de-force from the great Sean Connery.

Though, De Niro stepped to the plate with an evenly matched composite of a man as celebrated as he is reviled.

The film is one we’ve been looking forward to for some time, and now Warner Bros. have released the first trailer, setting the tone nicely ahead of its August release date.

David Burke is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad. In order to wipe the slate clean – and maintain a clean bill of health – David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose and wannabe customer Kenny, and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey, he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Aniston and Sudeikis star alongside a terrific cast, led by Emma Roberts and Will Poulter as the fake children of their fake family, along with Ed Helms, Kathryn Hahn, Nick Offerman, and Thomas Lennon.

Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) returns behind the camera for his third feature, directing from a script first penned by Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (Wedding Crashers), with Sean Anders and John Morris (Sex Drive) also lending their hand to the script during the project’s long time in development at New Line.

Horrible Bosses is, hands down, one of my favourite comedies of all time, and Sudeikis and Aniston are of course a big part of that. So seeing them reunite for We’re The Millers, sharing a lot more screen time, is definitely good news in my books, and you just know this is going to be another great one.

We’re The Millers is set to be released in the US on August 9th, with its UK release date following two weeks later on 23rd August. I can’t wait.

Please note, this is a red band trailer

Following the recent Pacific Rim trailer we saw, Universal have partnered up with the campaign and launched a new trailer for the animated comedy, Despicable Me 2.

Steve Carell is of course back once more for the sequel, lending his voice as the not-so-villainous Gru. And I can’t wait to see him alongside his adorable little girls this summer.

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s worldwide blockbuster Despicable Me entertained audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. In summer 2013, get ready for more Minion madness in Despicable Me 2.

Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy adventure featuring the return of (former?) super-villain Gru (Steve Carell), his adorable girls, the unpredictably hilarious Minions…and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.

Carell is joined by another great voice cast, led by Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher, Moisés Arias, Steve Coogan, and Ken Jeong.

Co-directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud are back behind the camera, directing from a script co-written by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul.

Despicable Me 2 will be hitting in 3D on 28th June here in the UK, with its US release date set for the following week on July 3rd. This is going to be a lot of fun. Here’s the new Moments Worth Paying For trailer to get you back in the spirit, and to give a little reminder (as if you needed any) that cinema would be nowhere without its paying audiences like us.

The film premiered at Sundance (under the original name Don Jon’s Addiction) to very promising early reviews, and was understandably a hot property coming out of the festival. Relativity quickly acquired the film with a big PR commitment, and now the brilliant first trailer has landed online.

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt is joined by a terrific cast, led by Scarlett Johansson as the female lead, alongside Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Brie Larson, and Rob Brown.

Gordon-Levitt is directing from his own script, with past collaborator Ram Bergman (Brick, Looper) producing.

Smart money says that it’s going to be a big contender at the likes of the Independent Spirit Awards for all concerned.

Don Jon is set to be released in the US on October 18th, and has its UK release date set for 15th November. This is definitely a must-see movie of the year, and I can’t wait for it to hit.

Previously titled Toy’s House, The Kings of Summer premiered at Sundance at the start of the year, and earned brilliant reviews as a wonderful coming-of-age comedy, powered by terrific performances from its young leading cast.

The film crossed the Atlantic for Sundance London last month (where I saw and loved it), and you can read our review here. Having spent the past few months on the festival circuit, it’s about to be released in the US next weekend, and Funny or Die have debuted a very red-band new trailer for the film.

Premiering to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, THE KINGS OF SUMMER is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends — Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio (Moises Arias) – who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. Free from their parents’ rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family – whether it is the one you’re born into or the one you create — is something you can’t run away from.

Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and Moises Arias are absolutely terrific as the young leading trio, with Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Megan Mullaly, Erin Moriarty, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Marc Evan Jackson all brilliantly completing the cast.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs from a script by Chris Galletta, with the two making their feature debuts with the film.

Alongside the terrific leading young kids, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie are absolutely as Joe’s father and sister, and you get a great little snippet of that in the trailer below in the Monopoly scene. Megan Mullaly and Marc Evan Jackson are equally hilarious as Patrick’s parents, and you can’t help but love their reaction to their son’s reasonably inoffensive response to his mother’s observation. Just excellent.

The Kings of Summer will be heading into US theatres next Friday, May 31st. Still no word yet on a UK release date, but I’m hoping it will be reaching our shores a little later in the year, even if it’s not in time for summer.

Everything that we’ve seen from the film so far has been ever so slightly mind-blowing, and its July release date really can’t come fast enough.

Following the epic new trailer and the awesome new TV spot we’ve seen recently comes a great new featurette, introduced by del Toro himself, going into some interesting detail on some of the original creations in the movie.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman lead a terrific cast.

Del Toro is back behind the camera for the first time since Hellboy II, and he’s directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans).

Pacific Rim will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12th in the US and UK, and that’s definitely a release date you’ll want to commit to memory if you haven’t already. Here’s the great new featurette to set up the premise of what’s known as ‘The Drift’.
